"What an amazing place"
"An absolute hidden gem nestled within Kloof! Boasts beautiful pieces of crafted items, stunning wooden carved doors, timeless treasures and a variety of colorful items on every surface! There are 10 rooms / units to choose from when making a booking - breakfast must be requested in advance"
"It was amazing a truly priceless experience"
"Thank you Alta for your warm hospitality, and thanks to you and your team for providing us guests with an awesome experience"
This accommodation is like nothing I have ever seen before. Just outside Kloof, a very steep, windy driveway lead us up from a dead end and levelled out at a roundabout outside this extraordinary building. A massive wooden gate loomed above us: the main entrance. But it is not in use for guests. Rather, we were told to drive around the side and sneak in through a smaller door. Looking back, this arrival perfectly delineated our entire sojourn at the Ammazulu African Palace. The inside looks like a cathedral - complete with pillars and the stations of the cross in Zulu and German - shaped like an S and designed by someone who seems to have been to a Hundertwasser Museum. It is impressive, kitsch, pretentious and playful all at once. During our first night, we were the only guests and didn't see any staff except the manager. In perfect silence, we ambled through the main nave and felt as if on a psychedelic trip through Disney Land and The Shining. A narrow spiral staircase winds up from the ground level to the gallery, where the guestrooms are located, and wide bridge connects one side to the other. A friendly manager had the unfortunate job of disappointing every single one of our hopes and expectations: the pool was closed, the sauna out of order, the steam room could not be used, and there was no breakfast, unless you ordered a day in advance. On the last day, we discovered an entire exhibition room of Zulu art, also in disuse, with lights turned off and the door locked. It seemed like there was so much this place could offer, but, like the front entrance: alas, not to us. There is no restaurant at the hotel; the kind manager told us that Steers, Debonairs and Fishaway usually deliver food, and we could also try Mister Delivery. The kitchen adjacent to the dining area contains two large fridges, a dishwasher and a microwave, but no bin and no utensils excepts knives and forks. You are not allowed to cook there. You may, however, heat up ready-to-eat meals in the microwave. And what to do with the empty containers? The manager explained that a bin was a liability, as it attracted monkeys. Guests are therefore encouraged to leave their left overs, empty bottles and containers in the sink, whence "the ladies will fetch it all". Apart from this being rather smelly and unsanitary, I am not convinced it keeps the monkeys away. Our room was large and clean; a double door opened up to our own patio with a table and two benches; , a spacious bathroom featured an open shower right opposite and facing a toilet, and a wide bath tub around the corner. Windows in the wall between bathroom and bedroom suggest that privacy should not be your utmost priority. We enjoyed great water pressure and temperature. For some reason, the shower's soap dish was located about 180 cm from the floor. Being a shorty, I could hardly reach it and had to place my toiletries on the floor. The place has the atmosphere of an abandoned palace past its prime. It could do with a bit of maintenance: walking along the corridors, you can feel tiles coming loose underfoot; rain water dripped through the awning onto our patio table, a large glass pane on the dining table is cracked in several places, and the kitchen cabinets have also seen better days. This accommodation's best feature is definitely its location not far from Durban and Umhlanga, but beautifully secluded and quiet at the edge of a gorge overlooking the Kranskloof. On rainy days, we could spend hours reading and listening to the rain, while there are several restaurants in relative vicinity. It was also fascinating to wander around the building, be dazzled by the colours and artworks. All in all, we did not feel particularly pampered as guests. The manager seemed to be doing her best with limited means in difficult circumstances. While staying here was definitely a worthwhile experience, it is probably not one to be repeated.
What an amazing place. Highly recommend. A true treasure in Africa. The staff were amazing. Alta is an amazing host and a hive of information. Breakfast was always perfect. It was my wives Birthday hence the trip and she ensured the additional room package was not only perfectly organised and displayed in a romantic setting. There is so much true African art that we were in awe of it all, located in a beautiful building and setting. Vere serene and a room with a view to die for. Yes some of it is dated, but that all added character to the place. The remaining staff were very polite, thorough and over and beyond to make the visit so enjoyable. I would and will return again and again. Tranquility at its best. 5* all round. Thank you so much. Ken

An absolute hidden gem nestled within Kloof! Boasts beautiful pieces of crafted items, stunning wooden carved doors, timeless treasures and a variety of colorful items on every surface! There are 10 rooms / units to choose from when making a booking - breakfast must be requested in advance. Plenty of restaurants nearby and within close vicinity to the palace - Mr Delivery is also available. Our unit was stunning! Luxurious, clean and inviting! It contained a mini bar fridge with complementary items, utensils and kettle. The Wifi was easily accessible, the TV had a variety of channels to choose from and there were 2 heaters and a portable fan available for use. The room was neat and tidy, with clean and comfortable linen and a beautiful solid wood cupboard. There was also a safe available The bathroom was the highlight of the unit as it contained a shower cubicle, toilet, 2 sinks and a bath tub, with towels and essentials provided. The super high ceiling and retractable doors make for a unique and special touch! If you are in need of a little retreat, this is definitely a place to visit! Surrounded completely by natural elements, tucked away from the usual hustle and flow, the peace and tranquility which the palace offers will leave you feeling rejuvenated and relaxed! 10 / 10
It was amazing a truly priceless experience..relaxing peaceful tranquil with all the whistles chucks and songs nature has to offer. The sunrise was incredible the fresh morning dew and grass aroma breezes through the spacious Presidential suite - most delightful aromatherapy. The sunsets- just glorious from the balcony through to the bed the orange rays beamed from and through the majestic valley gorge right into the suite. What an intimate moment it was as the sun sank beyond the hills. In a few words the stay AT Ammazulu African was PARADISE. Cherry on top was the par excellence service from Alta , she is incredibly amazing! Zama thank you the stay was sweeter with some cake and cuppacinno ...My experience from the place was theraupuetic amidst these very strange times it was truly invigorating a breathe of fresh air.I fell deeply in love LITERARY -...STOP THE TOW ...EXECUTE...

Thank you Alta for your warm hospitality, and thanks to you and your team for providing us guests with an awesome experience. An establishment of this size and grandeur must be appreciated in its entirety. The lush, beautifully maintained gardens, massive sculptures, architectural masterpiece and interiors with the most exquisite artefacts of cultural and historical beauty I have ever seen. Truly a hidden gem. Out of this world. Unique. Luxury B&B with high ceilings, spacious and beautifully decorated rooms, stunning bathroom, furnished balcony to sit and relax. The communal kitchen is just as stunning as everything else. Excellent service with daily fresh towels and more than enough replenishments. We are hoping our next visit there would be more for pleasure and not business, to allow us time to enjoy the place. Wishing you every success for the future.

My recent stay was the first and only one night. The place is beautifully decorated and maintains a strong African theme. The executive suite I stayed in was very spacious. The room included a small kitchenette huge living room and small dining room area. The bedroom was very spacious and included a bath and shower. The room was generally very clean and comes with free WiFi which allowed for multiple device connections. I found the signal very poor in the bedroom but fairly good in the rest of the room. Whilst the room was beautifully decorated some minor issues were noted like flaking wall paint and damaged tiles under the bed. A fully fitted kitchen was available to all guests. I did not have breakfast but would definitely have some if I do find myself in the area. Beautiful place and definitely worth a visit. As always just my opinion.

The presidential suite is an affordable luxury room that catered for more than all our needs. You feel like a celebrity at this unique hidden gem. Alta is thee most friendliest and caring hostess who puts your mind at ease and ensures you feel special and like palace royalty. The prvt massage on the balcony with your beloved and two excellent ladies to take your stress away was pure heaven. Kwezi and Zanele were excellent massage therapists too. Coupled with this trip we visited the sculture gardens nearby which is an awesome combination if you visit the palace. This palace is authentic and a not to be missed experience.

Stunning African luxury experience No words to describe this amazing place. It defies all description as there are no hyperboles big enough. Basically the word ‘palace’ is not an exaggeration and your mind will be blown by the incredible attention to detail, the huge statues, the eclectic and quirky art, design and decoration. Massive ceilings and big open spaces. The presidential room is stunning with its own huge balcony directly overlooking the Kranskloof gorge. Friendly, helpful staff and beautiful home cooked breakfasts personally tailored to our vegan dietary needs. What an experience. Absolutely next level !
What a beautifull place and a great experience. We had a work conference for the day and the staff made every effort to go out of their way to assist. The venue is stunning you can wander around for hours and see something different every meter. I imagine that if you were to go back in time this is what and african palace would have looked like Its a bit out of the way but google maps takes you right to their gate

This was our second time staying here, and we were again amazed at the amount of detail and thought that went into this place. The rooms are great, and big and have everything you need and more, whether for a one night stay or a romantic getaway. Just beware that breakfast is a cold breakfast and you pay extra if you want a hot breakfast depending on what you want. But the view of Kloof Gorge and the nature reserve is great from the eating area. The driveway is quite steep and windy and really bumpy so take note.
Alta was amazing from our check in and check out she really did provide amazing customer service She showed us our room and a tour of the place it was stunning I loved the view of the mountains The room was warm and cosy with the heaters The water pressure was great Ohh not to forget the warm breakfast that was provided I loved the place highly recommended They just had a minor issue with the speed point and the drive way is a big gravel like not suitable for small cars but listen above it all I liked the place
Didn't stay at the African Palace, just did the tour. Peter Dud not consider wheelchairs when he design this of his, but it is quite remarkable what he has done & incredibly resourceful. It is too much much to take in on the first visit so I'll go back for sure. Alta gave us a wonderful, interesting talk. A very enjoyable morning.

I'm running out of words to describe the Beauty in this Place. Their service is out of this world❤. And their Roomsunfortunately when we visited they did prepare any meals due the COVID 19; But they are nearby restuarants; we used Mr D. If You Love Zulu Culture and Deco this is the place to be. Peaceful place; great views... All I Can Say is; It a must visit at a reasonable Price.
An absolute gem of a place nestled cozily amidst the rolling hills of the gorge. Amazing birds, butterflies and views make this an awesome stay. I would recommend this place any day... all day long. Service was fantastic from Zama and Alta. Keep it up guys. The presidential suite that we stayed in was top notch.

If you haven't visited this extraordinary venue you are missing a true gem of South Africa. The owners vision is brought to life with unusual pieces of Africa. Sadly the hotel is getting out of its long Covid slumber, but one can imagine this property in normal times. Very well appointed rooms and all the usual trappings of a 5 star establishment this place needs to be better supported
Absolutely amazing place. Overwhelmingly full of things and a positive feast for the eyes. Didn't stay in the hotel itself but I can imagine it's well worth it. The woodwork and composition of the location is mind boggling. The staff we did get to meet were friendly and approachable.

This is an amazing place! Service is very good and the food top notch. Take time to wander around and enjoy the very different artworks on display. The long, curved tables are ideal for a large party, you can look down the table and, because of the curve, see all the seated guests. This is an "arty" persons paradise.
Very upmarket African feel accommodation. Rooms are spacious and extremely comfortable. Management always very friendly and helpful, Chef Alta is a gem! Ensure you book your meals as the standard of her cooking is to die for. Only one thing to be looked at is the driveway from street level as it is a car killer.

A retreat for my husband's birthday and what a treat it was. An amazing place with an amazing hostess. The room with its view exceeded all expectations. So much to see. Will definately return to enjoy more of this wonderful place. Thank you Alta and staff for a wonderful time. More
Very quirky space. The interiors were a bit over the top for my liking but the rooms are very spacious. They serve an amazing breakfast and the views from the breakfast room is spectacular. The place could use some background music in the common spaces to give it some ambience.
A very interesting palace with wonderful array of eclectic art. HAVE TO visit if in the area to embrace the Zulu heritage. Breath taking views from the dining room with an even better view from atop the chicken lounge. Have spotted leopard in valley so keep your eyes peeled.

Interesting venue with good service but there is some neglect in the garden. We had a room overlooking the gorge but could not see it because of branches in the way. A big let-down was NO AIRCONDITIONING. Breakfast was great.
