Member for 2.5 years. Great classes and very nice staff. I am writing this to go over some of the complaints I have read below. 1: the locker rooms: this is a landmark building. They cannot tear down walls or significantly change the design of the building. Just to make plumbing repairs to the locker rooms took months of waiting for permits to go through. Perk: bath towels are big and fluffy! 2: equipment: they have a bit of everything. Yes, it gets crowded during peak hours. So does every gym in the city. Also, if someone is using a piece of weight equipment that you are interested in, politely ask if you can work in with them. 3: staff: always pleasant, even when I have seen members be a pain. Classes do fill up...you can sign up on line. Don't complain at the desk if you arrive 5 minutes before a class, and don't get a spot. 4: trainers: yes, if you are 'fresh meat', they can be a little aggressive (in a nice way) because, it's their job. Do use the introductory session to get some tips. If you are in your 30's and you are doing the same stuff that you did in College, it might be time for a change. And guys, please train your legs once in a while. To me there is nothing weirder than a buff upper body and two sticks for legs. All in all, I have been very happy.
I find this gym concerned only with making money and will try to squeeze every penny irrespective of whether the gym is closed due to pandemic or you have training sessions that your trainer convinced you to buy but disappeared on you or if you have an injury and need a break from membership. Very inflexible. They were not willing to refund training credits bought just before pandemic. Past two years have shown us unforeseen circumstances but this gym is unwilling to budge. They try to hide behind the idea that the training credits are bought with the gym and not the instructor but then it should be the gym selling you those…not your instructor. They continued to charge my credit cards for few pandemic months and asked for proof of trying to contact them when there was actually nobody at the gym to answer those calls during pandemic. When you go to the gym to try and talk to the management nicely, they just shoo you away. Even before the pandemic, I found the yoga class to be too crowded and the one of the yoga instructors was creepy.
I recently switched from the Union St location to this Polk St location and loving it so far! The gym is clean, open, and fun (considering it’s an old movie theatre and they play movies on a big projector screen). Around Halloween this year they played scary movies constantly and it made for such a fun atmosphere while working out. Not to mention the architecture of the old theatre is beautiful and still intact. They are also strictly following COVID CDC and Crunch HQ guidelines so it feels very safe. I asked a front desk worker to ask two members to wear their masks properly and he did so promptly and kindly. It made working out there a safe experience during a very serious global pandemic. There are cleaning stations everywhere and multiple staff cleaning constantly. I highly recommend this Crunch location! Not to mention there are plenty of coffee places nearby to grab a pick-me-up cup after a morning workout.
I was a member here for 5 months, and had a terrible experience. Firstly, after you are a member, they hit you with so many hidden charges, you have to literally chase them about what these charges are and why they weren't mentioned to you earlier. They literally charged me facility fees after I cancelled my membership. I tried to talk to the manager, but he refused a refund. So I asked if I could continue my membership for the year, as it was paid for, but they did not agree. They literally asked me to restart my membership and pay all the fees all over again. I literally felt unsafe having my credit card on their file. Secondly, more often than not I have had really bad customer service, they are mean or just fail to reply to your emails. The manager is quite mean.
A) Months for Crunch to acknowledge a cancellation request.(many, MANY emails and calls required over the last five months in order to cancel) B)Crunch refusal to refund an unused training package they were unable to honor due to closure from mid-March to Mid-September. They are still arguing I am a member and that the package is on "my account" ? Update on Feb 2021 C) still ongoing ! We are looking at months! Had to open a claim on my credit card. Review pending - case to be closed at the end of the months Crunch statement to my credit card: “ they never heard from me” Sighs My situation is far from being an exception- check other reviews. Update 04/2021: Credit card dispute closed in my favor. Was refunded fully. Took some dedication !
I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Crunch Fitness. I froze my membership in October 2020 due to Covid and the limited services being offered. This freeze was confirmed by a Crunch employee. They later closed the gym and when they reopened again in March, they unfroze my membership without informing me. I showed them the confirmation email that my account was frozen, but they refuse to honor it. I am still trying to get reimbursed for this charge. Crunch Fitness is extremely disorganized and does not want to admit to its billing mistake. I would recommend you go to another gym that honors its promises and does not take advantage of members during the Covid situation.
Been using crunch over the last few weeks and I’ve enjoyed it so far. It’s one of the most unique places I’ve ever worked out. Just being in the theatre brings another element to your routine gym experience. Membership cost aren’t crazy expensive, compared to other places around SF. You’re looking at $90 to $150 per month, depending on their current specials. It can get a little cramped in the free weights area. Peak hours can also feel a little overwhelming too. But I do like the amount of running equipment upstairs. The towels and routine cleaning of the equipment is a plus as well. Overall, give Crunch a try if you’re looking for a gym home and some theatre nostalgia!
I started working out here a little over a month ago, and I go on Saturdays & Sundays. The weights / strength equipment is a little lacking in a few areas, and it's slightly cramped, but that's expected in downtown SF. What really stands out about this place is the atmosphere -- the interior still looks like an old theatre, complete with high, ornate ceilings, mood lighting, etc. Cardio equipment is up on the balcony level, overlooking the group fitness classes, with a movie always playing on the screen. All in all it makes for a great workout environment, in a great location.
living in the marina, I think I prefer to walk a little further to this location rather than go to the closer spots on chestnut and union streets. The main reason is because it is a lot larger, offers more free weights, more equipment and more benches. For the ladies, there are a ton of cardio machines at your disposal. Also the main "stage" area of the gym is set up for classes. there is also a spin room too. another plus: there is a small ice cream shop located right next door to reward yourself for going through the effort of putting on those lulus and breaking a sweat.
Attempted to bill me for an annual charge despite informing me that my account was on pause and despite the fact that I have not even been allowed into the premises for working out at all in the new year. Was told that I would get referral credits for two people that I referred, and then when I asked about them, they said it was just a favor that they don't do anymore. Truly disappointing, and would encourage patrons to avoid this location and the management's misleading business practices.
I've been a member here for over a year. I personally feel like I'm overpaying to be a member here (and I have the cheapest membership out of anyone I know), but it does the job and has a decent selection of classes. I love that they provide towels although I don't think I'd ever go so far as to shower here. If you're looking for a good class, check out the TRX classes on Monday and Tuesday night. They are great 45 minute workouts that will leave you sweating!
Not your typical gym interior, this one is housed inside an old movie theater with gilded ceiling and columns. Update: After half a year here I just didn’t jive with the place. The management could care less about you. Also, there is no natural light inside here - I really hated it after awhile. Plus if you’re there between 4-8 pm they blast the class music so loud throughout the whole gym your bones are rattling. It gave me such a headache.
I've been a member here for years, and its one of my favorite places to work out ever. The staff is super friendly, the equipment is well maintained, there are plenty of great classes to choose from. I worked with a PT, James, who helped me build strength after an injury, best investment with awesome results. And they show some kick a** movies on the big screen for those rainy days when I do cardio indoors on an eliptical or treadmill.
Not a huge gym, but big enough to have a good variety of machines and free weights. Majority of machines are hammer strength and I believe some life fitness - high quality, modern equipment. Place is clean, not too crowded. Good neighborhood gym to get a solid workout in. Due to the setting in an old movie theater, this place has some character and doesn't feel like a generic chain. Awesome staff at front desk.
Many elipticals are alway not running well. Maybe 2 work fine . Also I see 1 person going around cleaning and towels. But see 3 to 4 sales reps. Not a good look for the gym. Imagine if they gave 10 % of there tim to help out with towels or helping the cleaning crew would be very welcome. I'm looking for more team work to make to gym better. Then it will be a 4 star.
The gym is nice, but lately it has been really run down. The cardio bikes and treadmills have a few broken each time and the big movie screen cannot play sports anymore (not sure why, it only does movies now). October is sports month and its great to watch the game (NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA) and get cardio in but both are sub par now and have been for a month or two.
This gym is awesome. The staff is super friendly and remembers your name, the equipment is always kept clean and operational. The space itself is amazing as it is an old theatre so working out in a huge open space feels really cool. Also they have a ton of different classes that members can take for free which are all very intense.
Ok gym; friendly(ish) staff; extremely entitled crowd. Weight floor is entirely too small and cramped while the aerobic area sits empty most of the time. The (immovable) benches are several inches taller than virtually any other I’ve used, making it impossible to brace your feet into the ground for chest exercises.
Nice it look like theater for whoever like to see a movie while they are workin out at same time might love it .It is clean but, pretty small for wherever I really like it .They don't have one specific area that i really like to workouts and i didn't see anything like sauna and steam rooms.
It's a gym. It gets super busy after work on weekdays, but if you can come during off-hours it's a lot more pleasant. Satisfied with my experience with personal trainers here. The main drawback is that it's a bit pricey -- although by San Francisco standards it's actually quite reasonable.
Clean gym, everyone re-racks weights and wipes down equipment. Really like the downstairs turf area with squat racks and monkey bars. It’s a bit small and gets cramped in peak hours but that’s life in SF. Movie theater vibe is a bonus and it’s nice to watch some classics between sets.
You can’t cancel the membership here, and get hit with load of random fees. Looked for 30 mins on how to cancel it, and you have to submit a support request and wait for them to approve it before you can cancel (this is hidden super deep in the site). Friends have had the same issues.
This gym is ok except there is no air conditioning and there are spotlights pointed at most machines. It’s like working out in the summer with the sun beating down on you. Maybe some of the staff can try doing cardio at this gym and see how uncomfortable it is.
Space is a bit tight but everyone is very friendly. There are about 3 levels where you can workout at this Crunch Gym and they always have a movie playing since it's in an old theater. Interior is pretty much kept the same way so I think it's a unique gym.
I loved this. Easily one of my favorite gyms. The machines were basic. But the atmosphere was fantastic! It was so cool working out in a theater! I wish they had more mirrors. However it was super clean and the workers there were so nice! Highly recommend
One of the coolest gyms I’ve ever visited! Love that they preserved the history of the building, while still transforming it into a great place to work out. It was very clean, had friendly staff, and contained all the equipment you need. 10/10 recommend
I recently switched to Crunch earlier this year and highly recommend Crunch for all of your fitness needs. They did a great job with the remodel. The gym is spacious, has a variety of equipment, and includes group classes, all for a great value.
Really cool gym - they have several options for short term membership / day passes, which was very convenient as I was traveling through SF. The guy at the counter with the long hair was super nice too - the great service was much appreciated!
Kicked me out at 8:00pm on the dot on Sunday. Restrictive hours and gym was fairly busy on unpopular workout times. Good selection of weights/machines though. Updating to four stars since they apparently now have 5 squat racks, which is cool.
This gym is clean, fairly priced, and has good hours. I workout in the mornings around 8a and never have trouble getting on weights. Though at many other times it's packed. Great location in Russian Hill and beautiful building inside and out
Whoever made this happen needs a raise. A vibe of a gym. I’ve been to the Yerba Buena & Chestnut St locations - they don’t compare to this location, feels like a different brand. Really great atmosphere. Favorite gym I’ve been to recently.
Not the nicest gym in SF, but you get what you pay for. The locker rooms are nothing to brag about, nor are they a place where more than 5 people can change. The classes are good with good instructors. Staff is very friendly.
Way too crowded, not enough machines, changing rooms way too small. They're a bit hamstrung by the layout of the building, which is cool, but doesn't make for a very usable gym during anything but totally off hours.
I switched over to Crunch earlier this year and highly recommend it for all your fitness needs. They did a great job with the remodel. Plenty of space, variety of equipment, and group classes all for a great value.
Absolutely awesome spot! Located in an old theater with awesome decor. Has the most squat racks and deadlift platforms I have seen of any Crunch, with an ample sledding area. Will be back here as much as possible.
Unlike other crunch locations in the city which have an amazing uplifting culture, this one is full of the kind of pompous, entitled, rude clientele I’d grown tired of dealing with at Equinox and Fitness SF.
Really cool gym, clean and maintained. I like that movies are always playing. It has everything you need. Dumbbells up to 100. Plenty of plates and kettlebells. Can get busy, but what gym doesn't.
Crunch fitness in Polk street is an amazing gym! This crunch fitness branch was astonishing with their clean space, quality and quantity of the equipment and of course their friendly staff!
This is a very cool gym to work out in. It is ornately decorated. There’s a big movie screen so you can watch a movie while you exercise. Lots of great fitness class options too.
Cheap membership and convenient location but very lacking in strength training equipment. Limited areas for deadlifting, 1 squat rack and 1 flat bench = long waits in peak hours.
This is my favorite Crunch gym in SF. The gym is spacious, has plenty of machines, and the classes are great! Even though it gets crowded it doesn't feel stuffy or dirty.
Great Gym but I really dislike that the music they play in the gym is so loud that it’s hard for me to hear my own music even through my earbuds. Otherwise great place.
Gym is great and staff is very friendly. It's a little dim, but you get to watch a big projector from the top floors. Lots of machines and wasn't too busy when I went.
Great gym in every way, but the water fountain needs an update. The water pressure is so low you are practically making out with the faucet just to drink some water
I really like the set up, however, I’d like to have more lights! For me it is bit dark. Apart from that always is empty, rarely I have had to wait for a machine !
Class schedule pretty weak compared to other gyms in the area. Pretty interior, but the woman's locker room is tiny (no idea whether that holds for the men's).
Crunch is a great gym in SF--nice staff, great classes, and this location used to be movie theatre so you can watch movies while you work out on the machines.
Cheap but the gym is usually packed and you're unable to get to many of the weight machines or so crowded that you're constantly bumping into others for space
As a crunch member I was asked for my personal medical information in order to enter to work out. Dirty area with many homeless and car break ins.
Big gym, friendly staff. Majority of the classes are not good (meaning poor instructors and routine is bad and they don't correct bad form).
Nice place to work out! This building is really nice on the outside (historical). Odd place for a gym but I suppose space is limited in SF.
Working out here whilst doing a semester abroad, and absolutely loved it. Wonderful staff and great facilities. Would recommend …
Amazing gym, especially given their square footage. Can be crowded during peak hours, but folks are focused and work around each other
This gym is really cool. Very nice vibe and all the equipment is really nice. I always have a great time while I'm working out here.
Went here for my month visiting San Francisco. I went most days at 6am. Not overly crowded at that time. Great atmosphere.
Onboarding process was super easy (thanks Fernando!!), the gym is quirky and beautiful, and geographically well-situated.
Very cool and unique gym with great equipment and a nice setup. Definitely has a renaissance feel to the atmosphere.
Crunch is a great place to work out, the Alhambra location is cool one of the most interesting places to work out.
It's an interesting location of crunch. Small yet it has what's needed to get your workout and training done
Working out in a former movie theater is simply cool. The ceiling is jaw droppingly beautiful.
Very cool ambience. Equipment is a bit old, but overall a unique place to get a workout in.
Could not cancel membership! Be aware when you signed up. They have so many hidden fees!
Awesome facility with a beautiful ceiling! They have everything, even pole dance!!
Super Gym, sehr freundlich und gut ausgestattet. Hatten ein Top Training.
Amazing facility, amazing staff/trainers, and excellent equipment.
Great gym for what it is. It can get a little crowded at times.
Take forever..30 minutes for only 4 piece ...never coming back
Really cool set up and atmosphere but almost always crowded
Clean, good location. Friendly staff. Overall it's a win.
Gym is great, old theater is cool, and Kevin was great!
Friendly , helpful and members are relaxed and kind...
Bunch of problems if you want cancel your membership
All they need are larger bathrooms/lockerooms
Great gym, friendly people, Kevin is the man
Great gym and Kevin is an awesome manager
Great neighborhood gym! No judgement!
Great place to do nice workouts
Best ambience for a gym in SF.
Very cool venue for a gym!
Nice place, but very dirty
Best gym location ever.
Closes too damn early.
