TLDR: how to order (see below). Tempura is sold by the piece. Fast food. Stools are square/cube shaped. One thing you'll notice is the viewing area for what's going on behind the counter while you wait--they post a sign that asks patrons to not take pictures. It kind of makes you wonder why. Service: order along a line and pay at the end. Seat yourself. Bus your own table. Water yourself. There is a drink fountain if you purchase a drink. Table cleanliness seems to be kept up well. How to order: 1. Grab a tray and a plate 2. Order one of the udon types listed above the tray area 3. Server will ask if you want: green onions, ginger, or seaweed ($0.29 extra) toppings. Additional toppings listed and are an extra charge. 4. Slide along the tempera bar and pick what you'd like (it's charged by the piece). I like this a lot since I'm picky. Complimentary tempera flakes! 5: Pay at the end. Tempura sauce is in a dispenser next to the register. Tonkatsu sauce will be handed to you in a small cup if you get items that go with it (ex. Potato croquette). Utensils will be handed to you. Tables have napkin dispensers. Below are items I have tried. Udon noodles: slightly tougher than most places. Not sure if it's because it's house made and supposed to be like that. Still tastes like udon. Nikki Udon: Soup is good. Beef is cut very thin and I wish there was more of it. They might as well call it onion udon. Adding ginger as a topping didn't do much to the flavor. Tempura Bar Items Kombucha: morning favorite! Tofu: it's ok. Not the best I've had. Very watery in the middle. Potato Croquette: average but still tastes good. Sweet Potato: average sweet potato. I think next time I'll grab more kombucha!

Over the years, between the cap hill location and this one, I've eaten at U:Don 112 times (yes I've ordered delivery/pickup a lot, that's why I know the number). It was my favorite restaurant until recently. It's cheap, it's delicious, and it's pretty quick. For the last 5 years or so the U district location has consistently forgotten parts of my order and does not pick up the phone, making it hard to order pickup consistently or rectify any issues with my order. While this caused me to avoid this location in favor of cap hill, I occasionally still ordered from here when I had to. Enter 2021: Recently, U:Don has started turning off delivery at peak hours. While this is a huge bummer for me, and the inconsistency makes it impossible to count on them, I understand that restaurants have trouble keeping up with the surge in demand and need to turn off access from the apps. However, three times now in the past 3 months this location has cancelled my order after accepting it, meaning I wait 45-60 minutes for my order to finish being prepared, watch 2- 3 driver's get turned away, only to have the restaurant cancel my order. This sucks for me and for the multiple drivers who drive all the way to the restaurant and don't get paid for their time. Whoever you hired recently to manage this location needs a second look.

I've passed by this place several times, but only recently had the hankering to actually try it out. I must say, I was very surprised in a pleasant way when I stepped in. The first thing that caught my eye were the prices; many of the noodle bowls were priced below 10 dollars, so for someone who's budget oriented and a massive noodle fan, the pricing is a godsend. Even after add-ons, my bill has yet to go above 20 dollars. The self-service style down to binning your own dishes is not for everyone, but as someone who's used to dealing with their own food and utensils, it's a minor gripe. The actual food, while somewhat limited, was delicious; thick and fluffy noodles, savory broth, tempura that's the right amount of fishy. (However, it is recommended for those who might be allergic to/can't stand onions to avoid the sukiyaki beef.) I had a blast at this place the last two times I came by and I certainly intend to go again.

I really love udon and there's plenty of stores of hot soup udon as well as chilled dipping udon, with the choice to add in all kinds of fixings. They also have a tempura bar so you can add different kinds of tempura on the side (price varies by type chosen). Pictured is a small sized kitsune udon and a few pieces of tempura. This place hand makes all their noodles fresh right out front so you can sometimes watch behind the glass as they press the dough while you wait. They even offer to-go take out and package the soup base sperate from the noodles to ensure that they will be there desired texture when you get around to eating them. They're always a great place to stop in if you're looking for a quick bite.

Came here with a buddy after mid-day workout. It was packed and lively, lots of UW students seem to like it here, and the table turnover was quick and efficient. The noods were just the right amount of chewy and I totally dig the number of options of bowls. I wasn't feelin the look of the curry or beef, so the seasonal option of Salmon Pesto Shiso was a clear winner. The row on the salmon was really tasty while the salmon was tasty but tiny in portion size. Highly recommend the tofu as an extra side. It's easy for those on a budget to keep things under $11 but be mindful that with all of the add-on options it's real easy to get rung up at $20 in no time. Overall a very nice job U:Don, thumbs up!

This place rules. Vibes and service are great, perfect setup -- greatly prefer the counter to other restaurants. Very good for eating in with a group or just grabbing a quick bite. For sides, the mentai mochi cheese harumaki super super good, while the tempura isn't always hot in my experience. For noodles, the salmon cream udon is decent, the spicy tantan udon is great. Very excited to try all the other stuff here. Overall probably my favorite udon place in town. :) Haven't been to the cap hill location yet -- even though that one's closer to me, I come here since the interior + energy at this one is better.

The noodles are made from scratch and require more than a day of proofing before they are cut and served right in front of the customers. The stock is made each morning and the tempura is made almost on-order as there is a very sizeable lunch rush. Honestly, knowing that the core component of the restaurant (udon noodles) being made from scratch is already an incredible thing. No central kitchen, no pre-made dough, etc. Please give it a try, they have a second location in Capitol Hill as well. The employees are worked hard and given a test that they need to pass in order to even be allowed to make the dough and/or cut the noodles. I won't divulge the details, but it's a hands-on test.

Great concept. Poor execution. Lots of room for improvement. 1. The strong smell of deep fryer immediately clings on to you and your clothes as soon as you walk in. 2. The noodles were over cooked. Soft and had zero chew. It had the texture of noodles that had been sitting in the fridge overnight in water. 3. The tempuras were room temperature cold. The tempura station was piled high with goodies but the focus was quantity over quality. A heat lamp would greatly improve this station if they continue to only fry in large batches. Overall, the experience was unpleasant and disappointing. A pack of instant udon from the store has higher quality standards and taste.

This place was much much better than I first thought! Prices are solid, and the food is also really really good for its price. There’s a small bar after you get your udon which you can add on such as spring rolls, gyoza, karagge, etc. though obviously not the freshest made/fried, the prices are still really good for it (45 cents per gyoza when I went in December 2022) The udon is also very solid, good selection as well. The portions are also good since there’s 3 sizes to choose from. Curry udon nice unique flavor and feel! Highly highly recommend to try at least once!

While the location isn't the most convenient with parking the food is well worth it. Recently they've updated and expanded the menu, the katsu curry is still my favorite. Perfectly balanced curry with onions, thin beef slices with crispy katsu pork on top. They have tons of amazing sides like musubi, chicken karage, takoyaki and fried Japanese eggplant! Noodles are handmade right in front of you and nothing is cooked until you order it.

Food is great but too expensive. Makes you put a minimum 20% tip on your total, bringing a meal for two beyond what the food is worth, after noodles, tempura and drinks. In Japan, there is no tip culture. Pay your employees a fair wage like Molly Moons (another Seattle based business) does, rather than forcing your customers to pay exorbitant prices. This is one reason why people don't eat out and why businesses struggle. I only took off one star for this, because employees were nice and helpful and the tempura was good though cold. Could have asked for them to make it fresh but didn't know that til after we ordered.

Slightly more expensive version of Marukame Udon - get a tray, order the udon and pick side orders from the tempura station, and pay at the cashier at the end of the line. Items we ordered: 1. Small ume niku oroshi hot udon (soup style) 2. Large Ontama cold udon 3. Karaage, sweet potato tempura and string beans tempura. The two udons were delicious!! Although my noodle was a bit softer than what I got at Marukame, I actually prefer this way :) Karaage was very dry, kinda like chicken jerky. String beans and sweet potato tempura were fine. The only complaint I had was about the tempura sauce — too much shoyu.

Let's be real, sometimes in life you want fancy schmancy - and sometimes you just want a decent cafeteria meal. This place dishes up familiar favorites for a reasonable (for Seattle) price, and I appreciate the speed. Absolutely delicious soup and the eggs are always perfectly soft boiled. Minus one star only for the environment - while it's not uncommon to bus your own table, I wish they would step up the game with cleaning the seating areas and floor. I've been here multiple times when it's just a shade too gnarly to bring a date. Par for the course for the Ave though.

I used to love this place (because the food is delicious ) but the service is absolute. Trash. Consistently (>5 times) we will submit an order for delivery, have it confirmed, and then randomly closed during peak hours and cancelling my delivery with no explanation. When I called the restaurant to ask why, they picked up the phone (presumably to stop the ringing ) but would not respond to my Hello? and simply ghosted me. Terrible management, but good food if you are willing to put up with it.

Quick, delicious, and cheap. A go to quick meal for me in the winter months because the broth warms you up quick. They also have most dishes served in a cold sauce, but I haven't tried those ones. My favorite is the Kitsune because the tofu is just BURSTING with flavor. I always get all the toppings and extra tofu. My significant other always gets the oroshi. One thing I will say is if you catch them at a time where the tempura veggies have been sitting out for awhile they can be kinda gross and soggy, so I usually avoid them unless I can tell they are fresh.

Ordering was chaotic, and the staff were difficult to hear and communicate with. They put on toppings that I did not ask for and then charged me extra. Someone handed me a box and told me to take my tempura. I was very confused and thought maybe my meal came with some?? So I awkwardly took a few. They then charged me extra. The food was fine after I spent 10 minutes picking out the toppings they charged me for that I did not want, but it definitely wasn't worth it.

Great concept with a huge variety of udon combinations. We ordered the tan tan noodles, curry udon, on Tama udon and marukame udon. My friends and I loved the broths. The tan tan and on Tama packed some serious heat. You get a rich broth with delicious toppings. The addition of the tempura skin and dipping it with every bite is a must try. The curry udon was very rich in flavor and delicious. Overall this is a great place to stop by for some quick noodles. Flavors are authentic and you have so many options to choose from.

The Niku Udon was good and savory from the sukiyaki beef and onions. The Ume Niku Orishi was on the sweeter side. This place is consistent and tastes and looks the same as it did nearly 10 years ago. The side options were good, the tempura is a hit or miss depending on how long it has been sitting out.

I ordered Udon and tempura sides to go with the soup. They didn’t have the style of udon they listed on their grub hub page. Instead of calling and offering any kind of equal or lesser value soup they just issued a delayed partial refund and sent me plain shrimp tempura. Luckily I ordered spam musubi for lunch tomorrow so I had a snack to keep me from yelling my true feelings of rage hunger at some college kid. I want a FULL refund! $23 is way to much for spam and cold breaded seafood. I feel robbed. Obviously.

Much like Marukame udon I had in Honolulu. Price here is a bit higher but it is fresh and tasty. Looks like a popular place for students. Place is clean. Customers need to bus the table after finishing eating. I had Niku udon today. The noodles were freshly made, the soup and beef was just the way I like. Love the seaweeds and green onions. I also had chicken karage, and veggie tempura, soooo yummy. I went in the restaurant hungry and came out with happy tummy. I will definitely visit again.

I love love this place. I always eat other foofd nearby and did not know why I did not recognize this place. You get to choose your udon hot or cold, bowl sizes and different soup bases. I picked the Niku Udon. The soup was flavorful the noodles was made from scratch, the beef was soft. There is a fried food bar for you to add some extra side dishes. There are squash, cucuber, yam, shrimp, etc all fried dipped in hot soy sauce. Each pieces was about $0.99 to $1. I was so impressed

The food was tasty, we had is on and rice bowls. The tempura was a bit stale, but good value. The downside was substantial though. While paying the cashier at least stepped away from the tempura to sneeze into her hand, she didn't waste hands afterward and I looked down to see clear liquid on her hand at the register. The same hand she used to take my credit card and hand us utensils. I pointed out that she needed to wash her hands but she really didn't seem to grasp the issue.

Food is delicious and service is friendly. Big portion and good quality ingredients. Price is on the budget friendly side. We tried three different soup base including the spicy tantan. All of them were delicious. The broth is rather simple but pairs well with the noodle made from scratch. The texture is surprisingly good. You can also order sides and toppings like deep fried pork loin, veggies and shrimps to go with the noodle. If you like udon, you will love this place.

I love eating here! Parking is a little tough to find but it's worth the extra driving around. When you get in, you will see the menu to the right and can choose from many options. The home made and you can pick and grab additional toppings as you move towards the cashier. I typically get the soup udon but will sometimes get the tan-tan udon. Be warned! The tan-tan is really spicy. Only downfall I would put on this place is the size of the cups for water. They are tiny!

Just moved to the neighborhood so I was really looking forward to checking out local Udon places. And I got very disappointed... Overpriced and very plain food (I'd not call it Udon). Exhausted and unfriendly employees. Ordering system is confusing and no one can really explain what is what and how much is that. I'd recommend to check out Pho l places just a block away from here. You'll pay a half of this price and will be happy about their service and food.

I had the tan tan udon soup here after deliberating on the dipping version (tsukemen) or soup. It's got a good amount of spice and flavour is not lacking. The tempura is reasonably priced and I'm reminded of marugame in Japan (chain udon and tempura shop) and I did not expect to find this in Seattle. Only thing missing is the grated daikon for the tempura sauce.

The udon is delicious without a doubt. The only problem I have is that I always get a large size because, frankly it's just one dollar to upgrade from small to large, and I can never finish it. We have tried Curry Udon, Goma Zaru Udon, Tan Tan Udon, and Ume Niku Oroshi. They all taste fantastic plus each of them has a very unique flavor. It is pretty fun to discover some new tastes each time we visit, and they rarely let us down.

I dined here in May of 2022, during the Street Festival. The prices were excellent, and the food was perfectly filling! There are a wide variety of options, and you are definitely able to customize your Udon based on your preferences -- they offer both cold and hot options, along with many sauces and add-ons (spring rolls, etc.). If you are looking for a great quick option in the U-District, I would highly recommend U:Don!

The tonkatsu curry udon dish is delicious. Their curry is made in beef stock and onions which makes a scrumptious sauce. Only concern was the cold tempura and gyoza. :/ Wasn’t my favorite, but the takoyaki has the perfect consistency to it. Everything is well-priced and well balanced. I’d return!

This place is great! 1) It's good value. Small is a perfectly reasonable portion size; medium is a lot [better be hungry!]; I've never gone bigger, but I can't imagine how much food something larger than medium must be. 2) It's fast. For food more-or-less compiled in front of you, it's a matter of 2-3 minutes, even when they're busy. 3) The people are working hard, but are friendly. (Give 'em a good tip!)

so happy they finally open closer to me in seattle. GREAT fresh udon that's thick and chewy. i love cold udon noodles with dipping sauce. their sauce is generous and so flavorful! its a very very casual place, where you get in line and pick what you what (like deli-counter style) and tempura items or addons. love the concept and the food is good at reasonable prices. wish there's one on the eastside now!

UPDATE: Noodle consistency has been perfect every time. Pls go here and enjoy amazing udon. Cafeteria style serving with delicious hand made udon is a match made in heaven. Menu is fairly priced and starts to add up with the add ons, but if you're looking for a quick inexpensive meal, just getting a small soup with a musubi can fill you right up.

I liked the tempura selection but it was a little cold. The portions are big for the udon even for the smaller size as well. Came here on a Sunday evening and it wasn’t very crowded. Plus, you order and get your food before seating yourself so this makes for a good place to bring a group.

It's okay. Food wasn't anything special, very little included toppings. Soft boiled egg is just a normal egg - not marinated like you would get in a ramen store. The noodles are good. The broth is mid. They also charge a fee for takeout (who does that?). Won't return.

Great food, very filling and delicious. Shrimp tempura is phenomenal, highly highly recommend. Great options for vegans and vegetarians but not that great for gluten free choices. I recommend the Ontama Udon and Kitsune Udon.

Their on-tama udon is one of my go-to comfort foods! I always ask for tempura flakes to add some crunch in my noodle soup. Make sure to try that out for yourself ;) And then I usually eat it with ebi tempura, mushroom tempura and/or vegetable tempura Simple, umami flavors. Mmmm so good!

Great food. So yummy! I had the salmon creme don and it was beyond expectation. I did get all the fixings on my don and they were great addition to the dish. You can find spam musubi here which also another plus. I grew up eating spam musubi in Hawaii and let me tell you… they make it very well, it’s SO good.

Excellent choices for Japan's underrated noodle variety: Udon. Choose anything from the sauce Udon, which has less sauce but carries more flavor, to the kitsune variety which has a delectable piece of fried tofu to top off a soupy wonderland of flavor. I would recommend this to any prospective connoisseur of fine Seattle dining. Please do yourself a favor and stop by this local joint.

I used to come here every week on my lunch break. By far the best udon I have ever had. We had a relative visit recently from out of state and I made sure to bring her here and she said it was really good too. Prices are incredibly reasonable and I always get a few of their onigiri to go as well. They have many side dishes to choose from and they are all good too.

I really wanted noodles so bad. It's too bad none of the staff was wearing masks. All the reviews looked good. I just can't risk it at a place where they don't wear masks, immuno comprimised as I am. Elderly and Immuno-compromised beware! This place is not safe. If they can't wear masks I can only imagine what other kinds of health codes they're breaking.

I didn't know they makes udon there themselves. So you can eat really freshly made udon. When I got, I guess they were out of udon, so needed to wait for a bit, but within 10 min or less, freshly made udon was ready. As this place is located near UW, the price was really nice to my wallet. Fresh udon and tempura with reasonable price, must go place!!

Quick service with yummy food. This place specializes in house-made noodles, which taste amazing. You can get them in broth, in curry, and many other ways. You can also add tempura and other side dishes as you like in a bit of a buffet style service. Don’t forget to bus your tables after though! Super yummy, I love coming here with my friends.

U:Don is very authentic, both food and experience, compared to udon places I've been in Tokyo. I work in the area and I go about once a week. The tempura isn't generally as hot as I'd like given it's pre-prepared. The tempura prices really drive up the price of your overall experience, so I'd say just get 1 or 2 or skip them entirely.

The curry Udon is straight up bad. I'm very surprised this a dish that is thought to be paletteable by anyone. I've had proper Curry Udon in the past and whatever they are serving here under that name is... not good. The tempura is quite good, so it's not all bad. But the chefs should really reconsider the curry Udon dish.

Good for a cold winter day. It's like cafeteria style, you first pick the udon you want, then go down the line to choose sides and toppings and drinks. Prices are affordable and portions are big. You can also grab cold noodles which is good for summer days. The place is kind of small, maybe can fit around 20-25 people

Great budget friendly udon place, I loved the texture of the udon, perfect balance of chewiness. The extra tempuras on the side that you get to choose are also very fresh and delicious.

The place seems very underrated, no one was in when we came inside! Prices are relatively cheap for amazing food and awesome service. The Kitsune Udon is my personal favorite; the marinated tofu is out of this world. 100% would come again.

If you're looking to try udon this isn't a bad place. The noodles aren't super great, but not bad for someone new to udon. There are also a bunch of other Japanese things you can order like tempura and gyudon (my favorite). I really love the atmosphere too. The staff if is pretty friendly and the music is great!

I highly recommend the Niku Udon (white bowl); it's a clear very flavorful broth. Black bowl was curry udon, also good but broth was too thick for my liking. Tempura sides were nice and crispy. Friendly staff and good pricing.

Got the kitsune soup udon (has the tofu) and it was delicious!! The tofu is sweet and savory and the broth is so good. Love the seaweed and green onion and add ons. There are appetizers you can get too and a decent amount of seating - it is often very crowded though. Still, I highly recommend!

Fast service with great food! Got the Niku Udon and it was quite delicious! They also serve tempura which is a little pricey, but is worth it in the end! Forewarning that they do charge for regular sized to-go containers, so make sure to eat most of your food/order how much you will eat so you don't waste!

I remember this place being the first spot I ever tried on the ave. The Niku and the curry are my favorites. The sides are what gives this place 5 stars. Price wise, it is as expensive or as cheap as you make it. Whole lot of options, warm, and cozy. Perfect for Seattle weather or when Pho doesn't cut it.

I always have as great time here. I like the fresh noodles. They're not as heavenly as artisanal handmade noodles from someplace fancy, but they're a cut above what I can get most places. And I always enjoy pigging out on the tempura selection. Definitely in my rotation of places to grab a meal.

This is my favorite udon place, however I went with some friends recently and hopefully it was just an off-day but it was all terrible. Not a single one of 4 of use took more than two bites before going and getting pizza. I really hope this is a one time thing. :(

Clean and tidy environment. The noodle and soup and tempura use only small amount of oil, which is very nice. I like the way they display their food in a straight line and make customers pay the bills at the end of line. This is so much more efficient than having someone serving around tables.

I ordered the salmon cream udon for lunch today and WOW it was freakin delicious. If ramen and clam chowder had a baby it would be this deliciousness. I opted to add chili oil, a soft boiled egg, green onion, and ginger and I loved how it turned out. Will definitely be coming back for more!

Both the niku udon and tan tan we're super yummy. I really like the deep fried food bar with tons of options to pick from. I'm still pretty new to udon but I enjoyed this place and the vibe it gives. Pricing seems a little steep but with the pandemic most places have increased menu prices.

Delicious freshly made noodles served in a variety of ways with different sauces and toppings. There’s a variety of fried veggies (tempora) and foods (gyoza, takoyaki, etc) you can buy at a pretty decent price. Some deserts. Fast and friendly service with seating indoors. Highly recommend!

A large bowl of soup noodles is SIX DOLLARS. All caps emphasizes what a ridiculous deal that is so your frugal mittens won't have to dip too deeply into your wallet. A self serve side bar makes for invested customers and happy outcomes. Service is speedy and seating is usually available.

Very fresh noodles. I love the niku udon here! The portion is really large with a low price. Service is fast and it is fun to see my noodles made in front of my eyes. I cannot even finish half of the medium size after I filled all my stomach with udon... Highly recommend this!

Friendly service, reasonable prices, and really good noodle. Got mine in sauce with ginger rather than soup and would definitely do that again. Highly recommend, but would suggest skipping the tempura-battered sides, which seem pricey and aren't nearly as good as the noodles.

I like how they make their noodles fresh and you can watch the process. Very entertaining! Minus one star for this location because it's not clean, at least not as clean as the 2nd location in Capital Hill. I think the new one in CH also has new items on the menu too.

I often come by this place when I’m doing work around UW. The service is efficient, they actually make the udon noodles themselves and the ingredients are fresh. It’s nice to find a Japanese restaurant that actually makes Japanese food the way it’s supposed to taste.

Always delicious! Hot soup on a summer's day is not out of the question. Also, this is the only place I've seen that serves Jones soda from tap. Try the kitsune bowl! I was also surprised by the fried setsuna sweet potato... tastes a little like a pancake with syrup!

Fresh udon and union. The style is similar to marukame undo in hawaii. Self serve and you can pick your toppings. The udon comes in hot soup or cold or mix with sauce. Wish the portion of the meat is bigger. The tempura just so so to me. Overall we enjoyed our meal.

I grew up in Japan. Tates and service are ok. Our noodles are warm, not hot... Maybe for westerners but any kind of udon or noodle supposed to be served piping hot except cold noodle for summer. I could cook them better especially soup even if store bought soup mix.

The noodles are amazing, made fresh daily and you can even watch them make it. Portions are reasonable and the dishes are customizable. Their Adirondack tempora is also delicious. Their fast and friendly service completes the experience and keeps you coming back.

My favorite place on the ave. Im here often. The concept is great and efficient. Everything I've ordered has always been good. You get your money's worth and can eat as much as you want to pay for. Can get busy, but the assembly line format keeps things moving.

Straightforward, delicious and fast noodle bar. If you want a quick bite to eat that is a bit healthier than other fast food on the Ave check it out. The dining area was also clean and comfortable. The tempura was also pretty good for the price.

As a food counter type place, not much customer service required, but our service was good. The food was great quality, and it's always served up lightning quick. Cleanliness was maybe 3/5 but it doesn't take too much away from the experience.

Don't knock it until you try it: Goma Tan Tan Zaru. Cold noodles never tasted so good. Overall, this small chain is pleasant with lots of hot options (and cold ones too!) to suit your palette! Udon noodles are a delightfully thick texture lol.

An excellent Japanese noodle option at a budget price. Food service is witch and efficient using a cafeteria model. They offer good soup options, with their dashi broth and curry both excellent. In addition, they sell tempura per item.

The katsu curry Udon is SO good. The cooks and workers are all nice, and the venue is very hot which is nice in the fall and winter. Every time I go to the ave with my boyfriend I always want to come back - I highly recommend U:Don !
