My favourite bookshop that I've been to in a while. Very large selection, both new & used. Used books are priced very well, there is even a 1$ book section and free pamphlets/booklets on offer. I found an old textbook of topographical maps of Europe, with tons of notes in the margins, which I love! The new books are great as well, a very good fantasy, comic book and horror selection grabbed my attention the most, it was a delight looking through them. I got a book I was meaning to get for a while, and found something new that I'm very excited to have. The staff was also very friendly and good music was playing. Absolutely would recommend, and I will visit again when I'm in Hobart.

The free Wifi is too slow, no coffee, no food and sadly no children's storybook reading area is available. They do not have "Song of Stone" in stock (even though it's listed as available on Amazon), new and second-hand books are all jumbled together, they refuse to hold books for more than a week (unless you're a regular, then one year onwards is np), all of the good stuff get's sold on fb before it hits the shelves and the owners are permanently rude and grumpy. That about covers it....Cracked & Spineless is Australia's best book shop.

Easily my favourite bookshop. Mike and his son are friendly and knowing me well often have a suggestion for a book I might consider buying. Nearly always worth buying, too. I used to give my money pretty evenly to Fullers, Ellison Hawker and The Imperial (as it was called before Mike Gray purchased the business from Ian). Damon Hawker's shop closed and Fullers made me feel most unwelcome when I was there last. Despite my difficulty climbing the stair now that I'm a cripple, it's the only bookshop worth going to for me.

No wheel chair access or friendly customer service. I walked 30 cm directly in front of the gentleman store keepers and was ignored. Not even a greeting. When I went to ask a question not even a smile in response. I have worked in the customer service industry for 11 years and have never seen that before. I can keep a smile on my face even if I a migraine but these staff clearly didn't care about a bad impression. I understand that everyone has bad days but I won't be returning to there store again.

This bookstore was heaven! We had to search for it, but I’m so glad we did. I HIGHLY recommend coming here. I will confidently say this is my favourite bookstore ever. The help I got from owner was amazing, I walked in asking for a horror recommendation and I could’ve easily spent and hour talking with him about his favourites. He even has stick insects on his counter. Honestly I’m still in awe. I will make sure I visit this store every time I come down to Tassie.

Excellent. The guy in there is really angry all the time. He loves it. He has a weird gay thing for that Neil Gaiman guy I think. I also think he lives in the store at night when the lights are off and its closed. I think he makes forts out of the books and sucks the moisture & bodily fluids out of the ceiling plaster from the backpackers above, to survive. And sits in his book fort and sings Du Hast by Rammstein until the store opens again the next day.

This is the best bookshop I've come across in some time. I'm new to Hobart and was so happy to find this little gem of a bookshop. Excellent titles, rabbit warren layout to find those hidden treasures but also enough room to move. The seconds are mixed with the new books which is unique and the people running the store have character and aren't pretentious. Will be going back again and again and again I'm sure.

This is a gem of a shop in a world filled with sand... and trust me, you'll be digging through the shelves for hours! A great combination of new and used, living harmoniously side by side. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, and an unassuming atmosphere that is both historic and present all at once. Bring a friend and be prepared to lose each other while you hunt for today's perfect title!

The best bookshop in Hobart. Mike has unsurpassed knowledge of Tasmanian books and books in general. Richard is up with everything SciFi, Fantasy and generally quirky. Masses of second hand bargains including rare and unusual. All the latest best sellers. They will source anything you want. Hours of browsing, atmosphere and intelligent conversation

A very cramped and claustrophobic store. There are millions of books put together willy nilly. It would would very hard to find a book fast and conveniently . However if you are willing to spend a day looking for treasures you may find success. Finding a book in this store is like panning for gold . You need amazing luck and to be super patience.

been here a couple of times now and every time they have had what we needed. it’s nice that they sell both new and used books. if you’re looking for a specific genre youre likely to find something used but something more specific might need to be new. they were helpful when we called ahead to see what they had. nice people!

Love this bookshop!! Disappointed I didn’t have time to peruse longer nor the space in my luggage to buy lots of books. They have an excellent collection of new and old books mingled together. Great range of books on Tasmanian history which is a must for anyone interested in Tasmanian heritage!!

  • Isabella von Lichtan

Such a great bookshop for both new and secondhand books, and I can confidently say it is my favourite! It is worth the travel from Endor to check it out. The only downside is that they don't take Imperial Credits, but thankfully you can convert them to Australian Dollars down the road. 5 stars!

Richard is perfect when it comes to helping find something, especially when you're not completely sure about which book you're looking for. Very friendly and incredibly well priced - forget about all the other book shops, Cracked and Spineless is the only one to visit.

  • Greg Downes

The place is like a book wonderland. Shelves are full and piles of books lie everywhere. Richard is great and will select books for you. Great range of new and used fantasy and sci fi books. Facebook page is awesome too, check it out.

  • sjw998

Such a wicked bookshop! The owner knows his stuff and has some great suggestions. I devoured every book suggested within days of visiting. Kinda wishing I was a local now just so I could get my horror fiction fix regularly from here.

  • Macca Green

A bookshop unlike any you've visited. Ask for anything, and they'll probably be able to get it, but do expect to be heckled for your choices. Ask them to recommend something weird, you won't be disappointed. A real life Black Books.

  • Lara Vincent

I literally refuse to buy my books elsewhere. The owners remember you, and know what to suggest for you. Great price range for the casual readers and wonderful surprises for the collector. These guys need to be more well known.

  • Dark Mark

Just visited Cracked and Spineless in the heart of Hobart. Hidden away in an unassuming little arcade it is a treasure trove of new and second hand fiction with a horror section to die for. Picked out a few treasures …

  • Joanna Webb

Best book shop EVER! Nice mix of new and second hand. Quirky shop with interesting corners and books everywhere, just what a book shop should be. Awesome range too, popular and hard to find, all in one place.

  • Jenny Cook

A lovely bookshop tucked away in an arcade. Small, yet well stocked with a variety of genres to browse. Very helpful staff and found a much loved series, James Herriot's books at incredibly reasonable prices.

  • El Greco

A great mix of used and new books. I picked up a few hard to find crime fiction titles and had a nice chat with the sales guy who knew his stuff and recommended some writers I'd not heard of. I'll be back.

  • Rom DC

Good collection of used and new books. Books are arranged well but it doesnt feel like a shop. It feels like stepping into a real bibliophile’s personal library where books are arranged naturally.

  • Claire O'Beirne

Richard is great- anything you need for your weird and quirky book requests, plus the newer stuff, he's your man. Have always loved this place and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone

  • Bruce Urquhart

Great service , friendly helpful and knowledgeable with all types of books , incredible range . I live in Queensland and buy all my books through this incredible store …

  • Lyndon Northeast

Awesome bookshop with a great selection of reasonably priced second-hand books as well as new titles. The owner has consistently pointed me to great and worthy reads.

  • Cindy Bennett

Brilliant book shop for used and new books. Message Richard to see if he has the book you want, or just wander in and get lost in booklover's heaven.

  • James Rainey

Have never been to the store but have rang and spoke, always helpful and friendly, with a fantastic selection of books at more then fair prices....

  • Clare Vivarelli

It's exactly what you want from a second hand book store. A range of books, reasonable prices, lovely staff and the atmosphere is spot on.

  • Phips Vered

Wow, what a great find. Old and new books o subjects that you do not find in regular bookstores. This bookstore is for book lovers!

  • Julia K Knight

An eclectic mix of books, a business that embraces social media, an owner who will seek out your requests...what's not to like!

  • Jane R

Worth a browse (if only for the music that might be playing in store) lots of second-hand, new and specialised books.

  • David Vonk

A great book shop with friendly and knowledgeable staff and an excellent selection of books. Well worth a visit.
