Honestly, I had high expectations... but what I encountered didn't match the hype. They've got a DJ blasting excessively loud music - it's not an overstatement. And the content of the music? Highly inappropriate and crude. Upon arrival with my 14-year-old daughter, the tracks shifted from innocuous lyrics like 'I don't want no scrubs' to an incredibly explicit language. It was a terrible experience. We made a swift tour around the premises, only to find the exhibits quite underwhelming. After taking a few photos, my daughter remarked on the distasteful lyrics being blasted... it was simply appalling. I'm baffled as to why this museum chose to represent our Black culture, particularly women, in such a vulgar manner. I'm beyond disappointed. I can not, in good faith, recommend this institution to anyone. Such a letdown.

stopped in while visiting Houston and was definitely impressed. it’s a small museum, with a little parking lot out back, build into some kind of an old building with exquisite and unique architecture. I’d say looking through everything shouldn’t take much longer than an hour or so. but an hour well spent! the Afro-futurism exhibit available when I visited was enchanting, but all of the exhibits just displayed such talent and skill going into pieces with haunting commentary or emotive expressions of the hope and dreams of a community. the museum doesn’t charge necessarily for entry, but asks a $5 donation per person, and for sign-ins, and that donation is more than deserved. my only complaint is that the building itself wasn’t easy to navigate for those with disabilities, but all things considered it was a worthwhile visit- I certainly am taking home some names of artists I’d love to see more from!
HMAC is one of the smaller museums in the city, but it still provides 2 floors of content. The museum is currently free with the option of donations. Both floors contain exhibitions, but the 2nd floor space allows room for large size works to be observed from a distance. The first floor also contains a gift shop that contains art for sale, African apparel, books, and more. In addition, there's an elevator on site to accommodate those in need. HMAC is a credible space to view contemporary African American art, get informed on current social/political issues in the black community, and get exposed to provocative visuals. Whether visiting during lunch or spending extended time interacting with the art, it's worth the visit. I recommend visiting during a day of clear skies. The interior lighting is modest, and the natural light from the museums windows can be a fairly gloomy on a cloudy day.
We tried visiting this museum on Saturday, February 13th, at around 1:45 pm. We scheduled an appointment as requested on the museum website. However when we got to the museum, it looked like it was closed. There was only one car in the parking lot that looked like it was abandoned. We tried calling to see if any staff were there, but we got no answer. I saw that there was a review on here from just 2 weeks ago, so I assumed we would be able to visit the museum as planned. I'm not really sure if they were just closed due to the weather because there was a winter storm warning for later in the weekend or if they were closed due to covid. But either way, this should have been posted on their website or on their answering machine/service if they have one. I was looking forward to visiting. And will definitely change my review if we get the chance to visit and have a better experience.
I visited this museum this past Saturday afternoon while I was visiting the Houston area. Because of the COVID-19 the museum is operating on limited capacity, and visits are by appointments only. Which I was unaware of when I dropped in, but the young lady that was working was super friendly and helpful. She informed me that they wasn't busy and if I could go online with my cellphone....that she could get me in for the 3pm appointment. The museum itself is very beautiful and not to large, so all I needed was maybe a hour. All the artwork was very nice and I'm sure that I would visit them again to see any new pieces. Their elevator was not working during my visit, and since it was 2 floors....it's not currently handicapped accessible. Note.....The museum has it's own parking lot on the side, so there is no issues with parking.
This museum is a hidden gem. We went with some friends who were visiting from Arkansas and it was a wonderful and educational experience. It was enlightening and interesting to see Black art and culture on display here. The TV monitor that was on a loop showing one family's experience with police was mind-boggling. It needs closed captioning since it was sometimes hard to hear what was being said over the music that was being played as part of the documentary. Entry is free but there is a place to give donations. There is also Black art, clothing, jewelry and purses available for purchase. It's a small museum but packed with Black culture.

Houston's Museum of African American Culture is the sister institution to the African American Library, located in the historic Freedman's Town. The Museum boasts a beautifully renovated facility that houses two floors of gallery space and classrooms. Socially engaged exhibitions bring to the fore relevant conversations about African American history and politics, with a keen eye on Houston's specific African American heritage. Come to view the featured Houston artists in the Bert Long Gallery or to participate in the many offerings the museum hosts. Don't forget to sign up for the newsletter and donate to support the institution as much of it's funding is dependent on community support.
Came in from Seattle and looked forward to bringing my daughters here for their birthday weekend. Walked in the door and in was empty, no customers….. great the whole place to ourselves. Was told the card machine is down, cash app or zell…. Give you the best price which the quote was higher then online. Went to pay online, was then told the manager prefers if you pay them directly…… back to cash app/zell etc. Was not comfortable with how things felt, the one thing my twins wanted to do, they said no to at this point, no longer were comfortable.

I went when they had Sandra Bland exhibit on the top floor (February, her birthday month). Parts of the exhibit I couldn’t bring myself to watch because it was too painful. They did a great job painting a picture of Ms. Bland’s life. They had furniture from her home, her obituary, flowers that were from her home going service, videos of her speaking about injustice, and the actual video of the day she was pulled over by a cop. It was a lot to take in. The museum did a wonderful job with this display.
I was not planning on visiting there today but I was in the area and decided to go for it especially because it’s free. The museum was presenting the « Negative Women » consisting of 4 different photographers; Ciara Elle Bryant Tanya Habjouqa Mari Hernandez Letitia Huckaby It consisted of beautiful art and photography with interesting history behind them. I learned about the existence of Afro-Palestinians. The museum also consist of a store where you can buy available art, clothing, jewelry etc.
I wish that I was able to visit. I came today to visit, just to find out that they are closed for a special event. This is the first time in several years I was off of work during their business hours. So I’m definitely disappointed. Doesn’t look like I’ll be able to experience it. I travelled over 50 minutes just to come. I would definitely advise calling ahead for make sure that they are actually open during business hours. Can’t trust times online. But I appreciate the concept in the city.
It was great to learn about a new-to-me artist, El Franco Lee, II. Depending on when you visit, this may not be the exhibit. The staff was friendly & helpful. The elevator was not working the day we visited, so the experience was limited to the first floor if you had mobility issues. There is no entry fee, but they do ask for donations. There is also a small gift store.

The word "Museum" should be used loosely when referred here. This space has some great featured art for the month. I really enjoyed the pieces. And there happened to be are really good speaker, (famous and everything) on the afternoon that we visited. But I was highly disappointed as I was expecting to see artifacts and historical pieces and more featured artists. You know, a real museum. But I bought a "indifferent" shirt to support the exhibit they have on display upstairs.
Great place, nice staff, I was slightly disappointed that there were only two exhibits. I've been traveling to differents states/cities checking out African American museums exploring my heritage. I drove 10 hours to get to Houston. I was hoping that this museum would be on par with the Griot (St.louis) or the Odell S. Williams (baton rouge). Especially since I discovered that Houston is about 25% black. Anyway, I will try to donate, they seem to lack funding.
El Franco Lee II is a very talented young man of my generation. I’ve never know of him until I enter the museum today but very well respected. Thank you for being so transparent in your work. The staff were very respectful and alerting when warning us of graphics. Great gift shop and amazing art work of #SandraBland.

It needs some donors with open check books who will see the vision of how the museum could look. It is in need of extensive repairs. I purchased an African Regalia which I wore to the PNC2023 Conference closing gala. Respectfully, United Nations Ambassador Dr. Angela J. Nealy, B.S., M.S., Ph.D.

I Check the museum’s website this morning it shows opening at 11:00. I drove 30 minutes to arrive at the museum and it is closed. I called the phone number and got a voicemail indicating the museum open at 11:00. I just checked the website now it indicates the museum is temporarily closed. This should have been updated yesterday. I am very disappointed I waited my time.

Absolutely, AMAZING!!! There were 3 different displays plus a gift shop with more artwork, books, and other items for sale. My only suggestion is to have the title available of displayed art for sale. I would've made a purchase, but no one could tell me the name. I look forward to returning for the next exhibit and seminar. It's a perfect venue for community forums! ♀️
Good museum they have different exhibitions from different artists. We saw the Franco Lee III exhibit and it was great. Two floors with art everywhere free entry but they do accept donations. Definitely an experience to share throughout the year.

The exhibit was amazing but it was disappointingly small. It only took 30 minutes to take everything in, including the video presentations More time driving than culture. The quality is there but it definitely needs to expand. The staff was professional and helpful There is nothing charged, only a reasonable recommended donation of $5 which I happily paid.
I was expecting more for Black History Month. It toke my group over an hour to get to the "museum". The lady at the front desk was very unfriendly almost rude. It toke us 30 minutes and they wanted a $50 "donation" for a private tour which wasn't private at all. The young man was helpful and the art was nice. Not sure if I'd return in that capacity again.
I visited on a weekday. No waiting period to enter. Great museum but should be named something different bc it mostly exhibits the paintings of one man. Check out room right beside front desk, it is filled with others artists, this was my favorite room. They ask for donations in any amount and to scan qr code go sign in. I was there for about 30 minutes.
I enjoyed my visit! There were many thought-provoking works that reflect past and current social issues. Non-flash photos are permitted. Amid the Covid19 pandemic, face masks and temperature checks are required upon entry. Prospective visitors must register on the website in advance. Parking and general entry are free; however, donations are accepted.
This is a beautiful museum for the culture. The staff was very helpful and the artist was downstairs available for any questions. No admission fee, just donations. Will be returning next time I visit H-town. Peace and power ✊

An overlooked gem in the city. Host to many great local events, art exhibits and artist lectures, as well as community engagements. The staff are very friendly amd helpful. Perfect place to take a small group of art enthusiasts, young and older. We took our senior citizen group. There is an elevator for those who physically challenged.
The museum was beautiful for what it was, it was more of a gallery than a museum. What was on display was beautifully orchestrated and told a brief story from the viewpoint of the selected artist. The gift shop had some one of a kind items that I was more than happy to pay for. Very much needed for the culture, keep up the great work!
This museum was really cool. I like a lot of the stuff on the bottom floor, which I think is where the rotating exhibits are. The second floor has a bunch of sports memorabilia which some people might be interested in. There is also a video about how African Americans used to, and still do, have a history of horseback riding.
This was an awesome experience! There was a $5 donation asked of us. The art was awesome and the history behind it was awesome. There was a small gift shop with items made solely from African Americans.

What a gem. Dominic gives an excellent tour. He is welcoming, warm, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. And most of all, he is genuine - he really listens to YOU, answers your questions, and respects you. The art exhibits were great because they showcased local, Houston artists. And as a bonus, its free admission!
Nestled in 3rd Ward, this museum is amazing. I visited for three reasons; there was a black business showcase and shop going on, there was a live photography exhibit taking place, and there was vegan gumbo for sale in the parking lot! Check their calendar for upcoming events, you won't be disappointed!
I really enjoyed my visit! Clean facilities and open floor plan. I bought my first dashiki from here free entry during certain hours, would visit again when I’m next in town!

I called before I went & wasn't informed that they only had 1 exhibit open. The building is already small, so the size of the exhibit was the size of a small bedroom. Spent 30 min to get there just to spend 10 min there. It was very different, just wish they had more open.
Great atmosphere. Every time I go there is a new artist on display. The curators are friendly and welcoming. Stop by and take a look around.

I try to visit an African American Museum in all the cities and places I visit. Here we visited and encountered the works of Ellsworth Ausby and Afi Ese. The artworks are distinct and piercing. It was a pleasure to visit and see artworks
There are some great art shows happening here. I appreciate that there’s a dedicated space to promoting the work of African American artists. It’s often artists I’m less familiar with and I’m glad to learn about them here. The building
Great experience here while visiting Houston. Bought a Sandra Bland t-shirt (Sandy Still Speaks), watched a documentary on her life, and also viewed a video about natural hair (Transitions). The whole place is lovely and welcoming. The

This was an awesome an amazing experience. To visit while in town for the weekend from Ohio was on our list of to-do. We didn’t have a reservation but were welcomed in and able to tour. Which we were grateful for!!
A small but worthy little museum. The current collections of art and the Sandra Bland exhibit are so important and moving. If you’ve just got an hour or so in this part of town, it’s an excellent place to stop.
My daughter and I visited the Museum during my visit from Chicago. I love the art and collections. Although it was free admissions, we made a donation. We need museums such as this that displays our cultural.
There were two exhibits when I visited. The Robert Hodge one was amazing! So glad I caught it on the last day. Highly recommend to check out his work. The Ann ‘Sole Sister’ Johnson exhibit was also amazing!
I loved this place. It provides great artwork and even saw a few pieces from John Biggers. Staff is great and friendly. I purchased a few shirts and left a donation as there is not an entrance fee.
