I ten out of ten recommend Cully Strength to anyone interested in lifting heavy, staying safe and feeling welcome. I first attended a class at CSP in June 2018 after taking a hiatus from fitness and nutrition for over 2 years. In the beginning my goals were simply to learn the fundamentals of weightlifting and incorporate strength training into my fitness routine. Nine months later I can say this gym has offered me this and so much more. Before my first class at CSP and first meeting Head Coach Joey Cole I'd never lifted a bar before in my entire life. I'd just moved from out of state and was looking to try something new. The atmosphere was welcoming yet focused and I was given the attention needed as a novice lifter needed to learn the movements using proper form. The classes are small (8 people or less) which allows for individualization of workouts and greater opportunities for coaching support. The environment allows for a great sense of community and unforeseen camaraderie to emerge which further aides in personal accountability. Thanks to this gym I have fallen in love with fitness again. I've not only met the goals I originally set out, but I've surpassed them and find myself continually establishing new ones. I feel myself getting stronger and more confident every day since joining. I find myself using the skills and tools I've learned through CSP in other areas of my life and have even expanded my fitness routine as a result. Going to the gym has become fun again for me and I really couldn't ask for anything more awesome than that. Come check it out!
I've been seeing Joey at Cully Strength for 5 months and I could not be happier. I've done the personal trainer before it was OK, people noticed the changes but I didn't see the transformation or feel as good as I do training with Joey. I was turned off for a long time due to the bad experience of a personal trainer and Joey is different - he really cares about your goals and puts together a routine that works for you, he pays close attention to form to ensure you are safe. What does that all really mean, I have never done a lifting only routine and he makes sure my squat form is perfect so I can keep seeing the gains I want and he does it in a non-trainer form like working out with a great friend that has the knowledge and technique for success. I just returned from a large work meeting and everyone asked what are you doing - you've lost weight and look great. Well thank you Joey - while I don't really care what others think I really did it for myself it doesn't hurt to hear the compliments. Give Joey a call, he's super approachable and will help you meet the goals whatever they are and he changes and adopts are your needs and aspirations do - we are talking about diet now along with training. Quick plug for Mike as well, I've done some sessions with him - super guy that will encourage you and guide you to your goals.
Small classes that meet on a regular schedule - mine is two evenings a week - means I've had the chance to build relationships with both coaches and the other athletes in the class. Classes are an hour and typically include a sizeable strength component in addition to a warmup and some conditioning and/or mobility work. They're indoor in a pretty enormous, well-ventilated space. It's not freezing like some outdoor classes which is a huge plus for me. Each person in class works on their own rack. I get tons of personalized coaching because of the small class size, which means I feel safe lifting more weight because I know someone has eyes on my form. Goals are personalized too - you'll work with coaches to figure out your max weight for a couple lifts - I'm working on squats, deadlifts, overhead press, and bench press - then each week you'll use an app to determine the percentage of your max to lift in a way that's optimized to build up your strength. My husband lifts here too and he can lift a ton more than I can but we both feel challenged every class. I highly recommend to folks who want to get into lifting for the first time or maybe get back into it after some time off. I've been so stoked on my gains and how strong I feel after a few months working out at Cully Strength.
Strongly recommend the Cully Strength Project and head coach Joey! It's a great atmosphere with friendly and inviting people. I've tried many different gyms from crossfit gyms to the $15 a month 24hrs gyms. To me Cully Strength Project is the best mix of the weightlifting, cardio, personal training, and team dynamics. Joey's workouts are set up to feel like you're all team and at the same time have your customized plan. Classes never have more than 8-10 people so you get a lot of individual attention every time. It's most similar to crossfit without the ultra competitive environment. Every individual is working towards their own goals and Joey really takes the time to learn what those goals are and how hard to push you towards those goals. He also places a great emphasis on helping everyone learn proper technique so there's never a danger of injury as you push and the weights get heavier. Most of all, I love that my fiancé and I can go to the same gym and feel equally satisfied. She's very new to weightlifting and I've trained as a former college athlete. Despite this difference, we go to class together and both leave having learned something new, improved a technique or two, made gains and most importantly our bodies know we just had a good workout!
I am absolutely loving my experience working out at Cully Strength, and am so grateful to Joey and Mike for their supportive guidance. Prior to working out at Cully Strength, My previous experiences were at different small group training programs, doing a lot of kettlebells and HIIT workouts, and most of my teachers in the past were women. So I wasn't really sure what to expect when I joined Cully, because I had had a few weird experiences with male instructors in the past and generally felt better in women dominant environments where it didn't feel overwhelmed with testosterone. But they have done an amazing job being extremely welcoming and supportive to women at various different skill levels. And I am really happy to see that there are always new people that are coming in that are beginner level and they are being held and cared for with a lot of supportive guidance, and we are absolutely being pushed to expand beyond our self-perceived strength limits. I feel like my body is going to have a real breakthrough here. And I'm honestly so stoked to be working out using these squat racks. It's very different from what I have used in the past where I was predominantly using kettlebells, but I feel like my body is really responding to it.
As a relatively new Portlander finding a gym in my new hometown was at the top of my list upon arrival, I found that very quickly with Cully Strength. Joey is an excellent head coach and business owner. He’s very knowledgeable, thoughtful about the gym’s programming, and clearly very caring about his clients. Like many, I’ve run the gamut on finding a workout program that I can stick to and will show up for repeatedly (even at 6am). In the past that was crossfit, but as I’ve ventured into my mid-30s I’ve found that I really love the barbell work and not-so-much the, what became for me, anxiety inducing WODs. Cully Strength focuses on strength work first, I get to throw some barbells around and then we all get tricked into some HIIT work after, it’s stuff I wouldn’t make myself do and for that, I’m thankful to Joey. Oh and the class sizes are amazing, it’s small group work, everyone else working out there is super awesome and chill. It’s an ideal environment, one that’s made me physically stronger and leaner, gotten me back to focusing on healthy eating outside of the gym which has combined to do wonders for my mental health, quality of life and overall happiness.
Cully Strength is amazing, plain and simple! I had been searching for a place like this for years and I am so happy to finally have a go-to training gym. I’ve been training at Cully Strength now since July 2021 (18 months) and the progress and gains I’ve made have felt wonderful. I have more energy day-to-day and all kinds of physical activities feel easier to do. My overall strength has improved, and so has my endurance. Once upon a time I had a lot of nervousness about the gym because I’m queer and I didn’t know how to lift with the proper form to avoid injuries. Cully Strength is an inclusive space focused on sustainable growth & safe form. My gym nerves are pretty much gone now. I’ve trained with coaches Joey, Julia, and Mike here, and all of them are phenomenal: knowledgable, encouraging, positive, and no-nonsense. Not only have I learned an enormous amount about fitness and strength & conditioning training, but I’ve also felt part of a community. I highly, highly recommend Cully Strength, it’s worth every single penny and I’m so glad I found it! It also feels great to support a local business instead of a chain.
I joined this amazing gym last January and I have to say, it's been one of the best decisions I've ever made for my fitness journey and my career. The owner is a warmhearted and equitable leader, and has helped me to grow as a coach. Not only are my coworkers incredibly knowledgeable, but they are also incredibly fun to work with. They create a positive and welcoming environment that makes me excited to come back to the gym every day. I always leave each day feeling motivated and inspired to be a better coach and athlete myself. The facilities are top-notch, with plenty of space to work out comfortably. The gym is always clean and well-maintained, which is a testament to the staff's attention to detail and dedication to providing the best experience possible for their members. I came across Cully Strength looking for something that was conveniently located to my home and feel like I’ve won the gym lottery. Coach Joey has a super great thing going. The classes are smaller in size so I feel like I get lots of great coaching and form checking while working on strength work. Joey is incredibly knowledgeable about lifting and has been profoundly helpful as I’ve dialed in my form with powerlifting. He’s positive, patient, laid back and has a great sense of humor. I like the smaller classes and community feel of the classes. The gym goers are all shapes and sizes, and it feels like a supportive and non-intimidating environment. I appreciate that Joey introduces everyone who is unfamiliar with each other to promote a team environment and a sense of community. I genuinely enjoy coming to each class and have appreciated how much I’ve grown as an athlete since training here. If you are looking for a gym that is inclusive, chill and has good people, I would highly recommend Cully Strength.
Cully Strength Project is the "Goldilocks" of fitness programs. Like most ex-athletes, I've bounced from gyms to group fitness classes and even gave cross-fit a try (twice), but nothing seemed to fit my fitness goals. Cully strength is a weight lifting based group fitness gym for grownups. No cult-like devotion required, but you can certainly push it there if you're so inclined. Joey is knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about each and every one of us. The workouts, while in a group setting, are tailored to each individual and you leave each session feeling a little bit closer to your specific goals. I joined up last year to get in shape for my wedding, and Joey helped me lose 20+ lbs in a healthy, gradual manner. If you've ever been curious about weight lifting, but cross-fit and big box gyms seem intimidating or not really your scene, drop in and give Cully Strength a try.
This is the perfect sized gym to learn how to weight lift and also get in a high intensity work out. I started here over two years ago and I continue to see improvement in my fitness. I’m 51 and had no previous weightlifting experience. Joey is excellent at demonstrating proper lifting technique and has designed a program that changes weekly so your strength steadily improves. He also has periodic fitness tests like burpee/thrusters challenges, kettle bell tests, mile runs, and maximum lifts. I am a real believer now in the benefits of strength training to help improve posture as well as improve performance in other sports. Working out in small groups pushes me to work out harder, it motivates me to show up and it is more fun.
Before discovering Cully Strength, I never thought of myself as a gym person. Over many years, I'd tried several gyms, but never felt welcome or comfortable. All that changed after the first time I walked into the Cully Strength gym. The head trainer and proprietor, Joey, was very welcoming as were the other clients training beside me. I didn't have any idea what to do in the gym, but Joey provided clear instruction and encouragement. After being a member of Cully Strength for a few months, I look forward to gym days--not only the workouts but being part of the CS community. My first day of skiing on Mount Hood this year was a lot more fun as I felt more physically prepared. I'm hooked!
Cully Strength is the best gym I’ve ever been a member at. I’ve tried many gyms out over the years, but none had the community aspect, the welcoming feel and the small group classes like Cully Strength does. Joey’s laid back and encouraging demeanor makes for a great gym atmosphere. Now that we’re in the new location, there are so many possibilities ahead for workouts with all the space and equipment. I can feel myself getting stronger and can actually see my numbers going up each 12 week round. I especially recommend this gym to people new to the area. It feels great to have a place to go and familiar faces working out along side me each week. Highly, highly recommend this place :)
I started going here a little over a month ago after a friend recommended it to me, and I absolutely love it. I wasn't making the time (or finding the discipline) to work out at home, but here I just have to show up and do what the coaches tell you to do, so it's great! No thinking, just doing (which is what I needed). I love the class format where you're seeing many of the the same people each time you go, and the classes themselves aren't boring (which is something I struggled with when I would try to do online classes/workouts). They really put in a lot of effort to make you feel welcome, and are invested in your improvement. Really pleased, all around!
Before finding Cully Strength Project, I had avoided gyms due to the dude-bro factor. Joey creates a welcoming, friendly, and energetic atmosphere that I look forward to every workout session. Joey’s comprehensive knowledge and individual attention comes through in the smaller class size. Over the year and half I have been attending, I have safely and effectively built my strength and confidence both in and out of the gym. I am surprised by how many activities are easier to do now that I am stronger. I would highly recommend CSP to anyone interested in gaining strength and confidence while being a part of a larger positive and energetic community.

I love Cully Strength. After not working out during the pandemic, the entire team at Cully strength has made returning to the gym a wonderful experience. Unlike other big name brand gyms I’ve been to in the past, the entire staff at Cully Strength has a vested interest in your goals and ensures you are working out safely and doing the exercises correctly. In just a few short weeks, i can already tell my strength, cardio and overall general health is improving. I started going to Cully Strength a couple months ago when I moved to the area, and I can honestly say I’ve never looked forward to going to the gym more. Each class is full of welcoming people with varying fitness/experience levels. Joey is extremely knowledgeable and so approachable. He pushes you to achieve your goals, while prioritizing injury prevention and correct technique. I’ve already seen major changes in my strength and fitness level since starting, and it’s so nice to say that I’ve done so while remaining injury free. I really can’t say enough about this place!
Cully Strength is a great small gym and I really enjoyed going here. They have enough equipment for everyone with individual spaces for each person during group classes. I went to Raina’s classes and she was awesome. She constantly varied the workouts and had both range of motion and strength exercises every class. Every day the routine was new and it kept classes interesting. Classes were small enough that you still got personalized instruction whenever you needed it too. I highly recommend Cully Strength if you’re looking for a small group workout in a great space.
Before working with Joey I thought barbells were too intimidating so I avoided them. I spent most of my time on the treadmill and didn't see the results I wanted. I started training at Cully Strength Project about a year ago. Since then I have gained confidence in and out of the gym. I feel strong and capable. The class has different programs of varying difficulty to test you as your skill and strength grow. The vibe of each class is great. Serious enough to get your work done but lighthearted enough to keep a smile on my face. The music is pretty great too!!!
Cully Strength Project is an amazing community of people pushing to improve their abilities with each session. Joey's grasp on fitness, strength and how that should be progressed is apparent as he makes valuable information more digestible. When I first started I thought I knew what I was doing but through the amazing program I've gained so much perspective on lifting, strength and posture! After many years of my son insisting I join Cully Strength I finally did and do not regret one second of it. Coaches Joey and Julia are amazing! I’ve always been intimidated by “weights” and In a short period of time I have learned so much. Joey and Julia focus on proper form and technique which is crucial in avoiding injuries and working out the proper muscles for each exercise. I have not worked out under coach Mike but I’m sure he’s equally amazing! I highly recommend Cully Strength if you want to become stronger and healthy.
I just started at Cully Strength a month or so ago and have really enjoyed it! As a lady who has avoided most standard gym situations, it’s not intimidating at all and the class sizes are small enough that you get the support and instruction you need. Classes are also full of folks of different ages, shapes, abilities and the folks coaching adapt to everyone’s needs. Lastly, this place is wicked clean! Everything is really tidy and well kept. They clearly care about what they do and the folks who train there. 10/10 recommend!
An absolute gem of a gym!! Joey, Julia and Mike are all wonderful coaches. It had been almost 11 years since I had done lifting like this. They made it super easy to transition back into it. I love that there are people of all skill levels in the classes. Everyone is so welcoming and supportive. I have been going to Cully Strength for just about two years now. I have never stuck with a workout regime like I have with this gym. It’s not JUST a gym, it’s a community of people whom you grow to care about and enjoy getting g stronger with! I never thought that in my 40’s I could train my body to do something so new but I just keep getting g stronger and stronger. Our coaches push us past what we think we are capable of in kind and safe ways. I never thought I would love you going to the gym.. but i do!
I've been taking the group classes from Joey and Julia for 6 months now and they're giving me life! I'm so glad I took the leap and signed up. You can be a total beginner or a seasoned gym rat and still learn so much, and everyone in the classes is so kind and welcoming. As someone who has literally never worked out consistently, the accountability has been great for me. I'm actually seeing real progress—DEFINED MUSCLE in my lil noodle arms! I can do a real pushup without my knees! And I feel great too! :)
I enjoy the welcoming and friendly atmosphere here, both on the part of the coaches and other members. And I really appreciate the focus on correct form and avoiding injury, good explanations, plus a nice variety of warm-ups and conditioning exercises. Nice community feel too, along with some fun options for extra-curricular (non-gym) activities for members. I’m a pretty new member - just joined about two months ago - and so far my only regret is that I didn’t check this gym out sooner. Highly recommend.
Joey and team are excellent! They've created a supportive environment where people of various levels of fitness can participate and feel welcome. The workouts strike a good balance between being collaborative and personalized. I had a pre-existing knee problem, but I always felt care and attention was given to work around it when needed. I can't recommend it enough. The social aspect has been a real motivator for me, seeing the same people for each class. If you stick with it you will see the results!
I steered clear of power lifting my entire life because I was intimidated by the bro culture and scared I would hurt myself. A friend recommended I check out Cully Strength Project and it completely changed my life. Coach Joey created a safe, community, fun environment where you are met where you are at, learn proper technique and push past limits both physically and mentally. I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking to feel strong and confident in their body within a safe environment.
cully strength is a super great place to work out. though the program can be challenging, it never feels overwhelming or de-motivating. instead, the supportive and encouraging environment fostered here challenges you to push yourself to do your best in a genuine way. i leave each session feeling accomplished..if also fairly exhausted. i've learned a lot here and, much to my surprise, actually find myself being the type of person who enjoys going to the gym!
Cully Strength is an awesome place to work out! I started as a complete novice to weight lifting and have seen my strength, confidence and fitness grow over the last year. The small group training format is great for accountability and allows for personalized coaching in a fun social setting. Joey and team focus on good form and can offer modifications across a spectrum of strength and ability, making the programming accessible to a wide range of folks.
Cully Strength is a great gym for personal fitness and Joey is great when it comes to what you need to work on and how you need to do it. After learning the basics with a free month's trial I was able to lift weight's safely and correctly and am coming back as soon as I get the chance. Cully strength is a great place for both beginner's and the more experienced to work out and I recommend it to most people out there looking to get in better shape.
One of the best workout classes I’ve ever attended. The staff here is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. The attention to detail reminds my of my kinesiology courses back in college. The high emphasis on form gives me confidence in trying new lifts, and keeps me from worrying about injury. The variety keeps every workout fun and exciting. The classes fill up fast! Find a way to get in if you want to learn how to do things the right way.
Great little gym with great trainers. They are very understanding of my physical limitations given my recent health issues, and are helping me get stronger every time I make it in. Class sizes are small enough to get some great instruction and attention to form to ensure you get the best out of your workout. Highly recommend giving the place a try regardless of your fitness goals or whether you’re a beginner, expert, or somewhere in between.
Absolutely fantastic! My husband and I train at Cully Strength Project with Joey twice a week. Joey is very knowledgeable and approachable. Joey has created a personalized regime that is challenging, interesting and effective. There is also a strong sense of camaraderie during the sessions that adds to the enjoyment. I have seen great progress in the health of my husband and myself. I highly recommend giving the Cully Strength a try!

Joey takes you seriously, Julia pushes you, and Mike is there for you! I passed the firefighter test today because of the mindset I got into with Cully Strength This gym is simple in structure- never gets monotonous. They meet you where you are at- not once, even on day one, did I feel intimidated. Everyone there is very encouraging- a true community. I feel really lucky they are in my part of the city!
Been working out at Cully Strength for about two weeks now after my previous gym closed. Already feeling results. The coaches at the gym professionals who really know their stuff. I've gotten helpful feedback on my form on deadlift, squat, KB swings, and more. Feels like this is a place where you can safely build strength and accomplish your goals. Coach Joey has been wonderful to work with as someone with no prior lifting experience. I've gotten a lot of individual attention as I learn to ensure that my form is correct and won't cause me injury. The coaches and other class participants are friendly and the gym as a whole feels very welcoming and inclusive. Cully Strength's approach to weightlifting feels healthy, achievable, and supportive.
Coach Joey's truly building a community. I look forward to classes each week as they're focused, have variety, and build on each other to really see progress in movements over time. The focus around core lifts, and always focusing on form and incremental progress is motivating and easy to jump into. I really appreciate the lack of ego and focus on making movements approachable to all folks.
I honestly picked this gym because it was the closest to my house, but after a few classes I was hooked! The class environment is very supportive and encouraging at every level. Coach Joey provides a good review of lifting technique while also adapting activities for different fitness levels. I feel lucky to have such a great gym in my neighborhood and can't wait to keep getting stronger!
After to going to a lot of different small group gyms (including Crossfit), I feel like I have found a wonderful place to seek progress for my health and goals at Cully Strength. Every time I walk in, I am welcomed by Joey and Julia (and other members). I have never been to a place where community is so strong and it definitely has a lot to do with the wonderful coaches, Joey and Julia!
Joining Cully Strength was one of the best decisions I've made in a long time. Joey is a fantastic coach. Although it's a group class, he gives everyone the personalized attention they need to be successful and feel like you're getting the most out of your workout. I've been dealing with a lot of ongoing injuries and he makes sure there is always an alternative exercise I can do to still get the full workout. I can't recommend this gym enough.

My main sport is racing bikes. Over the winter I joined Cully Strength to get stronger for the upcoming season and to get high quality cross training. I must say, Joey and his team did an amazing job - I never felt better and stronger. The training was very focused but also fun with super nice people around. 5 stars without any doubt
Anyone looking to not only get fit, but really begin a life long journey of lifting should give Cully Strength a try. It's perfect for those who are more experienced lifters, and beginers. Coach Joey is an extremely experienced coach, and will coach you with extreme care and diligence. I really cannot recommend this gym enough.
Cully Strength is a real people's gym: the atmosphere is friendly and supportive; the coaches are very experienced and adept at providing modification to where your body is on any given day. The basics are reviewed regularly, and occasionally the coaches sneak in exercises for the pure fun of it and that makes it all worth it.
I keep coming back for more, which is more than I can say for other workout programs I’ve tried! Training with Julia has been a transformative experience for me mentally and physically. I feel so fortunate to have found such a welcoming and inclusive community here. Thank you Julia, Joey, and Mike for all you do!
I've been working out at this gym for over a year and I really love it! Small classes, a consistent program and as much time with the trainers as you want/need. The community and friendships are the cherry on top :) Seriously though, the workouts are great, the people are great, you won't be disappointed.
I love that I can just show up to Cully Strength twice a week, and have Joey tell me what to do to get stronger! It's really nice to have someone coach me through correct form, so I get the most out of the exercises and don't hurt myself. The hour-long class flies by, and I feel amazing afterward.
This place is great. All the coaches are very knowledgable on lifting and conditioning, on top of being really approachable and fun. There's no weird egos or feelings of exclusivity, I was an absolute beginner and felt really comfortable and at ease from the start. Highly recommend training here.
Recently joined Cully Strength, and I feel confident that this gym and its staff will help you meet your fitness goals. Joey and his team know their stuff - it's refreshing to go to a gym that gets sh*t done without the ego or theatrics. Looking forward to their growth and many classes to come!
After starting training in July 2020 at Cully Strength, and being coached by Joey I've added 23 kgs (50lbs) to my 1RM Snatch and 22kgs (48lbs) to my 1RM Clean and Jerk. Even better than that, I found a positive and supportive crew of dedicated lifters of all levels. We're all getting stronger.

I love this gym! I’ve been training here for a couple of months with Coach Julia. Focusing on general strength and reducing the risk of running injuries. Getting stronger every week and staying fit. Awesome facility and good people. So glad this place is in my neighborhood!

Hands down the best gym I've ever been to. Joey and his team provide coached workouts designed to improve strength and stamina. The setting is intimate and feels like you're getting personal training. Plus great equipment and always a good Spotify playlist

Can't say enough good things about Joey and the team at Cully Strength. My teenage daughter and son have both trained with Joey and Julia. The workouts are engaging and tailored to their specific needs. I highly recommend the team at Cully Strength.

Signed up for an intro class through their site. They got ahold of me right away and found a time that worked. My first class was tough but I had lots of instructor attention and felt at ease. Friendly folks, clean place, and a serious workout.
Been going to Cully Strength for a few months now. The trainers are great and very accommodating to all skill levels and abilities! There is a strong emphasis on technique and injury prevention, which we all really appreciate. Highly recommend!

It turns out that I love strength training, Thx Cully Strength! This gym is top notch with a lot of attention paid to good form. I have been attending classes for about 8 months and the personal progress I’ve made is so satisfying.
Perfect place to start if you’re new or haven’t been to a gym in a while. Joey focuses on building a perfect form when lifting to avoid injuries and to build a foundation on which you can improve on. Highly recommend!

Cully fitness is truly the most comprehensive workout program you can get. And it's completely affordable. Joey and Mike are great people who push you just enough and never judge you for what can or can't do.
