Picture this-you are driving/walking down a dark street in an otherwise quiet neighborhood and lo and behold, you look up only to find these gorgeous hues of warmth peeking from inside. What you don’t realize when you walk inside this quaint, stunning, carefully curated bookstore is being serenaded by a sheer labor of love. The family who owns this gem has provided a haven for this neighborhood, a refuge for bibliophiles who love the excitement of holding, touching, smelling a book, a place where you can sit by the fire and converse deeply, or find a quiet nook and get lost in a story, perhaps even yours. Aside from the stunning and gorgeous architecture, this is not only a bookstore (and a very fine one indeed), it is a place of both connection and solitude, a place to get completely immersed in the joy and wonder of browsing and reading, but most importantly, a place to be held with love.

I recently visited Undercover Bookstore and was blown away by the selection and ambiance. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by Lynn, who was more than happy to assist me find what I was looking for after I got a chance to explore. She didn't interupt the process. Definitely appreciated. The bookstore has a wide range of books from classics to best sellers and even had some rare editions. The vibe was cozy and inviting with a warm atmosphere that made it easy to spend hours browsing through the shelves. The prices were reasonable, and I felt good knowing that I was supporting a local business. Overall, I had delightful experience uncovering used books at Undercover bookstore. 10/10 recommend .

Absolute best book store in Chicago, hands down. The book selection is incredible, you will find every book you didn’t know you need and then some. There are books from every genre you can imagine, many rare and quirky, but also tons of modern titles from new releases. I found a book that I had been looking for for months!! The owners are so kind and helpful, but also just let you browse peacefully. The fireplace perfects the ambiance, I could wander around here forever. They also rotate out books every month so there’s always something new to see. Loved undercover books, definitely coming back!!

It’s so cozy and welcoming here it takes a minute to realize just how absolutely beautiful it is, too: the meticulous care in every detail. The entry door is worth a visit itself! A lovingly hand-crafted portal into a magical world. Walls boasting the work of featured local artists. So much fun to explore Undercover’s juicy selection of previously-loved books, including some rare signed and vintage gems. Left w arms full of fiction, mythology, memoir, and more. Can’t wait to return.

Undercover Books is the kind of place that might be described in the rare and used books they sell: you happen upon an intriguing exterior; inside it is cozy, with stacks of books artfully arranged, and the shop stretches back farther than you imagined. The proprietor is friendly and knowledgeable, telling you the tale of how a particular book made its way to the collection. It's a place worth visiting again and again - exactly the kind of small business every community needs.
