BIG WARNING: I have been the victim of a well-established scam by the Hertz team at Durban Airport. Notice to all foreign tourists DO NOT BOOK in this agency you will regret it for sure. DESCRIPTION OF THE SCAM: I picked up the vehicle with a missing volume button on the front of the radio. Tired from several hours of travel, I didn't notice it immediately, but only a few minutes after leaving the agency, by turning on the radio. Thinking of the good reputation of Hertz throughout the world I did not worry about it more than that. On my return the agent in charge of returns has a suspicious behavior and very quickly identifies that the button is missing as if he already knew. He forces me to sign a paper where I briefly described that the problem was present from the beginning and absolutely not linked to me. 2 days later R3000 have been taken on my account, the equivalent of €170 for a button that should not even cost €3 to buy. I therefore come to the conclusion that I was the victim of a well calculated fraud with a lot of dishonesty. Surprising from a well recognized agency. Reading the invoice this agency is just a franchise explaining such practices. The problem has been reported to the head office of Hertz hoping for a quick resolution of this matter. SECOND POINT: another point on which I would like to bring to the attention of all potential customers. and reading the reviews this seems to be another common fraudulent practice by this agency. I return the vehicle with the fuel gauge at 8/8. The agent certifies with me that the tank is full and no comment is noted on this subject on the post inspection. again a bad surprise receiving the invoice it is noted that the gauge was only 7/8. I am wrongly charged 10 liters extra. WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE I HAVE RENTED CARS IN SEVERAL COUNTRIES ALL AROUND THE WORLD AND NEVER BEEN FOOLED LIKE THIS. I PROMISE THIS WILL NOT STOP HERE UNTIL UNDUE MONEY WILL BE REFUND.

TLDR; Hertz took all my damage liability (6900 ZAR) for a cracked rear light cover and is not responding to my emails. DO NOT RENT HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF. I rented a car that included the super collision waiver. During the time that I had the car, I accidentally cracked the rear light cover, which I of course would take responsibility for. However, Hertz automatically took ALL the damage liability covered by the super collision waiver, totaling to $390 USD (6900 ZAR). It was unclear how a rear light cover replacement should cost $390 USD, so I emailed them and asked for a damage repair invoice. No response after several days so I emailed again. Still no response, so I showed up to the Hertz car rental company store and asked for a damage repair invoice. I don't think they expected me to show up and ask for evidence, so I was given the run around and told to email again in a week or two. Some of the other rental representatives there were confused as to how I would be charged that much for a rear light cover. Since then, I've emailed customer service and damage claims at least 2 times over the last several weeks at the email that put in their comments in all the google reviews (4 times total) and I've unsurprisingly been ghosted. Preparing to file a claim with my bank. I was also charged for fuel replacement even though I filled up right next to the airport, which further represents how this car company takes advantage of its customers.

Don't go here. A lot of hidden costs they do not tell you about beforehand. If your rate for the days is cheaper, it is because they have a huge excess. This sounds like an obvious point, except they don't tell you that excess which can be R15k, which is only told when you are there to pick up your vehicle. They will then offer to bring your excess down by charging you more on your daily fee. This means you will have to extend your budget for car rental. They will also charge you fuel if you do or do not fill it up. I decided to fill up the vehicle a few km away and still got charged a fuel admin fee and R150 for fuel. There are too many hidden little costs to force you to pay more. I rate this as bad business conduct. If you do decide to go through with renting a car, I strongly advise the following. Grab your phone and upon receiving the vehicle film everything for your car inspection while the Hertz rep is there with you and the film the dashboard when lighting up. When you are finished and coming back from your trip. Record the km and take a photo of the dash and receipt when filling up. Then when leaving the vehicle for drop off, film the car again and the dashboard with a full tank and the km from the petrol station. I know this is tedious, but this will be the best way to not have to get all the extra charges that they will try and make more money than you actually should pay.

The absolutely stunning service received from your consultants on the evening of the 9th of February 2023, restored my faith in good old fashioned customer service. Preshnee and Zinhle assisted me with first class service after my late flight and noted that I needed to check-in at the hotel in Umhlanga soon. They arranged for the car to be brought around to the front of Hertz, because it was raining at the time. Preshnee even helped me with toll gate fees because I did not have cash on me, the R10 she borrowed me will forever be remembered and I will give it back to her I promise! Please keep up the excellent service, because this is what matters MOST to us, not the price or the fact that you are at the airport, but rather the treatment you provide to us when we need your service to be of the highest standard. It would be WONDERFUL for you to add the E-Tag so that we can go through the Shesa lane at the toll gates. I travel often and the reason I do not use your services very often is because your competitors have the E-Tag and I am able to drive straight through the Toll gate. Remember that there are now HIJACKINGS at Toll Gates - so if we still have to be paying in cash or swiping our cheque or credit cards, please consider this for the benefit of your clients.

Don’t waste your time. Wouldn’t even say they are worth a full star, but google reviews doesn’t allow an extremely poor rating. Alright Hertz let’s call you out. To my surprise, you are actually a bunch of criminals. A person rents a car, they pay a deposit (which you are supposed to make the effort to return), they return the car and the deposit gets refunded to them in due time, oh and that time period is 7 days which I have just now confirmed with your sales agents. Two days after I returned my car I contacted you people to see how long it will take for you to deposit the money back to me, and I was told that it would take a month. First of all, train your staff better in the future so they can actually know proper procedures and avoid them lying to your customers. Now that I have phoned and been told the money should have been deposited to my account after 7 days, but only got it sent to me now, 10 days over and above the 7 day period. So clearly your staff is useless and can’t actually rub two brain cells together in order to remember to refund customers their deposit. My money has sat in your account while you earn interest off of it because your pathetic staff “forgot” to refund me. Sort your issues out or watch your company fall.

This is the worst Hertz franchise we have ever used. When we returned a car here, the attendant said I scratched the underside of the front bumper. I denied this and he asked me to sign the return form as is. I later received an email charging me $300+ for repairs and realized the attendant took my copy of the return receipt and modified it after I left. The second time we arrived there at 6am , there was an angry couple who had been given a minivan instead of an SUV because they didn't have any cars available. This also meant that there was no car for us and we had to wait *hours* for them to to resolve this. In addition to this we've always had problems with them reserving really high security deposits (which gets blocked by our banks for fraud, needing to try different cards and taking long to resolve) and then taking forever to release these amounts, causing more problems at our next destination. We've never had these problems at any other Hertz location, so we will be avoiding this location in the future.

Very rare that I praise car hire agents but have to give credit where it’s due. The pick up was quick and efficient and the Hertz agent Nolundi couldn’t have been more helpful. All was well with our holiday until a passing truck fired a piece of gravel and cracked the car’s windscreen. Overnight the crack extended into the driver’s vision zone so I called Hertz at the airport and found they were happy to arrange a change of vehicle straight away. I hadn’t got the windscreen waiver and so expected a bill, which I got for 3600 rand to replace the windscreen. Whilst not over the moon about this I thought it probably the going rate. The change over was quick, pleasant and professional. Most importantly it didn’t impact our holiday is any negative way. So for good service no hesitation in giving them five stars - and a thank you.

NO stars for legal crooks/rip off artists but without ticking a star you cannot post a review. The cars are good and the staff are generally friendly and efficient. I have used this branch of Hertz twice now but NEVER again. On both occasions I have filled the petrol tank absolutely full at the garage which is a mere 400 meters from their returns point and yet been charged for petrol on both occasions. I have also had my credit card debited with the excess insurance which amounts to R17,000 and have to wait 21 days before this amount is credited on my credit card ??? The car has been returned un-damaged. I therefore have R17,000 less available to me on this credit card for the next 21 days. What a wonderful way of ripping the public off legally !! I will never hire a car from them ever again. Beware !!!

I made a booking, arriving at 8pm on the 19th of April. I made the booking with my wife's card, but me as the driver. Arrived with my wife, her card and my drivers licence. The person servicing me made a mistake and assumed that the credit card used for the booking must be my card. Short of it, she refused to issue me with a car. (Fact - I had the credit card with me that was used to make the booking). I the offered that we cancel and make a new booking using my wife's credit card and her drivers licence. She then replied that they have all their cars booked and have nothing available for me. This is the worst experience ever and the arrogance and unwillingness to assist me is shocking and pathetic!

Having had a family member pass away late at night, and the anxiety of booking plane tickets from CT to DBN and looking for a car rental at such short notice, Hertz was on WhatsApp with me through the late hours of Sunday morning, trying to assist me with the most affordable option. Everything was confirmed within 10 mins. The pick up and drop off went so smoothly and I was grateful to have one less thing to worry about. Most professional service from the WhatsApp service to the front office at the airport and the guys that sit in the office in the car park. Will definitely only be using Hertz in future. Americans be prepared to shell out more money than disclosed, even if paid in full in advance. They would not rent the car without buying additional insurance, eventhough I had Allianze travel insurance on the rental and paid with Reserve AMEX, which covers everything outside the US. They didn't care, they wanted the money. Oh and if you got their insurance the deposit was $800 but if you did not buy up, the held a deposit of $2750. Suspect behavior. Never have run into this before anywhere in the world. Find another vendor. They are not truthful, mislead, and overcharge.

Went to collect the car I booked after landing,had to wait a few minutes as the system was offline.The lady that assisted me was helpful but not very cheerful.Received my key and paperwork and on my way.On my way back to return the car,I was stuck in traffic and running very late.I received a call from Hertz enquiring about the return of the car.I explained my situation and they were quite concerned.I made it to the airport just in time to board the plane.Before boarding I received another call from Hertz to find out if I managed to make it time.Really appreciated that

To clarify this was with Firefly I reserved a small car and when I got there I was told the car wasn't available, but that I'd been upgraded to a different car for "free." Free is never free as this resulted in a big unplanned hold being placed on my credit card and I was told that the money would be released anywhere between 7 - 21 days. It has now complicated my vacation plans. I didn't like being forced to take a more expensive car, having to adjust my vacation budget and having to deal with a checkout person who clearly had no interest in making anything better.

Very unsatisfied with the service. Upon arrival at the rental station we were notified that we had to pay another 13000zar, about £800 as a deposit before taking the car. Deposit is more than 10 times the price of the rental. And you dont get it back till after 21days after the car has been returned. I would strongly recommend another rental company and check the prices ( if you can find them ). Booking was through Expedia - another big mistake. Eventually ended up with a super old car - what a way to start the holidays

They have great cars.... My problem with them.....n it's when they have to release funds after returning the vehicle with a full tank... They take up to 21 working days.... So for a guy like me who locks his grocery money to hire a car... he must wait for the entire month to get his funds released back to his account that is not Ayoba... I recommend all other car hires except this one unless you have a lot of money and you don't mind waiting then you will enjoy booking a vehicle with them

Not good car supposed to be ready at 930 ,big queue got car around 1015 as hadn't arrived yet and then found out 14200 rand deposit on car in case of damage which may take 21 days to be refunded.Will never use hertz again ,unfortunately no cars available at other providers, possibly different experience if you are local ,living there,but for south african living abroad when I used economy car rentals website wasn't informed of a 14200 deposit that would be taken off my card .

We booked a car which was not available so we were given an upgrade. When then drove the upgrade onto the highway and the car started swaying and was unstable on the road. We tried to call both numbers on your envelope neither of which we could get through. We then had to drive back to the airport when we have time restraints to have to swop the car. The staff seem unsure what to actually give us now. All in all not a great experience or start to our holiday

Extremely disappointing! we had pre-paid the reservation on the Hertz website and once there they charged us twice as much! everything was supposed to be included in the price we had to pay extra fees not expected, the gps ... what a shame! moreover we had to come back to retrieve documents that they were not able to edit when we arrived! so we lost a lot of time because of them! I will never book with this company and I strongly advise against it

The car it’s self was fine but I wasn’t impressed with the customer service, I hired a car and when I tried to extended I called the branch for 5 hours continuously and nobody was answering the phone. I then had to drive all the way to the airport to extend my lease when I asked the staff why they don’t pick up the phone when customers call as I was calling all day they couldn’t be bothered and responded that they must’ve been busy.

I returned the car yesterday two days earlier 25 minutes before the deadline. Returned the keys to the office and asked the assistant if there is anything else I need to sign or get a confirmation. I was reassured that everything is fine and I will be refunded for the two remaining days I didn't use. Today I got an information from the call center that the drop-off was late (2 hours) and I will only be refunded for one day.

Terrible. We waited an hour, with all neccessary detail, for our pre booked, pre paid car, whilst their system was 'offline'. We have 2 toddlers. We opted to rather cancel the whole deal and rent next door from First Car Rental. The management was nowhere to be seen and the staff were completely lost. Really unwelcome start to our long weekend. Wasted about 3hours trying to sort it all out with hungry tired kids.

She made the reservation for me and ensured that I got the rate as per their website. She also called me to ensure that I’d received email confirmation. Her customer service is exemplary. Got no issues with Hertz. Car was ready and the price was cheaper then any other Car Rentals. And the best was unlimited mileage. And they allowed you to return the car without full petrol. They will fill up and deduct the amount from your credit card. This helped us because we are not familiar with Durban. All in all, a very positive experience. I will for sure rent from them again.

What needed to be paid online and what was taken and what was reserved was different and resulted in me going from pillar to post to resolve the issue. For example the petrol component of approx R1400 was also taken off and put into reserve! Won’t use again. If there are costs reveal all on your contract page and not when an initial amount has already been paid.

The car was exactly what we had ordered, all of the scratches were pre-listed so we didn’t have to crawl around finding them, no hidden charges or pressure to purchase options, and we returned the car with no problem at all. It's been over a week since we returned our car and we still haven't received our deposit back. No one at customer services is able to explain why or assist with resolving the matter. very bad service. I was charge for re-fueling the car is though the car returned full. The last fill up was at Sasol garage less that 1km from the drop off zone. The company seem to look the km traveled and then charge you fuel on top of the rate / km you pay anyway. This is scam of note..
