We went to grab a late tea and scone. They had lots of baked goods left, and no one was in line. You would think they would serve us immediately, but no- more than an hour before closing they were already very occupied with cleaning, and as customers it was apparent that we were just a barrier to going home. We waited a few minutes before we decided to check out other places. This has happened before, and I try not to support businesses that ignore me, so it will be a few more years until I try again, especially as they no longer seem to carry their gluten not pastries (I would tolerate their bad service in exchange for their Gluten Not goods :)). The service at other locations is much better, and is usually excellent at the satelite. Here is my edit: This has happened many times before over the years. Although I live within walking distance, I stopped going to this specific location as I find it rude to have the staff clean when I am the only one waiting in line. Thank you for offering to contact me, but I suggest that you contact the staff that is working and suggest to consider NOT to say "we will be right with you" and have two team members continue cleaning before closure when clients are in front of them? This was 70 minutes before closing time on Friday, 7/21/2023. I still enjoyed the walk but will walk elsewhere in the future.

Three times I have been here, definitely not because of the mediocre, unhealthy, fast food, but convenience for pre/après-performance bites at UNM. Will never return to any of these Flying Stars, which have absolutely no respect for vegetarians. Will not go into previous disappointing visits, but this last time (10/22/23), ordered vegan/vegetarian Budda Bowl with tofu (3rd choice as they "were out of" first 2 vegetarian choices. My order came laced with pieces of chicken. Not fully chicken. Likely, just sloppy grabbing of items from bins by inept and uncaring "cooks." And they really don't give a damn. When I told the counter, the useless girl just said, "Oh, that's too bad." Look, I don't care if a restaurant has very limited vegetarian or even no vegetarian food. But this lackadaisical and expensive meat-filled "vegetarian" phonyness and disinterested staff (who generally get pre-tipped at the POS (learned my lesson there!)), I am totally finished with. BTW, 2 lackluster Budda bowls and drinks and tip were almost $50 that I was happy to walk away from. Hate this place! There are numerous other options in the area.

Visited this place on a Tuesday late morning when it was quiet and charmingly appointed. It immediately reminded me of the typical Bar Louie ascetic- nicely done. We had the giant breakfast burrito that is enough to share and a grilled mac and cheese sandwich. The burrito has excellent flavor in the cheese, chili, and spicy beans enough to carry it as a vegetarian option (with signature fluffy egg). They did not skimp on the cheese and potatoes were crispy and substantial. The grilled mac and cheese was ridiculous and delicious. You know you’ve made the right choice in entree when your server immediately brightens and gets excited by your selection. He was correct- an insanely cheesy, gooey, and delicious option. Regular coffee was good and the cappuccino delightful. Planning to go back to sample the bakery fare.

Food was very good. I had the Huevos Christmas style, others had a breakfast plate and a burger. Plenty of food ..none of us finished. You order at the counter and food is delivered. Service was good. Bathrooms clean and require a code to enter. It seems smaller than the Rio Grande location. Bakery items looked yummy.

Parking
If you're EB on Central, look for the parking lot after you pass Walgreens. The sign is a bit small and the lot is on the west side of the strip mall occupied by the restaurant. Some spaces are 2 hr general use but some are for specific businesses. There is street parking too but I forgot to notice if it's paid or free. During peak times, parking may be tight.
Kid-friendliness
Kids would be fine there. They serve alcohol, though.

My spouse & I have visited the Flyjng Star on Rio Grande twice for brunch and lunch, and the food was delicious. Deserts and pastries and beverages were all great. However, on 5/5/23 we visited the Flying Star on Central and left disappointed. The special chicken pot pie (skillet of sautéed veggies & chicken with biscuit on top & bottom) was so salty that I couldn’t eat more than a third. I was tired & not feeling great & the kitchen was about to close. Rather than complaining, I took the rest home, deciding to try to dilute the leftovers with more veggies. But 2 days later & I steamed more veggies & mixed them in with no additional seasoning, and the dish is still so salty I can’t eat it. This dish contained about triple the salt needed, begging the question whether the chef’s taste buds are impaired (heavy smoker???). I’ll try the Flying Star again, but would never order this dish again at the Central Ave. location. Chicken fingers were bland but the sauces compensated.

Update. Don't recommend. Went to Nob Hill location. After the person before us ordered, the counter/register staff turned around and started unloading a box and eating dessert. He and 2 other counter staff never made eye contact with us or gave any verbal or eye recognition of our presence for a very unreasonably long time. The manager was within eye shot, and when I confirmed his management position and told him of our experience, he too demonstrated poor customer service, continuing with his line work and not providing good eye contact or attention to the matter, except he'd talk to the staff. I worked well over 10 years as a server. I have patience for recognizing being busy and having to wait, and will still tip great. Just say, "Hello, sorry for the delay, we'll be with you as soon as possible ". There is no excuse for completely ignoring your customers. Previous fair to good experience at multiple locations. The food isn't cheap, but quality ingredients and healthy options. Not sure if I'll go back.

I have been going to this location for more than a decade and have always considered it a treat, but lately the food has not been good for me. This last time, my breakfast was awful, scrambled eggs burned, toast burned, potatoes so salty they were inedible. The time before that, my French dip was equally disappointing. I took one bite and the flavor was that of old meat, as if it had been sitting around too long and should have been tossed. I didn't eat the rest, and when the server picking up my plate asked me why I hadn't eaten it and I told him, he just basically shrugged, saying "yeah, not too many people order that," I guess to explain why it may have tasted old? The atmosphere is nice. I like the remodel (the same breakfast on reopening day was absolutely amazing). Just wish they could get it together in the kitchen and come back up to their old standards.

Dined in for breakfast on our way to the airport. Southwest Bennie was a bit heavy, but what can you expect when something is smothered in queso! The green chili really shined, but was not so overpowering that it was all you could taste. I really liked the eggs and the English muffin was great. You order at the front counter and get a number for the table at fist come first served seating. The folks taking orders were friendly. The dining room itself is showing some wear and tear. I get the impression they churn through a lot of people most of which are likely college students. There was also a really off-putting smell near the restrooms. For my review it was 5 for food and 3 for ambiance/establishment so I met in the middle at 4.

16.50$ salad without tax -ordered to go. I have ordered the salad in store many times and it is at least seemingly much larger when ordered “for here”. I know they have big leafy greens and giant strips of tofu so I went to the front to ask about the leafy greens and tofu and they not only seemed bothered by my question, and then blamed another coworker openly for forgetting to include croutons (which I didn’t even ask about). I was just disappointed with the staff how they handled the situation and the amount of food that pales in comparison to when ordering in person. I hope this is something that can be reviewed by the manager of the location as I have not experienced this at other Flying Star locations.

This place was so amazing a decade ago. First, I should note that the staff is friendly, and attentive. The food here used to be so amazing: comfort food and the most delectable desserts in town. But oh how the mighty have fallen. Tonight's choice: lukewarm coffee, and bread pudding with a "rum sauce"? Can't taste anything in the sauce. Bread pudding is ice cold in some parts, and scolding in others. Worse, the "bread" part tastes like it was stored in a fridge and absorbed other flavors from other non-desserts stored in the same fridge. Not good. I came by for a bit of nostalgia from the heyday when this place was awesome. Instead, gave them $12.50 for cold coffee and mediocre bread pudding. I think The Range Cafe is the better deal for desserts...

  • Taieja Cook

The service was really fun and Speedy there was a bit of a line however they got through the rush . Everything look delicious from the pastries, to the drink menu, to the food menu. I tried the turkey pot pie the biscuit was Fluffy and moist and delicious. I also tried the Buddha bowl with fried tofu. It had marvelous flavors throughout from the veggies that they included the tofu was delicious the wanton and the sauce that was drizzled on top would highly recommend getting that for vegans or vegetarians. Would definitely go back.

I'm an industry lifer, have done just about every role in the front and back of the house, from Massachusetts to New Mexico. It's just sad how food and labor is getting more more expensive, yet the service and quality continues to decline. The worse part is I still tip 20% only to have my order made wrong, and a server that can't even manage to make eye contact when speaking to me. Next time I'll just go to Federico's for a breakfast burrito.

I had coffee, pretty tasty, and refills are readily available. The cheese cake is good, and the brownies are yummy. This house has dedicated space for internet access, which is great for the students who frequent it. More expensive than i would like, but i am a senior on a budget. The service is professional, if a little slow, and the space is comfortable for reading, visiting with friends, or meeting new people. The restrooms are clean.

This place has amazing food, desserts, and drinks. My first time here and it has a very big coffee house feel where you could just relax for however long you want. Only thing I would recommend is a sign on the big menu that prompts you to the counter to order because the cashier just kind of looked at us leaving us wondering if we sit at a table or go to the counter. Definitely will return to eat here again.

I can't believe I've never reviewed this place before. I've been coming here since this was Double Rainbow. This is the original, the first, and still one of the best coffee shops/bakeries /dining establishments in Albuquerque. It's well worth visiting. Stroll Central/ Nob Hill, see the variety of stores, watch the people, meet friends for a pastry and a laugh. This is a place that puts the good in life. And if they still have it on the menu try the bread pudding, it's amazing.

A frequent Flying Star regular specifically for the Cauliflower Wings and Blueberry Pancakes. Had the blueberry pancakes two days in a row which was a great choice. Only complaint was the size of pancakes greatly differs based on whose in the kitchen. The pancakes in the photo were smaller than usual. Coffee is also really good, just brought out in glass cups when ordered hot, which means a longer wait time to drink waiting for it to cool.

Today was my first time trying flying star café, which got good reviews. After waiting for 15 minutes, I finally walked up to the front to find my order sitting there. I heard the kitchen shout to the front to get order 46 which was my order. I allow another five minutes start to walk up there again and finally they bring me my now lukewarm-eggs. Disorganized front of the house. the person after me got their hamburger before I got my eggs. The icing on the cake was $14 for my mediocre cold meal. Not very impressive..

Flying Star is an okay place to eat in Nob Hill, but it's lacking a couple crucial elements. First, there is a very lackluster effort to provide vegan options. The options from their standard menu are essentially a non-meat burger or oatmeal. A bit lame for what is trying to be a hip restaurant. Next, the way you order is not clear which causes confusion among patrons every time I've gone there. Not the worst you could do in the neighborhood, but I try to avoid.

I came through Albuquerque for the sole purpose of dining at the legendary Flying Star. It never disappoints! They have some eclectic new menu items such as Banh Mi and a zesty, shrimp citrus salad which was phenomenal! My server Dawn was extremely pleasant. She knew the menu like the back of her hand. She even gave me some travel pointers for my journey on Route 66. The entire staff was attentive. I never miss an opportunity to visit this amazing spot on Nob Hill. Thank you Dawn! Keep up the good work.

Cold, mediocre, pricey food at best. I had the green chile burger. The food was cold and unflavorful. My spouse’s stewpot chicken had more flavor but also cold. Really expensive for plain food. Had one of the desserts that was harder than a rock. A bit of a disappointment because we were told good things and the reviews looked good. Dont bother.

I visited Albuquerque and dined here with my friend. The staff provided these Funky spirits of youthful eccentricities. It reminded us of the Laural St. Saturn Cafe in Santa Cruz (not the original Mission St location) during college. This is a great place for the family, college students, and those passing through. Matzo Ball Soup is delicious. Wonderful flavor. Grilled cheese was good but nothing special. The Chai tea latte was scrumptious. Service was kind and efficient. Prices seemed high for what we purchased, but all of their food looks so yummy. Pie is $6.50 for a slice, that seems too expensive to me. Flying star is my fav store. However, I have never had good experience with delivery. I ordered today Grande cappuccino and got 8 oz cup of cappuccino!! 8oz!! I requested sugar and there was no sugar or utensils in the bag. Another time I ordered food with a pie and they forgot the pie and told me it will be credit for later. I am so mad that I paid more and did not get what I paid for.

The food often appropriates other cultures in a "color blind" approach. However, the best menu options are derivatives of Jewish origin (the owners are Jewish, names are Mark and Jean). Know that all the front of house and back of house staff are struggling and trying their best. Be patient, order good food, and recognize this place as a restaurant NOT a cafe.

Very displeased with my experience here. I ordered coleslaw as a side for my grossly overpriced impossible burger. Food runner, guy with tied back dark brown hair, brings the food and tells me there is no more coleslaw available and “if” I

The waitress improperly overcharged me and the wait was terribly long for our take out. They didn't even have the dessert that I wanted that day. Bad service!

I've always enjoyed going to this location since I was in highschool. The desserts are one of the best. A good menu and drinks. Plus Wifi access. A lot of college kids like to hang out there. Good place to take a first date. More

Expensive for what you get. You can get much better meals for the price point all over Albuquerque. The location is clean and the staff is friendly enough but truly nothing special. $17 for a basic salad is just ridiculous.

Great cold brew. Great lemonade. The chocolate eclair, rise and shine sandwich, and French toast were all good as well. Nice atmosphere, incredibly clean inside, and good service.
