I have stayed at nice hotels in many (many) places around the world, including many major US cities, Italy, Germany, Paris, London, Ireland, and numerous hotels in many parts of Madagascar. The Carlton is the nicest hotel in Antananarivo. Why only 3 stars then? 1. It advertises itself to be a "5-Star Hotel" to "Carlton" standards. Sorry, but I've stayed in nice Carlton hotels, and this one is not 5 stars ... this one is not 4 stars, but it is close - somewhere between 3.5-4.0 stars, which, in Tana, is the best you can find. The Colbert claims to be 4 stars (5 depending on who you ask there), but it is 2.0-3.0 stars max. Bottom line, I really dislike when hotels 'sell' themselves as better than they really are - it's false advertising and not appreciated by travelers who get somewhere and are then disappointed. 2. The restaurant is sub-par. I have eaten at the restaurant for numerous meals, over many years (I travel here annually for work). The restaurant has always been a last-resort choice of mine. The food is prepared well, but the menu is small and quite lacking - there are not many 'normal' food choices that would appeal to the masses. They have an English menu, but food choices are odd and unique. Poor selection. The breakfast buffet has a decent selection, but at 39,000 Ariary, it's just not worth the price. To emphasize my point, this year, I brought some food with me (canned soup/pasta, instant oatmeal, etc.) - I love good food and the money is no issue ... I have been eating my canned food rather than eating at the restaurant. However, not to worry if you stay here, because the restaurant at the Colbert Hotel is much better with more options, and just around the corner from the Colbert Hotel is the Nerone (Italian Restaurant - owned and operated by a bone-fide Italian man - he is a friend of mine and an excellent host). The Nerone is my favorite restaurant in all of Tana. Pros: the rooms are clean, the staff is friendly, the hot water is consistent (which is not the case anywhere else in Tana - especially at the Colbert), the bathroom is more like a nice US bathroom than any other hotel in Tana, the bed is a real mattress (unlike the solid foam pad you will encounter at all other hotels - including the Colbert), the high-speed internet in the room is fast (fast enough to steam video in fact) and consistent (not the case anywhere else - including the Colbert, where the in-room internet is slow and inconsistent, and in some rooms just no available at all). The view is fabulous (not that I care much about that, but some do, so trust that it's great). The in-room heat/A/C is great (the Colbert's in room climate control is primitive and poor quality - if it even works). If you have your own car, there is plenty of free private parking and 24 hour security both in and outside the hotel. Cons: it is not close (walking) to any major shopping areas - you will need to take a taxi. The in-hotel shops are extremely over-priced - don't buy anything at the hotel - go to the local artist shopping areas and local mall(s) instead. Restaurant is lacking in good "normal" food choices and has a limited selection in general (one night they also served me stale bread ... not impressive). All that being said, I will stay here from now on because it's the best hotel in Tana. But don't be expecting 5-star accommodations.
5 star luxury hotel by the ritz group in Antananarivo, madagascar. Well maintained and spacious property, but the lighting in the rooms is warm and dim that gives it a old school look and feel, otherwise Rooms are comfortable. Staff is friendly, and helpful. They dont have indian food on the menu, but the chef tried to cook some dishes for us after much request and guidance. It was a good attempt. They also have a night club in the premises, named Kudeta urban. It has live music. Overall experience was good.
Stay away from Casino inside of Carlton Hotel! They not just cheating on costumers by setting up illegal limits on bits - they can easily beat you up in the face, offend your women or friends and be unpunished! None of country in the world, I have not seen such rudeness and mayhem from the casino manager. How come the government let happened such an open form of racism by foreign nationals in relation to their own citizens! It's just a shame!
Travel Back in Time to Classic Tana- once a very extravagant and spared-no-expense Hilton Hotel in the 1960s, in modern times the hotel has aged to a point no renovation can mask. However, it still has a classic elegant charm. Rooms are small but comfortable, great views of the lake. Breakfast included is decent, pool is quite nice. AC is decent, WiFi seemed acceptable but not super fast.
Although the furniture and the decoration is a bit old, the hotel in general is very clean and quiet. Located, just at the heart of the Lower city. The breakfast is however kind of poor and it can be improved. Free wifi is working without problem. I didn't use the pool but it looks clean and well maintained as well.
Great entertainment over New Year's eve. The band was superb, played and sung to music from all over the world. Friendly staff that can speak both English and French. The food wasn't that great but the ambiance was excellent.

I stayed here for 2weeks during my trip to Madagascar. It's a very cool hotel, with great room service, restaurants, bars, gym, gift shops and a night club. It was quite close to my office so I could simply walk and not have to beat the traffic. Will recommend to anyone visiting Tana
Located in the center of Antananarivo, it is easy to spot as it is one of the few tall buildings in the area. In terms off accommodation it is up to satisfactory standards. If you go down to the restaurant, I especially recommend the sea bream fish which was quite delicious.
Wonderful hotel with great staff. They visibly work as a team and the experienced ones help the trainees learn which is great to see. Excellent labguage skills from the staff. Some of the best customer service skills I have seen in a while, great work Carlton hotel

Great view, Great value
Good location and lobby recently refurbished. But the rooms could be improved. And please, stop making guest pre-pay for the rooms and meals! There is a way of blocking an amount on the credit cards rather than actually debiting the card!
Friendly staffs at the reception. Old hotel but very well maintained. Very nice view. Easy access to other places of Tana city. Very clean hotel. For me its outstanding experience.

Don't walk alone at night outside hotel gates.
A very clean and organised place in the midst of chaos and disorder. It is well appointed, with courteous staff, good bar and restaurants, a very good swimming pool and 24 hour room service. The food is good
Nice location with a nice views on Anosy lake. Food is not good. Rooms are clean. For food, I would recommend the Citizen which is on the other side of the lake, plus it is cheaper and super super good!
It's a very good hotel. Secured, clean, excellent service. You can change money at the reception and there is a good bar and restaurant at the hotel. Most recommended for stay at Tana in Madagascar.
Warm welcome and top notch service from the entire staff. Carlton Madagascar offers all luxuries that you need to recover and enjoy the city of antananarivo or any trip you have planned.

Nice rooms and spacious. Restaurant with variety of dishes. Try the lamb chops and you will love it. Tight security and friendly staff
Beautiful hotel and restaurant. Old fashioned French architecture. Sort of stuck in time. The bar and night club is really nice
Enjoyed my stay here. Rooms are comfortable with great view of Tana. Breakfast is lovely to set you up for a great day ahead.
Rooms smell bad. Staff tries to help you but furnitures old. Gym is nice. Breakfast so so. Try pitza besides swimming pool.
This used to be a former Hilton hotel. It's the most luxurious hotel in the city. Close to the lake and the Angel statue.
Old fashioned hotel. Donf be misled by the brand of Carlton. You won't find anything amazing there except high prices
Nice staff but the decoration is outdated, can hardy deserve the 5 stars it has. Disappointing to say the least
Great food, excellent chef. Poor internet, disspointing as it made a business trip complete disaster.
I love to stay at this place. Great view and closer to most popular restaurant and bar
Over-rated and expensive. Food is reasonable. Rooms are comfortable. Great pool.
Food was not great but the room was super comfy. Also enjoyed the gym.
Excellent service makes this rather dated product feel like home
Good effort considering the general state of the country.
A wonderful view from the Carlton Hotel in Madagascar
A bit outdated and expensive. But decent atmosphere.
Needs a lot to work on ... standards still quite low
It's a five stars facility with very welcoming staff
Needs a major update but personnel are really nice.
Perfect service in adequation with the standings
