"It's just ridiculous how they are managing appointments"
The worst booking system ever. I tried to call and each time I get disconnected. I always call as soon as they open at 8h45 precisely because otherwise there is no chance of getting an appointment (but this is limited for me because I have a 9am start some days). The one time I got through I had to wait 45mins in a queue to speak to someone and when I finally got there I was told to call back the next day because they “could only book same day appointments”. I don’t need a same day appointment, I just need an appointment. I also tried booking through the NHS App, but it kept displaying “no bookings available at this time” so that was useless as well. On top of that, there was no follow-up on my medical issue. No thanks to the booking service, I managed to get an appointment. The doctor saw me and she was good. She got me an appointment at the hospital for an ultrasound which came back with nothing abnormal. After that, I didn’t get a follow-up appointment or any other tests. It is now TWO MONTHS later and I still have the same medical issue and I am trying to get an appointment with the SHS today. (To no avail so far) I don’t blame the doctor, I blame the University for not providing an effective health-care plan and the SHS management for taking on more patients then they can handle and not employing more receptionist to answer the phone. Also the phone line has a 10 minute message about coronavirus, so does the 111 service, so the people who are calling for a different reason need to waste their time on it. I suggest a separate health-line be set up for corona virus, or a “press 3” option for it.
I’ve had SO many problems with different doctors prescribing me the exact same dosage of my prescription but they’ve always messed it up. I’ve had one doctor randomly changed my one prescription and split my doses into two prescriptions so i had to pay for 2 charges instead of 1. She also didnt put forward my request of having several months so I had to make yet another call to book an appointment with another doctor. As a student, money is hard to come by and having to pay for two prescriptions was terrible… Another time, she told me off for getting off my medication as I ran out but I was never scheduled for another check up which is needed for my prescription. Another doctor rang me up for a check up and never put through my prescription to boots and then that was another three phone calls to fix the mistake. Honestly an incompetent service from the gps. The telephone operators are nice though but still not sure how they haven’t hired better staff after all these complaints that have been going on for years…
I'm truly surprised at the low reviews the GP surgery is receiving; this is genuinely the best GP I have ever been registered to, and am gutted I'm having to leave the practice after graduating. For both my mental and physical health, I have received exceptional care from the staff here. Every GP I've been to, I am greeted with the rudest reception staff, however the ladies here have always been very nice to me. One of the front desk staff noticed me panicking on my first trip to the practice and immediately took me to see Dr Jo Temple, who went above and beyond for me. Jo is hands down the BEST and most professional doctor I have ever had. Apart from one male doctor who told me I was "wasting NHS resources" by requesting an "unnecessary blood test" (I wish I knew his name), the staff here are all wonderful. Thank you all so much for everything you have done for me and my health these past three years.
Honestly I’ve never had a bad experience with the student health service, even during Covid times. The call times always go down quite quickly even though you have to queue, and they always ask why you need an appointment and arrange one for the soonest date available or if it’s urgent, a same day appointment and this is always done for me. Usually they can do phone call appointments which is ideal because then you don’t have to go in, and sometimes it over runs but that’s not their fault! Every time I have gone in as well, the wait hasn’t been too long over, and the doctors and nurses I’ve seen have been nice. Just as they have, it’s the same with the call appointments - all the doctors and nurses are really lovely (ones I’ve had). They are way better than my GP back home so I’d recommend! Every time I have an issue they always sort it out:)
It's just ridiculous how they are managing appointments. They are just taking advantage of a pandemic that is already behind us. They only arrange phone appointments, and after weeks of waiting for your appointment, the don't call and send a text to say you didn't answer. I call every time as soon as the message appears and tell them that maybe lines are faulty but they refuse to connect me to the doctor. They MUST provide another way of connecting than the one way phone call which fails so often. Why can't they just let us call them at the time of our appointment?!
The student health service is horrific, the receptionist think they are the doctors and seem to think they can dictate whether you need an appointment or not. You will get bounced around from team to team saying that you need to email only to be told to call like you did in the first place, but then you will have to wait in a queue for an hour only to be told you can't have an appointment, or someone will call you later and they never do. Save your time and register for a different GP because nothing will get done for you under this service. Ridiculous.
Moved home from uni last summer and required my medication to be sent to a pharmacy near my home. I changed my nominated pharmacy in advance and then requested my medication. The request was put through as approved but the script was never sent to my pharmacy or the pharmacy I was registered with in Bristol. This service then shut down for summer and would not reopen until September forcing me to either go into withdrawal or get a private prescription. This is not fair to students. People's health is at stake. Students, find a local GP instead.
Jesus Christ they don’t care. I’ve basically lost all ability to use my right shoulder currently and for the past 2 weeks I’ve tried to contact them and book with them, been ignored been sent through the wringer, been wrongly sent to a and e, and my symptoms have gotten worse. If you have any nerve injury or anything like that, for the love of god, go privately. Take out a loan and pay for the medical treatment, what ever you do don’t go through this. It’s almost as painful as paralysis, and I currently have it. The gps just don’t care
utterly useless. I have been trying to sort out my adhd med prescription with them for over a month now. I’ve had my address typed in wrong, had doctors forget to send it off, been sent to talk to someone that apparently wasn’t even a nurse. Not to mention some of the receptionists are really passive aggressive, they haven’t helped at all and only added to the issue. I’ve gotten really behind on work and my mental has plummeted as a result, awful experience. Wishing I could go back to my gp at home.
I had some blood tests done and the GP called me that same day saying that I needed to call them back urgently. The doctor that spoke to me actually snapped at me and had a go at me because I was talking too much and she said she needed to make lots more calls(basically that she was in a rush). Surely it was understandable that I would be nervous and waffling if a doctor tells me that they have some urgent news to tell me? I think that was quite rude and insensitive given the circumstances
Good doctors but unfortunately can't say the same for the receptionists. One in particular is especially passive aggressive and had a go, for me having recently had appointments for 2 separate issues, which resulted in me confusing the names of the two doctors... not to mention one of the issues was a concussion so confusion would be understandable anyway... There's no need for her to treat people the way she does, unfortunately I've seen other people have it far worse from her than me
Called asking for a specific medication that I had been prescribed on a prior occasion for a specific condition that I usually get a flare up of when cold weather sets in each year. Receptionist said I couldn't speak to a doctor and advised me to ask a pharmacist for advice, then cut me off and hung up on me. Made me feel unimportant and as if I were being treated like some kind of drug seeker, as if she should be making these calls. I'm a medical student myself.
The doctors here are incredible and this review is absolutely not describing their performance, but that of admin. To book a same day appointment is near impossible. Be prepared to call at 8.45 only to be told that your call cannot be taken (due to high volume of calls). By 9.30 you will probably get though, at which point you will be told there are no available appointments that day. Myself and my flatmates have faced this issue multiple times.
The doctor apparently forgot to send my antidepressant prescription off for 5 days. Then I was given a medically urgent prescription since I was experiencing withdrawal symptoms and this took over 24 hours to be sent to the pharmacy, and then the pharmacy still didn't receive it from the doctor and I could only pick it up due to the receptionist helping me and sending me a code. I would recommend that students should find a local GP instead.
Does not function. You’ll be stuck on hold from 8:45 til 9:30 only to be told all appointments have gone and to try and again tomorrow. Rinse and repeat. Doesn’t matter how urgent. The only time I have ever talked to a doctor is when 111 put me through as an emergency. Got a phone call 6 hours later from a doctor at the BSHS telling me they couldn’t help me at all. How can they call this a health service?
I registered online and was officially registered with the practice the same day. The reception staff were extremely polite, kind and helpful and the doctor I spoke to on the phone was the same. I received an appointment the same day and the nurse who saw me was very helpful and kind. Overall a great experience for a uni student who has just moved to the city.
Admin staff takes a ridiculously long time to reply to any requests and if they do reply, it’s often short, callous and vague. This GP practice is a shame. I have no complaints about the doctors, just the idly admin staff and receptionists who clearly have no idea what they’re doing and are constantly taking their own sweet time to reply to urgent requests.
You may have heard the phrase ' it's not brain surgery'. For a bunch of people who could have been brain surgeons Student health service have managed to prove only one thing; booking a appointment with them and dealing with a member of staff who has compassion or competency is indeed harder than brain surgery. Don't listen to the uni, just get a regular GP.
Have needed medical advice a few times during my first term at Uni and each time the reception has been so rude. I didn't return with a condition as soon as I should have as I kept putting it off hoping it would get better so I didn't have to deal with the rude receptionists and be made to feel like this. Students at Bristol - look for another practice!
I’ve tried calling 5 times it’s 9:02 the service opened at 8:45 everytime I get past all the pre recorded info it just says your call cannot be connected and hangs up. However once you’re through (I had to book through the nhs app) the doctors and nurses are amazing dr mobbs was very kind to me today and very helpful.
I was very skeptical of joining this surgery after seeing all the bad reviews, but I've had a fantastic experience so far! The GPs I have seen have been so kind and taken my concerns seriously. Even when I wasn't in Bristol and needed medication they prescribed it to a pharmacy near where I was.
Terrible experience with this GP practise- particularly with whoever takes calls on reception. I was appalled by the hostility (and frankly unkindness) of the woman I spoke to. The GPs have only ever been lovely, but the receptionist I encountered today was truly nasty. Don't use this practise.
Absolutely terrible. I’d give less than zero star if I could. Doctors can’t even diagnose strep, they accuse you of lying, don’t know which antibiotics to prescribe, waste your time, and good luck if you need to see a specialist. Only way is to go to court for medical negligence.
The two advanced in years ladies at the reception are extremely rude. One of them. the eldest one, pretends not to understand a single word when someone speaks with a foreign accent. The two of them shout at people, especially foreigners.
Everything went really well, the Dr was very helpful. Cannot complain about the booking process either. The last time was the same. I think the bad rating might be due to the potentially disproportionate amount of rage reviews.
Really poor, daughter at Bristol uni offered no treatment for infection. Had to collect and drive her home to Bournemouth for GP to diagnose infection and treat. Not a medical service and Bristol Uni should be ashamed.
There is a specific lady that answers the phone that is honestly SO rude. She picks up the phone and from the moment she starts talking, you understand that the last thing she wants to do is help you. Disgrace!
Tell me to book the same day appointment at 8.45. start calling from 8.43. the service is closed. Calling from 8.45, busy line until now, and I even skipped one lecture to do this. Great British healthcare
Called this morning to consult a GP due to my exacerbating symptoms, was promised an emergency GP appointment - received absolutely nothing. Being ill whilst attending Bristol University is a nightmare.
I liked this place because it was always well staffed and provided an excellent service for students in need of general health check ups including appointments with consultants and consultations.
Called at 8:45 on the dot and am still waiting to get an emergency appointment… was given number 39 in the queue. Also never let you see a real doctor only a nurse. Not fit for purpose
Amazing GP, sad to be leaving. Thank you for everything, all the staff have been amazing, always really polite and friendly when calling. Thank you Angela for being super helpful.
Called in to get an appointment and was booked in within ten minutes for an appointment in two days time. Doctor was really professional and had the issue sorted quickly.
Had a very bad experience with the gynaecologist and was left traumatised. Doctors are not gentle at all, started ble*ding at home. Will never go back
Potentially the most useless doctors I’ve ever spoken to, they do not listen at all, do not register with them, find a better doctors in Bristol.
Absolute incompetence with knowledge regarding medication detox. Dr vicky stansfield treats you like a cow needing to be herded on.
The staff is great. It usually takes a long time to get an appointment and most days there's a one to two hour wait to get in.
Very efficient and timely appointment allocation. The healthcare professionals are all caring and very helpful.
Extremely helpful staff, wonderful service. They really helped in a time of crisis, could not recommend enough.
I hope you never get ill at Bristol university because with this admin I’ve felt close to death many times
Really pleasant doctors, they've always been understanding and helpful. Wait times arent too bad either.
You will only get 'support' for mental health if you are feeling suicidal, otherwise they don't care.
Really lovely and helpful staff, was so easy to register and get the prescriptions I needed.
Useless at helping students with mental health issues, only solution is to prescribe drugs.
Same day appointments available, easy access to physiotherapy and friendly staff.
Best doctors ive ever been with, they are so nice and welcoming and quick
Th service is too slowly, I wait one month get the treatment.
Very thorough and good service from the nurse I talked to.
Most of the services are great, except the MATS service
Every time I've called, I've been treated very kindly.
Really poor system, the admins are awful.
Imposible to book appointment...
Terrible in every way imaginable
Always great!
