"If you are regularly in this area and you have been thinking about joining a gym, JOIN THIS GYM! "Off and on for the last twenty years, I've belonged to a variety of the big corporate fitness chains like Bally's and 24 Hour Fitness"
I am surprised there are such high reviews for this place. I must admit the staff on premise are so nice and all around really make the environment of this establishment. However, I enrolled in a membership here due to the great prices for all the amenities. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing. My biggest issues were that the equipment is so old and most of it is broken (at least the equipment I needed to use). Every elliptical has some type of issue with it- be it the screens are dark you can't see much, or the buttons don't work when you want to adjust the settings. On every elliptical they make loud high pitch noises that would be insufferable if you don't have earbuds blasting to pull your attention. In the weight area there are machines that are obviously broken and if you try to use them you will not be balanced and could hurt yourself. The gym is also pretty dirty, though the bathroom and water areas are kept very clean. I would have given them three stars, but I have reached out several times via email and most of the time I didn't receive a response. I had to request a cancellation three times before I received a response acknowledging my request, and the request was very rude "I replied. Twice. Your account was cancelled on first request." though- the only response I received was telling me they would put my payments on hold, nothing about cancelling my account. I am a reasonable person, if technology fails that's fine, but at the very least keep your response professional and just confirm the cancellation. No one is going to receive a cancellation confirmation and continue to request a cancellation. I regret this gym membership.
I've been a member here for almost 4 years now and have nothing but good experiences here so far. For new members and people who are new to the gym atmosphere its a great place to come. You don't get the egos that the bigger "Club" can have, its simple for people who are new to the gym scence to come in feel comfortable and build there confidence in the gym. As someone with experiance in fitness this gym is awesome, none of the benchs, seats, incline and decline benches are bolted to the floor like the big clubs, really allowing someone to fully customize ones workout IE: bringing the benches and seats to the cable machines squat racks ect...There's never any wait time to use benches or machines this is really nice when u might be in a rush to get your workout in and get out. Theres tons of weights Dumbells go to 155lbs which is really nice for the bigger lifters. They have a system here also called ActivTrax which for people new to the gym. The program allows the member to go through a few critical exercises then but inputing them into the computer with your results you recieve a customized workout for you as if you had a trainer. Best of all this gym has a really good staff there aren't many of them so you see them all the time. They get to know you by name and always willing to help you out with whatever, be it a spot, or just helping you find a machine. They have great trainers as well my good friend Jeff is one of them come see him he will definitly get you hooked up right. Overall this place has an Awesome atmosphere, great staff and great support for the new to fitness and provides a great workout potential for all.
TL;DR- Great Gym, low cost, friendly service, larger than it looks on the outside. I joined Giants Gym 10 years ago, loved it and came every day. I joined back then because it was cheap and the staff was friendly. I moved out of town after a year and cancelled my membership. I moved back to Portland two years ago and one of the first things I did was come back and re-join. Not much has changed here over the last 10 years except for the name (from Giants Gym to Hollywood Fitness) and the removal of the Giant statue that was in the weight area. Same great staff, George and his wife Sherry (sp?) who run the place are friendly. They obviously care about this place and the people who come here. It's like walking into your favorite bar when you come in. People say hi, its not to crowded, its not to loud, its not to expensive, it's clean, the people remember your name and they remember what you like. If you walk or drive by this place on Sandy you really will not understand how large it is unless you come inside. From the outside it looks like a little storefront gym but once you come in you realize there is a very large area in the back which boasts a wide selection of weights and machines. I have been a member of many gyms, most of them large chains. They had things Hollywood Fitness doesn't have, like a pool or a sauna, but they were also crowded, you would have to wait in line to work out, the staff was not attentive, they were impersonal and there was no parking. Hollywood doesn't offer as many amenities that you likely will use only once a month, but they offer a lower cost and much better service.
If you are regularly in this area and you have been thinking about joining a gym, JOIN THIS GYM! Every kind of person exersizes here: young and old, every skin color, every weight and body shape-in other words, you will not feel out of place! Do not feel intimidated by the muscle bound men who always seem to be there. They are too busy doing their own thing to judge your abilities. The equipment is old but well maintained. The classes are few and they cost extra, but they feature quality instructors (I have done a few of them, not all). If you want them pay for them and if not, don't. This gym is affordable and they aren't into long term contracts because lives and needs change. They are open 24/7. Understand, there is a learning curve. There is a run through on your first day, then you need to figure out how to use the equipment using a thick manual. But the manual explains it thouroughly. There is a computer that gives you your next workout everytime you go in so your routine gets switched up. It is easy to use. I think that covers it. Update: It is 5 years later and I still go to this gym. Now I train using an app on my phone that the gym recommends. It is so easy to follow. I have not used them, but the trainers are friendly and professional for anyone who wants to go that route. (They train every type of person so don't assume that service is not for you. If you do better with a trainer or have specific concerns, try it!) Equipment is regularly upgraded. Very clean! Still very inexpensive. A gem!
Off and on for the last twenty years, I've belonged to a variety of the big corporate fitness chains like Bally's and 24 Hour Fitness. While the facilities were nice, it came at the cost of crowds, egos and time consuming logistics to park and get in and out of the facility. In fact, getting in and out of the gym often doubled my workout time. Overall the experience was complicated and something I started avoiding. With anything in life, we often do well when things are simplified and that is exactly why Hollywood Fitness works. I usually roll right up to the front door, hop in and get to work. The atmosphere is always mellow, but focused and the staff always know you by name and are very supportive. People go there to work. That's it. It's efficient and effective. This year, I decided to create more structure and challenge around my workout goals and signed up with Jeff Ruth for personal training. Jeff was incredibly mindful in his instruction and workout plan and accommodated for both my strengths and weaknesses. He also introduced me to a variety of exercises that I would never have tried on my own. Jeff is one of the most knowledgeable trainers I've worked with and discovered that he too came from a background of large chain gyms, but decided he was more effective with his clients at Hollywood fitness. If you are looking for a place that is supportive of your fitness goals, this is it. It's friendly, simple and effective.
UPDATE: I've now been a member of Hollywood Fitness for over 5 years, and I still love this place! It's such a cozy gym and it has everything I need. Plus, I love the staff. I still have the same amazing personal trainer, and enjoy the many friends I've made over the years with other gym members. It's truly my home away from home! MY ORIGINAL REVIEW: I freaking love Hollywood Fitness!!!! I've been a SUPER happy member there for over 2 years now and I can't imagine working out anywhere else. As far as gyms go, it's got all the equipment I need and is in a really convenient location. However, what I love the most is the atmosphere at the gym. It's got such a nice vibe--I just feel at home there. I've gotten to know so many of my fellow gym rats--many that I now call good friends. And the staff is amazing!! I love the personal attention I get from the staff--especially my trainer Jeff Ruth. He is the best personal trainer ever! I LOVE that guy!! You can tell he really cares about each of his clients--and all the gym members in general, whether or not they work out with him. He really gets you motivated to work out and really helps to create a positive, fun environment at the gym. I love my Hollywood Fitness!!
I had a negative experience with Hollywood fitness today. On Monday I took my 14 year old to the gym, she used a free pass. Today she went back $20 in hand to sign up and work out. The employee sent her away instead of calling me to discuss requirements. He was quite rude when I called him to ask about it. He told me “a 14 year old walks in off the street. It’s a liability just think about that. Just think about that!” However, they have a “free trial” program that would seem to cover that liability. She wanted to walk a few miles on the treadmill. I kindly let him know we would go to 24 hour fitness because my daughter doesn't want to go back there based on her experience. I have an older teen who went there with no issues, but sending a teenager away at 5am who is willing to work out, rather than problem solving and allowing her to work out that morning, is not helpful or attractive. I got off the phone and immediately received an email for another free trial for her. I don’t think she will want to go back. Needless to say, sending her out walking in the dark seems a liability. I drove her there because it’s unsafe to walk alone at dark. She walked home on Sandy in the dark.
(Rude ownership)I have never left a review ever in my life. The gym has a single bathroom. It has outdated equipment. They’re working on updates during the day while you workout. I’m assuming it was the owner that approached me and gave me a lecture about not setting weights on the flat bench I was using… then told me my footwear was unacceptable. I asked why… he said I was wearing slippers. I explained that they are not slippers, they are sneakers I run in and have worked out in every gym I’ve ever gone to. “Hey dudes” is the brand shoe I was wearing.I uploaded an image to show that I’m out being unreasonable leaving this review. He said he didn’t want to argue and to refer to the image of approved footwear…. I couldn’t see anything wrong with my footwear compared to the image. My shoes have laces. The only difference is they can be slipped on? Anyway…it was such an ordeal I just canceled my membership immediately. I think all the spray tan had gone to this guys head. Not a bad gym when no one is there harassing you. Really was just the owner?? being weird as hell.
If it wasn't for Hollywood Fitness I definitely wouldn't be where I am today. In two years I've lost over 170 pounds of weight and dropped over 35% of body fat. The staff at Hollywood Fitness have always been willing to answer any questions I have about form, nutrition and anything that will give me a better quality of life. They treat everyone with respect and are never too busy to help someone out unlike other gyms I've been at. The training staff have helped me transform my life and self confidence, and I feel like they're family not employees. Big shout out to Jeff, and everyone else who's helped me these past two years! If you need a trainer, those are the guys to talk to! It seems like Jeff knows every member in the gym by name and those little things go a long way for someone like me. The prices are the lowest in town, and you get SO MUCH MORE for your money here than the other Corporate franchised gyms out there. It's always clean, never too busy for me to work out & I can't imagine what my life would be like if I hadn't joined up three years back.
I signed up for this gym and after moving, it was no longer convenient to attend. I attempted to cancel my membership and it took years to achieve. The gym uses a 3rd party company to handle the membership services. I could not cancel my membership online or via email. I had to call a number and give outdated information in order for them to not hang up on me, which happened several times. I asked them to cancel my membership, and they tried to upsell me and freeze my account for 3 months instead. Eventually, they told me that they needed 30 days notice to cancel and that they were charging me for that time, begining from when my next billing cycle starts. Today is 12/11/20. They won't be cancelling my membership on 01/11/21 due to billing cycles. I can't comment on the gym itself because of COVID. I can't comment about the machines or staff because I haven't been there in over 3 years. I CAN say that they have collected hundreds of dollars from me without providing me anything in return, and this is a predatory business practice.
Hollywood Fitness is an amazing gym. Everyone, including staff and members, are so friendly. They were very helpful when I went in for my first time. Showing me around, letting me know where everything is. And even gave me some tips on which machines to use for the specific areas I as trying to work on. It was an amazing feeling to know they really care about their members. The prices are super legit compared to other gyms. And the hours are so convenient for me with my work schedule, plus, i hate going to the gym during rush hour (in gym terms lol). =) My favorite staff member there is JEFF!! Even though I didn't pay for a personal trainer, he spotted me one time, where I most likely looked clueless on where to start, lol, and showed me how to use the machines. Very very VERY helpful!!! THANKS JEFF!! I also noticed he welcomes EVERY SINGLE PERSON that walks in that building, and always has a smile on his face. Definitely gives you that motivation that YOU CAN DO IT!!! I highly recommend to check this gym out. Its worth it.
+The gym has a wide variety of weights, machines and classes. I feel like this is the "Cheers" bar of neighborhood gyms. It's comfortable and friendly, affordable and close to home. You often see the same folks there at the same time every day. The staff and trainers are knowledgeable and are super friendly, approachable guys. It's hard to walk through the gym floor without at least one of them greeting you by name. +Jeff Ruth is my personal trainer and he's likely the most positive person you'll ever meet. He's always excited to train and is your own private cheerleader during sessions with lots of enthusiasm and encouragement. He's also stickler for proper form and will push you as far as you need to be pushed to reach your goals. Sessions with him can be grueling but really satisfying. By the end of it, you'll feel exhausted but proud of yourself. I will say though, that all the trainers are great and will get you where you want to go. Fist pump for Hollywood Fitness!
I've been a member here off and on for the last 3 years. This is what I consider an "average joe's" style gym. You don't have to be that perfect body type, girls aren't dressed to impress, and the machines are bit miss matched. It's a gym, plain and simple. It's got all the tools I need to get in a great workout without the fluff. It's open 24 hours a day and the staff is next level good. I recently took about a 10 month hiatus and as soon as I walked through the door, Jeff (a trainer there) said "Hey Tom! What's up?" His memory is incredible. He didn't question why I was gone, he was just excited that I was back. Additionally, I've never had a personal training session with him. That's some serious customer service! I recommend Hollywood Fitness for anyone who's serious about working out and doesn't want to deal with the fancy gym stereotypes. Go in, do work, feel great.
EDIT: --ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW-- After I posted this review, the owner contacted me and assured me that mask safety was a high priority and that he had spoken to his employees, and I did notice that employees were no longer ignoring maskless people in the gym. "I've been coming to Hollywood Fitness for years, and I usually have no complaints. The post covid reno is lovely, I appreciate the spacing and the extra disinfectants HOWEVER twice now I have been here and multiple other clients are unmasked (there are FIVE people with no masks on right now) with no employees around and no effort to ask them to mask up or leave. Maybe this is more of a nighttime problem as there is less staff here? Either way, Please have stricter mask enforcement for those of us who dont want to risk getting sick. Even like, a big sign that I can point at obnoxiously or something."
This is a great local community gym that is open 24 hour, something that i consider a must out of my gyms. If you are looking for a place to build muscle your can't ask for much better. The equipment tends to be a little on the old side but there is plenty of room and a very supportive staff. They also have a computer system that can help you develop and stay on track for your program. If you are into Cardio i would say that the place is a little disappointing. The equipment is old and there isn't much there. They do have plenty of TV's for your cardio and you can change the channel to whatever you want. Probably the best part of this place is the price. It is an amazing deal! If your looking for a local gym this is a place to check out. It isn't for everyone but you should look to see if it is for you.
I'm really happy with my decision to join this gym. I've belonged to Health Clubs before -- it bugged me that my dues paid for the amenities I never used like smoothie bars, childcare and lap pools (they're great it you use them - don't get me wrong!). This gym has the essentials I need and a friendly, knowledgeable staff that is there 24/7. Its in my neighborhood and there is ample car and bike parking, so I can get in and out easily whether I'm coming after work or riding over from home on my bike. I started working with Jeff Ruth twice a week and started seeing results very quickly. I love Jeff's upbeat attitude and challenging yet fun workouts. If you are lapsed high school or college athlete I would especially recommend Jeff's training - you will enjoy yourself!
I absolutely LOVE this gym. They have a great atmosphere and I actually look forward to going (I can't say that about any other gym I've been a member of). When I sought out a gym I knew I wanted a place I was comfortable at, and this was it! I lost over 100 lbs here because of the supportive people (staff and customers). Everyone here is genuine and amazing. The personal training is also great and affordable. They really listen to your specific needs and customize your session specifically to you. You also can't beat their price for the monthly membership! I also really appreciate the support Jeff has given me. Every time I walk in for a work out he welcomes me with a warm smile and (usually) a high-five. His energy is contagious. He's a great PT also.
I was a member of this gym years ago. I have long since moved out of the area and cancelled my membership. The gym was fine when I went. Small, clean, local gym that was cost effecient. The reason for my low rating is that though I canceled my membership YEARS ago, I have now recieved multiple advertising texts from this gym. I do not appreciate this practice and find it inappropriate. It is one thing to text your current members, it's another to text members with canceled memberships. I am editing my review in response to the needlessly passive aggressive response from the business below. If there was an unsubscribe button provided in the text messages I was recieving, I would have. But there were no options to stop the texts in any of the messages.
This is a fabulous gym! The parrot Buddy is the life and King of the place, the vibe is super positive and friendly. The workers are trained well, the facilities are always more than adequate with plenty to use even in peak hours. The price is CRAZY great and today (impetus for writing this was gratitude) I found out I was 10 days behind on my fees and they were very understanding and nice about it. I just moved, have spent $3000+ on hotel fees, move-ins, applications and everything plus...just the last few nights had been squeezed badly from some crazy tings which triggered PTSD. So it's a hard time for me all over and this gym is rock solid. You gotta give respect and Kudos where's it's deserved. Look no further, you found yourself a great gym:)
Suspended my account because of covid then Hollywood Fitness opened back up. Never received a phone call or email letting me know they would resume automatically charging my account. I dont feel safe going back to the gym nor plan on going soon but couldn't cancel my account without going through a third party. This group called ABC financial weren't very assuring that I wont get charged again since they took my notice as the email and phone call I gave them so now I have to work with my bank to try and block future debits. It's not like I received a haircut then refused to pay, I haven't used the gym in months and my log in at the counter can easily prove that. Not sure why they cant refund. I wont be coming back when things are safer.
I have been going to Hollywood Fitness since November of 2014. I have always been intimidated about going to fitness centers or gyms, however, I reached a point in my life where I just had to get past it. Hollywood Fitness is a complete facility that feels like family and I have felt quite at home with no judgement or pressure. I have had a personal trainer (Jeff Ruth) since February and both he and the process have been great. He has been a great motivator and has become a friend. My weight loss is slow go, however, my strength and stamina are growing exponentially. I have felt supported by Jeff and several of the members as well. If you want a complete facility with personal guidance, then this is the place to go.
Hollywood Fitness (Giants Gym) has been super convenient for me being in the neighborhood and all. And if you need a tastey coffee to jump start your workout before hand Case Study Coffee is right next door! Hollywood Fitness is extremely relaxed and comfortable, it has everything you need to get your exercise in for the day. It is completely affordable - and open 24/7. The owners are great! And so is the rest of the staff. They're all really friendly. :) Jeff (personal trainer) has also helped me out so much with all my questions and goals. He's very kind, and knows his stuff! It may look small on the outside but if you go in and check it out you'll see how big it really is! Not huge, but just right!
I've been going to this gym since October. I bounced from LA fitness, to 24, crunch and snap. I will never leave this gym. The owners have staffed the right employees to create a culture that is open, friendly and respectful. There's enough room and equipment for my goals (and I believe any goal). There's a real, hard-to-find neighborhood feel to it. You can check all your stress at the door and focus on your goals, and everyone is knowledgeable and helpful. George is the owner I believe, awesome guy. The trainers are all very friendly and the older night guy is hilarious. All-around this is the best gym in town with the best members. I'm proud to workout at hollywood fitness
Love this gym! I was a member for about a year before I moved to Vancouver. I joined Anytime fitness in hopes of being able to capture that same “small gym” club feel but it was not the same. Hollywood Fitness has a balance of having that “small gym” feel, while also having every piece of equipment that you need to workout each muscle group. Contrary to a review I read it is also one of the cleanest gyms I have been too. Staff is constantly walking around the gym cleaning or putting weights back in there appropriate place. It is also the most affordable gym around with no term contract. If your looking for a inexpensive and quality gym to join, sign up at Hollywood Fitness!!!
A nice gym where you can go to work out and concentrate on personal fitness rather than the old "meat market" gym. The trainers have a variety of experience from young and hyper to cagey veterans. There is an excellent variety of equipment and machines that will fit anyone. It is really clean and friendly; I would recommend it to anyone who lives in the area. My personal trainer, Jim Hnatow, has helped me lose weight, get in shape, and helped reduce my medicines for my health conditions. He has multiple decades of training and experience that he uses effectively in a variety of combination exercises and routines that make a half hour training session all I can manage.
I've only been going about a week but man I love this place. It's everything you need in a gym and nothing you don't. I left Gold's Gym when I moved here and don't miss it at all. Machines are usually open, there's plenty of them. There's a stretching area and a lot of cardio machines as well. Really solid free weight selection too. Good parking in the back. Nice employees and it's a smaller gym than the big box ones so there aren't as many people trying to flex out in the mirror when I'm just trying to get through my routine. Also, it's 24hrs which is just like my favorite gym back in my hometown and that's super convenient. All in all love this place so far.
I've been going to Hollywood Fitness for over 3 years, and it has been a great experience. I always feel welcomed and it's not a meat market, so it's more comfortable for me to workout on my own. Everyone is usually very friendly and it's not usually too busy. By far the best thing about the gym is my trainer, Jeff. He is enthusiastic, but not overly so, welcoming, and will get you results. Jeff has never made me feel bad for not always eating clean and he realizes we are still human and we are going to enjoy life and food! It's been really fun working with Jeff, and I encourage everyone to sign up with him!
Started out feeling really good about this place, low rate, no commitment. Maybe not the fanciest place or newest equipment, but location was a big factor. Jeff gave me a tour and answered all my questions, greets me by name every time I come in... Then my trainer was let go, so I asked to speak to the owner about a refund. He was incredibly defensive, aggressive, unpleasant and even litigious. Now, not only do I want my training refunded, I want to cancel my membership. I don't want to give any more money to someone who is so rude and throws around the word "sue" to both customers and employees.
I've been going to this gym for years and love it! Great low key neighborhood gym with a community feel. They have all the equipment needed for a good workout and even personalized workouts for you each time you come in based on your skill level. The gym has been locally owned and the employees who work there genuinely seem to care about helping you achieve your fitness goals and will take steps with you to get you to those goals. Jeff is a great trainer & helped me recover from my joint injuries my previous trainer caused & we've been going strong ever since then!! Pun intended.
I've been a member for over 6 years now and am still a big fan! I've had memberships at all the big corporate gyms, and several smaller ones too, but Hollywood is the best of all worlds. It's relaxed, comfortable, and has all the weight-lifting equipment anyone could need. Everybody says hi to each other and it's a very supportive atmosphere without the "meat-market" feel that is common at bigger gyms. The staff is also amazing, especially Jim Hnatow who's been my Personal Trainer for years, and the best support ever in keeping me on track with my goals!
We've been with Hollywood fitness for about three years now and couldn't be happier. The staff are all friendly and try to get to know all the members, the facility is clean and welcoming, and there is a real sense of community. They also offer personal training and free classes which are fantastic. Jeff the assistant manager is the best! He's friendly, genuinely interested in how people are doing and willing to answer any questions. I highly recommend Hollywood Fitness to everyone who is interested in personal fitness and building strong communities.
If I could give zero stars, I would. Avoid this gym at all costs. The owner was incredibly rude and disrespectful to me. I'd recommend going to Planet Fitness or Crunch -- half the price, better, more, and newer equipment, and no being patronized by men in positions of power. I am validated by the fact that there are other negative reviews in here that mention the owner's demeanor specifically; this shows that my experience was not a one-off. When in a customer-facing position, yelling at and then hanging up on the customer...is not a good look.
Best gym in Portland, fantastic for anyone at every fitness level! Super supportive, non-judgemental environment to work on whatever goals you have, with plenty of cardio equipment, weights, and classes to choose from. I also use their trainer services and Jeff does an amazing job of encouraging me in the most positive, fun way possible to reach my fitness goals!! Not only is the gym a great spot to workout, you also can't beat the price!! I highly recommend to anyone in the area looking for a go-to gym, as well as anyone traveling through!!
Smaller, neighborhood gym - joined with family under wife. Not a lot of frills but equipment gets the job done. Reason we left was the staff. Trainers would do nothing but upsell, wasted paid sessions on using app to show you what your body could look like and not great at communicating/booking their sessions reliably. Owner was rude and rather intense. Dismissive of all issues mentioned. Not a very body positive or welcoming place by staff either. All in all - we cancelled membership within first year since we didn’t feel comfortable there.
This is a wonderful gym. I joined a few weeks ago. Everyone is very friendly and the Saturday morning yoga class with Cristina is awesome. My only complaint is that it's been incredibly difficult to schedule an appointment for an official orientation with a trainer. I'm paying for the ActivTrax program, but haven't been able to use it yet because no one can seem to get back to me to schedule a time. A bit frustrating, but all in all it's a great gym and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable, laid back gym environment.
Try Planet Fitness instead. When I went, A few machines were in various states of disrepair. The locker room looks like a New Jersey bus depot. Cheap place, shady practices; I paid for a month of membership, which the window sticker claimed would be $20/mo, went a few times and stopped going, not worth crippling myself on bad equipment. Paid for a month, went for a few weeks, no biggie right? Guess again. They actually had the nerve to send my information to a collection agency after I stopped going, not a good look. Not a good gym.
I think this is a great gym for people who want to support local business and don't like the feel of the gym chain's like LA or 24. The staff has always been helpful and willing to give advice, there is a trainer for every personality type and walk of life here. They are expanding and adding new programs all the time it seems. Though the equipment is older and they lack a rowing machine, all the other elements are there. See Jeff for personal training, he could motivate anyone to obtain their fitness goals.
Both the staff and participants here are considerate to each other. There are individuals of all ages, genders and color. It is a welcoming environment to come to after a stressful day at work. Because of my schedule that changes weekly I often come her in the evenings or after midnight. In addition I a am able to get personal training to meet my needs. Such as the occasional boxing lessons that helped me pick up my speed as a cashier at work. The most important thing about coming here are the people here.
Such a great gym! It's clean and they have all the equipment I need (not always the newest but it always works). For such a low membership price this is easily the best value in Portland. The people are very friendly and the staff are great! Jeff learned my name the day I joined and has remembered ever since! Lots of parking, never too crowded, and a pretty good selection of exercise classes if that's more your style. Overall, this is a great neighborhood gym where you can get in a good workout!
This is a great gym. Whether you're an experienced gym person or a complete novice, this is an excellent facility. Not a lot of glitz, just a big space with lots of equipment. The staff is very knowledgeable about fitness. Jeff Ruth is a particularly good trainer. About a year after I joined, I asked Jeff to work with my wife. I'd seen him work with clients and was impressed by his skill. There's just no substitute for a great gym with great trainers if you want to be in good physical condition.
This place has absolutely everything you could want in a gym, and none of the crap you don't. There are two cardio equipment rooms with a few ignorable TVs, there's a warehouse-sized room full of free weights and manual machines, there are two clean locker rooms, there's a small mat space next to a garage door (open in nice weather), and there's a parrot. Finally, the staff are friendly but not aggressively so. Finding this place has been the second-best thing about having ACL reconstruction.
This gym is in my neighborhood and I am so glad. All the staff has been super friendly and the classroom is nice. Lately, I’ve been taking classes with Nick and he is an awesome teacher and trainer. He’s a good communicator and makes sure I’m doing exercises properly and safely. I especially love that he doesn’t pressure me to lift more weight than I’m comfortable with. He also plays music that makes the workout fun. Thank you Hollywood Fitness for hiring him, and for being a great gym!
I can't say enough good things about this gym. It's always clean, the staff is super approachable, and it has great gym culture. As a woman, I always feel safe and welcome. It's the first gym where I felt comfortable enough to try new machines or the free weights and not feel like I'm being judged or watched. I've overheard the owner talking with the staff and they seem to all be genuinely passionate about health fitness and making the place welcoming and safe for their members.
This gym is so cute and the staff member that I worked with was awesome. I’ve been searching for a gym specific to the type of lifting I do and this gym is pretty much equipped with it all. I will say that it is pretty cramped in there, lots of equipment and not a huge amount of space. The people working out around me were very inviting, I really appreciated how welcomed I felt by the environment itself. For the price plus the hours, it’s definitely a gym to consider.
I love how Hollywood Fitness is set up so that you can workout without feeling watched. The staff are awesome--love how Jeff greets everyone with such enthusiasm when they enter and makes sure everyone feels welcome. The gym is surprisingly larger than it looks from the street and has all the equipment you need. There's also some great quirks like the pet bird at the front desk. If you are looking for a friendly, supportive environment to exercise this is your gym.
Hollywood Fitness is a great gym. They have a little bit of everything + classes. At $30 even the premium membership is cheaper than all the other gyms. I really like Activetrax, that builds you a custom workout each time you go. Don't forget about the smoothie cart that is outside to get some protein after your workout. I am so glad I ditched my 24 hour membership. It was as much as 2x the basic membership at Hollywood Fitness. Hollywood Fitness is an awesome gym
I’ve been a member for years. It’s open 24 hours. Huge gym, lots of various equipment and machines to use and lots of parking. It’s always clean and I feel very safe there. The staff are exceptional especially the graveyard shift. Special shout out to Mike who is always friendly and helpful if you need assistance with a machine or to answer questions. Great gym, great price, great employees. A win win all the way around. 2 very enthusiastic thumbs up.
I'm a regular member here and I really appreciate the relaxed atmosphere. People who work there will help as needed, but there are no upsells or anything like that. The really interesting thing I never knew until I joined is that the front of the gym from Sandy makes it look really small. Then you go in and the "aircraft hangar" part in the back makes the place huge in comparison. I'm glad I joined and would encourage people to give this place a shot
Great prices, friendly staff, lots of good weight equipment. I joined specifically because they have the best weight room for the money in Portland. Totally worth it. I would also like to commend them on enforcing their policies. Recently, I saw them ask a patron to leave for not respecting the dress code. This is a refreshing change from so many gyms that are so afraid of a single bad review that they allow their place to become lawless.
I've been working out here for about a month, and am so happy to have joined. It has a great neighbourhood feel to it, and it's never too crowded. I come in pretty early in the mornings to work out, and Kevin is always there to say good morning. I was shocked he had taken the time to not only learn my name, but several others as well. It's definitely not something most people don't experience in big name gyms. I love working out here!
I joined in Mid July and am so glad I did! I have greatly missed going to the gym to work out and am so glad I joined Hollywood Fitness. It’s a large space so easy to keep distance from other people. They are following the state’s mask rules which gives me peace of mind and when I’m there and cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer are readily available. I feel so much better mentally and physically since being able to workout here.
There is a lot of equipment and nice changing rooms for men and women. There are plenty of bottles of cleaner so you can clean the equipment when you are done using it. If you have a membership you can only bring one guest for a lifetime, which we didn't know. It doesn't renew at the beginning of the next year, which is lame. So when deciding who your lifetime guest will be choose wisely as you won't get another chance.
UPDATED REVIEW: I initially gave four stars because of my concerns about a program where five star reviews were rewarded with points to be traded in for prizes. As you can see at the end of my review George (gym owner) has considered my concerns and ended the program. Hollywood Fitness is an amazing gym and has changed my ideas of what a gym has to be. Non intimidating and very welcoming to people of all levels.
I've been going to Hollywood Fitness for eight years now and it meets my needs perfectly. It is a local gym that has an extensive weight floor. They have cardio equipment and classes too, but the weight floor is where this gym shines. The staff are friendly and the owner often frequents the facility during the week. Due to Covid they have recently made updates to better facilitate spacing and cleanliness.
Best experience ever to finally find a gym that works with me, and doesn't push you into a cookie-cutter program ! Jeff Ruth is an awesome Personal Trainer who listens and works hard to tailor a program that is designed to get you to your goals. He gives you the attention, focus, and motivation that makes you feel that you are his most important project, all delivered in an upbeat and personable style.
There's not much to a 5 star gym yet many fall short. It's very clean, equipment is in solid working condition, it has everything you need, the members follow standard etiquette and the staff are friendly and helpful. Bonus, the weekend night desk attendant brings his adorable, very sweet dog. Their one weakness is the locker room game is weak as hell but I only ever use them to pee so whatever.
Been coming to this gym since 2009 and Im more than happy to say that the atmosphere is constantly kept in the state where if you want to go work out and better your life then you come here! Fantastic staff, plenty of equipment and classes to partake in and if you need assistance or have any questions- the staff and even the owner are more than happy to help. You want gainz, you come here.
I've been going here for about 2 months now, and it has been great. The weights area has a ton of equipment to choose from - basically everything you could want. I've noticed that when equipment breaks (which isn't often), it gets repaired quickly. Friendly staff, clean facility, and easy 24hr access. Best part - complimentary hand towels every time you come in!
I've been going to Hollywood fitness for a few months now and it's great. It's clean, the staff are helpful, and it's super affordable. I used to be terrified of working out and thought that weight training was too hard/intimidating, but the activtrax app has been really helpful. I actually look forward to going to the gym, which I never thought would happen!
I hate the gym. I love Hollywood Fitness. The crew here is friendly, helpful and welcoming. Even Buddy (the parrot) will hang out with you if you give him some lima beans. Good equipment, and no-frills get-down-to-business facilities. The price is affordable because you're not paying for the pool or steam room that you never use. Highly recommended.
All the staff at Hollywood Fitness are AMAZING! I have always been too shy and scared to join a gym, but this place is very welcoming and comfortable. My boyfriend and I usually work out at late at night, and Jeff is always there to greet us! He is super nice, helpful, and awesome to talk to! I recommend this place for anyone of all fitness levels.
Pretty basic fitness place. Lots of machines and weights. Despite theccomment from the owner that they "could not find my name" in the membership I am, indeed, a member under my legal name: Leland Williamson. All that said, I do wish they monitored the floor a bit better. I frequently see people using equipment and not wipingbit down afterward.
I just joined the gym and I've never been so welcomed. The morning staff is always friendly and helpful with any questions I come with (being that I'm new to fitness, I have a lot of questions!). If you want to finally reach the goals you have had and do it somewhere without being made to feel insecure about yourself, then this is the place!!!
I got a membership somewhat reluctantly in December and now I look forward to going to the gym 2-3 times a week! Hollywood Fitness is a big part of my change in mindset. It's clean, staff are friendly and helpful, and I never feel judgement as a newbie. They have great classes if you are looking for something more structured. I love my gym!
Its easy for me to vouch for this gym because of its knowledgeable and helpful staff, a plethora of equipment, its cleanliness, its lack of crowds, and that its open all the time. I've been going to it for ten years and still see a number of folks who were here when I started so they obviously like it too. I'd recommend joining today.
I'm a huge fan of Hollywood Fitness! I've been treated kindly from the very first day I walked in the place, and feel more like family than just another client. My personal trainer, Jeff Ruth, goes out of his way to make sure I'm consistently challenged with the program we develop for me. I can't imagine training with anyone else.
I have been with Hollywood Fitness for 2 years now. It is a great local gym where you get great, personalized customer service. The staff are very knowledgable and helpful. I have especially appreciated Jeff and his expertise as well as his encouragements. This is a great place to workout and to get help with meeting your goals.
Not very clean unfortunately, because it has really nice facilities and machines. We did a trial day and it's definitely still a possibility due to its location but I'm not 100% sold. It seems like it's hard for them to keep up due to a worker shortage. That's just a guess. If it was cleaner I would totally get a membership.
I never leave reviews, but for this place I will. The staff is so incredibly kind and helpful. You can tell the staff, especially Jeff, loves their job. Ever since the first time I came in Jeff has remembered my name (and everyone else's name it seems!) and has been nothing but nice and helpful since then. 5 stars for sure!
Hollywood Fitness is a great local company owned and operated by great local people. I have really enjoyed my time here and feel like the staff really care about the customer. The personal trainers are great as well, especially Jeff who has really helped me out along the way. Thanks to all of you and keep up the good work!
Switched from 24 hour fitness several months ago. Due to that gym no longer offering 24 hour gym services any longer. So far pretty happy with hollywood fitness. It's a small gym so it can get packed pretty quick during peak hours. Has all the equipment anyone would need for any level of fitness or desired workout routine.
I've been going to this gym since moving to Portland nearly two years ago. Friendly staff, tons of equipment, all kinds of patrons. Its locally owned and is open 24 hours. What's more, where else can you find a gym that has both a parakeet and giant golden muscleman statue? Would recommend to anyone in the neighborhood.
I’ve been a member at Hollywood fitness for some time now and I can’t express how great there customer service is. Everyone at the front is knowledgeable, always working on cleaning the club, and they are all very friendly. Keep up the good work and I’m happy that I can call Hollywood fitness my home away from home.
Jeff is a standout amongst the staff of Hollywood Fitness, a no-nonsense gym equipped for all levels of fitness. He genuinely cares about your well-being, is encouraging and helps design a workout specific to your needs. All of this with a positive, friendly attitude makes for the best trainer anyone could hope for.
Hollywood Fitness offers everything you could want in a gym. Their equipment is well maintained, and covers just about everything. Everything comes together to provide a good workout experience. Their staff however make this gym much better than most, in particular is personal trainer Jeff—one of the best ever!
I've been a member for nearly three years. My experience with staff and equipment has been consistently positive, but I'd like to hilight one standout employee-- Marshall is upbeat, knowledgeable about fitness and nutrition, and his customer service is superior. I highly recommend Hollywood Fitness.
Been going here for well over 10 years. It's the perfect Average Joe's gym--cheap, no pretense, lots of equipment, and a clientele with manners. Sure 24 Hour Fitness will give you a pool and a hot tub, but then you have to suffer through working out there, and who wants to do that?? #supportlocal
I have been a member for around 2 year at Hollywood fitness . The staff and owner( Gorge ) are great, they are always ready to help. I have also done some personal trainer time with Matt Chandler. He is one of the best trainers I have ever had over the years. I highly recommend Matt and the gym.
This place is amazing. The facility is top notch, the staff are extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Their equipment is well maintained, and their prices cannot be beat. If you're in the area and you want an awesome gym at an affordable price look no further. 5 stars isn't enough.
This is the perfect gym. No nonsense! Not to mention Jeff, the very best personal trainer! Jeff helped bring out my strength and determination that I never imagined I had. He was so supportive and knowledgeable, and let me lead my experience based on my goals. Thank you Jeff!
I left MŪV to come here. Clean, friendly staff, MUCH less expensive. Busy time, as expected, between 4-6 pm, but even then it's not nearly as busy as other gyms. It's got a more down to earth feel, where the partrons are there to work out and not make tik tok vids.....
Lots of equipment and free weights. The staff is helpful but not over the top like some gyms. I like that the place has a smaller gym feel to it. Not corporate. It's affordable and offers almost everything you need. Can be a little dusty but that adds to the charm.
Inexpensive gym that's open 24 hours. There's usually always room on the machines and they're not constantly trying to sell me stuff or get me to upgrade. Basically they leave you alone unless you need assistance or sign up for a trainer, which I really appreciate.
Such a great local gym. They have a huge weight training room. Great selection of cardio machines and a nice studio for classes. And their membership fees are very reasonable. They also have some of the nicest staff I've ever encountered at a gym!
I've been coming here for a while now, and I think it's a great gym. There are plenty of machines and free weights, and different cardio options. The staff are friendly and helpful as well, say hi to Jeff when you come in!
Amazing gym with friendly staff! The wait time to use equipment is very minimal so you can get in, workout, and continue with the rest of your day. If I find myself back in Portland, I will definitely renew my membership.
Best gym you’ll find for the price. Lots of free weights which a lot of gyms lack. They have plenty of machines too. Great for anyone of any age. Don’t expect the locker room luxuries of expensive or big-corp gym.
Been going here for 5 years. The staff makes you feel like you belong. Great classes, not crowded , and reasonably priced. Jeff has been my trainer for 5 years which should show how much I like working with him.
Love this gym. Relatively small, but with all the machines you need and then some. The locker room is clean, the staff are super helpful, and the membership price is hard to beat. Def recommend.
I love this place. So affordable and always clean facilities. Great locally owned business with such a friendly and welcoming staff! Kudos to mashall and mike for all their hard work and help.
Employees are super friendly, equipment is all in good condition, and the place looks nice in general. This is my first gym membership, and I think the price is pretty reasonable.
This is a great gym with an amazing community! The staff is extra helpful. Specifically Marshall! He is always helping me and creating a great vibe in the gym!
A great gym... very clean, and the machines are in good condition. People are nice to each other. Friendly staff. Great place to work out with friends!
gym is one of the best gym I have been too. The gym members are really friendly and even help you with your workout. They have really good staffing.
There's definitely better equipment but you won't find and owner and staff with more heart. They really care about this business and it shows.
Good, basic gym. Affordable price. Trainer Jim is awesome—great guy who knows his stuff. Matt at the front desk is friendly.
The guy who goes by the name Austin is awesome. Great Service. If anyone deserves a raise it’s this guy. …
Only gym in Portland open 24 hours and locally owned. They have amazing, personal trainers as well! …
Great, serious gym with all the gear! Friendly staff too - Marshall is great, knowledgeable and very helpful!
Great service, good machines and 24/7
