This is the best bookstore I've been to in YEARS! The owners are amazing, thoughtful and organized with their spectacular SELECTION of books!! After randomly walking to Moon Palace Books after getting some delicious coffee at Peace Coffee several of my friends and I stepped into this clean and unique bookshop! After asking one of the owners questions like ... "Do you know of a funny fiction book that is newish?"... and "Do you have any Kate Dicamillo books?" .... She was able to answer every question I asked offering suggestions (that I took) and finding all of the books I needed. I was able to get some personal books (which I have been looking for months!), some gifts for my mom (totally cute and appropriate) and some sassy quirky books (full of swear words) for my friends! My friends and I will be back for more Christmas, Birthday and ANY holiday shopping! GO GO GO to this great shop! You won't be disappointed! :)

I was enchanted at how promising this book store looked from the outside! On the inside, not so much unfortunately. The staff seemed indifferent as I had absolutely no interactions with them within the entire half hour I was in there. It was a busy day though, so perhaps they were just preoccupied? The labeling of the different genres/categories was practically nonexistent. Everything in there just felt like I should’ve known where everything was, but I couldn’t spot a particular pattern. Again I spent at least half an hour in there and just didn’t see anything that caught my fancy even though I picked up about 20 different books. I ended up leaving empty handed and disappointed.

Moon Palace is my favorite book store in the Twin Cities. Love the local emphasis within their broad range of offerings and feel so at home in their queer-affirming space. The staff are knowledgeable and welcoming, happy to be sharing an interest in books, whatever you may be searching for. They have most newer things I've gone in looking for (approx. five or fewer years old), and often pleasantly surprise me by having older and/or lesser known titles in stock. I love that they augment their new books with a used selection. I would happily browse for an hour or more in pre-covid times and am now so grateful to be able to shop online and easily pick up at the store.

A friend and I love thrift stores and book stores, and good food. Anyway we saw the name Moon Place Books and like the picture we saw online so off we went. We loved the store front and the look inside. But didnt make a purchase. We were disappointed that the used book section did not have much to offer in paperbacks or mystery's and books were not alphabetized by Arthur or at all. I found a interesting paperback but felt it was not worth $9.00 dollars. However it was a author I had not heard of and later found that his books did go for a higher price. If we wete in the neighbor again we might pop in but would not make trip just to go there

I go here frequently and I can finally say: it’s overpriced but worse, staff are rude. For a place that strives for inclusion it’s crazy how elitist and mean they are. One example: “Is there tax on that?”, “no, so you can leave now”....and I go here frequently for shows (that are $7-$10 for local acts) and coffee because I want to support the small business with politics seemingly inline with mine. I hate to say it but I’ve been given no other choice, I’ve been talked to like a child too many times at Moon Palace and I’ll never go back. Great book selection though!

A liberal book enthusiasts dream! Moon Palace Books is chalk full of interesting titles, with sections dedicated from everything to music and political humor- each sprinkled with giftable finds. Hand-crafted cards and totes makes this the perfect place to pick up a last minute present. Upstairs, they even have a used section for the price concious consumer. When you're done browsing, enjoy a beverage and snack at their Geek Cafe (with patio) a place serving up a great local tap list. Moon Palace is a must for those making a day of traversing Minnehaha Avenue!

  • Laura Sudz

Really neat bookstore with a cafe inside that has both coffee and alcohol. Lots of books to choose from including a great children's section. Lots of adorable stuffed animals. Cool tote bags, stickers and magnets. The employee's write little descriptions of some of their favorite books or books of interests at the time and those are neat to look at. Also they have a wall of books and corresponding book clubs. The books that are being reviewed are sold at a discount price and the dates of the book club are available so that you may join them.

Wonderful magical place. Go upstairs and relax with a book at a comfy window side table! Browse their pre owned or new selection! Amazing selection of cookbooks for all types of cooking. That diversity can only be equaled by their selection of lgbtqa focus books! I personally find somthing that changes my heart everytime I go there! There is also a great craft beer selection as well as kombucha and pizza! (Including vegan and gf) great dining area and dance hall! Thank you for existing Moon Palace Books!!!!

This place has an incredibly well-curated selection of books with a used section on the 2nd floor and a cute cafe serving beer and pizza in the back. I was pleasantly surprised how many featured books were authored by women and people of color -- generally when I see that in bookstores, it's on a specific table for "writers of color" so I appreciated that attention throughout the store without just having one table allocated to "under-represented writers." Staff was friendly as well.

  • Kate L

Great selection, nice layout, and friendly/knowledgeable folks. Every time I've requested a book, the staff knows exactly what I'm talking about and either finds it on the shelf or orders it for me. They are lovely people. As a bonus, Geek Love Cafe is in the back, and serves tasty food and bevs (including beer and wine for those "I'm done" kind of days). Love that they have a patio too. ALSO: I have found Moon Palace to be an inclusive, welcoming space. That counts for a lot.

  • Joshua LaMere

This is not your average rub-a-dub bookstore. Haven't conversed with the owner, but it seems that the stocking choices are intentional. When you walk in here you will want to spend your whole paycheck without even thinking twice. There's a good selection of handmade cards, and small "zines" that you can't find anywhere else. An added bonus is the fact it is sandwiched between Peace Coffee & the Trylon Microcinema. You could honestly make a day out of this one building.

  • Leah A.

I just discovered this place when a friend took me. Great little bookstore with a very progressive feel (there's an entire shelf/display for race studies and a lot of pro-queer, pro-science, pro-socialism books). Used books upstairs and a great cafe in the back with some of the best pizza I've had in the Cities. I also ordered a book through them and it came within a week and they texted me to notify me, which was great because I have the millennial phone call phobia.

  • Teeter Dean

I ordered a book online for pick up at the pick up window, and I thought they it wouldn't be ready the next day. NO! They got it ready RIGHT AWAY - like in 10 minutes! I got a text that it was ready and so I was able to go right over there and grab it. Amazing. I had the absolute best service and experience with everyone. No other book store in town would have had a copy of the book I wanted in stock- but I knew Moon Palace would carry it. LOVE LOVE MOON PALACE !

  • Joe de la Cova

The large, shiny, open plan new space for this South Mpls bookstore is a real treat. There is an in-store cafe which makes pizza and has peace coffee. There is also a separate room for meetings or performance space. The well chosen book selection has the same heads-up engaging quality as always, intended to serve it's hip local and larger audience. Some used books in the loft area. Definitely worth a visit. A must for bookstore lovers.

  • Melissa Hansen

Wonderful and inviting local bookstore with a pulse on empowerment and social justice. New (2017) spacious space with new books and a second floor used section. There is a cafe, Geek Love, and an event space. I love to come here to buy books and accessories for gifts. My son loves to come to story time for young children. I appreciate that there are many bathrooms, bike and car parking, and that it is on a bus line near light rail..

  • Sam Rose

this is my favorite bookstore in the city. it’s a couple miles from my place but it’s well worth the visit. genuinely beautiful space, well organized and really solid selection. pre ordering new releases, along with the entire web experience as well is effectively designed + convenient to use. walk up window is awesome, masks available at the front door!!! they’re doin everything right. can’t wait for the cafe to open again !

  • J Z

Really great job curating some books! Really great organization of books, too. I felt like there were a lot of selections, but not overwhelming at all. I really need to stop by again and get more. I was looking for a decent ‘page turner’ recommendation and I got a few. I sadly should only have gotten 2 books, but it’s so nice that it’s off a major bike lane and plenty of bike parking.

  • Mario

As my custom, I visit local bookstores during my travels. This one is another gem. I think they were rearranging the book sections because almost none of the shelves were labeled. But the young lady working there pointed me to what I was looking for. I found some rare books, just delightful treasures I purchased. If you're a book lover and in the area, definitely visit this place.

  • stef bernal-martinez

I’m currently living in an independent bookstore desert and my weekend in Minneapolis was a mission to indulge in books & coffee. Folks were incredibly friendly & helpful, the pizza shop in the back of the bookstore had fresh & yummy by the slice options. I was hugely grateful for the representation of folks of color in their poetry section. I left the store with over ten books!

  • Carlos Acosta

An amazing place to say the least. They have a welcoming community oriented vibe that welcomes people of all backgrounds. The first floor is new books with a second floor for used books. Staff is helpful and friendly. They also have Geek Love Cafe which has great food and they sell beer etc. They have many events throughout the year including trivia. I'm excited to go back

  • Atzín Rayas Fernández

An awesome place that you can feel good about visiting. The cafe in the store is super nice to have available, and there is much to say about the excellence of their sourdough crust and vegan options. Moon Palace also hosts shows and events in the back of their space which makes it a great communal gathering space too! Overall, a wonderful space and well worth a visit.

  • Michelle Bluem

Great selection and enjoyed the couple times I’ve been to Moon Palace! Had a delay with an order after the shutdown and the staff was incredible with their response time, communication, and follow up. Books arrived very quickly after re-stock and I was given several individualized updates on their status. Definitely ordering more from MP in the future.

  • Alise Noel

This wonderfully woke bookstore is full of patriarchy-challenging pages and posters. A warm feeling of inclusion washes over you as you enter, all are welcome. Their cafe is also splendid, they have beer, wine, kombucha, and some vegan options for food. They host cool events and have whimsical artwork. Just being inside inspires creativity.

  • Kristen McCoy

I love this small business so much! Any time we have a kids bday party coming up, we go here and stock up books and/or toys! You can also do gift registries on their website, and their online shopping experience is great too, with local pickup available. The owners are awesome and great members of the community. Can't recommend more!

  • Austin Parlock

Moon Palace Books is a lovely and welcoming local book store. You currently cannot enter the store, but their easy-to-use website and pickup window make purchasing books locally a cinch. And to top it off, the store is co-located with one of the best cafes in town, Geek Love Cafe. I cannot recommend both more.

  • Regina Drake

I have never been in your store...never even been to. your state. I live in Key West Fl....and I just wanted to say THANK YOU FOR STANDING UP FOR YOUR COMMUNITY.....YOU GIVE ME HOPE FOR THIS COUNTRY....I'm 70...but if I could be with you all in person...I would....just know you are supported by the COUNTRY

  • Dan Farrell

Your taste for progressivism and liberality will likely be roughly proportional to your taste for moon palace. Their selection of books is not vast, but they also have a cafe (good coffee!) and a small music venue in back. Unless you dislike explicitly gender neutral bathrooms you should pay them a visit.

  • Jeremy Burke

Really great local bookstore with a beautiful new renovation and helpful staff. They have a great kids section, and the new space upstairs with coffee and such makes it an even more appealing place to stop by. The increased space means a much wider selection of used books too. Definitely recommended.

  • Matthew Amundson

Hooray for an adorable bookstore that has an extra bonus of being trans and queer-friendly! I loved how colorful and warm the space was, while offering all sorts of great books on full display mixed with a fun assortment of greeting cards, toys, notebooks, etc. I bought a book and a few stickers.

  • Andrew Sean

Moon Palace Books is a truly magical and wonderful place, filled with the natural joy of boooyka and knowledge, paired with pizza! This is a space for all, a space filled with light and color and people who express themselves and welcome others without fear, a rarity in this world.

  • Lee Hanten

Had the most wonderful experience here when we were visiting from out of town! The staff is super friendly & helpful, and the shop has a great selection. Got some incredible book recommendations and while I love my current local independant book shop, I may secretly wish I lived closer.

  • Michael O'Leary

This book store has it all. 2 levels of books, a great staff, a room with a stage for public readings, and a quick serve style restaurant with pizza! You can even get a beer, here. It hosts reading and writing groups regularly. It's a great community oriented bookstore and so much more.

  • lucy b

lovely place!! I’m always looking out for notebooks, stationery, etc, and moon palace books didn’t disappoint. the books are well curated and the store has a welcoming vibe. masks are required, but they provide some at the door. definitely check it out for a gift or new book to read.

  • jl hatlen linnell

Nice shop! Wide variety of books, with a cozy cafeteria restaurant on the side. I'll be back to more fully investigate the used book shelves upstairs. I also love tgat that know the pizza at the diner is a draw, so they have wet wipes handy so you're ready to browse book and comics!

  • Sharon Warwick

So many reasons to love this place, free parking, two floors with a large selection of books (new & classic, will even keep books often called for in stock), unique gifts galore, greeting cards, friendly staff willing to help, a small cafe. Be sure to visit - you will love it, too.

  • Evan B

Curated, new books! I expected a bigger selection, but the books they have out are very hip/cool/new/topical. A very progressive vibe. The upstairs and the cute restaurant they have in the back were both closed when I visited. Both look cool. Hope they are fully open soon.

  • patch

What a great little bookstore and Cafe!! excellent pizza ,salads, breakfast, coffee .etc.. Pizza available by the slice if you're not hungry for a whole pie... nice atmosphere... relaxing ...great staff,! .... glad we stumbled across the store.... will definitely be back!!

  • Steven Dubois

Moon Palace Books is a a great bookstore. The staff is friendly and the layout of the place is amazing. The best part is the back area for me its called Geek Love Cafe. They sell wood fire vegan-friendly pizza by the slice and great coffee. All in all its a great place.

  • Terry Horstman

I could spend all day in here. The food in the cafe is delicious. The book selection is endless and the presentation is beautiful. There’s also a fantastic event space in the back that they take full advantage of. Checkout their calendar for upcoming readings and shows.

  • Katja Amyx

I went to the store to pick up an online order. The store does not allow people inside to shop yet (as of 6/1/21), so there is a little window on the side for pickups. Service was very fast. I happened to be there when the farmers market was open, so that was fun, too.

  • Josephine Walker

Such a cool bookstore with a cafe right inside! The books are all arranged in an interesting way. They have pins and patches and awesome artful stickers too! A fantastic book cafe- definitely will come back for a good hang out spot, date spot, or study/reading spot.

  • M.O. E.

Discovered this place due to joining a new book club and it is really nice. All book lovers must visit. Great selection of books, there is a cafe and parking. There are used books available as well. They support book clubs so you should support this business!

  • Luis R

By tradition I like to stop by different bookstores when I travel. I had a really good time. There was a great variety of books, a very homey atmosphere. The staff was super nice and friendly, I bought a book they recommended so I'm looking forward to it.

  • Sally W

This bookstore is so well-curated that I find myself wanting to read everything on the shelves. If you have the time, I recommend grabbing a book (or many!) from here and heading over to Peace Coffee next door to settle into your new literary adventure.

  • Ed Kohler

Well curated store for passionate readers, neighbors looking for books supporting their hobbies, and an awesome kids section. My daughers like to eat a slice of pizza at the Geek Love Cafe in the back before looking at books. Better to not shop hungry.

  • Christian Schultz

Best book store in the twin cities. I used to love shopping there in person for the great selection and knowledgeable staff (not to mention the amazing pizza I'm back.) I'm so glad I can still support them by buying books to pick up though the window.

  • Paul Wichser

My favorite pizza in the twin cities. The crust is unparalleled for chewy thin crust: lots of delightfully toasted bubbles and a perfectly finished toothsome center. Creative flavor combos, vegan pizzas, and classics all hit the spot. It's the best.

  • Adam Check

Great neighborhood book store and cafe. It is fairly small, but the selection is well curated so they usually have what I am looking for (for either kids or adults). The pizza at Geek Love (attached) is some of the best in the Twin cities.

  • Juni

Unique finds! It’s a little hard to find how sections are organized if you’re new and starry-eyed, but staff was so kind, helpful and immediately located the book I was looking for. They also have a really great selection of stickers,

  • Siena Leone-Getten

We went in for one book and ended up buying a bunch of great stuff. They've got a great selection of gifts, and we got stickers, prints and a game, as well as some used books. The whole place is beautiful and welcoming. We'll be back!

  • Bob Barnes

A fantastic little independent bookstore with a great selection of new and used books. They can order anything you want at approximately the same price as Amazon, so I sometimes get technical books for my job (which they don't carry).

  • Aaron Thom

Twice now I have visited this restaurant, expecting to get their skillet breakfast, and twice I've been disappointed by them. Each time, they've told me they just aren't serving that (even though it's front and center on their menu).

  • CJ (based3)

Loved looking through all the books, tons I’ve never heard of. Friendly staff but they still make you wear a mask upon entry. Excited to read this book I got about the toxic dyes we have in our clothes. Cute figurines and bags too!

  • Heather Nicole

The last place on the planet that makes you wear a mask. I’m not a far-right person by any means, but the books in this store are so far left there’s no room for any balance. It would be nice to see various viewpoints represented.

  • Adam Levy

This has been a great local book store for a number of years but now in a new, larger and much more open spot, has gotten even better. Good books and local authors and a many new elements are being added such as a cafe in January.

  • Amber G

Thank you for caring for the protesters who are exercising their American rights by speaking out about injustices in this country. We see you and we salute you. You're setting an example that many have not. Justice for ______!

  • Cathleen Campbell

Lovely store with current books for adults and kids, newspapers and lovely handmade items for sale. Local artists supported. Book clubs meet here. Good food and beverage in shared space with indoor and outdoor seating. A gem!

  • Ha.Pe03 Ymail

Independent book store with a petting zoo of sorts. Great children's book selection. Great Young Adult section. Quirky vibe with hip customer service. If you have young kids this is a must stop if you are in the twin cites.

  • Maggie Ewing

I love shopping for kids' books here. The staff have been super helpful with recommendations when I'm shopping for gifts. They seem to have taken care to stock books featuring protagonists of color and female protagonists.

  • Myranda New

By far one of my favorite bookshops in the Twin Cities! I love the variety of books there, especially from local & small publishers, as well as the diversity of stories. Also, a great place to get cards and gifts.

  • Laura Madsen

Wonderful books for all ages and all kinds of people, primarily in English. They also have fun cards, coloring books, magazines, candles, bags, a cafe with beer, and a small event space. This place brings me joy.

  • Emma C Siegel

Wonderful bookshop with a huge selection! I wish they had more prominent (or any?) labels for the different book categories but nonetheless I was able to get some great finds. Staff are very friendly and helpful

  • Sarah McRoberts

A lovely book shop, with a surprisingly open, clear feeling. Love the selection, and how inclusive the cafe options are. I really want to go to one of their events, but I'm never disappointed to just shop there.

  • Kahley Steinmetz

Small store and the sections aren't clearly labeled, but very cute and the second level has used books and seating options. Nice cafe in the back, small concerts held in the very back. Also has outdoor seating!

  • Sophie Wallerstedt

I really love this space. It's a great space to come peruse the collection, which is well curated. The staff is friendly, and the cafe in the back is a lot of fun! Great place to spend a weekend morning.

  • Amy Jones

Very nice bookstore with cool merchandise besides books. Plus great Cafe right there together. So cozy! Then it becomes a fun venue for local bands in the evening! Staff is super nice. Awesome place.

  • Ellen Pederson

Small but mighty! Inventory included many titles from small press/independent publishers. I was able to pick up multiple books from my wish list that I hadn't been able to find at other bookstores.

  • S. A.

Great place for contemporary and historical books that has a tilt towards highlighting the underrepresented or "suppressed" groups. Their Used Books section and selections is really small though.

  • Mike Patrick (MetlOtter)

Friendly neighborhood book store (though a very large neighborhood book store now!) with a great selection of new and used. The cafe has a small but solid menu, and a great selection of drinks.

  • susan russell freeman

Very informative, looked up tons of info for me. Ordered a special book and put another on hold. Will be spending lots more time here along w/the great coffee and wheat free treats in the back

  • Luke Ries

Moon Palace is a fun, quirky, welcoming bookstore with a lot of interesting local political books and some zines as well. Unfortunately, I found the nonfiction selection was pretty lacking :(

  • Michael Fingerlin

Broad selection of books and a great little cafe, beer and wine too. If that's not enough, the addition of the community performance space makes Moon Palace Books such a neighborhood asset.

  • Michael Calhoun

Really cool spot to find a book on topical social subjects of our times, a good biography, civil justice as well as good selections for teen/children readers. There's also a cafe with pizza

  • Tami Bauers

A real deal local bookstore with Cafe, community space and used books on upper level. This is a new location, but very near their previous ones on Minnehaha. Good parking and great staff.

  • C H (Velard)

Great atmosphere, I really enjoyed attending a performance there. I had never been to Moon Palace Books, I may have to get there to look at books sometime, being that is their namesake.

  • Clint Weathers

If you want a bookstore that is run by people who love books (and people who love people who love books), this is your place. Zines, chapbooks, and a surprisingly good cafe in the back.

  • Gilbert Schweser

Stopped in during independent book store day, Saturday, and was blown over by the crowd of shoppers. Ended up spending the day and most of the night listening to the poetry reading!

  • Rowan Smith

Awesome selection of books, very cool selection of magazines. No used books, FYI. The pizza in the back is really incredible. One of my favorite queer friendly spaces in the cities

  • Dana Lappin

Best local bookstore! Not so easy to find them anymore, so when you do and it just has that special feeling only a local bookstore can have, cherish it and make sure to support it!

  • J.A. Guerrero

The cafe inside the book store is simply TERRIFIC! The pizzas and the coffees are delicious. The service is espectacular, warm people. The book store is a magic place for explore

  • Brittney Collins

Friendly staff, cute little cafe inside, and a small stage/event space for musicians they host! I'll remember moon palace when I am looking to purchase a new book or gift …

  • Joel Luth

Nice bookstore with a good room out back that often gets interesting bands. Staff at the cafe have that aloof, too-cool-for-you air so if that's your thing you'll be in heaven.

  • Brian Keller

The staff always have amazing book suggestions based on what I tell them I like to read. Their book selection is small, but I always leave with something I end up enjoying.

  • Rhianna Peterson

The atmosphere for live music is mellow and cool. There's a good kid's area of the book store, and Geek Love Cafe is right inside. Definitely try the spicy espresso cookie!

  • Torleiv Flatebo

Great local bookstore, with a restaurant inside. Lots of community events going on in the back room, book sales etc. lots of kids books and super kid friendly. Great place!

  • Leah McDowell

Staff is so helpful, helped me find a book when I only vaguely knew what the cover looked like and where it was in the old store, pretty incredible. Chai tea is delicious!

  • Jam Leomi

Love it! They always have a good selection of books and journals and also have the Cafe in the same spot which is cool. I also love how this place supports the community!

  • Tracy Pedersen

Cute store with a nice selection of new books. Staff has always been friendly to me when I've had a question, but they don't bug me if I'm just browsing (which I like).

  • Dingis Dongis

Thia place is an absolute gem Best curation if books around. Live music and art and events where everyone is welcome and can feel safe. The cafe has the best pizza too.

  • Peter Goldberg

Huge space with new and used books as well as coffee and pizza at their Geek Love Cafe. Would be great to hang out for an afternoon or just drop by to grab a good book.

  • Emily McKinney

What a great bookstore! It's more of a discover-something-new type of bookstore than a find-the-thing-you-were-looking-for type of bookstore, which is my favorite kind.

  • Miss A

Yummy food expensive beers and a great mix of reading genres. I came for a workshop I could not afford. They do offer pay what you can events on as case by case basis.

  • Lou Lou

Bought several books here and they are always accommodating. Respectful and advocating the nontraditional. Side bonus that such a rad cafe is connected to Moon Palace!

  • Roxanne De

Quiet, comforting, affirming, and caring bookstore. Very soon to be my second home. I am fully in love with the environment they foster and how friendly the staff is.

  • Amy Singleton

Great bookstore. Our only wish is that they had certain sub-sections, like LGBTQ fiction...you have to have your title in mind as all fiction is mixed together.

  • Sara Schoen

Great local book store. They will order books for you if they don't have what you want in stock. Great pizza too and no need for tips as they pay a living wage!

  • Steven Debner

Nice small independent bookstore. A lot of variety and includes children, young adult and other materials. A great experience to visit a hands-on bookshop.

  • Myra Scholze

Great, fun selection of books. Checked it out because they were participating in the restaurants rising event to support immigrants in Minnesota. So cool!

  • Don MacLeod

Fun, eclectic book store. These are rare beasts these days. It's nice to have a real bookstore with a small cafe in it. Pay attention for author readings.

  • Frank Williams

Great selection of popular books as well as off the beaten path selections. Also check out their Geek Love Cafe for tasty food, pastries, coffee and teas.
