We first as part of tour and then again on our own. It is located just on the outer edge of Chengdu. It was about 17 km from where we were staying. We found the tour we took too short to see everything eventhough we were there for almost 3 hours. Expect a lot of your time to be spent waiting in ques even on rainy days. Both days we arrived before 7:30 am. The Ticket window opens at that time. The lines move fast and you also get a 50% off the ticket price if you are over 60 years old. Expect to do a lot of walking and there is a lot of hills. There are also a lot of ques but the park keeps them moving fairly well. We went in July 2018, and they had approximately 134 pandas. Don't expect to see all of them. The number of pandas available as we learned does change. We were lucky to see pandas from 6 weeks old to 4 years old. They are AMAZING and fun to watch. The park is large so you are able to get away from the crowds. If you Love Pandas this is the place to visit and expect to spend more than 5 hours exploring and just watching Pandas. There are also Red Pandas (but they are not as much fun to watch). The Park provides a lot of great information in both Chinese and English explaining how care for all the Pandas. There are cafes and places to eat in the Park. If you catch a taxi like we did expect to have to negotiate with the taxis unless you know the bus system. Most of the taxi drivers speak some English.
Located in the grounds of what was once a classic zoo the research center has repurposed all the animal enclosures for the housing of a single species, the Giant Panda. Actually this is not quite true as you will find a number of areas housing the very cute Red Panda. The expansive grounds of the research center are beautifully landscaped with more formal gardens gradually merging to native forest areas. Dotted throughout the grounds the various panda enclosures provide, what appears to my untrained eyes at least, an excellent environment for the animals. The keepers have selected large heavily forested and private enclosures for those Panda that are shy of people or other panda. Those animals that have been raised in captivity or are relaxed amongst other Panda are housed in an environment that looks to provide a stimulating and happy place to live. The animals appear to play and and interact with each other well as well as showing a significant interest in the goings on of the keepers in the lead up to breakfast time!! A thoroughly rewarding experience at a truly world class location. P.S. try to plan your visit so you get there at opening time. The enclosures get cleaned, the Panda get fed first thing so are most active at this time. Later in the day, panda do what panda do best, sleeping.
Go really early, 730am to be exact (that's the time they open) to avoid the crowds. Once inside, buy your tickets for the tramp and it'll send you the the first base camp, which is all the way at the end. Visit the enclosures, where you'll be greeted by baby pandas and walk towards the open area where they release the pandas into the open at 9am. Grab yourself a good spot and snap a few and move on. From there, you can take a nice stroll around the other bases and go towards the red panda enclosure. You should be done by 1230. When all the crowd starts coming in, you'll be comfortably walking out. Head to the city from there through a shuttle bus which cost only 2 yuan. It's good to see China preserving and helping pandas to become less of an endangered species.
Generally the place is nice, but it would be better to go on a week day. On Sunday there are just too many people. The pandas are big and fat, usually asleep. They look quite dirty. There is a chance to see the babies, but prepare to wait a long line. The whole park is located on a hillside, so your whole trip will be constantly going up and down. The bamboo and the views are splendid, the cages of the pandas not so. I would say they are a bit small and kind of dirty... Anyway, nice place, but I expected a bit more. Btw. There is a gift shop to buy postcards and stamps and souvenirs. Behind it you can put a fun panda stamp on the letter.

Bene ma non benissimo. Sti panda vivono dentro a recinti di cemento, con catapecchie in prefabbricato mezze diroccate come rifugio. Sembra di essere in Jurassic Park II. Comunque i panda sono proprio dei marmelloni, fanno ridere solo a vederli... no wonder tbey were going extinted..
The panda research base was really beautiful with nature and greenery everywhere. Saw many pandas and red pandas too. However I was expecting to see baby pandas nursing etc but didn't find anything like that. The walk was toooo long and tiring but finally got to see so many pandas in real life Alhamdulillah
Fantastically designed and managed panda zoo. A must do if you get to Chengdu. Pandas are lively, playful and active plus there is plenty of them to see. Perfect day trip for all the family. Get there early as the pandas prefer mornings, apparently.
Great panda viewing experience. We got to hear a panda talk and panda had a bath. Suggest walking the entire base as it's not that far to walk. Someone mentioned it's best to go during winter or cold weather as the pandas don't really come…...
I LOVE PANDAS! arrived early at 0700 via didi for 47¥ from tianfu square area. there was already a queue for the entry and tickets; entry fee 55¥. walked directly to the sunshine nursery first and worked way back to the entry. the walk was…...
I visited this Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda at the beginning of Jan 2019. The place is really nice. If you stay within three rings of Chengdu city, you can just travel there on your own and do not need to book a tour. It’s like 30…...
I am usually not a big fan of this sort of parks. I went there while in Chengdu and I must admit that it was a great experience. The animal have a lot of space and are not forced to show up, or kept awake. Go in the early morning as the…...
Very well made, zoo-like layout with plenty of space for the Pandas to roam and play outside. Good signage in Chinese and English. Some if the indoor pens are a bit small. Can get very crowded. Museum has a lot of interesting information.
Panda panda panda! Come early on a weekday to enjoy some alone time with the adorable pandas. Their habitats are very green with ample room for them to laze around (not like a zoo), that makes me a happy panda. You can also see many…...
We've learn a lot about Pandas ❤. The breeding process for conservation of the giant panda specie, and how they grow in captivity to later be released into their natural habitat kids will love it, very fun and educational.…...
Arrived around 10 and saw a few of the pandas eating bamboo and rolling about. A few others asleep high in the trees. Value for money is good, it's a beautiful park. Can be a bit congested with other tourists. Worth it!
This is one of the best experience i've ever had. I was not expecting anything and it surprise me a lot. How clean is the place, well communicate it, organized, the work that they are doing with Pandas breeding.…...
Nice place to see the pandas. The area is huge so take into account enough time. There are pandas in all sizes. Even the red panda can be found. If you have some free time in Chengdu this is the place to go :-)
This palace was absolutely amazing. The pandas were definitely well looked after! There are some beautiful gardens to walk around too, also a cash point just outside the entrance which was handy.
Must visit when you are in China. Easy to get to on public bus or taxi is very cheap. Walk a lot but see a lot of cute pandas including the red panda and interesting birds.
A wonderful place to see and learn about Pandas. If your American don't be bashful about pushing your way up front to get a photo or your never gonna get up close.
Panda paradise! Plenty panda to see around. Do t worry if you dont reach in time early morning, still some activity and funny panda action all around the park.
Great reserve for the panda. Stroll through Km of park watching from the young to older Pandas. Try and get there early as it gets busy after lunch.
Go early and on a COLD weekday. The pandas will be more active No need to pay for the transportation inside the park. The park is small.
Very nice Panda sanctuary and well built. Ticket prices are fair at $55 for adults. Worth the one hour ride from city centre
Well worth it one of the very few places where you can see pandas of all ages and up close. Key is to get there early
This is a place where Chinese government doing R&D on pandas, huge areas for visitors to come and understand pandas.
Mix between Disneyland and Jurassic Park for pandas. A must see. Almost nobody can ignore how cute this pandas are.
Great place. Best time to come in the morning while the pandas are being fed. They usually sleep in the afternoon
Exciting to see real pandas, a lot of walking involved, but the visit will be with me the rest of my life.
Very nice place to observe dozens of giant pandas and red pandas. Great activity for families and kids
Excellent experience. Don't do the scenic shuttle bus you miss too much. Were in our 60s and we walked
Leuk maar niet heel bijzonder. Relatief weinig Panda's t.o.v. Chinezen die er massaal aanwezig zijn.
Good place to visit.. to see real Panda..Baby panda super cute.. They have very good take care here
