I came to West Portal Family Dentistry on last minute appointment to have a regular cleaning before switching to new insurance. Julie was extremely helpful and accommodating from the moment I called, unfortunately, things definitely took a turn for the worst from there. Dr. Laura informed me that I had 4 fillings and should have a deep cleaning-- which cannot be done in a single day due to insurance reasons and the procedure is just too much to handle in one day. I opted to start with one side and to come back later for the other. I was told that my insurance coverage is as good as it gets, so I should really try to squeeze the most out of it. With that, I made the stupid decision to come back the following day for the rest of the deep cleaning and SOME of the filling. I should've known better since half of the procedure was already so much to handle. The next day, I told Dr. Laura, Julie and the dental assistant multiple times that I didn't think I could handle 4 fillings and the deep cleaning, but they all told me that I might as well do it all at once since I was already numb and proceeded to continue with the 4 fillings. After about an hour at the office and multiple breaks, I even told them that my jaw was starting to lock and their response was to use an ice pack on it. When the other doctor came in to take over for Dr. Laura, she was extremely rough and caused a lot of pain. The final straw was when she was cleaning my permanent retainer in an area that was not numb at all-- I told her that I really couldn't handle it anymore. Her response was to slam down her tools and tell me rudely that it was up to me. Yes, it is absolutely up to me-- why wouldn't it be? I ended up walking out of the office in tears because I was overwhelmed by all the work done the my teeth over the course of two days and the unprofessional hostile patient care I was given by the 2nd doctor. Dr. Laura ended up calling me later that evening and even left me her cell phone number just in case-- so the single star is for Dr. Laura and Julie. I felt like I was pushed to do certain procedures all at once even though it really should've taken place over multiple visits. The staff kept telling me that I had great coverage and it was in my benefit to use it even though I was going to have new coverage in a month. I felt like I was taken advantage of and I would never go back again. My experience was a nightmare that not even Julie or Dr. Laura could salvage.

West Portal Family Dentistry has provided me with exceptional care. I had a lot of dental problems & needed a lot of attention. They knew I was struggling with some health issues & they were very patience, always supported me, & they waited until I recovered from my illness before they worked on my teethes. Dr. Nguyen & Dr. Laura went above & beyond to help me restored many of my missing teethes with implants & bridges. Because of their efforts, my dental problems has greatly improved & I am able to enjoy eating again. I am sure to recommend you to my friends & families in the future. I wanted to express how much the fact that your entire group have cared for my dental problems. You were very understanding & were ready to help meet my needs. I am happy to recommend you to my families & friends. I’ve been coming here for only a few months & I have received wonderful service. Thank you for extending such kindness, consideration & support. I am seeing improvements to my dental problems. You can be sure that I would recommend your establishment to friends & family. I especially appreciated your honesty about replacing my implant for my front tooth. (We talked about this on 5/7/19). Although it is not easy to accept bad news, you do far more service by communicating the facts honestly than if you were to pleasantly avoid the real issue. SHE GAVE YOU HER CELL PHONE NUMBER BECAUSE SHE WAS AFRAID OF A LAWSUIT. THE SECOND DENTIST WAS ENTIRELY TOO ROUGH ON YOU. I HOPE SHE DIDN'T DAMAGE YOUR TEETH. A COMPLETE CLEANING SHOULD NEVER BE DONE IN ONE DAY. MOST DENTISTS DO QUADS, (4) INDIVIDUAL TEETH CLEANING APPOINTMENTS SPREAD OUT SO THE PATIENT HAS TIME TO HEAL, BECAUSE DEEP CLEANING LEAVES SORE GUMS. RINSING WITH WARM SALT WATER HELPS PAIN. ALWAYS ASK YOUR DENTIST FIRST !!!! A DEEP CLEANING MIGHT COME WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO GET PERIO-MED. A SPECIAL RINSE THAT'S PRESCRIBED AFTER A DEEP CLEANING. GOOGLE PERIO-MED, READ THE PROS AND CONS. I WENT TO WEST PORTAL DENTISTRY YEARS AGO, ACROSS THE STREET FROM MACATEER HIGH SCHOOL. EXCUSE MISSPELLING. THERE WERE TWO FEMALE DENTISTS, I THINK RUSSIAN AND MIDDLE EASTERN. THE MIDDLE EASTERN DENTIST DID TOO MANY ROOT CANALS AND PUT ON CAPS. THE CAPS EVENTUALLY FALL OFF AND YOU'RE LEFT WITH NO TEETH TO CHEW WITH. SHE'S A MONEY-MAKER AND IF SHE COULD SHE'D REMOVE ALL YOUR TEETH. IF I WERE YOUNGER I'D SUE HER FOR DENTAL MALPRACTICE. NOWADAYS DENTISTS SAVE TEETH. LOOK FOR DENTISTS WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY/EQUIPMENT. MY ADVICE > DON'T GO THERE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE 50 AND OLDER. SHE HAD A NOSEY OBNOXIOUS FRONT DESK RECEPTIONIST. SHE SHOULD BE GONE BY NOW.

I’ve been going to West Portal Family Dentistry for over 14 years. I found them when I lived in SF proper and now, even though I live in Alameda, I still make the trek all the way to West Portal for my dentistry needs. Dr. Terry and Dr. Laura are not only very skilled, they are extremely patient and will take the time to answer any questions and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. I do not enjoy going to the dentist but I have to admit they have made what they can a pleasurable experience. My favorite part of the visit is chatting with Julie, the receptionist. She knows EVERYTHING and goes out of her way to accommodate just about any request dealing with insurance, surgery referrals, to life in general. I know I can reach out to her any time. She, and they, are like a little family and make me feel a part of it. I highly recommend West Portal Family Dentistry.

Proficient, understanding and professional. The staff at this clinic are extremely knowledgeable and delightful to work with. The paperwork is electronic and a breeze before you even get there. Even though I had an entourage with my daughter, stroller, husband and service dog clogging up the office, everyone was compassionate and helpful as if they had all the patience in the world for me. My problems were diagnosed quickly, efficiently, and without excessive pain (something I wasn’t sure was possible after some previous terrible experiences at a different clinic). A solution was drawn up and referrals written before the hour was up. I would say, “incredible service,” but it’s more like, “fantastic relationship.” They’re so personable and receptive that it makes you feel like you should be there.

I LOVE Dr. Laura, and that’s a huge understatement. She has taken amazing care of our family for the last 3 years, and we were converted to being lifelong patients at the very first visit. We trust her clinical skills and judgement implicitly. We’re a family of health care professionals and understand the power of rapport in health and wellness. She’s got this perfect balance of warmth and kindness with stellar professional and procedural skills. She takes the time to explain clinical findings and preventative measure to help maintain health teeth and gums. My root canal/crown experience was seamless and comfortable! Dr. Laura is a true gem and we’re grateful for her wonderful care and expertise.

Dr. Nguyen did an excellent job cleaning my teeth. In addition, she really does everything she can to meet her customer needs. I was in a rush to leave in order to go to another event. There were some technical issues with the x-ray that took additional time(figured it would happen on a day I’m rushing). She completely adjusted and adjusted her tasks. She would normally hand off the actual cleaning to her assistants but she completed it herself in order to help me keep my schedule. I can only give her my sincerest thank you and utmost respect for what she does.

West Portal Family Dentistry is amazing! I normally hate going to the dentist but ALL the staff here are incredibly helpful, kind, and aware. Julie at the front desk is such a pleasure to interact with. Dr. Nguyen is always willing to explain what is going on in my mouth without any inkling of annoyance which I really appreciate. As much as I don't like going to the dentist in general, I always leave here feeling good. Thank you to the whole West Portal Family Dentistry team!

My 11-year old daughter just had her routine cleaning and check today. I have to say, the whole experience from scheduling to arrival and leaving is perfectly seamless and pleasant, even with all the comprehensive COVID precaution and check. It's service with a smile and the doctor was really nice and gentle. I absolutely recommend this practice to anyone. My whole family goes there and we even drive from the peninsula Los Altos area.

I’v been coming to this office for over 5 years and I highly recommend them. Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Huynh (aka Dr. Laura) are genuine professionals. They truly care about your health and are so skilled at delivering optimal results. The staff are friendly and helpful. The office is modern and clean. Overall, a well rounded dental office right on West Portal near the MUNI tunnel. Go there, you won’t regret it.

West Portal is the best dentist I have ever been to. I came to them in pain needing urgent care. I was given an appointment and taken care of like I was family. I had alot of work done in a a short time. Not once was I made to feel bad about my dental care. I could go on and on about how amazing EVERYONE is. Sadly I have moved from San Francisco I wish I could take West Portal Dental with me!!!

This dentist is a CRIMINAL. She told me that my son needed 1800.00 in ROOT PLANING and that he had two cavities. The only reason that I knew that he did not need root planing is that I was a dental assistant in my early life. This dentist was WILLING to drill TWO holes in my son's teeth and fill cavities that did not exist. WOW!!! Why are people like this not doing TIME in the County Jail.

As always Dr. Laura was personable and professional. She let me know exactly what she was doing before she did it and made sure to tell me to stop her if I felt discomfort. My filling was done before I knew it! My daughter and I have been patients for years and I would highly recommend West portal Family Dentistry. Dr. Terri , Dr. Laura and the whole staff are great !

I have regularly visited dentists all my life, but have never had dentists as wonderful and caring as those at West Portal. I can't say you ever look forward to visits to dentists, but when you're lucky you find people like these who make those visits far less painful and almost enjoyable (almost).

Friendly, professional, and patient. Fantastic service any time I've been there. They even squeezed me in for an emergency visit on a Saturday after my years-old veneer from my front tooth broke off, what an absolute lifesaver that was. Julie is the sweetest lady on Earth, what a gem.

Dr. Nguyen is very professional, kind, and thorough. Showed up late to an appointment, and they still saw me and gave me a thorough cleaning and checkup. May was great about cleaning my teeth, and Julie kindly updated my paperwork and scheduled my next appointment at the front desk.

They have worked diligently to overcome years of benign but real neglect by my former dentist. And so far they have been very successful. I would heartily recommend them. And today, a Saturday, they made a special trip to take care of my emergency tooth problem. More thanks.

I have gone to West Portal Dentistry for about 20 years because they do a wonderful job of saving my teeth. Because I have Torie (bones under my tongue) they create problems the Dr. Ngyuen solves with work-arounds.

If I could give them six stars I would! The dentists are phenomenal and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. When I'm there I feel like I'm visiting with friends, everyone is so kind and fun.
