What can I say? I practically grew up at this library so there's a big nostalgia factor. The upgrade a few years back perked it up. I love the shifting hours. This place is open until 9pm three days a week which means I can actually stop by after work. The staff is alway helpful and know their stuff. I'm big on my SFPL online account and getting things on hold and so I can breeze in and out. It's small, but it's convenient and gets the job done. Occasionally I work there for a change of pace, but the middle and high schoolers and frequent this place on weekends and after school make it crowded and louder than I handle. Some shady characters frequent this library branch, but that comes with the territory.
A smaller but cozy library, where people are always warm and extra helpful, very similar to those at the Parkside Branch, although Parkside can at times be a little noisy, due to its patrons. Selection is smaller at West Portal, but as it is near an elementary school, its patrons tend to be younger than those at Parkside, which is near a high school. Nonetheless, both branches have excellent staff that often go the extra mile to help you find what you need. Highly recommended. Please do note that seating is fairly limited at this branch, due to its physical dimension, while it would be difficult to not be able to find a seat at Parkside, but depending on your party size, both are great places to vist.
This is a super, pretty, neighborhood library. Stop by and you find colorful stenciled beamed ceilings and more. I really enjoy interfacing with the staff. Most of the faces are familiar and they always make it a pleasant experience to locate books, cd's, etc.. They also offer help, working to help me navigate the sometimes arduous SFPL system and order from downtown. Did I mention their special crafts evenings? Lots of crabby ladies (like me) learning to repurpose scraps from young enthusiastic staffers. Great job, Librarians and thank you for serving the West of Twin Peaks crowd!
With ebooks, less funding, public libraries have fallen on sad times. They have a shelf here that says new books, but they don't get the latest books available. They have a self check out station which is pretty quick and easy to use. It also prints out a reminder receipt to tell you when the book is due. The best part of this library is when you walk through the front door, the kids section is on the right hand side of the entry and the adults is on the left. The book drop is at the side so you don't have to walk up the stairs, you can do a curve side drop off.
Why not just find a cold bench in a windy park and read? Because that's exactly what it feels like at the West Portal branch. This place is arctic-cold in Winter. It's not as uptight and creepy-gamey like Parkside library, although what it lacks in unreasonable discipline it makes up for in crazy patrons. On certain days, you'll feel like you're in a cramped, insane asylum. Forget about being able to focus in here with the constant clanging of the BART rail right next store. Awful and tortuous.
Another fine ole building that houses one of San Francisco finest treasures: BOOKS. Yes, some still love books. But, here is a surprise for you all: THE LIBRARY HOUSES MAGAZINES, NEWSPAPERS, VIDEOS, AND OTHER things. I love how helpful the staff are. They helped me without the batting of an eye lash. Give our libraries a try. The are free and, if you don't already have one, the library cards are free also. If you are visiting, check out San Francisco's true gold reserves.
I have great memories going to West Portal library! I was in Kindergarten up the street and the teacher walked us down in single file. There was a librarian who had a project or books that she read to us. West Portal feels like a small town with friendly people. The library closed a few years ago for major changes, but it looks just as I remember as a kid. A big shout out to all the staff ♡♡♡
One of my favourite places to study. WiFi and power outlets for laptops. Classic architecture and styling which matches the village atmosphere of West Portal. Close to muni transportation links and cafes.
picturesque neighborhood library/community spot conveniently located next to playground, muni, and west portal business corridor. friendly staff offering sfpl to go during covid transition times
Great little nook for reading and finding books to check out. There is free wifi and self check out stations. Only bad thing is it's hard to find parking right next to it. Otherwise it's great!
The staff and librarians here and so friendly and extremely helpful! I love the classes they offer in the evenings. They also have a great selection of books, audiobooks, and movies!
Many a day, our kids were at this lovely little library. They started off by going to the kids section and became very big fans of the library In grammar school they studied there
SF. West Portal Library has new hours. Parking at West Portal is a challenge. The best way to arrive is using an SFMTA LRV (K-L-M).
Lovely building with a super cute vibe. Much smaller collection than most locations so pick your holds and get them delivered
Has recently reopened. The new hours are Tue - Sat 10:00 - 5:30. No access into the library, books are picked up outside.
Nice neighborhood library. I like to work/study at the tables here. The children's room is cozy and well-stocked.
Average library. However, it has free wifi - no library card needed. 24 hours!
Old fashioned library with library feel and vibe to it. I love it!
