"Interesting architecture like some residential homes in Japan"
"I haven't visited the place in years so I'm not too sure if it's the effect of covid but 27 Boxes has turned into a "ghost town""
27 boxes had so much potential but just never stuck the landing. Intended to be a place that offerered unique and potentially handmade goods in a quirky setting it just didn't have a mix that drew shoppers. I don't think people went back after a first visit and so it's ever quiet and stores close often. On our visit there was also a beggar at the front entrance which isn't pleasant and security couldn't be bothered to tell the guy to move on. We went to Denzel and Jo gallery because an artist I follow had a recent exhibition there. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't have ever felt like I was missing potentially exquisite fare by staying away. 27 boxes needs a relaunch.
Great concept of stacking steel containers on top of one another and creating a mini mall. Undercover parking off the street is good. Toilets are clean. Nice playground and outdoor area for kids. Even have a small nursery outside with plants for sale. Only problem is some shops are now occupied and remaining shops sell odds and ends nothing of real interest bar Microgram Records which has great selection of CDs DVDs and LPs. Bill Craig men's clothing will also be opening soon which has moved from main Road Melville.I see there they are do alterations upstairs looks like new stores. Hope the can put of life back into this place.
Loved this eclectic spot with interesting, local clothes and eateries. The shops are made from 27 container boxes. The playarea was a blast with the kids as it was so different (in a good way!). Love the experience here with safe underground parking. Felt quite at home and visited the plant nursery to buy a succulent. A beautiful display of succulents completes the ambience. It was vibes but not too busy (even with a children's party going on at the cake shop). Definitely a place to come and watch the world go by and enjoy a snack. 27 boxes is found on an upmarket road tucked into the neighbourhood.
Interesting architecture like some residential homes in Japan. It has a lot of room to move around and their toilets are okay. It's right in the heart of Melville just behind the popular seventh street, so after shopping around for plants, jewellery, designer clothes and getting your hair and nails done, you can pop into one of the many restaurants and pubs on 7th. It's a chilled spot. Definitely worth exploring. Also, there's a nursery there and a mini park for kids to play while the adults shop and eat.
I haven't visited the place in years so I'm not too sure if it's the effect of covid but 27 Boxes has turned into a "ghost town". There are still a few shops that are open for business but the centre itself lacks life. It's pretty sad to experience to experience because the last time I was there it was very vibrant and colorful. It seems to be maintained to a certain extent but certain areas of the centre seems to not be getting the attention that it deserves like the small park next to the playground.
Trendy with various shops and restaurants on offer - a place where you can take a stroll and enjoy time browsing the shops or have a cup of coffee. Shops offer unique products, like the baker with artisan bread or fashion. There's a lovely outside play area for children while parents can sit down and enjoy something to eat or drink. Various restaurants offer something for various tastes - from grilled food, to upmarket coffee shops and more. Look out for the evening shopping events at 27 Boxes
It is a pity that 27 Boxes has been going downhill over the past couple of years. Previously it was a trendy, vibey, arty, and fun place to shop and hang out. But in recent years it has become a dirty, unkept place that is often not very safe. Car guards are a huge problem. There are a lot of empty spaces in the centre. There are much better and safer places in Joburg to visit and experience a wonderful vibey, fun and arty atmosphere. I would not recommend this place at all.
Visited a new food store at this mall, and it was an amazing experience. The places name is Munch o holics a new store run by a young, fiery couple. Fav thing there so far...their breakfast wrap is a whole day thang. Overall though the mall itself is a unique shopping experience. But careful of the street crime though...park undercover than in the street and watch out for little chance takers who walk by trying to snatch your phone from your hand
The place needs life again. The restaurants here are still super, but for the shopping experience.... Shew. You need something like a yoga studio here, a Refillery, plus a pharmacy, and a larger grocer for basics! Speciality stores are for interest and variety, but they cannot be the anchors for a mall.... An alcohol speciality store and a tea speciality store would also not be amiss here. This place desperately needs more foot traffic.
I went to 27 boxes for the first time yesterday. It was quite a dissapointment to see how empty the centre was. A lit of shops are empty and the shops that are open has got no clients. I went looking for an ATM and there was only one and I never even heard of that brand of ATM before. I probably won't visit 27 boxes again unless i really have to. The only positive thing i can say is that the kids play area is not too bad.
OKAY... I wouldn’t recommend someone to take a drive there but if you’re in the area you can pop in. It’s vintage, unique with a touch of hippie. The live artist and bubbles bar was a sweet touch in the centre of it all. There’s many boxes empty and those that have visitors are mostly restaurants. The concept is rare but the offerings limited. The outside area is lovely for kids however it’s also the smoking area.
A friend long suggested that I visit this place so I decided to take some time off from my busy schedule to give it a try, I was very happy, it is clean and was not overcrowded, empty to be exact. It has the Melville feel to it. If you love some art, fashion, food and gardening, this is a place to go. Unfortunately I didn't take pictures, was gonna share.
Very interesting place but very gimmicky. Gets boring after the second time. Many stores closes down because they sell trinkets and there's not enough feet walking through. Nice under ground parking though if you're ever in melville (It's free for the first hour too). There is also quite a nice food market on Wednesday evenings on the roof.
I love this place, ingeniously made up out of shipping containers. Some of the shops are permanent, but there are many pop-up shops as well. There are places to eat here, as well as niche clothing and decor shops. They have an open-air space where they have live music from time to time. Excellent place to bring tourists.
Visiting for the first time, I could definitely see why it was so popular in it's hey days, sadly like much of central Jozi, it is now a shadow of its former self. Most of the 'boxes' are empty, but the ones that remain are definitely worth a visit. We had a quick jaunt to see an exhibition by a local artist and friend.
Love the fact that's it totally in support of locally made items. Has a distinct uniqueness to it in comparison to other local markets .. however I wonder will it last long term . We asked around as we were much curious and most of the shop keepers reckon it's rather quiet most days. I hope it lasts I quite like it .
One of my favourite places in the whole world. Enjoy a good cup of coffee and a true Belgian Waffle at Yummyness whilst the kids play their hearts out in Castle Playground, or feast on the delicious freshly baked croissants of Bake Brothers, or whatever tickles your fancy at a number of wonderful unique shops.
A great place for hanging out by yourself or friends. There are a lot of places to visit within the compound. They sometimes also offer poetry nights (well, performance arts, to be precise). There are vendors who also sell sick jewellery . It's definitely worth checking out if you're around the area.
Love this place! So quaint and reminiscent of Melville in its hay day... Home to 2 important people - Melissa at P4 Infinity Salon and Palesa at Prim and Proper for Lashes and brows! They also have a variety of clothing, food and book stores. Definately worth a visit, safe and clean! …
Great spot for families and dates. We love Reserved Cafe, Yummyness and the No Name Nursery. Coffee is great at both spots! Reserved has some really good meal options too, and a good selection of teas. Give the other spots in Melville a break and support these incredible businesses.
A great idea using containers for the shops and it is beautiful. Lovely variety of shops and Pierced by Zulu is a talented piercer. He works out of Hub on the ground floor near the stairs. Hub ladies are super friendly and customer oriented, they have wonderful products. Thanks guys
Went to the Chinese restaurant, Chopstix. Amazing food from the owner and his 3 staff members. The food is authentic, fresh and tastes great. You must order the dumplings, Sui mai, har gow and magic pockets. The tea is served like no other Chinese restaurant. It is an experience.
I had quite the experience here, the place is quite cute and I just love the vibe of a mini market it gives. Expand your Taste horizon and get some of the best recipes here, you can feel that everything is done with Love. Everyone is friendly and I am definitely going to go back.
Nice atmosphere and the shops in the containers are individual shops, no chain stores. The project has a lot potential in my view, but needs more people to visit the location. Certain areas need maintenance and attention. You definitely feel the African wipe of entrepreneurship.
The place has great potential however most of the stores are sadly vacant. It is better to go during one of the night markets (Wednesday nights) as it is busier and more to see and browse as opposed to other times. Some unique stores with local wares and some good places to eat.
The shops are definitely trying- they have unique selling points- without being pricey. But at the moment it feels a little empty. If it were to fill up (again), the space would be more vibrant. Love the patch of lawn with the playground. Makes it a friendly, inclusive enclave.
It's an amazing area to relax. There are art galleries, designer clothing stores, eating and drinking areas. It has a great vibe and you can bring your children with because there's an area where they are taken care. I especially love the curry place. The food is amazing.
Really cute and quiet, the place has a lot of hidden gems that one can discover and enjoy. However, as a student who is barely making it through the month I have to comment on the price range which is quite steep. Feel free to browse through the eclectic style vibe …
I was visiting a unit in the shopping centre early morning and it's pretty much deserted with most shops shuttered before 10 a.m. like most of Melville 4th avenue. Has underground parking but a little tight to maneuver I should think, unless it is empty, which it was.
Cold, dismal, no life. Yet, surprisingly, there are some great restaurants and coffe places, alongside other shops. But, to go there is a little disheartening as , it seems, the managing agents of this center have let 27 boxes decline and degrade and fade away...
First time visiting and I was disappointed to see that many of the stores have closed. Some of the remaining stores are over priced. there is a lovely play park for kids but unfortunately not many people or kids around. I didn't end up staying long.
Very nice place to get gifts and if you are into markets I suggest visiting on Sundays when most stalls and shops are open. Well maintained and clean space. Loved the go green concept with the greenery outside. Great security presence as well.
27Boxes is a great concept but unfortunately the mall is not what it used to be. There are more empty shops and very few feet are walking through the mall. This place could be great. Park inside (underground) as parking is limited outside.
Unique place visit on a weekend. Have some good food and a wide variety of meals. Could order anything from breakfasts, burgers, wings to something more filling as well. Most of the places take cash and card as well. Friendly waiters too.
Be aware of your car tow bar cover stolen in the underground parking and reported to management no response. Seems like security is relaxed . Never had an issue felt like it's the safest space to park in Mellville before but not anymore
We drove through thinking we have always wanted to go, byt never had a chance. Almost all the shops are vacant and nothing going on. One or 2 open eateries. Walked in, and walked out. Covid and lockdown probably took it's toll...
Nice play area for kids but watch out for sand pit. Locals say the cats use it as a litter box. New Kids spa looks nice. A lot of vacant spaces. May have been a nice place once upon a time. Try a cronut, it's good though pricey
I am loving the concept.. a one stop for a huge variety of shops. Definitely want to visit on a market night and experience the full ambiance. As it was quiet on a Saturday afternoon. The Cronuts at XO Cronuts was very tasty
I will give a 5 star to : "P4 Infinity Hair and Beauty" Melissa and staff are very friendly, helpful, ever with loadshedding and NO water. The other shops I'm not to familiar with. The bathrooms and center are always clean.
I was very disaapointed by the Falsely advertised Halloween Event, we drove there from quite far away to find almost decorations and just one or 2 stalls offering a handfull of sweets each. Kids were very dissapointed.
Not as it ised to be, Covid has affected it but there are some lovely restaurants inside and a few great shops. If you looking for something different then this is the place. Nice childrens play area.
Great place for fashion, gifts, and eats. I bought a super cute dress and had the chance to chat with the artist who had made it. Really great place to wander, get inspired, and meet great creatives.
Very nice place, liked that it wasn't jam packed and the music was there but not so loud you cant herr yourself think. The food is very good too..it has a really nice vibe...will definitely come back
Sad to see that the place has very little stores open. Starting to have an abandoned feel. There are some cool restaurants on the out side with kids play area. Hope they get more stores in here
All shops are almost never open at the same time. Love the space though. I feel like there could be more gourmet food spots for this awesome space. Furthermore, I absolutely love the nursery.
Beautiful, vibey and unique best describes both 27 Boxes and the people who make up this amazing place. The Wasala Market is an awesome experience and is a great family friendly day out.
A concept custom made shop boxes, sounds exciting ?so the place is ! Variety of stuff like art, food joints and micogram-the music shop.Micogram shifted recently from bright waters.
Great vibe. Visit every Tuesday for cappuccino @reservedcafe mmmmm and then on air on @brandlive.co.za for #WITEE. You must visit Bohemian Melville!!! 10* @27BoxesMelville rocks!
Many artisanal stores are to be found here. Good coffee, good food and just a wonderment of interesting things. The building structure itself is made out of containers.
My all-time favorite! Like the idea of pop up stores as surprise and getting to know new stuff and he long-term-tenants As well. Lovely outdoor area. Safe parking.
Amazing place!!! South Africans are incredibly creative and inspiring. This place oozes creativity... definitely one to put on the "Places To See" list.
Great artisanal food and local designer shopping. Live music On Saturdays and cosy nihht market in the summer. Great place for tourists and locals.
This is a cool place to hangout, explore good food and enjoy some nice company. It's also safe to park you car as there is an underground parking
Responsible for providing residents and visitors an amazing public resource, 27Boxes offers a great venue to spend time at in awesome Melville.
Went on a Friday. Thought it would be busy but it wasn't. Chilled. The piercing place I went to was also just chilled. A quick in and out.
I love the concept that has been used to construct this place. There is a selection of stores, food and also there is a night Market.
The virtual reality shop at 27 boxes is awesome I love the shipping container complex concept very innovative and hreat architecture
Cool and hipster, but not enough shops open yet. Once there are more shops, it will be poppin and awesome! Until then, 3 stars.
Great place. Great atmosphere. Great ideas. Great individuals. Perfect for a family outing on weekends. It has a 'market feel'.
Love this unique shopping spot made of shopping containers. A mix of local crafts, clothes, bags, books, and a lot of food.
We need a whole lot more happening in this space. It feels a little like a ghost town. The space has to be used better.
Sad. Counted at least 4 used syringes outside on the walkway. Will never be back unfortunately as its a great idea.
Countess has excellent food at excellent price, value for money is insane.Drinks are well priced and vibe is great
Awesome place to hang out. Just feel if it's packed, we just need more chairs but the vibe and the people …
Wow, what a new adventure, love seeing all the entrepreneurship and eager young people living a positive life.
Interesting design...but I loved the plus size shop Leebix and the African clothes store same floor as Leebix
Great funky place to go and visit on a weekend for a spot of vintage clothes shopping and a leisurely lunch
Varied stalls. Unique merchandise. Lots of proudly South African good. Well worth a visit. Safe parking.
Really cool place completely made of cargo containers. Very cool and trendy. Has a nice open playground.
Love 27 Boxes! Great restaurants and super cool boutique clothing stores. Outdoor play area for kids
Enjoyed the experience. I am busy with a concept different from this but received allot of ideas.
Really enjoyed our visit to 27 Boxes, lots of small shops, great food and awesome atmosphere.
Interesting, many Entrepreneur shops, however needs some attention to get more people there.
Had to park underground but visit to small coffee bar, Tilt across the road was friendly.
It's got some jems. It's a bit of a strange layout tho. And parking can be a bit tricky
Expected more. Had it not been setup for Halloween I would find it a bit boring there.
Not a lot of shop open anymore and no feeling of entertainment left there.
Great place if you're looking to star a small business busy place
The place is a cute place for restaurants and thrift shops etc
What a lovely place ,just wished more shops were open
Most stalls/ shops were closed
