I’ve visited this shop once before. Purchased 2 pastries to try. A pear tart (it tasted old and stale). A peach tart (it was decent, nothing amazing). I decided to give them another try today and I regret ever walking in there. I placed my order and asked kindly if I could please have the tart in the front (it looked fresh and perfect compared to the ones in the back). The person behind the counter asked, “Why? It’s all the same. Why do I have to get the one in the front for you?” I was shocked but I said, well it looks fresh and it’s the nicest looking one. He told me that it doesn’t matter and they are all the same and he will not let me choose the one I want. I said no problem, I’ll just head out but you should consider providing folks with better customer service in the future. He said, “I have been working for 41 years, much longer than you. I know customer service. I am better at it than you.” I told him that arguing with a customer is not really helping his situation. He said he didn’t care, that choosing the pastry I want is stupid. I kept quiet because there was no point in arguing with a person like that. It was obvious that he just did not like how I look and decided to treat me poorly. I took a couple pics and left quietly. He served the other person in the shop with a HUGE smile on his face and a pep in his step. You can see her in the pictures attached. BIPOC beware. It doesn’t matter how polite you are in this shop. The moment you walk in you will be judged and treated differently by the person in the picture who I am assuming is the owner, “Vlad”.

We were hungry and walking on The Danforth looking for food. The items displayed in the shop window looked decent. Our little, inner voice did tell us that there was way too much product on display for it to all be fresh. The pasteries were quite terrible. They did not taste fresh at all. Also, the cabbage rolls are huge because they are 90% rice and I threw hot sauce on them to give them some flavour. The potato pancakes were ok but did not come with sour cream. We were charged for but they forgot to pack a loaf of bread and we didn't notice until we got home - too late as we weren't hauling it back across town to The Danforth. Vlad was friendly as was the cashier. The only reason why this isn't a 2-star review is because we asked for the beet salad but we got a red cabbage salad instead and it was quite good. Other reviewers have mentioned food being spoiled and getting items they didn't want. Moral of the story: do not shop when you are hungry, pay attention when they pack your order and listen to your inner voice!

So wanted to give this small business a great review but after my second visit I'm unable to do so. The first time I purchased cabbage rolls, a bavarian donut and a napoleon slice. The cabbage rolls and donut were very good but I did have concerns about the amount of inventory in the store and how can it be all fresh. I even voiced my concerns to the lovely girl behind the counter who assured me that most everything was baked daily except for certain cakes. Alas, the napoleon slice was so stale it was inedible. Today I stopped by and purchased 2 more cabbage rolls and 2 large bavarian donuts. My husband loved the cabbage rolls but unfortunately the donuts were at least 2 days old. Unacceptable - and I will no longer be a customer at this bakery - such a disappointment

Beware of the false advertisement and reviews of this establishment because all these ‘good’ reviews are NOT true. The Owner ‘Vlad’ is a terrible person. This man really needs to learn how to treat and speak to other people. There are other ways of saying things to customers and he is so rude. I don’t care how long you have had a business or worked in customer service. if that is the case and you think you know more than other people than show that because actions speak louder than words and you really shouldn’t own an establishment. other than that the pastries are stale and gave my mom and I ‘the runs’ A health inspector really needs to checkout this place because he is not swapping the old for the new and is selling expired food to people on the Danforth.

We discovered Vlad's bakery during Taste of Danforth festival 2023. My friend decided to by cannoli for us, i was suspicious, usually i would buy them only at Italian places, but this was pleasant surprise, they were excellent. Few days ago I was in the area and decided to visit Vlad's place again. I met Vlad in person, he is so nice and polite. I found poppyseed strudel, my family was happy, they claim that it is like home made. I do not eat poppy seed , i took few danish pastries and cookies (marengo with Dulce du leche), I like them. Yesterday my daughter was in area, she brought cabbage roles and stuffed peppers and few different types of cookies. Everything was delicious. Vlad's has become a routine stop for my family whenever somebody in the area.

Do NOT give these guys business. The owner Vlad is a complete clown. Behind that fake smile and personality he is NOT a good person. The reason he cannot get any of his employees to stay is because he badmouths them behind their backs & will talk about previous girls who have worked here. On top of that the pastries are garbage and gave me and my family the RUNS. I’ve also seen him yelling at one of the girls in the back belittling her capabilities on why she wasn’t good enough to work here and comparing them to the other girls level of how fast they could learn. This is very unprofessional and is no way to run a business. I’m sorry but I am not coming back and will be telling others not to as well.

I went in a bit a few pastries. They were OK, but there are certainly far better bakeries within walking distance of here. The kid working the counter was very sweet, however the guy who came out yelling was not. I had asked for a single baklava, as the price is listed as $4.25 each. The guy yelled at me that they came in packs of two. Perhaps he should list the price for two in that case Considering how mediocre everything I bought was, I am glad I decided to pass on those. Everything was packaged well, and if you are in a pinch I supposed this place will do. However, I would consider searching for other bakeries, as every other place I've eaten near Vlad's is significantly better.

Visited here last week. Vlad’s reminds me of the bakeries we had when I was growing up in Brooklyn! There are so many different slices of cakes you can get, neapolitans, eclairs, several kinds breads and pastries to have with coffee or tea. I got a poppy cake, which is really more of a sweet bread with a filling and a glaze on a top. So delicious and flavourful with being sickeningly sweet. They also have a little table of day old bread & pastries for 1/2 off, if you’re trying to save or make a bread pudding. Plus a hot food section and frozen meals like lasagna and pierogis. Really lovely staff too, I hope they became a staple in the neighborhood. Definitely going back soon!

  • Antos

For the first time I went there I got a donut with my friend. It was decent but not great. When I went back to try a different pastry I took a photo of their selection outside their business for my friend to choose something (I saw they had photos on their google business page so I thought it was fine to take photos) and when I went in the store the owner started having a tantrum. I tried to explain why I took the photo and that I didn’t know he had that rule but he didn’t listen and started yelling and throwing more of a tantrum. The way he spoke to me was honestly disgusting and I suggest he seeks anger management.

  • Jay G

The pastries here are European style, the pastry is nicely dense and not overly sweet. It's the opposite of Tim Horton's, thankfully. I've been here many times and I always receive pleasant service. For Thanksgiving, I purchased the beef pie (pics attached), which was a tasty as it looks. I also purchased a beautiful plum flan and was excited to present something unique at my host's table. As I was processing my purchase the owner delighted in telling me that the flan had some mascarpone, and that there was a layer of cranberry on the crust. That made my so much more excited. It tasted perfect and was a hit.

One of the few places in the east end where I could find jelly donuts in the vein of sufganiyot for Chanukah. Needed several dozen for a couple of events at my school. Ordered them the afternoon before, and they were ready at open the next morning. Vlad makes them by hand, and he’s good for some friendly conversation while you’re there. The mini donuts were much bigger than timbits, and the kids loved them. They’re sold by weight, and it worked out to about a dollar each. Will definitely order again next Chanukah, and hope to get back to try the pierogis and other prepared foods soon.

I have no idea how this place has business. I have never had a good pastry from here. The pastries are NOT FRESH and all of them seem be made with bread dough. The bottom of the cheesecake I had was unsweetened bread dough (and the filling was like... hard?). The donuts I got were unsweetened bread dough (and had a crust? lol) There are simply too many pastries for all but a fraction of them to be made fresh, and my own personal experience eating here - and the experience of many people I have talked to - corroborates this. Something is seriously fishy with all these 5 star reviews.

  • Dakota Moss

Went in a few days ago thinking it was still Von Doughnuts. While initially disappointed, as so many businesses just haven't been able to cut it during the covid pandemic, I was quickly turned around on their selection of pastries and their prices. I got 3 days worth of snack pastries for myself for just under $10, and every item I bought was delicious, even the discounted ones. They even have a hot bar with stuffed cabbage rolls and stuffed bell pepper, which smelled amazing. The blueberry and cheese danish was phenomenal. Definitely worth the stop if you're in the area.

  • Daniel Benson

I tried their so-called 'Grilled Cheese Sandwich last week, and it was quite disgusting. I've never had a grilled cheese that wasn't actually grilled before! The sandwich consists of one of their excellent kaiser buns, cheese is added, and the whole thing nuked so it's hot and the cheese is melted. Even as a 'melted cheese sandwich' it was pretty grim. Stick to the stuff you know, people! Your donuts and pastries are very good, but step away from the sandwiches, please! Or, consult a cookbook about what a grilled cheese sandwich really is.

Excellent food. I come here for the desserts and the treats I've had have been amazing.

Delicious pastries and very helpful staff. We’ve tried everything from the sugar twist, chocolate raspberry cookies, meringue, tarts, cakes and breads. Everything has been delicious and super affordable. It has that handmade touch, so everything isn’t super perfect looking but tastes so good. Highly recommend for a sweet treat on the go. We also tried the chicken, took it home and reheated ourselves as we were walking, it was well flavoured and filling. The potato pancakes are also delicious, especially reheated in an air fryer.

  • Susan Carter

We luckily stumbled upon this gem because of the window showcasing the amazing doughnuts!! Upon entering we were surprised at the variety available. We tried the blueberry cheesecake which was sublime, then the poppy seed roll which was better than my grandma’s, the plum doughnut was spectacular and it is huge and there’s plenty of filling like the poppy seed roll. Also bought and devoured the Hungarian goulash with the tastiest beet salad. We are thrilled that Vlad is just around the corner.

  • Pria

This bakery is life changing for someone like myself who rarely eats sweet treats because they don’t make them like when I was a child. This place is hands down the best bakery in Toronto. Everything I have had is amazing , the donuts, strudel, cheesecakes, pies, chocolate mousse cakes, strawberry tarts, and the muffins. The pastries are light and flaky and the donuts are soft and tasty and all of the fillings are made with fresh fruits. You can taste the love and care with every bite!

  • Kyra

Tried a few treats today and first impressions were great! So many selections and great customer service. The biggest disappointment was the meringue. 3/5 items that I ordered had a meringue component or it’s a meringue itself and it had no flavour at all… the apple and cheese tart was a fave.

dropped by whilst on a walk, and I am so glad to have done so. I tried their donuts, the mango and raspberry, and was pleasantly satisfied. the donuts were not overly sweet, the filling was delicious, and you can taste the fruits as opposed to artificial flavours. The dough is exquisite. The bakery was full of many other delicious looking treats, which I was unfortunate to not try but will come back for more!

  • Dawn

Borscht was $12 and less than mediocre with golfball-size lumps of pure fat. Macaroons were dry and tasteless and ridiculously priced. But worst of all was the apple square bar. It looked great but was dry and inedible. 0 for 3 And while I didn’t order any, the stuffed peppers and cabbage rolls were stewing in a sort of grey water. Nice people but need to clean things up and produce better quality of food.

  • Diana T.

I ordered 2 mini doughnuts : cream one and berry filled one. They were $1 each, great value for money. Lots of tasty filling, they must have been from the day before because tops were dry. I'll be back to try other treats and their hot table with pierogies and cabbage rolls.

The shop is super cute and the prices are excellent. But, you get what you pay for. The challah bread was spongy and stale, the meringue on the lemon pie was made with granulated sugar and the pie crust was soggy. Same goes with the pecan pie. Everything lacked flavour and the consistency were. We also tried a donut, meringue and cream puffs. We took a bit, spat them out and tossed them in the garbage.

  • Anastasiia Humeniuk

I love this place it reminds me of home and childhood. There is even borscht and pierogi! And the cabbage rolls, they’re huge and they’re very tasty, just like my grandmother used to make when I was little! Vlad is always friendly and jokes a lot. Cashiers are always in a good mood too. I like to buy different sweets in this bakery. I often go to buy coffee and sweetness, it makes me feel good all day!

  • Courtney Ch'ng Lancaster

Oh man, I really want to like this place. Everything looks so good and there's so much variety, but I've given it two chances now, and the three things I've bought (a $23 tart, a loaf of bread and a cookie), were SO stale. Crumbly, dry. I think they need to cut back on how much they're producing to maintain quality control. I'd love to make it a regular stop, but I won't be back.

  • Jennifer Munro

Amazing food. Baked good and Eastern European food at good prices. Pierogies with so much variety. Savoury and sweet kinds. Coleslaws, sauerkrauts, cabbage rolls, meatballs. And the selection of baked good. Amazing. Breads and deserts galore. Everything under the sun. Vlad himself is a ray of sunshine and so nice. 100% support this local bakery. I'd buy any donuts he bakes.

  • Vlad Mihailescu

Went here on Taste of Danforth (Sunday) and got their apricot cake, beef tart and lemon horn. The beef tart was nothing special....firm ground meat and semi-cooked pastry. The apricot cake was super sweet with a cheap, sorbet-like filling and served as a gigantic slab. The lemon filled horn was stale and the filling was a cheap, processed cream. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOMB!

I bought two things there, the chocolate donut and some chocolate cake, both were amazing tasted fresh , they have lots of options and they all seem great but I think I would ask the baker if they made the pastries fresh or not ! I won’t be happy if I got something stale or not fresh but I give 5 /5 because what I ordered was definitely out of this world delicious lol

  • Bill Flewelling

Vlad was dismissive and rude when I asked if he sold multigrain bread. On my only previous visit the clerk sold me a loaf that she said was multigrain but that turned out to be light rye. Not recommended—maybe the service is better for customers who speak the owner's mother tongue, but as a mere English-speaking sixth-generation Canadian, I was not impressed.

  • Susan Hilton

I wish there was 10 stars because this place is a gem!! Hand made ... Everything is delectable!! even the cream is hand made by the owner who I assume is Vlad :) Both products were very well packaged and as you can see it survived well on a trip on the bus! Thank you again :) follow up .. I couldn't take it and ATE THEM BOTH!! there was my dinner lol

  • Veranika Lemeshava

I’ve tried all bakeries on Danforth and this one is the best. Pastries and cakes are full of flavor, made with reasonable amount of sugar (comparing to some other bakeries down the street) and are just very tasty. I did have one unpleasant experience with a stale pastry, but all other times it was great. Their Borscht and Dumplings are tasty too.

  • Danna Zhang

An absolute gem on the Danforth. The bakery can accommodate peanut allergies which is a rarity. Most items do not contain, but make sure to ask the owner and head baker before buying. If there is an item that you want but may contain, try calling in to see if it can be made to be peanut free. Vlad is super friendly and more than happy to help!

  • Steven Oliver

Tried pasties only. They look really good. Presentation is definitely not lacking. However there’s a bit of a hit or miss risk with the pastries. We got 3 different items. Two of the three pastries were delicious. Unfortunately, the third pastries tastes stale. It could have been an oversight, but it does knock a star off my rating.

  • John Anderson

Amazing. Perhaps the best spot in the area. True hidden GEM! Coffee is good, doughnuts great. Pastries and cakes! But what not known as well is their soups and perigees in the back. THE BEST! After I went here the first time I stood outside and directed people to go in. It's that good - and the owner operators are super nice!

  • Eugene

My partner and I were looking at the frozen pierogies and asking about them. All of the sudden, this gentlemen in an apron pops out and declares “they are the best pierogies”. So we got some pork pierogies, and cheese pierogies. We just made them tonight (boiled), and they are very good. We want to try the cabbage rolls next.

  • Sofiia Silchuk

I love the atmosphere in this bakery! It reigns laughter and goodness. This is a place that you want to return to forever! Because when you go to Vlad’s, you get not only good food, good coffee, and some jokes for a good mood. And also so nice that he remembers all his customers and is always very caring. Definitely 5 stars!

  • Deborah pinheiro

Visited this wk and bought donuts which were not too bad. I bought the cabbage roll to try as first time visiting this bakery...was very disappointed the cabbage roll supposedly was with sausage. However got no taste of sausage seems like rice with tomato sauce was rolled inside the cabbage....which was very pathetic.

  • Ghengis Dhad

Wow. What a great place. The staff are personable, competent and efficient. The Baker makes an amazing American and the pastries are amazing. And they aren't just offering sweets. Borscht, pirogi, cabbage rolls the size of a child's head and other items. There should be a lineup. Can't recommend this place enough.

  • Алина Ромашко

I am just crazy about the sorrel soup! I can eat it in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening!!!! It is just madly delicious! I like this place, it is always very clean, the staff is always very friendly, and the food is fresh and different. Everything is very tasty. I can never get past this bakery!

  • Virginia

This Slavic bakery shop is gold! It has a wide variety of baked goodies and pastries. It also offers coffee and speciality drinks. Prices are readable and customer service is great. The inside of the store is clean but not spacious to sit in and I socialize. It also offers frozen baked goodies and food.

  • Önder Hasan KARABULUT

We bought spinach feta cheese burek which was delicious in the morning. After that , we came back to buy some dessert and tried chocolate dipped cannoli and pistachio cheesecake. Cheesecake was ok but cannoli was spoiled and taste was sour. We didn’t expect this due to burek purchase in the morning .

  • T H

Today was my first visit to Vlad's Bakery and I am beyond impressed. Amazing selection of delicious meals and best of all, an assortment of amazing treats. I got at least 5 different types of meringue and I wish I could say there will be some left tomorrow. It's too good. I will definitely be back.

  • Victor Leo

The store looks nice and so do the pastries, but the quality lacks. I bought three different products there. One loaf was a complete waste, dry as a brick and tasteless, it went straight to the garbage. The other two didn't taste great and were also dry, but passable. Won't be coming back.

  • Carolyn Jovanovic

So disappointing! All the pastries look amazing (visually) however, didn’t taste how it looked. We got the apple crumble cheesecake and it was super dry, tasteless, stale and just not appetizing at all. Such a let down! Looked great, but lacked taste in every way, shape and form.

  • Hadi J

The pastries seem fantastic, but some of them are not fresh. We ordered 5 different items, but two of them (Mocha and Napoleon) was stale. Even the cream was sour. I removed two stars for them. I am not sure whether it's a one-time incident or not. But this is my observation.

  • Dragana Jelic

The place was amazing! So elegant and with many different variety. You also have a side table with 50% discount items from previous day. The prices are great. We always get plum donuts and poppyseed pastry and they are big in sizes for only $2.50 each . Love the place. …

Lovely Eastern European-style bakery. Their Polish pączki (donuts) are HUGE and delicious. Reminds me of home. They also offer a hot food table with familiar favourites such as cabbage rolls, pierogi, etc. A great and much-needed addition to the neighbourhood!

  • Masha Antonian

What a lovely little bakery, so many European desserts and treats! The staff/management is very friendly and welcoming and I will definitely be coming back. Would suggest getting the Sorrell soup, tastes as good as I remember as a kid growing up in Russia

  • Laurel K

Never been in before, stopped in on a whim to pick up an apple turnover for breakfast. Was really dry and flaky, not a lot of apple, but whatever. Peeked inside and UM. Tore it in half and confirmed, yep, big chunk of green mold inside. Never going back.

  • Chloe Townsend

Super inviting and friendly staff, very delicious pastries. I bought Dobosh(sponge cake with chocolate mousse and caramel) and a Tiramisu slice and a couple "mini" doughnuts(they are huge!) I am going to come back for the cabbage rolls and soup as well.

First time trying it out and they have everything. Try the puppy seed cake the square one and not the rolls one and you won't be disappointed. I never knew poppy seed can taste this good. Plus it's good for you.

Went there yesterday. 8 crepes for almost $50??? Which gave food poisoning to my family. It was not fresh. The filling was too sour and it’s way too oily. Be careful going there if you don’t want upset stomach

  • Claudia Daniela Nicolescu

We bought several items and while most of them were good and fresh two slices of chocolate cake were stale and started to grow mould!! Reading the prior reviews this does not seem to be an isolated incident!

  • Erin Skrypnyk-Bajor

Large selection, but the pastries that we purchased were dry and tasted stale, almost freezer burned. I DO NOT recommend. So many other wonderful bakeries in the area - go to one of those instead of Vlad's!
