"I realize a 1 star review is harsh, but I'm of the mindset that if a business is providing a service and does not deliver on the service, that's a failure on their part"
"Absolutely top tier bike shop! I would give 6 stars if I could! I went in today and bought my first-ever bike since childhood, and Jeff and the crew were amazing"
"MUST VISIT SHOP!!! Did you get a flat tire? Are your gears slipping when you peddle? Do you love your bike but wish you had a different set of pedals or that your handle bars had a different setup? Then go to new hope"
"This is simply the best place to buy a bike in Hamilton"
"I came to New Hope thinking there was a good chance I wouldn't be able to justify maintaining my old commuter bike anymore"
I realize a 1 star review is harsh, but I'm of the mindset that if a business is providing a service and does not deliver on the service, that's a failure on their part. I normally wouldn't write a review, but I'm a little irked. I was literally just hoping to take the basic bike repair class, which is held once a month around the 15th according to the calendar on this website. I had tried registering a few days prior to the May class, and got no response as to whether a spot was available. I chalked it up to poor timing on my part. I called to check in and hopefully confirm, and possibly bring my bike in for repair, and was told the date had passed and to re-register online for the June course. I sent an email later in May about registering nice and early for the June class. The email contained my name, email and phone number. New Hope responded directing me to a Google form that only asked for my name, email and phone number, which I provided again. Having worked in a digital service environment, I personally would have simply filled in the customer's information for them, but hey, that's just me. After filling in the form, again received no further communication from New Hope. No confirmation that my form was submitted, no follow-up email about the repair class, no reminder email about the class when it was approaching, no confirmation that the class the day of, no anything. I'm glad I went elsewhere for my bike tune-up. I'm sure I would have had to call and email far past the delivery date to find out if it had been finished. At the end of the day: was I able to take the class? No. Was any attempt made to reach out to confirm or reschedule the class? No. edit: I appreciate the owner reaching out below, but I'm no longer interested.
Absolutely top tier bike shop! I would give 6 stars if I could! I went in today and bought my first-ever bike since childhood, and Jeff and the crew were amazing. I'm pretty picky in the sense that I had a few requirements: a bike that allows me to sit upright since I have back pain, lightweight frame, handlebar brakes, and a basket. Despite all these prerequisites, I was matched with an awesome reasonably priced bike that rides like a dream. I got to take both bikes I was interested in for a test ride out front and ended up deciding on the initial recommendation I was given. Jeff even installed a basket I bought the same day for me since the bike didn't come with one! I was also given a bike bell and a LED handlebar light, and was told if there are any issues/repairs needed, I can bring the bike back in for service any time in the next 3 months free of charge. They have a variety of bikes available ranging from around 100 all the way up to 1,500+, so there's something for everyone. The bike I got today was 150 without any of the other things I bought in addition (such as the basket). Highly recommend!
MUST VISIT SHOP!!! Did you get a flat tire? Are your gears slipping when you peddle? Do you love your bike but wish you had a different set of pedals or that your handle bars had a different setup? Then go to new hope. I had a great experience fixing up my bike that needed a tuneup and I wanted some changes for my comfort when riding. I also am not a millionaire and have a tight budget. So I made some time and took my bike to their shop which offers bike repair and tuneup services, however I love learning and love to tinker so I went the route of their DYI option. With their tips and tricks along the way, used/new parts availability, access to all sorts of tools etc, I was able to make my old bike into my new “green beast”! It’s great to learn about what your riding so if something does happen when your out on a trail or in the middle of no where, then you have some knowledge from doing the tune ups and repairs along with their teams help. Great people and community programs so it’s definitely a must to visit!
This is simply the best place to buy a bike in Hamilton. I have 4 bikes and have been a cyclist for more than 25 years. I have been to many bike stores across ontario and Canada. This shop rates among the best. Unlike some shops that are fill of attitude and are willing to sell you a $3000 to show off on the weekend ends. There is no attitude here. They make you feel immediately at home. This shop takes donated bikes brings them back to life and sells them for a very reasonable price. I came here after a bad experience at a second hand sport shop on the mountain. What a difference good service and knowledge makes. Their bike mechanics are some of the best i have seen. We ended up buying two bikes well tuned and adjusted. They did everything they could to make sure we left happy. I will visit them again and recommend them to anyone i know.
I came to New Hope thinking there was a good chance I wouldn't be able to justify maintaining my old commuter bike anymore. I needed a new drivetrain and wanted to convert it to single speed to make maintenance easier but the bike shops I had been to were estimating +$200 for parts and labour which was more than the cost of the bike. The staff at New Hope pointed out there was an simple and affordable way to do the conversion for less than a quarter of what I'd be quoted, and the best part is I was able to learn how to do the conversion in their shop myself with their help. I'm super thankful to have New Hope Community Bikes in Hamilton making cycling more accessible to everyone with this kind of skill sharing and affordable options.
Great value, great people, weirdly excellent ethics. The buy-a-spoke, pay-it-forward program is really nice to see. I took my bike in for a tune up at a time when bikes and bike repair are in unprecedentedly high demand, and they did a great job at a really decent price. A small part I had requested to have installed was done with a good quality used part, so it was shockingly inexpensive. Unfortunately, I had a couple chain derailments shortly after getting the bike back, so I emailed. I was invited to pop by for a same-day adjustment, which worked perfectly and only took about 15 minutes. If these folks don't restore your faith in human kind, I can't imagine what would.
I took my bike in to get my gear cable replaced and gears tuned up. They ended up shortening my chain. Service was quick and well priced. My first ride out my chain broke. I wasn't doing any crazy biking. I was literally going down a street. Not sure if there was a weak point from shortening. I sent them 2 messages and tried calling. No one ever replied or returned my messages. I think a company should stand behind their repairs. At least respond to messages sent. Really disappointed in their customer service. My mom and brother both were going to bring their bikes in for repair because I recommended. Now they are looking elsewhere.
I support community bike shops as I feel they’re services are important for communities and individuals to empower themselves in a variety of ways. However the vibe in here was pretty macho. Senior mechanic seemed annoyed I was asking basic questions about how to troubleshoot some issues that needed some specialized tools. I find it unfortunately common in bike shops that when I display my knowledge of mechanics as a women to be somehow threatening or…..something to male mechanics. Stop assuming women don’t know what they are doing, it’s hella annoying. Otherwise great staff and sweet set up. But the egos, yikes.
Love the program. Bought my bike here very cheap a few years ago and the bike is fantastic!!! My friends see it all over town and know I’m around when they see it. Another friend tried to buy it off me, because my bike is so cool now. Obviously I said no. Haha. It was great seeing young people employed at this store. I’ve never had anything go wrong with the bike, I’ve not even needed new tires. I bought some lights from the dollar store and it was all good to go. I would come back anytime and I highly recommend it.
Don't let negative reviews dissuade you. This is the best bike shop in the city and a fantastic resource to get things fixed properly. I always have a great time whether it's buying used parts, trying out a new bike or fixing up one of my own. They train and hire young people who need a job downtown and provide a great service to everyone who comes in the door. Also the new location is fantastic. Congrats on the community grant! A bright spot on a dreary part of Main in desperate need of a kickstart.
Great place. I dropped by there yesterday to check out what they had for bikes. I bought one from them years ago; a vintage bike and was very happy with the purchase. I now wanted a lighter city commuter. Sure enough the people there showed me what they had and even let me take it for a test drive. I was sold, not only on the bike but the people and total experience at New Hope. I now have a great vintage commuter at a great price. Can't wait for spring!
They are a phenomenal group of people. Highly knowledgable when it comes to bikes. I loved the atmosphere, very welcoming. I went in to get my pedal fixed and they ended up fixing my brakes kickstand and handlebars before I could even say anything they were right on top of it. Pretty sure they read my mind lol This is now the only place I’d trust to get my bike looked at and fixed.
I really wanted to love this place but sadly am disappointed. After I paid for a full tune up my gears & brakes still didn't work properly. When I took it back in they told me everything was as good as it was going to get...so I took it to Downtown Bike Hounds where they identified & fixed multiple problems. On a positive note - they are a good resource for cheap used parts!
My daughter had a triathlon practice meet and this shop helped us get her seized seat out and bought a new one. We have to get the stem extended now that she grew and this will definitely be the place we go to! Love this place we couldn’t say enough great things. Used bikes and bikes for unbelievable prices definitely a go to if you have kids that are growing.
We have taken our family Cargo Wike bike for tune ups and repairs to New Hope since 2013 with great service and quality of work. We've been satisfied with our purchases over the past 3 years on used bikes, a kids bike, helmets, bike locks and a few other cycling accessories and parts, with fair prices on everything. We love this place and what it's all about!
New Hope Community Bikes has moved to a new bigger location at 1249 Main St E. They still sell used bikes, help you fix your own bikes/DIY or they will fix it for you. They have new and used parts. You can donate your bikes and accessories here, to help more people get into biking. They also have worked with thousands of kids to teach them how to ride.
This bike shop is a hidden gem in Hamilton. The guys there are down to earth, friendly and honest. The are so reasonably priced that you think you are taking advantage of them. If you looking for a bike repair shop who will charge you for excellent work, economically and in a timely manner then this is the place for you. You will not be disappointed.
Went here last week looking for a new mountain bike. Andrew helped me out finding the right bike for me, and was very informative in all the questions I had. I wanted to change the quick release on my tires, and he was able to do it for me right on the spot in minutes!! Great service, very friendly, and I would highly recommend them! Thanks Andrew!!
I was in today to buy a new freewheel. When I arrived I was amazed at all the products new and used that had I known, I would have bought in support of this great place! That was then, but moving forward I will visit often. My new freewheel was installed in under three minutes by a super staff member! The price was excellent! Lucas
Excellent place to learn and the staff are super friendly and helpful. Also with a full assortment of tools and spare parts to keep things cheap and reasomable. Hats off to new hope cycle!!! Helping local kids getting turned onto dyi repairs and finding the love for cyclists. Rare place that actually CARES!!!!!!! BRAVO BRAVO!!!!!!
This is the greatest little bike shop in the world! I've been going to them for, a lot of years now! And I'm gonna continue after they move their shop! The Greatest bunch of people work, or volunteer here. And their help is imence! The pictures I have of the place? Are from Friday nights. Where we held church!
I attended the basic bike repair class this evening and it was phenomenal. I learned so much and received lots of helpful information and tips. The instructor, Andrew, was very friendly, knowledgeable and patient. I feel more comfortable with repairs and maintenance of my bike. Recommended …
The incredible (and quickly turned over) selection is backed by the knowledge and kind staff. Everytime I've gone in they've each been nothing but helpful. The workshops I've heard are great as well. The pricing is so fair and very affordable. Only going here for my cycling needs moving forward!
Their tune-up classes are amazing. I went alone, I'm a female, and they helped me feel comfortable doing everything from changing a flat tire, tuning my gears, brakes, and alignment. It was such a great use of my time...plus I learned new skills rather than paying someone else to do it
Great, timely and friendly customer service. The atmosphere is also really chill and laid back, but people are working! It's also kinda cool how they let you tinker around so you can learn for yourself how to fix your bike. I hope God continues to bless your endeavors. Cheers!
An amazing service to the Hamilton community they provide ~ top-notch service all around. All staff cater to each and every single customer and to customer's needs. No questions or concerns are too big for them to handle... & they are always smiling.... Keep It Up NewHope!!
5 out of 5. The customer service experience here is outstanding! I came there the other day and one of the employers fixed my bike and didn't even charge anything. I recommended this place to my friends also because they seem to care more about fixing the issues first!!
I brought my daughter’s bike to get serviced for a minor repair and was very pleased with their quick and very affordable service repair. I will definitely be going back there for any future bicycle repairs or tuneups. Thanks for your exceptional service!!!
I've been going to New Hope for several years now, and am continually impressed by their expertise, attentiveness, and generousity. Each time I have gone to them for help, they have been very quick to fix the issue. Consistently excellent service!
I have recently bought a few banana seat musclebikes . I have dealt with this shop 4 times now in the passed months. The staff have been informative polite and accommodating and made it easy to do business with them.l have received ordered
I recently had my bike fixed here by the team. Not only did they have excellent customer service, but the turn around time was great and I couldn't beat the price. They even sanitized the handles and the seat what I came to pick it up!!
Amazing community based bike shop with services to help anyone with their bike needs. They also give back by helping local kids get on bikes safely along with working with First Nations and bringing parts and skills to share
Fantastic group of knowledgeable bike mechanics. Great customer service. With a heart to serve the community. Awesome volunteer program for our young people. Great discounted for used bike parts. I'll give them 10 stars!
This is hands down the most open, inclusive and community minded shop in Ontario if not Canada. These people do sooooo much for the local community as well as First Nation communities in the North. LOVE this place
I gave an old frame to a guy my sister knows to pull the whole bottom bracket off and put on his bike. #1 They only took the crank arms and NOT the bearings. Replaced a derailer cable and charged he $120.00!
These guys and ladies are awesome, very polite and friendly, they gave me a really good deal on my bike, they even cleaned it, which I really appreciate, I highly recommend going to this shop, thank you.
These guys are amazing! They went out of their way to help me get some tools for repairing a bike and were so friendly. Will definitely recommend to anyone shopping for bikes, bike parts and bike tools.
Had my bike tuned up here a year ago, and just attended the beginners' bike maintenance workshop, which was excellent. The session, taught by Andrew, was super engaging and useful. Highly recommended!
Have bought refurbished bikes here for one adult and two kids in our family. Great prices and service. Also purchased helmets, locks, bells etc. Super helpful staff, wonderful community vibe.
Great service. Nice people. Won't beat the price. They made my old bike brand new again doing lots of work on it for a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend checking them out !
Got the basic tuneup done on my bike and it rides like a brand new bike! Great staff, very friendly and knowledgable. Great space to take your bike, or even learn to fix your own bike.
Brought in grandson's bike for new shifter cables . Excellent work, timely turn around for repairs did a complete inspection. Very satisfied. Will definitely return and recommend.
You’re buying a bike and supporting a good cause! I bought an used bike there, Tammy was fantastic, super helpful and took the time to help me find the right bike for me.
I went to a bike co op here in hamilton. We spent 2 hours replacing my gear shifter, Tightening my bearings in my wheels and alining them, and adjusting my breaks.
Great service and price. Got the bikes picked up, two bikes fixed and then dropped back off. And it was still cheaper then buying one brand new bike let alone two.
This place is a must go visit. They fix bikes and you can learn your fix your own!! They are so patient and helpful. I would highly recommend you visit!!
Excellent service and help at New Hope Bikes. Felt right contributing to this non profit for our bike purchase. Meredith was excellent. Thanks so much.
friendly and knowledgeable staff, fair prices, 4.5 stars; just really wish they were open more than 28 hrs/wk.
Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race. - H. G. Wells
