Why did it take the bean so long to do its homework? Because it was procaffeinating. And Procaffeniate you should when the Coffee is this good ! Caffè Umbria`s roasting go back to the 1940's, when Ornello Bizzarri built his roastery in Perugia, Italy and I know this tid-bit only because I genuinely love their coffee and feel that this place gives an authentic Italian experience with their espresso based drinks . Located in the heart of the Pearl District, this is an ideal spot to spend some time people watching , just sitting by a book or hanging out with a friend or two. The café is spacious ,well-lit and has lots of seating both indoor and outdoors. I am a fan of the Gusto Crema and Bizzarri blend , as they make for really good drip as well espresso drinks(Cappuccino ,macchiato, caffè latte) . They also have a lot of pastries ,sandwiches ,pasta ,soups and other baked goods , along with wine and beer . Service is friendly and fast .

Umbria cafe is absolutely one of, if not the very best coffee and cafe shop in Portland. It opens with 9 foot steel and glass doors into a spacious main seating area with two walls of glass letting floods of light in even on the cloudiest of days, with tasteful spots of lighting both hanging from the ceiling and tucked into the recesses of the false ceilings. The whole place is covered with sandy tile of different shapes and the seating is nicely spaced. All the staff is amazingly hard working and surprisingly unified, classy in both action and dress, and the food and coffee is of great quality. Their branding is spot on, light, timeless, bold, historic, and valient. Sometimes they have live music, jazz and other cafe types, and I cannot imagined being disappointed there with anything. In a word tasteful, in a few elegantly poised, and relaxed. I almost exclusively go there now.

Really high-quality espresso, great pastry selection, very friendly staff. Umbria is a no-frills experience, not pretentious but still very cute. However, I always seem to have a horrible experience dining in at Umbria despite having high hopes. It can be like having coffee at a gas station. Drip coffee is not their specialty, so I would avoid this on the menu, flavor profile is low-quality and similar to diner coffee. Homeless people hang out inside and the place smells as such which tends to ruin the experience of smelling and tasting coffee. The staff clammer by with carts of cleaning equipment. Very stark lighting, the appliances are abrasively loud -- you cannot hear a conversation. I always want it to be a wonderful experience at Umbria but it keeps failing me.

I was so so disappointed And angry today to drive by , looking for parking in order to go in and get coffee, only to see NOT ONE CUSTOMER inside the cafe wearing a mask!!! NOT ONE!!! The workers were! And still...I was/am just appalled. 7 months in and this is where we are? Hubris and bravado regarding Covid have and will continue to cost lives. I just can’t believe that the workers didn’t feel able to confront customers about it and I am just appalled that my fellow customers would have to be reminded/confronted...7 months in. I won’t be back. EVER. And I will spread the word...seriously...so beyond not responsible nor acceptable and so selfish. Expect more from a local spot.

This is a cute little cafe, I stopped in here briefly to escape the rain on an overcast weekend. The atmosphere is very calm, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Seating is spaced nicely and it's not too loud or crowded inside. I ordered a strawberry rhubarb latte which was one of the specials on offer. It sounded like a unique drink with a lot of potential to be great or terrible, but this was unique and delicious. Overall I had a very positive experience, and would be happy to return.

Nice place, they have some impressive indoor plants though, one is a 9 foot tall coffee plant. The coconut macaroons are delicious and the hot chocolate is better than most you'll find.

Interesting experience. The coffee quality was fine. However, the dine-in experience was unsettling. The three staff in store during my visit spent most of their time on their phones, putting them down only to serve customers. At no time did I observe any staff wash their hands in between switching from their phones to serving customers. At one point one of the staff was wiping their nose with bare hands. During these times, I'd think sanitary conditions should be goal number one. Also, I get that staff aren't always excited to be at work, but at minimum, reduce the personal aspect when on the clock, especially in front of the clientelle.

Cafe Umbria is a reflection of a real deal Italian coffee shop. It looks and feels like many I visited in Rome. The coffee is top quality, establishment roasted with their unique touch. The service is friendly and efficient as you would expect. It only takes a visit or two to feel like your part of the family there. And the baked good pairs perfectly with what ever your favorite coffee drink is. For me it’s a cappuccino and a quiche for the perfect day starter. They also have a great selection of their coffee varieties by the bag to take home.

This is such a cute little coffee shop! The chai latte tasted amazing! I was delighted that I could really taste the spices and it didn’t taste like a bagged tea I could get at the grocery store! It was so refreshing iced! Prices are about what you’d expect for a coffee shop, and they do have a public WiFi but my tea came with a little chocolate, which was so cute! The service was very fast and friendly!

This place has become a regular date spot for my partner and I. He showed me this place and I feel so deeply in love with it! Edit: he broke up with me and I went back recently to process things, and I'm sure I looked a little silly, but the coffee and the staff really (unknowingly) made me feel better about it all. Thanks for the wonderful coffee and the bittersweet memories! I'll be coming back frequently, even if it'll be on my own from now on.

barista was giving me a cold, dead stare and said absolutely nothing to me during our entire transaction ,, made our drinks to-go without asking even though everyone around us clearly had theirs in mugs. called out our drinks in the wrong order of names, also incredibly overly sweet matcha latte. I felt like I just walked in and everyone hated me LOL. just lots of cold stares - we weren't loud and 2 hours before close?

This place is so lovely, definitely some of the best coffee I’ve ever had in Portland. That’s not to say I know a lot about coffee, but I know when I wanna keep going back that it’s good! The staff are very helpful and there are some really great drinks! The first time I came I got a mocha and the latte art was so amazing! It came with a pretty piece of chocolate too. So fancy!

An Italian import cafe with some interesting offerings. The coffee roast is bitter, so order accordingly. Outstanding macaroons! We tried the espresso spritz, too (an Italian soda with espresso in it). If you try it, it’s better straight from the can than over ice. We were there late afternoon on a Saturday. The place and employees looked like it had been a rough day, but were happy to answer the questions we posed.

Great coffee and really nice staff; they have a nice selection of different drinks and sizes so there is sure to be something for everyone. I go there at least once a week and it is always a great time. My usual order is a lavender latte w/ oat milk. Made w/ the same consistency. Parking: depending on the time of day, parking might be hard to get, so plan accordingly I will say that depending on the time of day, it gets rather busy and at times, there might not be a table indoors, so plan accordingly. Noise levels vary

  • Oscar Brosiki

I’m a picky person when it comes to what I like in my Lattè, Cortada. I typically request an Extra extra hot and I ask for condensed milk in my drink so I don’t have to use sugar. They found the Condensed milk and made it exactly what I requested without giving me mean and strange looks unlike some of the other Coffee Shops in Portland. The Pastries are excellent I highly recommend the Apricot blossom. I look forward to coming back.

❤️ Iced matcha latte ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - perfectly sweet - really refreshing - my favorite matcha in Portland Swiss cheese and ham sandwich ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ - didn't blow my mind of course - but the bread was perfectly crunchy - it was heated - the garlic butter was pretty good - came with green olives ❤️ Veggie panini ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - had goat cheese, tomato jam, roasted veggies - delicious crunch and perfectly sweet, but mostly savory - very filling ❤️Corn danish ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - perfectly flakey - creamy - a hint of sweetness Bathroom code: 1982

We stopped by for a latte. Typically, Cafe Umbria serves the best coffee in Portland. On this day however, the coffee was not great. We were fairly disappointed. The coffee was way too hot, likely around 175°F or more, which can scald the milk and alter the taste. I will go back, because we likely got a tired or overworked barista, but what a disappointment this visit was.

My go-to coffee spot in Portland. Such wonderful service, great coffee, and spot-on presentation. Nice that there are a fair number of food offerings that aren’t disappointing like many coffee shops. The savory spinach pastry in particular is so good! They offer nice sandwiches for lunch, too. Oh, and the Apple pastries are nearly identical to a German Apfeltasche! Most importantly, they never seem to burn their espresso (like so many other places) and the ambiance is cozy, familiar, and friendly.

My favorite coffee shop in Pearl. Love their coffee. From last weekend the shop is under going construction but it will be completed by next Saturday, May 13th. One of those places that has very interesting lattes that don’t disappoint! As an adventurous latte lover, even I was a little skeptical at the latte I chose, as honey is not normally an ingredient you can taste strongly, but boy did this kick a punch of honey. I appreciate that you don’t have to have a snob’s palette to enjoy this coffee place. Snob’s don’t feel excluded, they have things here for you too. As a tourist, I will miss this place.

  • Jake Light

This place is sharp. I ordered a doppio and asked the barista additionally to make me whatever she wanted to and it was awesome! I ended up receiving a cafe el pepe which happens to be a nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper late feel. The black pepper really slaps and I would highly recommend stopping by this place if you're ever in Portland Thanks for the awesome coffee, the shot was great

  • Sepehr Azari

The ambiance is bright and energetic during the day. The staff is knowledgeable and skillful. I'm not a huge coffee drinker and I don't necessarily know all the fun terms and names so I just told them what I felt like drinking and they made exactly what I expected. I clearly forgot the name (again I'm not too big on coffee itself) but I loved the patience and understanding of the staff.

  • Maryus Martsyalis

Update: came back 2 months later and the coffee was amazing!! Just like in pre pandemic times, stoked to have my favourite coffee and it makes me optimistic about Portland's eventual recovery in general :) Old review:Used to love this place, but since the lockdown the coffee got really inconsistent. Tastes like they forget to replace/repack the expresso between shots...

Visited several times during a recent trip to PDX. Great coffee (of course), and the Corrado was steaming hot - just how I like it. But here's a pro tip - Do not miss their jam or Nutella biscuits. They are addictive, and make for a wonderful breakfast or snack or dessert or anytime eat. The space is clean and fresh, service is prompt and pleasant. We'll be back.

Very good lavender latte. Think the iced may be better as it brings out the lavender more but hot is good also. Helped on our long drive back home on our last day in Portland. Didn’t know they have locations in Seattle, my next stop!

Velvet foam warms your mouth and the perfectly roasted coffee outdoes all coffees. Their cappuccino was perfectly prepared with clouds of foam floating above the mornings waking waiting below. The warmth of the shop helped us recover from the cutting cold of the wind outside. The staff were just as warm and the pastries were like dessert.

Really great place I recommend it if you are in Portland downtown and looking for nice Caffè. Staff is super friendly. The place is really nice looking inside because a lot of Caffè shops in Portland look old and scatchy. We ordered cappuccino with cacao it was awesome. Have huge variety of Italian breakfast sandwiches and pastries.

  • C. War

Swanky coffee joint. It's hit and miss what you'll get from the staff here. Some of them were super nice and some of them were super snobby. The coffee was good, and they were also willing to make items that were "off-menu" which I appreciate because there's a few very simple drinks I love that are super hard to find.

  • Erik Pelyukhno

I’m so happy with my first Cafe Umbria experience. The people were so nice and made me feel special, their specialty drink “bicerin” is chocolate lover’s heaven and it’s a beautiful space, Frank Sinatra playing in the background and friendly conversations around. Definitely bringing a friend next time I come here!

I am posting this review solely on the GF coffee cake I purchased. I was pretty disappointed... it looked so yummy but it was so incredibly dry that when I was eating it I breathed in through my nose and somehow that carried the DUST of the cake into my throat and I started choking! That's how dry this thing was!

Great coffee and baristas, this is what they're known for. You won't get a bad cup of anything here. All espresso shots will be pulled to perfection with top-notch presentation. I've had a couple pastries that were not bad, but not great. The atmosphere is very Pearl District high-end.

Nice euro-style atmosphere. Coffee tastes more like Starbucks than Stumptown. Sleek, modern and clean. Service is hit or miss. Can often find soccer on the big LCD TV.

This is more than a coffee shop, their staff has helped me with client meetings more than a few times! Wonderful pastries from local bakery. Superb coffee and drinks.

Had the Espresso Shakerato (double espresso over ice) and Mocha Martorana (almond infused Pernigotti chocolate sauce, espresso and steamed milk) WOW! EXCELLENT!

Anthony from New York. Thank you for hiring this man. Ever since juan pablo left the vibes were not the same. As soon as I walked in I had a smile on my face

Not a relaxing cafe atmosphere. It was too bright and open inside. Lattes were just ok. They seemed heavy on the cream and didn't have much coffee flavor.

A nice spot in the Pearl with a fair amount of seating. Not a bad place to study, parking can be a little difficult to find on busy days though.

Beautiful, light, airy cafe that’s even better than its hometown equivalents in Seattle.

Sweet spot! Great coffee made professionally and served with a smile. Food great too. Good place to people watch or sit and work as well.

Very fancy feel, coffee drink prices not much higher than other cafes though. Sat and did computer work for an hour uninterrupted.

Love the hot chocolate here. The cold brew with sweet cream is also great. You can also work here peacefully on your laptop.

Cozy atmosphere, life-changing amazing coffee, friendly staff. Clean. Everything I was looking for. Thank you so much.

Nice place to stop for a latte. Note that a small has 1 shot of espresso while a large has two. Unsure about medium.
