The first passenger train departed from Adelaide station on 19 April 1856, carrying the Governor of South Australia and various dignitaries to a celebratory lunch at Port Adelaide. ... The next line into the station was built by the Holdfast Bay Railway Company and opened on 24 May 1880. Adelaide railway station is the central terminus of the Adelaide Metro railway system. All lines approach the station from the west, and it is a terminal station with no through lines, with most of the traffic on the metropolitan network either departing or terminating here. It has nine platforms, all using broad gauge track. It is located on the north side of North Terrace, west of Parliament House. The Adelaide Casino occupies part of the building that is no longer required for railway use. Until 1984, Adelaide station was also the terminus for regional and interstate passenger trains, but there are no longer any regular regional train services in South Australia, and all interstate services are now handled at Adelaide Parklands Terminal. TransAdelaide's main railcar depot was located just outside the station at North Terrace. In 2008 it was announced that the depot would be moved to a new site at Dry Creek, freeing up the Adelaide site for the new Royal Adelaide Hospital. The Dry Creek depot opened in February 2011, and the City depot closed soon after. In January 2013, the station closed for a month-long shutdown in connection with the rail electrification of the Adelaide Metro network. A set of escalators was recently added to the southern entrance of the railway station and the adjoining staircase was refurbished, enabling the station to handle larger numbers of people.

Review for all of Adelaide Metro, not just this station. Trains are often crowded and lack security at the more 'dangerous' times. Staff are happy to check tickets on carriages full of office workers or senior citizens, but mysteriously change carriages or are not even onboard the riskier routes where people are drinking, smoking or damaging property. Trains are often delayed by at least 5 minutes and in some cases they are cancelled with no explanation. Waited about an hour longer than normal since my service was cancelled (no warning given at platform or on their website) and the next service was delayed by 10 minutes. The train that eventually arrived was crowded since it was carrying 2.5 trains worth of passengers. The carriage was also without any power, so no A/C; it was a 40 degree day, thanks for making me late and sweaty for work. Adelaide Metro then has the audacity to expect you to pay full price for this "service", which at the best times is overpriced compared to other cities or countries' metro systems. This is without even mentioning the bus services...

Absolutely disgusted with the so called cleaning regime during this time of Covid 19. A friend and I were waiting for the 12.38pm to Gawler Central. A male worker strolled down to the train with his bottle of cleaner and a cloth. He stepped on the train, walked the length of the carriage and his cleaning agent and cloth never moved. Then a young woman cleaner entered the 2nd carriage. She wiped down the ticket machine in that carriage. Male worker went from 1st to 2nd carriage through train, still not raising cloth or spray. Female left 2nd carriage, walked up to where carriages were coupled, looked at her feet and walked away. I'm sorry but u constantly remind travellers of safety procedures during our travels but I don't see ur paid staff giving 2 hoots about it

I've been using the Adelaide Railway Station for over 30 years so I have a bit if familiarity with it. That being said I find that entering the station, finding the train platform I want, going through the barriers and onto the train is the quickest I've found of any railway station, local or international. The station hasn't changed much but nothing really needed to be done. The only problem I see is that the turnstiles are those ones with the 3 bars and are hard to get through. Changing to the ones that open to the side eg London tube would be an improvement. Also some updates food stores would be nice although I like that the same ones are still there after all these years.

Like many things in South Australia, this station definitely need to improve. Here are some suggestions. - The trains will often arrive at platforms other than those that are advertised. As a result passengers often have to race to other platforms at short notice in order to board the correct train - Unlike most train stations, the gates are not locked in particular directions during the morning and evening peak hours. A passenger heading out of the city in the morning -- faced with a wall of people heading in the opposite direction -- can have great difficulty making it quickly through the gates. - The staff lack a working knowledge of the timetables.

The trains here are always waiting for you. Coming from one train to the next though you don't usually catch it. My advice is to always catch an earlier train. Delays certainly aren't a foreign thing here. The Red trains are clean and tidy, but the Yellow ones aren't. I don't care but if you're a clean freak this is a heads up. Expect litter, feral people, wet seats and unfinished food on Yellow trains. Also, don't forget to set an alarm if you need to take trains to get to an exam. You'll be late. I have half an hour till my exam starts and I'm not sure I'll make it. Wish me luck.

It isn’t like we have much choice when it comes to a rail station in the Adelaide CBD. But compared to most central city train stations to other cities in Australia, and indeed the world, Adelaide has a clean, efficient and easy to navigate station. Probably as there are only 10 platforms; and a limited about of lines serviced but it covers the Adelaide metro area. Staff good - they do solve problems with metro cards or tickets if you have them. Security always visible.

On way to footy stopped &had food & a drink at HOME GOUND, on TORRENS PAVILLION AT CONVENTION CENTER!FANTASTIC!!! Atmosphere, food all great. Would be fantastic when weather warms up go along the Torrens great walk & stop in have a drink, Brunch,lunch whatever and just watch the city & beautiful view. Fantastic! Can't wait!! Although, bit pricey, but worth it. It's great give it a try, you won't be disappointed!!✅️✅️✅️

I'm a tourist and was trying to ask questions to understand how to use the transport here the correct way. Ended up having the staff member walk away from me, without acknowledging, or answering my questions. I wanted to understand 'how to properly' use Adelaide Metro. Gemma wasn't very helpful, and I'm disappointed that a ticket inspector wouldn't help a tourist to understand the local transport. I hope this isn't a normal case.

They don't have rubbish bins. I asked and was told they don't have them for 'obvious reasons'. I assume the 'obvious reasons' would be that they would get full and annoyingly have to be emptied. Also have had the train leave after running to the train and pressing the button as the door was closing. Still left without me they don't care. I know it's my fault but late at night when the next one isn't for an hour it's annoying.

The fact there is no actual bus interchange connection directly from the station is ridiculous. Passengers need to walk or tram to King William St or Currie St and try and find the stop that connects to a bus route. Instead, we have line up of taxis on North Tce instead of a bus station / interchange. What a backwards public transport system we have. Go figure it out yourself.

After the football game a group of intoxicated males were abusing & trying to fight Security at the train station. Security done nothing about this & even seemed intimidated by them. They still allowed them to board the train I was on where I spent 40 minutes listening to them yell abuse at each other & other people on the train including myself. Never again that was disgraceful.

The Adelaide city railway station is amazing. It reminds me of an out of city railway station in New York except this one’s the main station. There’s many food stalls here for a quick bite before hoping on the train. Trains go to many places. They are really quick as well. The platforms are greatly spaced and there is a lot of room here so you won’t fall into the pit.

Used to be great but the timetables have changed. Went to come back home from a Shania Twain concert on a Sunday and there were no trains running after 11:30. My housemate went to another concert that finished at 11 and missed the 11:30 train on the Tuesday. The websites PDF says the last train out of the city is at 12. What the heck is with the timetable change???

Well, I'm astounded that this place is actually allowed to operate. Its dark, drabby, shoddy, looks like something from a New York subway. Its cramped, very low roof. Not much singnage and info about the next train on the platforms. Very sad. seems Adelaide is caught in a time warp. Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth's stations are miles ahed of this dump!

Probably the oldest railway station in South Australia, Adelaide Railway station is situated perfectly at the heart of the CBD, close to the tram line and bus stops. The run on time and the service here is good. During the heat of summer, the SA government gave out free water bottles to the commuters, which was an act of top-level service.

Each time I get a cold, it's within a week of walking through here. Also, a few times I've seen the ambulance taking away people who have had heart attacks or died on the trains. Pretty sure there's some superbug lurking here. This place is probably the cause of the yearly zombie plague that sweeps the city. Recommended staying away.

Who doesn't admire these huge ceiling and its history. It brings u right into the cbd. Everything you would need from a central railway station i love it . Then as you walk out into the heat of Adelaide was a shock to the system, but every essential business the uni all sports ground wrapped around the river torrens love Adelaide

Some staffs with Wilson security has zero level respect to customers and not helpful at all. If visitors from non English speaking countries who are struggling with exiting, tickets machines, noticed they are laughing on them. Station is fabulous but for sure management needs to improve the level of customer services.

Easy place to go around by foot. Getting about is easy by public transport. The trams go from the city down to Glenelg Beach. It has a ring of parklands surrounding the CBD. Very cosmopolitan atmosphere. The high-street is the shopping precinct. Enjoy the shopping experience at The Adelaide Central Market.

Is this a meat factory or a public transport depot? The venue only caters for one directional traffic, if your trying to leave Adelaide at the same time a train has arrived forget it and catch a bus. Need to have some dedicated entry and exit channels so i dont feel like im in a LotR's battle scene.

Right next to Adelaide Casino, the iconic Adelaide train station was first opened in April 19, 1856. Over the years it had many renovations. I still love coming here, admiring the incredible architecture. Easy access to the public bathrooms and a dozen small food shops nearby.

Adelaide doesn't have a huge public transport system, but the Adelaide railway station is everything it needs to be. It's dirty at times but I like the new renovations going on right now, I hope the big screen TV's eventually show helpful information and not just advertising

Not enough platforms - trains constantly waiting for platform space. Not enough space for all the people in the station during busy periods. Bathroom facilities are also very poor and filthy and there are no lockers for bagguage. The platform areas are poorly lit also.

Its a Train Station. What is there to say. Catch a train here everyday because i have to work to pay bills. If it wasn't for needing money, i would avoid the city. Loud, too many people.... The underground atrium bit is quite nice. Pitty about the people.

The main station in the city, which looks as busy as one of the stations in the suburban areas. The architecture within the station is a sight to behold, it looks like there was much meticulous work to construct the grand hall area, almost like a museum.

You can't buy a single paper ticket at Adelaide railway station. What a load of rubbish. Great way to scam you out of extra money. $5 for a metro card and $5minimum deposit. For a $3 trip... great way of cornering people into something they don't need.

Now I've seen it all - other major cities might want to to take one from Adelaide's book on public transport hubs - Go RADelaide! Adelaide Railway Station will get you where you need to be... anywhere from here is heading in the right direction.

Min a month i have missed the train from my stop even after pressing the open botton on the train . Literally it wan not even a minute and the train driver didn’t even bother about me standing and pressing the door …

The city of Adelaide has so much to offer. We have Adelaide oval which hosts major sporting and this place is amazing. Adelaide people are really friendly and approachable don't be afraid to directions or where to get stuff.

It’s pretty convenient to get around most places near a train line. However it’s rather a struggle going outside to find bins considering there’s none inside, and the toilets could big time go with a refurbished look.

Security team in the station were awesome and deserve credit for their passion and knowledge to the area! Gave us a good history about the station plus places of interest around the area. Place is worth a visit.

We cannot get tickets from machine. So, i been to buy tickets through customer service & they are soo slow waiting in the queue from the last 45min. I hope i’ll get tickets before 12:00am

The station is easy to navigate around and the staffs are friendly. Adelaide Metro does a good job to ensure there are substitute busses for any interrupted service on the trains.

trains always on time..great running times..clean trains and comfortable..free travel for pensioners..how could I complain..If I miss the train then I'm not doing it properly

Walked everywhere. Visited many shops. Had coffee and cake. Yum. Found what I wanted. Took awhile. But thankfully some one managed to get just what I was searching for.

The free water fountain has been out of service for years — forcing those who need water to either go thirsty or pay for bottled water. It's not good enough.
