I started coming here nearly 20 years ago, back when the clinic was owned by an actual person, and I always felt extremely loyal to the business and the people. Predictably, being bought by a large veterinary healthcare chain has changed things, and not for the better. I appreciate honesty and transparency, and repeatedly being charged for "consultations" and other services I was expressly told weren't being performed is kind of a red line. So is fear-based medical care, especially after some staff privately inform me that the products and services urgently being pushed aren't actually called for in my pet's case. I imagine the vets (absurd level of staff turnover, by the way) are under enormous pressure to upsell. I'm not necessarily against spending money on pets, when appropriate. But after the last couple of visits, I couldn't fight the feeling I was being worked, and not for the good of my pets. Also: Insane pricing structures. Seriously, wow. The small bottle of saline for a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure? $134.75. A few days or weeks from now, I expect a polite response will appear below this review, expressing concern and asking if I'd like to talk with a staff representative about my recent experiences. With all due respect, I would not. The company's the problem, not the people. Everyone I've interacted with there--even after the change of ownership--was professional and kind, and I have nothing but compassion for them. Given how VCA treats their customers, I can only imagine how they treat their staff.

Cheryl Warner who recently retired as vet at this location, was our vet for over 25 years. I've seen 2 other vets at this location since then. Both a waste of time and $$$. The last visit was with vet Liana. My cat was possibly having issues with his teeth. My cat was sticking his tongue out and swallowing a lot. Not his normal. Read online, usually a sign of a bad tooth. She didn't even know how to get a good look at my cats teeth!! Because she couldn't, ruled out that wasn't the reason and said could be cancer in his throat, x-rays, etc. Lately my cat has been eating much more soft food than dry. Mmmmm This office has always tried to get you to buy a prescription, tests, x-rays, etc, that is not necessarily necessary, but wanting to make a dollar and charge A LOT for everything. Liana said should give my cat a prescription for pain as felt has arthritis in his back leg. When asked if has ANY side effects, she said no, but her facial expression said yes. When I got home, looked up the drug and is not to be given to an animal with kidney issues. She should know my cat has the start of kidney issues as I told her the type of kidney food I give him and is drinking more water. Blood tests, etc is stated in my cats file about his kidneys. A big company bought out this Vet location and now feels like Kmart. I will not be returning... Will look for another vet.

Dr. Liana Granum went above and beyond in the care of our two cats, especially our cat who recently experienced a health emergency. After we brought him in for testing, Dr. Granum called us ASAP with the bad news that his kidneys were extremely unwell. She compassionately explained everything over the phone while we processed what needed to happen next (he needed to go to emergency care). She literally texted with us on a Friday evening to help us navigate where to take him and made sure our questions were answered. After his ER stay, we brought him back to VCA for a follow-up and Dr. Granum called us to give us the good news that our cat may not be actively dying. She, again, stayed on the phone with us as we asked a million questions and received further care instructions. She absolutely did not need to spend so much time with us but every time we interact with her, she sounds sympathetic and understands that we love our cat very much. I can tell Dr. Granum really loves pets and cares about helping them feel better. Whether we have months left with our cat or years, we got so much additional quality, pain-free time with him because of guidance from Dr. Granum. Thank you.

I was in with my dog and asked to pick up a box of of a Canine Probiotic supplement, I was told I could not because I didn't have a RX for it. Really? This is a supplement that is sold over the counter in a great many pet stores and online, no Rx needed, so that is what I did. One of their top vets retired, and all the staff has changed. I'm growing more uneasy about bringing my dogs in. I have a check up and rabies vac. scheduled for one of my dogs next month. I really want VCA to continue to be my vet, but only time will tell. UPDATE: Have moved all my animals to a different vet, in all good concience I coulnd't put my animals through VCA any longer. The latest in a pack of lies. I tried to get their flea medication filled, they didn't, made up a lie about the inacuracy of my dogs weight on the RX, tried blaming Chewy. might have gotten away with it except I was looking at the RX with Chewy...and everything checked out on their end. VCA messed up, and didn't want to admit it, so instead they refused the RX. I also am not comfortable with my dogs being treated without me present, that is just wrong.

Would absolutely not recommend anyone go to VCA North Portland, and I will never return. We took our pets there for years and generally had a good experience, although it was expensive (and they were open on the weekends). That changed since our last visit. Our pet was on medication (the refill time has gone from 48 hours to 7 business days, and they are only open on weekdays) that we needed refilled. They required blood work to refill, but the cost of that which went up 60% since we did it last year (original estimate with "old price" was $285 including visit, "new price" for this year was $390, and the estimate they gave after we were in the office turned into $565 which was lowered back to "only" $390 after I pushed back). On top of that, after a 90 minute visit where they were unable to even take the blood draw, I was able to walk out with the $25 of medication we needed. But they took their pound of flesh on the way out with a $115 office visit charge for the 5 minutes the vet saw our pet. 0/10 would not recommend.

The vet and the staff are absolutely fabulous. They are professional and caring. I love that she used baby talk with my old guy. It put him at ease. It's easy to get to. There's a large parking lot in the back with numbered spaces. They come out and get your pet and bring them back to you when they're done. If the visit is going to take a while, there is the Goodwill right next door and food venues and a coffee shop nearby. My only criticism would be that they want you administer Gabapentin before you take your a pet to the vet. They are expensive enough that I feel that handling frightened animals should be their job. It's already stressful for pet and pet parent without being forced to administer pills. Other than that, if they have had half stars this would be a four and a half star rating. All in all, a steller veterinary hospital and staff.

Last month we sought a surgical consult for our older dog. Not taking surgery lightly we met with three different veterinary hospitals as our vet doesn’t do general surgery anymore. The surgeon at VCA, whom due to covid restrictions I neither met in person nor saw through a window, suggested we put our dog down instead of surgery. Contextually, you should know this was not a life or death surgery and the vet had already spoken to the relative good health of our dog. In her words, “at this age you can always just consider putting them down.” I was floored. She had my dog in her possession and I had no immediate way of getting her back. I do not recommend this kind of callous, heartless care to anyone. Our dog received the care she needed from a much better practice. She’s still happy and ALIVE today.

This vet used to be good, but they have greatly declined in the past few years. I have taken my older dog here for some time and my new puppy more recently. When we brought them in for a recent checkup they ignored almost everything we asked them to assess. My older dog had a recent burst of a tumor on her spleen (which VCA didn't catch but another vet caught in less than 20 minutes!) and we unfortunately ran out of the medicine for her because of online delays. But VCA has the medicine on hand but will not release/sell it to us because it is for "in house only", yet another vet sold it to us and you can order online. This clinic does not care about you or your pet, there are FAR better places to go in the same vicinity. Avoid at all costs

Can’t say enough great things about this VCA location. Our dog got attacked a week ago and needed emergency surgery. The largest ER in town held him for almost 20 hours without so much as giving him a pain pill. The next day we contacted the VCA (which is also where we take our guy for everything on a regular basis) to see if they could fit him in and they accommodated us. Long-story short, they took great care of him - as they always do- and we always know he’s in great hands when he’s there. All vets are busy these days so I just wanted to recognize all the great people here for all their compassion and great work. Thank you VCA North Portland!

  • Sarah Yusavitz

Excellent customer service and a wonderful, caring staff. I recently needed to bring my pup in somewhat urgently, as she had had surgery days before and managed to break her e-collar in half that afternoon. Though I didn't have an appointment, my dog was seen almost immediately and I was given two collars -- one as a loaner, one to keep -- totally free of charge. I was so impressed by VCA's responsiveness and their trust in allowing me to take one of the cone collars to try and return. It's a true testament to the clinic's community-minded nature and their incredible generosity toward pets in need.

My mother-in-law and I took her cat, who was very ill, to VCA North Portland clinic to put her kitty to rest. The staff and doctor were very compassionate, caring, and supportive and helped make the sad process calm and easier. They gave us ample time and clearly described the process. The kitty's ashes were returned within about 2 weeks in a very nicely wrapped wooden box. In addition, a lock of hair and paw print were returned in a nice card from the office. We both have been clients of this clinic for years and our animals have always received the best care.

  • Tara Fallon

We loved this Vet for 14 years! Over the last few years, it has been touch and go. I have appreciated the care from our vet techs, the front staff, and the vets. Unfortunately our last visits and calls have been pretty intense and not so great. I can't go to a vet that is checking my sweet dog and says "I am not a dog person" and muzzles my dog and scares him. He is the sweetest and all the other staff has said so. And then there is Cathy, she needs to really work on listening and being sincere and caring for the customer. Won't be back, way too stressful.

  • Allyson Marrs

The vets and the techs at VCA North are fantastic with animals. My puppy is never scared to return here, and she has received good care during her visits. However, the front office staff lack professionalism and kindness. In every interaction we've had, the staff have been short, sarcastic, or downright rude, and it ruins the rest of the experience at VCA. If you choose them as a vet, know that you will get good care for your pet, but you will have to go through receptionists who will talk down to you and be short with you every single time.

  • Kelly Indrieri

We are new patients at VCA North Portland and I have to say we are extremely happy with their level of care, the kindness of the staff, and how they interact with our four dogs. Dr. Mitchell is a pro and was so gentle and sweet with our dogs. She spent a couple of hours with me and our pops just getting to know them and answering my questions. The entire staff was lovely. Yes, it can take a little while to get in as they are pretty booked up, but I’m glad we waited. Would definitely recommend them to other pet owners.

  • Melissa Tepper

I've been bringing my pets here for years. They are always so excellent with my dog and now my cats. The doctors are thorough and understanding. I really appreciate their communication and willingness to go above and beyond to make sure my pets get the care they need. And in the last few months I've seen just how hard the front office staff works to squeeze pets in and make sure everyone gets what they need. Many thanks to VCA for taking care of my pets!

I have been going to North Portland vet hospital for 28 years but ever since this long time locally owned veterinary office sold its business to VCA, the quality of its customers service has suffered. It is cold, and impersonal. There isn’t even one single piece of art/decoration in the place. This adds to the impersonal feeling of this business. Time to try a new veterinarian clinic. Hayden meadows Pet clinic is nearby and it has a 4 1/2 star rating.

  • Mike DeLain

Such a great place! Last week, a few days before Christmas, they helped me when my dog was having trouble walking and standing; I wasn’t a patient there but since it was for the fact my boy couldn’t even stand on his own and a lot of places were booked or not accepting new patients; the manager, Eric, made an acceptance since he wanted to help and I can’t thank him enough! Great place and thankful for all of the staff there that helped me!

  • M. Madsen

Genuinely caring staff. They take time and don’t act rushed like most vet clinics. Very friendly and personable. Take the time to explain everything to you and give you options. My dog actually gets excited to go here. They really seem to care about their customers and pets. I’m always able to get in at the last minute. The vet personally called me to check in too after a visit.

  • Steven Herff

Great staff!! These guys care and are reasonably priced. Edit to my review - These guys just told me they cannot get my dog in to be seen for an emergency this week at all, maybe if I called everyday I could get into the special list and maybe get an appointment. They told me they have too many customers now and do not have the staff to see them all anymore, AVOID THEM.

  • Veronica Veil

I've been taking my pets here since 2004, and I'm guessing it's because they were taken over from a huge corp, but now I can't get my pets in even for an urgency, lately. They need to hire more vets, go back to Saturday and Sunday hours, and stay open later. All services they used to provide. Their 'service' is just awful now, when they used to be very good.

  • Hazel Lynch

Most amazing vet ever. I saw Dr Pepin, and she was the most amazing and gentle professional I’ve ever met! I wish she could be MY doctor! She was so careful and gentle with my cat, who was really nervous, and she was so kind and also super funny. She was super knowledgeable and gives you great info without pushing you towards anything. HIGHLY recommend :)

  • Deana Kovacev

Would not recommend this clinic - they provided me a prescription for my dogs seizures meds and sent it to walgreens where I was charged ~$250 however I later found out that I could buy the exact same pills from Chewy for $18. Absolutely ridiculous and the people who work at this clinic should know better. The Woodstock VCA was much more helpful.

  • Tabetha Smith

Very friendly staff and My Oscar dog was very comfortable with the vet for being the first time seeing a vet. They also have offices across the city and several are open 24 hours and once your member of VCA you can go to any one of them if you need to for 24-Hour services they also have a login ER that's open to anyone at most 24 hour locations

  • Carolyn Asfour

Really expensive, I just wanted to buy some flea medicine for a feral cat, and they wanted to charge me $127. Just to look at the cat, no services and they refused to sell the flea meds with out charging to see the cat. Ridiculous, especially when I found I can just go on Amazon and get a better deal, without being gouged in the pocket book.

  • Kana A

We have had a lot of visits at this clinic in the last year with our dog who was ill, and have been so happy with the care. From the front office to the techs and vets, we have had kind, compassionate care during a very stressful time for our pup. The price for care seems fair and comparable to other clinics in the city. We are happy here!

  • Ruby Corazana

Everybody I interacted with was sweet as pie to both my kitty & me during our first visit today. The doctor addressed ALL my many concerns & had me feeling much better about my baby's health by the end of our session. I can really tell that the staff here genuinely loves animals. I look forward to bringing my other kitty here!

  • Kealan Lindekugel

This place has taken care of two of my animals over the years. Twice now they have fit me in at the last minute. Dr. Bohrer respected that I couldn't afford expensive diagnostic testing and offered some limited treatment options that helped my cat tremendously. Definitely my veterinary home and I strongly recommend them.

  • Juliana Nagan

Amazing experiences here with the vets and staff. Dr. Bohrer was so helpful with my cat when he was suddenly ill. She was super patient and answered all my questions, really took the time to explain all the options to me and help understand what was going on with my cat. Absolutely incredible care, thank you!

  • David Cohen

I bring my two cats here. Everyone on staff have been informative and kind. When there was an issue with a blood test that indicated an issue that required more in depth testing, VCA refunded me for the follow up tests tests after realizing there was an error in the collection of the blood samples.

  • GinxAZ

Extremely knowledgeable doctors who also treat their pet owners as intelligent people, unlike another chain (Banfield, are your ears burning?). Be prepared to part with a large amount of money, however. Overall, would recommend. Avoid Dr Tiau; she struggles to interact with humans.

  • Isa Dean

Convenient location for those of us in Nopo. Interior is a bit outdated with no handicapped door opening features. Staff and vet were friendly and helpful. Being even 10m late means they'll cancel your appointment - luckily there was a backup one starting in less than an hour.

  • Monica Hernandez

The vet assistants & reception were very nice & welcoming but I didn't much care for the veterinarian & the way she pushed all these tests be done on my dog. He is in good health but needed 1 vaccine updated. I'll stick with Banfield since I know them & trust them.

  • Mike McGee

We've taken our standard poodle here for several years, and they are the best! Kind and courteous, everyone on the staff shows the greatest concern for the animal, and the people. I'd give them 10 stars if I could! YMMV, but we are happy here.

  • Krista Robbins

I can’t recommend them highly enough, especially Dr. Chalam. The staff are always extremely friendly and that’s really indicative of a great workplace. I feel confident bringing my cats here for routine examinations and if there’s something

Had to take my cat Meeko twice to VCA in one week . They were able to fit my cat in on both instances. Everyone is truly amazing, and caring. I felt reassured, and all of my questions were answered. Meeko was provided with some medication

We've taken our kitties to VCA for about 7 years now. They are the most compassionate, welcoming, and wonderful group of vets and vet techs I have ever met. Even if the news they have to provide is not ideal, they are very good at bedside

I’m always treated with care and respect, and so are my pets! The staff is kind and compassionate, well trained, and always seem to be hard at work! I love the fear free handling they provide for my dog and cat.

Weekend dogsitting, needed info seriously! (to me ) Called the number on the fridge. She knew! Knew the situation, and what to do. The pit bull/great dane would be OK.

They treat my dogs well, but they can be a little pricey and get some of the little details wrong. But my primary focus is the medical care so they earned 4 stars.
