Enticed by proclamation of half price pizzas I donned my most festive button up shirt, suede underwear and turkey-skin leather sandals and waddled into Cargo on a Wednesday night. After a good few tooth gratingly awkward minutes standing at the bar debating whether this is a place you sit down and claim a table or get delegated one by the staff, I do what any modern man does in such situations - pulled out my phone. I felt immediate relief and a certain tangible comfort as I flicked the screen one way and the other, mumbled uncommittedly and shrugged when people turned and wave their arms at me. Finally I was forced to talk to a person as I had gradually, inexplicably made my way to the bar. Myself and the bar staff had a few moments of absurdist laughter and heartfelt tears as I order a pizza with more Italian words in it then the Good Book itself, and we found ourselves hugging each other and patting one anothers backs and wiping the tears off each others cheeks. A real human experience. I slapped down the credit card on the table and gripped two glasses of different IPAs that tasted remarkably just like every other IPA in existence. Somewhere in all this they had told me that there was a 70 minute expected wait on the pizza. In retrospect this has broken me. The very fact that they call times above one hour in the minute range not only tickles my sensibilities but does lead to thoughts of how often this may occur. I said "no worries cobba" and smiled even though somewhere in me my stomach quivered and I felt the barstaff's smile falter as my eyes unconsciously slid towards the kitchen where the one small pizza oven looked lonely and neglected and just ready for a pizza right then and there. Well I don't want you to get caught up and miss key geological timeframes with my interview but rest assured the time it has taken me to write this could well have equated to the cooking of 1% of my pizza. I would argue that the human species as a whole was different when I received my pizza compared to when I ordered and I am not sure the social and technological advancements we have come through are a good thing. When I walked outside my eyes squinted at the noise and people roared past in some sort of motorised vehicle that was only whispered about in dungeon and dragons game rooms and sci-fi conferences before I entered Cargo. In this new world I find myself in I can only recall with a sorrowful feeling of having missed out on something vital the times and experiences, and people that I have missed and never had part of my life because of my journey to Cargo. But the one thing I do have is the knowledge that the pizza with the Italian words for a name is quite nice, and at least they lived up to the wait times they promised.
The pizzas are like 0.2mm thick, hard and leathery. They are the worst pizzas we've ever had in Hobart. You'd need to be pretty drunk to find them "acceptable". Trying to yank and bite thru the leathery thin base is pretty off putting. The toppings are sparse. Half a chopped cherry tomato here.... A piece of shredded cheese there. You don't get much of anything for 22 bucks. We were still hungry afterwards so walked to another restaurant and ordered a real dinner, so total spend was really up there. And don't order the number 15 pizza. It says it has "chilli flakes". I've eaten some very spicy things in my time, including a Ghost Pepper and a Carolina Reaper chilli. The number 15 pizza has so much chilli flake dusted or dumped on it, the thing was inedible and just tasted purely like eating a bottle of chilli flakes on a base of cardboard. Very disappointed. If this is the quality of "pizza" they're going to serve (which looks nothing like the photos) they won't be there much longer.
One of the many hospitality joints in Salamanca but definitely worth checking out, especially if you're a fan of authentic Italian-style pizza. You can sit either outside or inside and the venue itself is multifunctional: food and casual drinks by day and nightclub by night as many venues are within Salamanca's repurposed heritage sea port stores. I'm not sure whether there is an English menu available but when I met, I only saw a menu which was written in Italian: was a challenge to read and had to infer what the ingredients were. May be worth asking if they have an English menu or for advice from staff if you can't speak Italian well. My mate and I had the Carne pizza which is a spicy Meatlovers option: my mate and I loved it but had to go to a McDonald's for a thick shake to cool down our mouths. If you like hot and spicy food, that shouldn't be a problem though. Give Cargo a go, that's for sure!
My wife and I have been coming here for pizzas every time we come down to Tasmania, for close to 20 years. Until now, we couldn't get enough of the food served here. When we arrived, we had nice friendly service. We ordered, had our drinks and waited. We watched as other people, who arrived after us, get and finish there food, then leave. After an hour and half we wanted to walk out but couldn't as we had to pay upfront for our meals. We finally got the attention of a waiter who went inside and sorted it out. About ten minutes later, we received two of our pizzas and got the third five minutes after that. None were to our liking. None looked like the pictures online. My wife had a gluten free base and felt ill with the first bite. That happens when it's not gluten free. Basically, we waited over an hour and a half for over priced, poorly made pizzas. We won't be back.
"One step up from frozen pizza" Bases are under hydrated, heavily docked and machine formed. This all adds up to a base that has no texture, development or any redeeming qualities AT ALL. This is some of the worst pizza I have ever eaten. Head cook assured me that the dough was made fresh on premises, but I have my doubts. Lack of oven development, awful texture and flat lifeless product suggests a pre-made frozen product. I watched the pizza being made, and the base was pulled pre-formed on a board from a proving box, and then heavily docked with a roller-docker. The sauce was also overley sweet, and also tasted pre-packaged. We tried 3 pizzas, including the butternut pumpkin, which had undercooked (suspect microwaved) pumpkin on it. Overall - highly disappointing. If you love pizza- give this place a wide berth.
A bit overrated, but the only place that seems to have any kind of vibe past 8pm from Sundays - Thursdays! Literally every single resto around it was dead. Also pretty pricey for mediocre food. I do love the takeout window, and there is ample seating. I'd say the only redeeming quality about this place was the service! BRAVO on that, because great service is virtually unheard of in Oz. I ordered the roasted cauliflower, was told it would take about 25 minutes, and if that was OK. I said yeah that's fine we're enjoying drinks! Gave them almost 40 minutes and benefit of the doubt - low & behold my order was forgotten. So it took about 50 minutes to get me roasted cauliflower. Wow. Wouldn't really recommend unless you're literally looking to be in the middle of Salamanca Place.
I had an incident occur at Cargo recently, at the bar where I was pushed to the ground by another patron, causing me sprain my ankle on the downfall, as well as cutting my hand on shards of glass on the floor from my drink smashing that I had in my hand at the time. No staff member checked on me, asked if I was okay or offered to help. I even had to ask for a first aid kit after showing my bleeding hand as no one offered any assistance and security were nowhere to be seen. I then messaged on Facebook the next day to explain the situation. They have seen my message and have chosen not to respond. I could not be more disappointed. Would not recommend. Extremely poor service.
Went in for a couple of catch updrinks with friends, bar was relatively empty except for a larger group of approx 15 mid 20's booths were full but rest of seating empty, still took 10 mins to get some service at the bar for a round of drinks, it was suggested that we use their app ordering system to reduce waiting times this turned to be the worst decision ever. 15mins after ordering we had to go to the bar and ask how our drinks were going, only to be told they hadn't started making any of them. 10mins after this we got our drinks. Needless to say we won't be returning, very disappointed in the service.
The food was OK. However I would not recommend this place if you are hungry & looking for food reasonably quickly. The seating was large sofas more meant for lazing around than to sit & eat comfortably. For an Italian pizza restaurant, where pizzas are standards orders three large pizzas took more than 45 minutes to arrive. The management is aware that it takes long time to get food to patrons & mentioned that they have only small ovens. But did not show any real interest in changing the set up or to increase oven sizes to get food faster to users. Unless you have a lot of time an avoidable eating place.
The establishment seems to be suffering, for years now, an overwhelming identity crisis. The venue’s multiple personalities may well lure the weak and feeble but do not fall for it. What it lacks in pizza, this place makes up for with the astoundingly heavy volume of piss on the bathroom floors. I mean the place is a safety hazard. I’m still not convinced this place knows it’s not a “pizza lounge” which it provocatively claims to be. It’s time to wake up Cargo, and pick a side. Sell awful food or flood the Salamanca strip with your piss. You can’t to both to us. It’s just not fair.
Straight up the worst dining experience I’ve ever had. Two hours for one pizza, never got the pizza. Ruined our night. Manager “Johno” (you’ll know him when you see him) obviously only got the position because everyone else quit. Two FOH doing their best to keep this sinking ship afloat while chucklebutt annoyed customers with his incompetence and hung out in the open kitchen (nobody wants to watch their food not being cooked while gross looking pizzas are slung out to people who arrived after you). This place is dead weight to Hobart and is dragging it’s reputation down.
Cargo is by far the worst club in all of Hobart. It gets so ridiculously packed in such a small space, it takes ~30 minutes to get served and while you’re waiting you get pushed and shoved from all directions. Once you get your drink, you won’t be able to find your way out of the crowd without getting half of your drink spilled on you. I really don’t see the point of ever going to Cargo as a nightclub, but the food during the day is good. Do NOT come here late, only come here for lunch/dinner during the day. This would be a 1 star review if it weren’t for the good food.
Just wanted a take away pizza. Sunday night was meant to be half price, but you only find out half-price only applies to eat-in when they have already taken your order. Asked for the pizza without chorizo (I don't eat meat), but it came with chunks of meat. I suspect they put all the meat on and then picked it off, but missed some. Base was like cheap cake, passata tasted like tomato sauce, oily cheese swamped the scarce pieces of toppings. Sad to say the worst pizza ever. The cook was friendly though. Nothing personal but you have to lift your game Cargo Bar.
Came for after work drinks and dinner. Lovely vibes. Music wasn't too loud so we could still chat. Cocktails were on point and pizza and dips hit the spot. Perfect booth seating option for a large groups.

Pizza making is an art ... one which Cargo Bar Pizza has unfortunately not mastered. The quality of pizza leaves a lot to be desired. The base is doughy and the cheapest quality products are used for the topping. The result is a pizza that does not even compare favourably to a frozen pizza purchased from your local Woolies. If you are starving and not particularly concerned about taste or presentation then I guess it will suffice. However, if you are looking for a great pizza, keep looking ... you will not find it here.
Nice atmosphere and the pizza is quite good. They have vegan options. The service was really slow, 40 mins to have food but we were chilling with friends so it wasn't a problem. The order was wrong we ordered a gluten free pizza and they came out with a normal one and then we order a margherita with no cheese and they delivered on with cheese. But the waiter was nice and he was quite fast (for Hobart standards) to make 2 almost right pizzas again. Nice experience because we were with friends but nothing special
Amazing bar tender, chill atmosphere and lovely clientele. Ordered a mushroom pizza which sounded absolutely suberb. The waiter delivered the wrong pizza - being polite we ate it anyway. Only for our pizza to be brought out as the initial Pizza was finished. Our waiter then took the pizza back to the kitchen where the staff loudly gossiped and insulted us for eating the pizza given despite it not being at fault. Incredibly insulting and will not be returning if that’s the attitude we are met with.
Ok so it took an hour to get a pizza and I can say I've never waited that long for a pizza :/ however one of the waitresses was great; she offered us free drinks for not being told it was going to take so long. Live music is really good; seriously thought they had james blunt playing on cd and got a shock when i saw the musician inside. The greek lamb pizza wasnt quite what i sas expecting; more lamb mince pizza not bad. Waiting staff are great; would love the food to be quicker though.
I went here on Saturday night and got charged twice for drinks. Obviously there was a mistake and I paid for extra drinks but the rude girl serving us wouldn't admit her error and I got charged two times ($59). We got a vodka OJ, vodka soda water and vodka raspberry. We explained what had happened but the girl was so rude and yelled abuse at us rather than attempting to sort it out maturely. Very disappointed, usually the staff here are amazing but this girl has ruined it for us.
Walked pass the open coffee session of Cargo and ordered a cold coffee drink, I don't mind waiting for a while for a nice one, but unfortunately the drink quite disappointed me, and it cost $7.5. In addition, when I paid in cash after one of the kitchen staff completed my payment for the drink, I saw the kitchen staff back to his salad/food pre straight away without washing hand... that is unacceptable. Hope the Food&Safty on staffs training can be improved.
Great place. We were wandering the streets looking for somewhere to enjoy dinner. Cargo Bar had plenty of outdoor seating with heaters under the outdoor area. Being a Monday night they were offering a special of any two pizzas (any size and any toppings) and a bottle of house wine for $50. We chose a very drinkable bottle of bubbles. Pizza was hot and tasty. Staff were friendly and efficient. We really enjoyed our entire evening at Cargo Bar
Utterly horrendous customer service. Hard to imagine worse service having paid money for said service. Online order said 15 mins, arrived to collect on time and was told it would be an hour.... after waiting 5 minutes at counter for any staff behind it to even acknowledge I was there. No apology. Pizzas were eventually handed over cold having been sat on a bench for 15 odd minutes. Think again before ordering here, prefer others.
While meandering around the pier, Salamanca market and nearby places, I walked into Cargo Bar expecting to be fed a good lunch of delicious pizzas. After waiting for about 7 minutes at the bar and the counter for someone to take my order, I left and had my lunch at a nearby restaurant. I will try to go back next week when I visit Hobart again to see what went wrong. But this instance might be a sign of a need for improvement.
I bought lazy yak beer for $11.5 and it’s bit expensive, usually I buy tap beer for 7 or 8 but the location was perfect, it was busy however they have enough space inside and outside, it’s good for dinner, different range of food and drinks, decoration was very fancy and it was nice and clean, there is enough parking in front of it. Experienced Staffs and they are around.Toilet was very clean, totally they doing great job.
Great drink specials but the vego pizza was less than ideal. Would have given her a cheeky 1/10; the 1 being the fact that the vegan cheese didn’t cost extra. Wouldn’t recommend if you’re vegetarian/vegan, albeit the meat options looked delicious if I was into that. Unfortunately I’m not. Lacking a little spice and I’m meaning metaphorically. Asparagus and capsicum ain’t it chief but I respect the hustle.
Wait time was terrible, looks like they cannot handle serving to a full restaurant. After we ordered our pizza, it was 1hr 20mins until service. Would suggest they serve more options than just woodfired pizza, never waited that long for anything. Pizza base was nice, the Deluxe lamb pizza was missing something though, needed a goats cheese or yoghurt, as was too dry. Deffinately not worth the wait.
Used to love the food at Cargo … is this place under new management or what!?! The service was non existent- just a cyber button or inside pay up front…. the pizza was AWFUL the bases were like some kind of mass produced item didn’t seem fresh (at wood fired prices) and went cold quickly. No vouching for the antipasto platter for 4 …really….NO not good enough folks…appalled +++
Great Pizza and half price on Thursdays. Although still a great venue, there have been many further places that have opened in recent years that now rival Cargo Bar. Which I guess is good, as it is no longer overrun by "wannabe tweenagers". This is now a chilled and relaxed place to enjoy your pizza and beverages in peace as the tweenagers have now moved back to O-Bar.
Great food and even better service. We got our pizza that wasnt exactly what we ordered, the waiter was extremely apologetic and offered us free drinks (which we declined.) We only waited 5-10 mins for a replacement pizza and again the waiter was genuinely apologetic - Thank you to Cargo pizza for a nice night and bigger thanks to the young waiter who made the night!
We dropped by for a pizza & wine & were very pleasantly surprised. Shared a supreme & it was amazing! Having just returned from Italy we have been disappointed with the pizzas since, but this one was delicious. The toppings were fresh & tasty. The base & crust was just how I love it. The fantastic thing is to be so close to the excitement and vibe in Salamanca.
Food and drinks were incredible. Pizza was amazing and one of the girls I was with said the cocktail she had was the best she's ever had. However 30 minutes and 2 different people going up to the bar to see where our 2 drinks were was ridiculous. Would have been understandable if they were busy but there was no one at the bar and 2 bartenders standing around.
HORRIBLE! ZERO STAR pizza- Usually a bad pizza is semi good, but this place is shocking. Waited 25min, cold, dry pizza- it tasted like a supermarket base.... lacking on all fronts, ill be sure to tell everyone i can & never again- two thumbs down...an another thumb down for the price $22 & $11 beer- $33 for a small sticking pizza and small beer
$12 for not even 30mls? yes licensee, healthy girl on check shirt with septum piercing and side shaved served me this at 1:20am, 12 Nov, 2023.. check the camera on main bar… asked her to top up & give a lime wedge.. she refused… so disappointed with whole hobart… come to sydney - we’ll show you what does hospitality means
Oh my god this was the best capriciosa I had in Australia! Finally artichokes <3 the mushrooms and olives were also super nice and the base was good. The crust looked a bit like a cookie but the middle was so delicious that it didn't matter. Ps. I ditched the ham as I don't like shredded ham - still a capriciosa though!
Okay pizza. Served cold. Ordered takeaway. Was told 40 minute wait. Staff took my mob number and told me they'd call when ready, but never called. After 50 minutes when I followed up. Staff EXPLAINED that it had just come out of the oven. Cheese was starting to harden so not pursuaded pizza was fresh. Disappointing.
I was really excited because they make their own gluten free crust, which would have been really good if it wasnt undercooked. Also they forgot the basil on the margarita, which really impacted the taste and experience. I'll be back because I can tell how good it could be. It was just disappointing today.
Pizza pretty poor, no love, no basil. Glass of red from bottle that was opened but not vacuumed to look after between days of no use. Certainly enjoy pizza kitchen with open aspect, but staff need to be extra careful of hygiene, in this restaurant better off not being on display. Expected better.
Great outdoor spot to watch views of the harbor and people watch. The food is also pretty good especially the different creative pizza options. We were pleasantly surprised by the flavors of the pulled pork tacos. Service was good and the staff were very helpful in making recommendations.
Very dissatisfied with staff, drink list should not exist, could not even get a glass cab sav. Every drink we requested was not available. Very long wait on food. Did not see any covid safe sign in either. We have been to cargo lots of times, but last night it was disgusting
If you like authentic and quality pizza then avoid this place. However if you like what looked and tasted like reheated coles frozen pizza then go for it, you won’t be disappointed.

We were out to dinner with our friends for dinner there omg the worst pizza i have tasted in my life it was discussing it tasted like they have put the toppings on and microwave it yuk. Very dissatisfied customer Linda Trajcevska Port Kembla New South Wales
For a late dinner with the family this was ideal. The toppings were great and the timing was prompt. But, the base seemed too hard and appeared to have a bit too much semolina. However, looking for a late dinner, in need of a refuel, this hit the spot.
One of many nice restaurants on the Salamanca strip. A few beers on tap including the Goose Island IPA, and some really good great tasting pizzas even though a tad pricey. Comfortable outdoor seating, not too loud for conversations, good atmosphere.
Ordered 2 cocktails which took them 25min to make.. Dirty glasses and plates everywhere. Staff walk past not even picking up the dirty dishes when walking from outside seating area to inside. These guys should not be in hospitality that's for sure.
Ridiculous wait time!!! Ordered cocktails from the menu, 30 minute wait!!! Went there also previously for pizza was advised a 40 minute delay, got pizzas after 1hour and 20 minutes. Would not recommend to anyone wanting to cure a thirst or hunger.
Nice atmosphere! Easy to find a cozy nook tucked away from the main bar. Staff were friendly and helpful with suggestions. Fantastic pizza selections in three reasonably priced categories. Good wine and cocktail choices, cocktails a little pricey.
Pizza is wood fired oven. Espresso Martini was coffee strong! Next door is a craft beer bar owned by the same owner so you can grab beers and bring them back here. Was very quite but it was a 8pm Monday night, so I'd love to see it on a Saturday!
$22.00 for two cans of mountain goat beer... I didn't realise that this product was so rare. Good thing the bar tender never opened the thing so I can sell it on. Next time instead of paying cargo a visit I might just punch myself in the dick.
Stumbled across this place while looking for somewhere for lunch. Awesome pizza. Vegetarian was very tasty. Bbq chicken pizza very nice, chicken very fresh, not dry. Best thing of all it's half price on Sunday. Can't rate it high enough …
My family had a poor dining experience. We had to wait over 40 minutes for our pizza order. When we asked what was the delay, we were advised that we were behind a large order. That would have been fine if we had been told of the wait time.
They kept the kitchen open for us after hours. Very grateful as we were hungry for our first night in Hobart! The pizzas were delicious, especially their pesto. All tasted very fresh. Thanks again guys for great, friendly service!
The bar staff, Lara, was so accomadating and professional, it actually made my night there a pleasure. !!! The DJ was awesome, however I can dance to anything. No offense. I look forward to coming there again. Love Doc …
Cargo used to be a go to venue on Salamanca Place, not any more. Where the pizzas were once pretty special on real dough bases, now they are factory made . The space is run down, tired and grubby, time to remake or remove.
Do not be lured in by the cheap cocktails... They're not worth it and the wait is actually really long. Our experience of using the app was a 45 minute wait just for a drink. If you're getting cocktails go up to the bar.
Came here for dinner pretty late as it was super close to our hotel. We had no expectations but everything that was served to the 7 of us was really good. I'm fussy with Pizzas but they did really well. Would go again
The large pizza was small, and much too salty and oily. We ordered the arancini balls - paid $16 and only got three. The pizzas were missing several ingredients listed on the menu. Would prefer a supermarket pizza.
Fairly overrated. Pizzas take a good hour or so even on a night that isn't terribly busy. If you want a good pizza go to La'Venezia and save yourself the Salamanca tax. Cocktails are nice, but the usual price.
Beautiful place in Salamanca, inside and outside dining, the staff were amazing, it was a highlight of our day trip to Hobart, we left the taste of Tasmania to come here and we're very glad we did.
Pizzas are consistently good, however, the wait can be quite long. We enjoyed the duck pizza immensely. The staff member at the door was a little exuberant in his salesmanly welcome to the venue.
Do not call yourself a Pizza Lounge with pre made, very average pizza bases. The food was just sad and disappointing. Great looking place for a drink with friends, just don’t go there to eat.
Great for sitting outside with a beer or wine (maybe pizza too) watching people. It's self serve and the outdoor is shared with Jack Greene next door (which has more beers on tap than Cargo).
Always enjoyable relaxed atmosphere to chill with friends/family for great pizza & celebration night! Book a chilled lounge area for your get together, divide the bill & enjoy! …
Pizza was a bit fatty and not as crispy as I would like it but otherwise it was good. Only other complaint would be the waitress didn't clear the table from the previous people's drinks.
Over priced. I just don't think their pizza was worth the money and long wait. The waitress assured us they made the dough fresh but it just wasn't that great and under cooked.
Unfortunately a poor experience. Long wait for soggy pizza. After I ordered I was told 35 min wait. Would have been good to know that in advance. Probably would not return.
Fantastic for meals and drinks. Bookings essential for a table on weekends. Extremel ybusy, a little overcrowded but great atmosphere. Local ciders complement the meals.
poor customer service, the workers (3 of them) tried to avoid us and not take our order. The coffee does not taste great but on the good side the ice cream is great.
Fantastic food and surprisingly quiet atmosphere. Not my first visit for good food and definitely won't be the last. I recommend the smoked chicken pizza and wedges.
Good value when pizza is half price. They put huge pieces of chicken on the chicken pizzas which is yummy but surprsing since pizza toppings are usually more flat
Fantastic location in Salamanca. Staff were super friendly, prices very reasonable and the smoked chicken pizza is seriously one of the best pizzas I've ever had.
Great service! Very helpful and friendly staff. Tandoori chicken and pulled pork pizza was yummy. It’s not too crowded and noisy so great for families as well
The duck pizza is great but the Hawaiian is average. I am expecting more flavours on the Hawaiian pizza as the price is similar to other pizza in the menu.
Unremarkable pizzas, lots of far superior ones other places around Hobart. Good outside seating. Can generally find a table at lunch without a booking.
Worthy pizza. Reasonable price with good bar. Not very busy in Sunday and the pizzas are half price as well! Good place for casual night out!
Quick service, friendly polite staff, great pizzas! There's a reason Cargo has been here for a decade while other bars have come and gone.
Went with a group. We ordered the dip platter and the cheese board. Both great variety and very tasty. Staff were friendly and polite.
What a cesspit! If you're taking food out to customers why not bring in the previous customers dirty plates from that same table?
Don't use the QR code. Drinks weren't served, pizza came out cold, inexperienced staff. Very disappointing. Won't be coming back
We had AMAZING gluten free pizzas and a bottle of wine for the Monday night special. They were absolutely delicious!
It was dirty and smelly. I loved this place 6 yrs ago but it has really gone down hill.
Great pizza and salad... Fast and friendly service. Highly recommend!
Really fantastic food, pulled pork pizza and tacos were delicious
The pizza here was so good, super good service and great prices
