Hanging Out with George I took the time to let my curiosity roam and found one of the most interesting free tours in Missouri. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City is an impressive regional headquarters of the central bank of the United States. I’m embarrassed to say that it’s taken all this time for me to explore a site that’s located in my own backyard. Within the buildings design of clean, simple lines, space and pleasing light, is a trove of information, photos, displays and an actual work force on site. Read about the monetary policy and how the Federal Reserve controls the supply and tracking of currency as the regions demand for cash determines it. Through easy to read displays, learn of the supervision and regulation of banks throughout the nation as the Federal Reserve promotes steady growth and expansion in the economy. You will discover how money is distributed to banks as well as what steps are taken to replace worn out and counterfeit bills. A few quick fun facts- Try to lift the 27-pound, 389.27 oz gold bar that was cast in 1959 at the U.S. mint in San Francisco. It takes 24 minutes for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to print 10 million new 100.00 bills! In 1988, the bank pneumatic tube messaging system, installed in 1921 was taken out of commission. If you spent one dollar every second, it would take 15 months before you spent 40 million dollars. During your visit, check out the Truman Coin Collection then make your way to the cash vault to view money being counted and stored. Overall: This free self-guided tour is a great way to get a better understanding of the Feds purpose as well as introducing children to the importance and value of saving, investing and that money doesn’t grow on trees!

There is so much to learn, and everything is presented in such an easy format to take in. Lots of great little activities and exhibits for kids. There are some activities that are better for younger kids, like creating your own dollar bill (they have a station with a blank currency note and crayons, where you can shade different patterns that are embossed off the table), but there are even more activities that are good for older kids, like learning the distinction between wants and needs, and balancing your activities to meet your budget goals. There was a film playing when we got there, which talked about the history of how the Fed came to KC, and although I didn’t get to watch all of it (my 4 year old was tired) I found it fascinating and informative. It’s fun to be able to take home a little bag of shredded, unfit currency too. Each visitor can take one bag, and it’s branded with the “billion dollar experience” logo. All in all, a very fun, free experience. Would highly recommend!

I was not expecting this place to be THIS much fun but when I entered it was like I turned into Mr. Krabs and started singing about money, money, money!!! The historical aspect of this museum is amazing! Being able to see all of the oldest coins really is a unique treasure of this museum. The interactive exhibits are incredibly fun and the whole place is just perfect even with small kids. Well laid out, lots to do, and the fact it’s free makes it even better! Takes about an hour to walk through and see everything but you could stay a lot longer if you didn’t bring kids! Definitely make this a stop on your KC trip! It’s honestly the coolest thing to see!

Located on the ground floor of the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City, this interesting museum has displays that tell a lot about money! But my 7-yr old grandsons were not mature enough to enjoy this like they might when they are a little older. There is way too much to read and not enough interaction for kids of that age, and who wants to listen to Granny read about money, anyway? There are some photo props that are kind of fun but not the right height for my kiddos. They did like the small bag of shredded currency (approximately $83 worth) and were surprised that they didn't have to pay for it. It would have been fun to see the shredding process.

You can't beat a free entrance. The museum is open during the weekdays and closed on the weekends and is currently only accepting those who have reserved their tickets online in advance (circa late 2021). It's a super small self guided tour that starts off with a Harry Truman coin collection. The exhibit next to it contains colorful and visual infographics on the history associated with money. After the exhibit, you can walk down a large hallway containing information that leads to a viewing area off limits to cameras. This area contains thick windows for tourists to view the actual processing and handling of money buy the federal reserve employees. Overall, it's a nice free thing to do that won't take up more than 30 minutes to an hour of your time. Enjoy.

Good lesser known museum with history and explanation of the Federal Reserve system and its KC branch. Truman collection is a great display of US coins. Nice low key staff, considering that you can see millions of dollars here. Minus one star for some electronic displays didn't work correctly, some needed updating to 2020 statistics, and coin collection could use more explanatory materials. Tip: Pick up KC Fed publications on the way out. District magazine is excellent, and research papers are great for those interested in economics. Don't forget your shredded money, too! As of winter 2022, free tickets required but available same day.

We really enjoyed the Money Museum. It was really interesting to see how coins and paper money have evolved over the years. The other very interesting thing at this museum was to see the vaults, huge amounts of cash, the robots that move the money and the money sorting room. The security guards we fun and engaging. They have a solid gold bar you can lift or try to lift and the guard pointed out and gave helpful tips to try and lift it. A couple of things to know, you cannot take photos of the vaults and sorting room. Also they are only open during the week so plan accordingly. Be sure to grab some shredded money on the way out.

Where do I begin? This explains a thing or two about money....and then some. (Like yo dollas are actually part linen.) To me, one of the most impressive features/exhibits of the place, is the Truman Coin Collection on the wall first thing as you enter. Almost every coin ever minted, displayed by Presidential Administrations. A gold brick you can touch, and yes a "Wall of Money." Millions upon millions....or nowadays, Racks on racks on racks, of CASH. Staring at it is like nothing I've ever experienced. The building is a large, imposing, modern structure with a stunning glass lobby. The history will leave you looking, and feeling, differently about cold, hard, cash. The bag of free shredded counterfeit is a nice touch, too. Just do it.

The Money Museum in Kansas City is a fascinating and educational experience for all ages. With exhibits showcasing the history of money, including coins, bills, and even a cash vault, there's something for everyone to enjoy. The museum offers hands-on activities for kids, like watching vault robots in action, which our children absolutely loved. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, making our visit even more enjoyable. And to top it all off, the museum offers a unique souvenir bag of shredded money that our kids couldn't get enough of. Overall, we had a fantastic time at The Money Museum.

We were here for about an hour. The first display was a collection of beautifully created origami pieces using American money. Fascinating! The artist had a video and there was an area on a table with colored paper cut to the shape of a dollar bill that you use to make an origami ring. The Harry Truman coin collection story is really neat. I was in awe that many came together to restore his collection after it was stolen. There were neat exhibits and hands on things for kids, lots of photo ops, and you get a bag of shredded money as a keepsake for FREE. Definitely worth visiting!

Bring your i.d. to enter. This is really neat to see so much money! All different kinds of coins on display! Bar of gold. Kids enjoy coming here. Fun watching the robots move the money. Pretty cool getting to take home a small bag of shredded cash from here! This is a great stop any time of year. I've never seen it overly crowded. I would say 7 and up. Check out the mini gift shop too. There's near gifts all money related of course. I've bought some neat gifts from here. Who doesn't love $ dollar sign pasta noodles. You will learn something about money that you didn't know. It is really neat to give money a little more thought.

I did not have this on my to do list.... a local suggested it and so glad they did! This place is so fun. It is a little intimidating entering with the security check but it was worth it! Great look at how money changed over our country's history and fun stuff like watching it being inspected and removed from circulation (shredded). Even got to try and lift a gold bar and see millions of dollars. It's free and you get a gift on the way out!!!

Informative and interactive for all ages, we spent a couple of hours here. Lift a brick of gold, watch employees work with money, and see a portion of the warehouse with the AGVs at work, along with the many small kiosks exhibited. Some of the prices on the wall needed updating with inflation, but the lesson remained the same. Don't forget the bag of shredded money before you leave. Highly recommend! Also within walking distance to the WW1 museum.

We took our lower-elementary-age kids to the Money Museum, and honestly we thought they might last about ten minutes before losing interest. We ended up staying for about 45 minutes and they had a great time! There was lots to see and do, and the highlights were trying to pick up the gold bar, creating their own currency, and seeing the robots carry the pallets into the vault. I would definitely recommend taking kids kindergarten and up!

Just a quick 15 minute walk south from Union Station is this amazing museum! All about the Benjamin's? Then this place is for you. After a quick check in at the door with security, you are quickly greeted by a plethora of different kiosks, all there to engage with you and teach you something you didn't know. From today's currency to the first American currency, you will be amazed at by the collection of everything US money. Its so cool my 6 year old was entertained and carried his free bag of shredded money around the whole time. Definitly worth a visit.

This is a fun little museum. There's a very big and cool coin collection, a 27 pound gold bar you can lift, multiple signs with info, a huge wall of 100 dollar bills, a bin with small bags of shredded money in it that you can take, origami art displays made of money, an area to watch the employees in the federal reserve bank and a few other things on display. It's all free too. I would recommend this to anyone interested in money.

Take some money home with you while you're at it, ( albeit, chopped up into tiny bits...lol). I found this place fascinating! Take a look at what millions if dollars looks like in reality. Learn about rare and valuable coins and paper bills. A plethora of history to draw from! You won't regret coming here. You can bank on it! (Pun intended) :)

It's free (and requires a free ticket that you get online--not sure why go through the hoop but hey, it's the government). There is a nice coin collection that features the main coins created under each president. There are a few interactive displays that might interest kids and you get to see one room of the Federal Reserve Bank where they go through stacks of money to look for bad bills. All in all it will take maybe 20-30 minutes. But did I mention it was free? You even get a free bag of (shredded) money at the end.

It was a unique experience. My family loved it. It is a Federal building so you will go through security measures before entering. Watching the incredible amount of money being made and hauled in forklifts felt unreal. Truth be told, it made me feel like a guinea pig behind those glass windows. All the money you could ever want inches away. Totally recommend you going though. Plus, you take home $83 of finely shredded money.

This museum is part Kansas City’s Federal Reserve Bank and is located by in the Crown Center and walking distance from the national WWI museum. The museum is free. But there is a Airport style security screening and you’ll need to have an ID with you to enter. This place was not exactly what I expected, but still good. Much more geared towards children than adults. It has interactive displays on budgeting, how banks work, etc. It's also a lot smaller than I expected. Tickets must be reserved in advance but are free. Who knew this would be fun? Get the app for all the extra stuff like scavenger hunts. As an adult in learned so much about the Federal Reserve bank system. There are plenty of thinks for kids to do also and each display has one side for adults and the other side for kids. Be sure to try and lift the gold bar, its heavy! From the security screening to the end of the tour everyone was so nice. Don't forget to check out the robots and vault in the viewing area it is something to see!

Interesting place to learn about the Federal Reserve. Some hands on activities for kids. It was free and everyone could take a bag of shredded cash. It's a working reserve bank, so adults need IDs to get in and you have to go through a security check point. Free parking next to the bank. I thought it was ironic that the gift shop couldn't break my $100 bill. It was neat watching the workers handle huge amounts of cash near the vaults. We learned something's and enjoyed our visit.

Took my 2 kids ages 6&16 to the FREE money museum on the non guided tour. There were a lot of other kids there bc it was the summer so it was hard to take time and look throughly at some items. However there were plenty of things to see such as the 27lb gold brick, $100,000 bill, the vault that processes over $4 million dollars per day and has over a billion in storage. You can make your own "dollar bill" in a couple of ways. On your way out you can take a bag of shredded money.

Amazing place. Don't expect to stay a while as it is relatively small. Many cool collections and diagrams for kids. Includes a viewing platform for the inside workings of the vault which anybody will find interesting. Combining the museum with a walk around the WW1 monument and some food at union station makes for a great afternoon out.

Had a fun time at the Money Museum. There is a ton of information there. It is great for kids because they can understand a lot of the information. They even give you a free bag of money! Free admission is nice but there wasn't much to "do" there. Maybe that changes when exhibits come and go but when we went there was a wall of coins on display and that was really about it. They have a large ~30lb gold bar you can try to pick up and they do give you a free bag of shredded money on the way out. But you can be in/out in about 15 minutes. Its also only open "bank hours" so it closes really early.

If you want to know about money and walk out with free samples, this is the place to go. Took our 3 grandsons 9,6 & 4 and they were all in watching money counters and robots hauling money to different places. Don’t forget your driver’s license adults need it to get in. Figure an hour or two depending how much you want to read and or interact. Guards are friendly and love kids. But they are watching!

Pretty cool to see the giant vault where they keep the cash. The depth of the coin collection is also pretty amazing with examples from the early days of the country. Plenty of hands on activities for kids such as props for goofy photos, design your own coin, and, for older kids, testing their strength by lifting a solid gold bar.

If you are interested in our money, Banking and our Federal Reserve system you will enjoy it. It is a self guided tour that will take about 1 hour to 1 1/2 hour. You cannot go into the vault but you can look through security glass into that area. On your way out, don't forget your free bag of money.

The gold part was really cool! Also seeing one of the first U.S penny is really cool! Would recommend for anyone that's a coin collector, History trip, or if you're just in town!

When you enter you are greeted by law enforcement because it is the Federal Reserve after all. They were very friendly and amazing with my kid! There is so much to see and learn. A couple of favorites for us was TRYING to lift the solid gold bar and getting a bag of free money when you leave.

The museum is smallish, but it is great. Where else can you try to lift a 27 pound gold bar or see pallets of money being processed. I will also say the security staff is so courteous and friendly. We could all learn from the example they set. Highly recommend. Takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

This was a great experience! Hard to believe it was free, but they do process $10 million in cash per day... Even the kids loved it, which honestly surprised me! It was very very cool to see the cash processing room. Also, if you are a coin collector, it is a must see.

Such a cool place to take the kids or if you're into old currency or just like history. Seeing the money being counted in the vault is pretty cool but watching the robot but the money away in the endless warehouse of pallets of money is mind-boggling. Enjoy your trip!

The Money Museum at the Federal Reserve bank in downtown Kansas City is a very small exhibit. Get your free tickets reservations online. We had a time slot from 1.00 to 3.00 pm. It’s enough to spend 30 minutes to see all the exhibits. Thank you! …

Fun free museum. Not very large though expect to spend maybe 30-40mins at best maybe longer if going with smaller children.

This is a free museum for all ages. Somewhat informative about our current currency. Most of the interactive displays were broken. It's a brief visit for the magnitude of the building size. It's OK. I wouldn't rush to go back anytime soon.

There is a place for people to do rubbings, in the center of the large room. If you have sensory issues, it is a lot!

So much fun! Had my 3yo and 6yo children with and they loved the coloring section, the photo ops, and leaving with a souvenir bag of shredded bills! It was a great experience and the staff and guards there were just the best!

We made a quick stop by here on our way out of town. There was no charge at all for admission! It was a great learning opportunity for the children and us. There was no gift shop trap on the way out, so we appreciated that.

Try to sign up for the tour. Educational. Saw what approximately $27 million looked like. Impressive.

Fun seeing all the money, best part is where you see them processing it all. Staff was very polite and told us how much was being handled via note, great to see their staff appreciating being watched while working.

Great little museum - spend an hour or so here. Amazing facts and the shear volume of money they handle is incredible! Very cool display of a coin collection of each variant of coins from the 1800's and forward.

Have taken grandchildren many times.Is always interesting to read all the information there

Pretty cool experiences to be had here. All the staff was very friendly. It was really cool to see them handling such large amounts of money. No pictures of that you'll have to see it for yourself.

It was a nice stop to learn a few things about money. They also give you a bag of shredded money when you leave.
