Update: May 8, 2020. Sadly, Portage Cycle is no more. The shop is under new ownership and operates under a new name - Northern Bicycle. I decided to give the new shop a try when I needed a quick repair. Unfortunately, the new owners seemed disorganized and lacked the dedication to quick service I had come to expect at Portage Cycle. As a regular, long time customer of Portage Cycle, I was accustomed to Dave taking my bike in right away and fixing up the problem fast. Not so anymore. When I called about a broken spoke I was told to make an appointment (!) for the next week. Even with an appointment, the work took a full seven days to compete and worse yet, when I retrieved the bike, they had not done what I had asked and the workmanship was lacking. I had to take my bike home and complete the job myself. What a waste of time. Very poor communication when I called to inquire about the status of the repair after 5 days. Sadly, I'm looking for a new local bike shop with good service and fast repairs. This isn't it. Did I mention that I miss Dave and the old Portage Cycle?

Told the the fellow that i needed a tune up, he proceeded to go over the bike pointing out items that i needed, i explained to him that i was a senior on a fixed income so just the necessary ones,eg. he said i needed 2 new tires i said only the back one, ETC. We settled on a new chain a back rim and tire and a tune up, when i went to pickup the bike a week later the bill was 250.00$ new hand grips new gears, these items were not mentioned nor would i have approved them if told the price, i mean i turned down a new tire on the front, i am a senior i just needed a tune up it's not like i'm racing the bike. I was besides myself and my first thought was to just walk out leave the bike but i couldn't that's not who i am, so without a fuss other then making him aware i was not happy, i paid and left. The work was fine the bike runs well but i won't be taking it there again on principal alone.

Life savers! Me and my friends were on a bike trip crossing the province of Manitoba. We literally Road our bikes right to the shop. I needed last minute repairs for me to continue on the last leg of the journey to the Ontario boarder. The staff was friendly and informative. (and even caught some of the mistakes from the previous bike shop) They stayed late to complete the repairs on my bike the same day. I don't know of any other shop that would have had the same turnaround that they did. Great experience and highly recommended.

I needed to replace the forks on my Mountain Bike and called a few places in the city to compare prices and check for availability. My bike is an older model and in great shape so finding a replacement was a bit challenging although Rob (the owner) was able to provide a decent replacement at a competitive price. This was my first time at Northern Bicycle Co., I enjoyed the experience and the personal friendly service. I would recommend visiting this business the next time you need to purchase anything bike related.

Awesome service. They aren't just in it for your money, they clearly want you to get the most out of your bike. I took my old junker in there not really sure if I wanted to spend a bunch of money fixing up an old bike. Rob looked it over and told me exactly what it needed and nothing more. He even did a quick adjustment on it while I was paying for a new tube. No unnecessary upsells, no pushy sales pitch, just genuine help. That's service. I won't be going anywhere else for bike stuff ever again!

I'm not a pro cycler by any stretch but I was welcomed and made to feel comfortable immediately. I was still treated exceptionally well even after I changed my mind about my purchase within minutes of the transaction. I fell in love with another bike while I was waiting for them to put on the pedals and fill the tires of my original purchase. They laughed about it and didn't make me feel bad at all for changing my mind. I went there on the advice of the other reviews and I'm glad I did!

So happy to know that this place exists in Winnipeg. I had knots in my stomach wondering how I was going to get my wife’s rear tube replaced on her e-bike. A feat I had no intention of attempting. Northern Cycle performed this task effortlessly and in the time it took us to go for a bite to eat and get back. Knowledgeable, efficient, and at a reasonable price that almost seemed criminal. Bravo Northern Cycle and you will be our go to for all of our cycling needs from here on out. ❤️

We are so fortunate to have this little gem in the St. James area. Robb & staff are always pleasant & accommodating. A recent spill on my bike brought me there for a few adjustments. Had a nice chat with Robb and was able to do the adjustments while I waited. Every time I've been there, I have found the staff friendly, willing to help & answer any questions. The folks at Northern Bicycle did a great job of getting me set-up with cross country ski equipment for my middle school and high school P.E./Outdoor Ed. classes. After giving them my numbers, they were able to put together a package of skis/poles and boots to suit a variety of ages and sizes. In addition, when I have needed to get new equipment or get equipment serviced, they have been more than prompt in taking care of me. These are service minded folks, can't recommend enough!

I was shopping around near the end of winter for a new bike for the upcoming season. I went to a number of bike shops but this was the place with the best customer service. Very friendly staff and the prices were very good. Selection was much better than most other shops as they were still set up mostly for skiing. Made a purchase and got a discount from the sales staff. Very happy with the overall experience. Offered 2 years of tuneups and adjustments with the bike purchase.

Bought a e bike on line from Rad which was a mistake. Had a problem with rear tire / rim Took it to Northern pulled in front of building and they helped me unload and looked at it right away. They told me what to do and it should correct itself after adjusting They could have scammed as I had no idea what the problem was but were so honest. I appreciate that and will be back if I need them again.Plus loaded it for me Highly recommend Rob and John. Thanks again guys

My partner has a bike he hasn't used in several years and he thought it ought to be taken in for servicing. I took his bike to Northern Bicycle Co. John checked it over and said the only thing needed was air in the tires. Neither John nor Rob (?) tried to upsell me on any service or products. They seemed to genuinely care about cycling and were more than happy to share their knowledge. I had a wonderful experience.

We just took delivery of our iGo Discovery Berri and are extremely pleased with the build quality of the bike. Moreover, our bike was assembled and delivered within 24 hrs of the order and, upon delivery, Rob spent considerable time with us explaining the operation of the bike systems. We were amazed at this level of service! It could not get any better. We would highly recommend Northern Bicycle.

Highly recommended! A year after buying an Electric Fat Bike on the internet it suddenly stopped working. Checking around I was faced with the prospect of not being able to find a shop willing to touch it. Not only did the folks at Portage Cycle & Sport take a look, but also rectified the multiple issues found in one day. Excellent shop with the most knowledgeable staff with regard to E-Bikes!

Good prices. Thats it. I brought in 2 bikes for brakes repair. And they didnt fix the brakes, the original problems still remain and they wouldnt fix it but still charged me. They tried to keep my trailer hitch, I had to ask for it back. 1 bike returned with flat tire, perhaps they shouldnt tell me the bikes are ready when they need more time. I wasnt in a rush but apparently they were.

My go-to bicycle shop. Since the spring of last year, I've been going in for tune-ups, since I bought my bike second-hand. I am always greeted with excellent service, they give excellent advice, are never pushy and really listen to the customer. I went in for a tune-up, a bike lock and a helmet that's exactly what I left the store with nothing more and nothing less.

Staff are all very friendly (I have dealt with 3 of them) and seem knowledgeable. Politely asked if we needed help but not pressured while browsing. Helpful to beginner cyclists and even offered to install accessories when purchased. A relatively small store but selection for accessories is still good. Will be going there again next time for anything bike related!

The folks at Northern are top-notch and super helpful every time I pop my head in there with yet another question. Great service with a smile and will go out of their way to find a solution to any of your bike-related problems. Had them rebuild the drivetrain on my Fat Bike and they did a fantastic job. Robb and the team at Northern did a great job fixing up our old bikes. Finished on the day they said, called when finished, and the bikes were cleaned up and tuned perfectly. Solid price, great customer service, and they embody the local small business vibe that makes St. James awesome. Will check them out again whenever we decide on road bikes or ebikes.

Stopped in to have two pairs of skates sharpened. Both firgure and hockey skates are razor sharp and it was done super fast. Price was great as well. Got to talking to a staff member about a bike for my young son..(for when its time for his first bike) Super knowledgeable and friendly staff! Highly recommend!

I'm glad I stopped in at Northern Bicycle Co. I had been looking to replace my Schwalbe Marathon touring tires for months and no luck finding any. This is a nice little shop, run by a man with a great deal of experience in bike repair. I understand he's offering support and repair to electric bikes as well. I wanted my bike adapted to a short of Dutch bike. He had everything in stock. If you need to wait for your bike Santorini's is right next door.

I fond the people not at all interested in service , Knowledge of bikes seemed real poor bad staff . maybe they are good at selling thing but product knowledge is poor more interested in talking about Schrödinger's cat then selling me the part I asked for . I bought an electric bike here this summer and they were good to deal with. Towards the end of summer I brought it in for some needed adjustments, and they did the work free of charge. He also has me some helpful tips and pointers. Overall pretty pleased with the experience there so far.
