"such an adorable and cozy little shop ran by the sweetest family"
i purchased two excellent bottles from this location and i have no complaints about their selection—except that it would be nice to see more skin-contact white or orange wines. however, i can only give two stars due to the incredibly poor customer service i experienced from the blonde woman who was working. although she was just generally condescending, there were specific examples of her rudeness from the second i walked in: she felt the need to “correct” me by stating that the shop isn’t new although it opened just a few months ago (i’ve lived in this neighborhood for over 15 years total and i’ve seen countless shops in that location); she only half-answered my questions using information on the bottle (maybe she just had a limited product knowledge but it felt lazy); she even said “we don’t want everyone knowing where we are, so it’s just if-you-know-you-know” (how pretentious)…for a setting this intimate, i expected decent customer service.
J and J Wine Merchants is a lovely addition to the SE Division corridor. They are tucked into the west end of the building that houses Stumptown and the reborn Woodsman Tavern. My wife was drawn in by the A-frame sign on the sidewalk, and brought me in on a subsequent visit. "Friendly and knowledgeable" is the way I would describe our reception while learning about the bottles on display. J and J occupies a long, narrow space, with wines displayed on the left wall, a couple of small tables along the right wall, and a comfy looking mid-century modern lounge area at the back. They will be doing joint events with their Woodsman Tavern neighbors, combining wine tasting with food experiences, making their location seem particularly auspicious.
such an adorable and cozy little shop ran by the sweetest family. the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable and im always able to pick up a few bottles for a great price.
