"Visiting my sister and chanced upon Modern General in the Beaverbrooke area on Teron Road"
"Mmm mmm mmm delicious! I stumbled across this little bakery after a tip from the Kanata Barber shop (isn't this the best way to discover new places) and despite apologies from the owner that they were low on stock I had a delightful cheese croissant and beef sausage roll, both of which were wonderful"
"Can you please change your closing time to a bit later? Especially now that spring/summer is on the way…"
"Absolutely fantastic bakery - there's a quality here that's elevated above the average bakery in Ottawa, everything here is just better"
"We attended a cooking class this evening and we had such a great time! We left with full bellies, great food to take home and plans to return soon! Laura obviously loves what she does"
Visiting my sister and chanced upon Modern General in the Beaverbrooke area on Teron Road. The lemon bars were perfect: tart/sweet with a short bread crust (?). I have no pretentions to being a food critic so I may have that pastry wrong but it was delicious. We also purchased the most beautiful appearing and tasting Bumbleberry Galette to take along for a weekend visit with friends alongside a sourdough loaf of bread, some yummy buttertarts, and raspberry/ blackberry oat bars. I like my buttertarts with nuts but this is a nut free facility and the tarts were very good. It may be for the best i don't live nearby for the sake of my waistline.
Mmm mmm mmm delicious! I stumbled across this little bakery after a tip from the Kanata Barber shop (isn't this the best way to discover new places) and despite apologies from the owner that they were low on stock I had a delightful cheese croissant and beef sausage roll, both of which were wonderful. And best of all I received this little note, which at first I thought was a complement, but turned out to be a gift voucher for my next visit..... The best places are those that are unassuming, with people that care passionately about their craft and I'm happy to have found another one!
Can you please change your closing time to a bit later? Especially now that spring/summer is on the way….. people who work till 4:00- 5:00 pm, never have the chance to try your products. I didn’t have the chance to try anything yet, my son and I were there at 4:06 pm, it was closed and the lady inside wasn’t keen to look at us, let alone open the door … still, I would like to give it a try ….. thanks. P.s I changed my rating to four stars when I received owner’s response. Best of luck yes, the neighborhood is curious about the bakery….
Absolutely fantastic bakery - there's a quality here that's elevated above the average bakery in Ottawa, everything here is just better. The care and thought put into the products are obvious. Well worth a visit for the baked goods alone, and chatting with Laura is a wonderful bonus.

We attended a cooking class this evening and we had such a great time! We left with full bellies, great food to take home and plans to return soon! Laura obviously loves what she does. She pours her heart and soul into everything she makes and into creating fun and delicious classes. We will absolutely be back for bakery items (well worth the drive from Barrhaven) and more cooking classes. Thank you, Laura for a fun night!
I have sampled nearly everything that Laura makes in house. I have only had one item I didn't enjoy, but that's my pallet and not her baking. The space is open, clean and welcoming. Laura is knowledgeable and friendly. The food is excellent, bordering on exceptional. The price is also exceptional for the portion size and quality. This is a weekly stop in and load up for anyone wanting delicious bakery offerings.
Any owner, after reading a negative review would try make it right or express somewhat remorse towards the client. I find your response condescending. Working by yourself and being a women does not mean you can skimp on quality. I can imagine you work hard . This can be a reason for poor quality or an abrupt response toward an unhappy customer , never an excuse.
Love Modern General. The goods are fantastic and Laura (the baker and proprietor) is a trip. Worth the visit, especially for the croissants and baguettes. It’s great when seemingly simple food is elevated to art. After seeing the discussion about butter tarts in these reviews I had to try one. It was delicious. Worth your money for sure.
Awesome bakery in Kanata! So many epic baked goods from treats to breads. Love the granola and the Tomato Jam! My husband and I attended the Stittsville Butter Tart Festival and bought the "Modern" Butter tarts - so unique, made with shortbread! Even tasted a special Bourbon Butter tart and will be special ordering some of these!
Took a trip to the Buttertart fair on the weekend. What a mistake, Bought 20$ worth of tarts to just throw in the garbage. By far the worst tart I have ever tried, and I have had a lot in my years! The crust was like sawdust and the filling like a brike of set gelatin, tasted like eggs. Don't waste your money on these
Amazing new bakery in Kanata. It’s a bit difficult to spot from the road but once you know where it is, you are in for a treat. The place sells yummy baked goodies and bread. They also do cooking classes for all ages. The lady working at the bakery is super friendly and helpful.
I absolutely love the raspberry oat squares from the Modern General!! The ample squares can be cut perfectly into four small squares. The tart raspberry topping contrasts with the satisfying and filling oat base. I have served them to guests several times this summer.
Don’t buy your baguettes from the grocery store if you’re close to here. It will change your life. Amazing service, 10/10 treats. Highly recommend the egg and cheese croissant. Best thing to happen to the neighbourhood since Brett’s!
This place needs to learn how to take NO for an answer. Not necessary that the customer is right, but because there is always someone else's opinion. In addition, very high prices. Came from Carp, not worth the trip.
Just had one of their apple crumble muffins. Super fresh and so tasty. Lots of other tasty looking choices available including, my favorite, strudel. Hidden gem on Teron Rd. in Beaverbrook! Highly recommend.
Great new bakery in Beaverbrook with nut and gluten free options! Laura (owner/baker) is very welcoming and her cooking classes are a great way to develop your cooking/baking skills. Would highly recommend!
Amazing bakery in my backyard! and not just backed goods, the bourbon cherries are to die for! Thanks for bringing your talents to our neighborhood!
Amazing place. Owner goes above and beyond each time we visit. Best butter tarts we have ever had! So gooey with a shortbread twist.
A must visit in Kanata! The lemon tart is my absolute favourite!

We love all of the freshly baked goods. Stop in at least once a week for a loaf of bread, scones and cookies.
I’m so lucky to have this place less than a 5 min walk from home! Current favourite: apple turnover
Amazing bakery in Beaverbrook. Like Brett's Ice Cream, it brings life to the neighbourhood.
Wonderful treats. Bought some for my family and they loved them. And generous sizes too.
Amazing quality , fantastic customer service. 100% would recommend.
Delicious! Great quality, great service - Will be back again
