It's not worth the money. I have been a member of this gym for around 18 months and it seems to be getting worse overtime, despite the costs being raised significantly. The gym is pretty much unbearable to workout in as the air conditioning has been broken for months over spring and summer. If you ask the staff, they just say they are 'waiting for parts' or 'they are waiting for council permission' which is ridiculous considering how long its been broken for. Sometimes when using the gym, the temperature is noticeably warmer than the reception temperature which is extremely frustrating. The gym, pool and changing rooms are not well-maintained, with them being dusty, dirty and more specifically with the changing rooms, mouldy. When using the pool area, some members of staff (and most notably a blonde lady) walked through the pool with outdoor shoes with no shoe coverings, despite it strictly saying for members to adhere to this rule. In addition to this, on a few occasions the pool has smelt of sewage on one side. My partner was once relaxing in the sauna later in the evening and had the sauna shut off whilst he was still in there, even with it being 15-20 minutes before closing. The lockers are extremely fiddly and temperamental which sometimes results in having to ask a member of staff to unlock the locker manually. At one point, they were turning multiple cardio machines off with a sign saying they weren't in use to help the environment (?!) when in reality it is to save on costs. They have since stopped doing this, as I'm sure they received many complaints. The weights area of the gym is constructed poorly, with low-spec equipment from Technogym and rarely used equipment taking up space such as incline bench press, rather than something useful and popular like a Smith machine or hip-thrust machine. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, just my personal opinion. Most of the staff are friendly, however as a customer paying premium prices, I do not appreciate the lack of transparency when you ask about issues. Normally, I would think the price I pay, with all the facilities available is worth it, however due to the lack of the care for the cleanliness, usability and comfort of customers, it is not worth paying the premium price for. The two star is for the convenient location in Clifton and the smiley staff who always greet you at the door. All-in-all, I wouldn't recommend this gym.

I’ve been a member of Nuffield since June 2019, and this gym has seen a truly massive decline in quality, standards, and management. I’m beyond frustrated with the situation at this point, but locked into an expensive 12 month membership. Firstly the weights area is woefully inadequate, always oversubscribed; it’s impossible to get on equipment; there’s only 1 barbell bench, 1 easy curl bar, not enough cable machines and only 3 racks for squats and deadlifts, which are always in use. Much of the equipment is worn out; the box jumps aren’t level, so you can really turn your ankle on them. Even doing a simple circuit workout in the open area has become difficult; it’s frequently packed. Problems with the running machines - I like to push my V02 max. I need to connect my Apple Watch to the Technogym treadmills, so I can monitor my HR in real time for safety. This only works on two of the machines (the ones always in use). I’ve pointed this out 4 times to staff on the desk, and the guy I spoke to recently wasn’t even listening and the problem still isn’t fixed. I try to train on a professional level, and I can literally never complete the session I would like to. As other’s have mentioned, the air conditioning in summer was absolutely hellish, and temperatures were dangerous (peaking around 34ºC) for over two weeks. It always seems like something is broken at this gym. Few apologies and no offer of a partial refund over the summer. Poor. The showers (and often the sauna) smell of sewage from the drains, which make loud gargling sounds. it’s been a constant problem for the past year. Hygiene in and around the pool is of a poor standard generally. Behaviour in the pool area isn’t monitored, so at the weekends you have groups treating the pool like a spa, behaving inappropriately in the sauna, as well as rudely and aggressively in the changing rooms, and making a mess. This gym is £95 a month, think about that…

Edit: The gym is getting worse. It’s unbearably hot at times because they aren’t turning on the aircon. They are cutting costs in multiple areas, turning off machines and testing only allowing towels on request. It really disappointing. Sauna has been 75 degrees down from 90 the last few times I have been in. I couldn’t recommend this gym at this price with the cost cutting. Unfortunately the gym has gone downhill, it’s over subscribed and too busy even off peak times. There isn’t enough squat racks and too much cardio equipment. There’s only one bench press and they for some reason have a reverse incline bench. No smith machine and the equipment is unfortunately technogym. The gym is penny pinching too, the heating or air conditioning is rarely used and it’s common for the gym to be too hot or cold. The shower heads have been changed for ones with lower pressure. They even trialled putting towels behind the counter to try and stop people from taking more than one. The issue is someone might want to workout with a towel and have a shower or people with long hair want one just for their hair. The cardio machines will be turned off with signs on them saying they are off to save energy. The sauna temperature is 75 degrees when it was 93-95 before and you can feel the difference. The same for the hot water temperature. It’s not a premium gym anymore and unfortunately too busy and trying to save money and the experience has suffered. Unfortunately there aren’t really any alternatives nearby unless you go to David Lloyd.

Nuffield has been a second home to me in Bristol for two years and I love how cosy and most importantly how friendly and knowledgeable the team are. I decided to join Nuffield thanks to an injury that has been hindering my sports and half marathons. For a budget conscious person like me it was hard to justify the price of it at first but this has got to be my biggest ROI. The classes are highly varied, and it's all about having the correct form and minimising injury rather than how hard can you lift or how fast can you cycle etc. The equipment, studios and floor are very clean and well maintained which is what I love. The pool, sauna and steam room are also a big plus for the membership price they offer. The outsiders that they hire for yoga and Pilates are the cream of the crop in the city with decades of experience. The MOT and personal experience they provide (aka by assigning a personal trainer to each member) really motivates me towards my injury-free wellness goals. I moved to Houston recently and I have to admit that even being in a major progressive city in the US, there is no other health and fitness club that feels as personal yet holistic as Nuffield. For a top tier gym that is about 20-30% more expensive than Nuffield still does not beat what Nuffield has to offer which is very very irritating. I miss the club a lot and hope to come by sometime soon and stop by for a drop-in!!

I've gone for 3 months and I feel I've gone long enough to leave a review. The gym itself is quite small, there is no smith machine or calf press, which I find to be quite essential for my workouts so I wouldn't call the gym "fully equipped". The gym gets very busy from 4-7 and personally I wouldn't bother going at that time. they've got 3 squat racks which is good. the free towels are really good but occasionally they have shortages, I'd say once a month in my experience they run out. the classes are good. I've only been to a few but I think they definitely help to motivate you. they have a lot on offer throughout the day. the pool temperature varies and its seemingly random whether it will be a bit cold or a bit hot, but its always fine to swim in. I don't think the pool is full length. in terms of value for money, personally for me it's worth it, I use the NHS discount which saves 30% and I go to the gym frequently enough to justify the roughly £60 per month I pay. If you swim after every session, use the sauna + steam room, and have long hot showers I reckon you probably cost them more than £60 a month. That being said I know that not everyone can get the discount, and I don't know if I'd recommend for £90 a month or whatever it is. The decor and vibe of the place does seem a bit outdated. It doesn't have a premium gym feeling in my opinion.

  • Mauricio Almeida Couri Ribeiro

I've been a member for roughly three months now. The gym itself is not as good as it looks in the pictures. The gym's main workout room is usually cold in winter, since the heating does not work well and its insulation is far from ideal. The gym equipment is ok but far from being top quality. The classes are usually bad: things are not done properly and instructors do not really care if students are doing the exercises in the right way (with very few exceptions). Moreover, booking classes, especially the few classes that are worth it, is difficult: you usually need to get on a waiting list. Bathrooms, especially showers, are not well maintained. Watch out for the monthly membership: they require more than one month notice to cancel classes, but they won't tell you that when you subscribe: you will only be told that you should cancel in advance. I've only learned that when I decided to cancel: I gave notice on February 4th and they told me that I would have to pay for March as well. Also, they make it sound like freezing a monthly membership is easy, but it is not: they only allow you to freeze in very specific conditions, which are specified in a Terms and Conditions document that they do not present to you when signing the contract. Overall, I would not recommend it, especially given the price. There are much better deals in Bristol.

  • Peter Colman

Customer service not that great I am currently a member of nuffield in yeovil but didn't get told that if you go to another nuffield you have to pay as apparently they have split certain gyms into tiers and not just you can go to any gym you want seeing as your paying a lot membership which is appalling to be honest. Came in with 3 of my friends who in fairness forgot to book a free taster session as we didn't think we had to as we all have been to a gym and wanted to see if this was any good. Got told we couldn't get in because of this which is fair but I feel the lady with blonde hair and glasses wasn't very friendly or helpfull she didn't seem to go out of her way at all and was very blunt Considering I'm already paying alot for a gym and the Bristol one is even more you would think the staff are a little bit more friendly or even human. Best bet is if you don't need a swmmingpool go to a 24/7 gym or one that closes on the dot at 10 don't come here as it's just a name nothing else.

  • Tyler Peck

For some reason my previous review was deleted. Unfortunately the gym has gone downhill, it’s over subscribed and too busy even off peak times. The only reason i wouldn’t rate it 5 stars is the price... but the place is fantastic. The gym itself has just recently been redone - including some pretty fancy new toys tech wise. Smart treadmills with large displays and a range of other cool kit. The gym itself is spacious but the views out are a little lacking. Locker rooms are great with digital locks built in. Free towels are also provided. Also includes shower facilities. The physiotherapy here is great too - with experienced staff and it’s easy to get a quick appointment. High recommend Andy as a physio. The cost of the gym is high... but you get what you pay for. Unlike most gyms - it has helpful staff on hand and is generally a classier venue than your average 24 hour city gym. Swimming pool of course justifies the cost if you make use of it. There are also sauna facilities. Overall - top gym if it falls in your price range.

  • Venera Bekteshi

This place is very unprofessional. I would like my money back and cancel my membership starting today. This place closes at at 10 pm, but they finish letting in people at 915 pm. Then they close the machines at 945 and let you take a shower dry hair and everything for less than 10 mins?? Are you serious??? I was out at 1002 pm so 2 minute late and this man has a decency to tell me this happened 1 times before therefore they will cancel my membership- what kind of an awful costumer service is this. I have used gyms ALL OVER USA and Europe I have never ever encountered anything so insensitive and so careless- if u can’t wait 5 minutes after close time than shut machines at 930 and don’t advertise you are shutting down at 10 as this is so widely misleading- as I rushed through the door to get out I twisted my ankle- really disappointed I want my membership cancelled immediately

  • Jay Ellis

Gym standards have slipped recently. Way too many new users which has resulted in peak times being a complete no go unless you want to wait 20 mins for a bench, staff are clearly aware of this so they've posted pictures of when the gym is less busy upon entry. If I can't go at lunch I'm having to wait until post 7:30. The price however has continued to climb to the point where it's not reflective of the service, the equipment is standard and the pool area not much improved since what looks like the 90s. Getting a locker is a roll of the dice and most are on their last legs. Compared to other Nuffields this is grossly overpriced. The staff are friendly and helpful and the classes ok when you can get a spot. I'd recommend trying a David Lloyd or bannatynes down In Redland, zero point in getting a peak membership here.

  • David De-U

This is a nice gym for the price. It has most of the facilities to get you healthy. May be missing a few if you're into body building. I feel the swimming pool and sauna area could do with a little update to make it feel more premium. A drinking tap in that area would also be good. It's focused around families and you can bring your little ones to the gym for around £17 a month. Swimming is included in the membership for kids. They have a crèche area for kids re-opening in December so you can do classes and let your kids play in a safe space while you train. All in all a good gym. Just needs a little refit on parts to put it in line with the premium brand.

  • Nick Veasey

Whilst Nuffield is the priciest gym in Bristol, it's also one of the nicest. It's the only gym in Bristol to boast a swimming pool and onsite physio and nutritional therapy. The gym itself is comparatively small compared to somewhere like Pure Gym and can get pretty busy during peak hours. The changing rooms are clean and well maintained, offering towel service and shower facilities. The gym also has a nice swimming pool ( I think it may be the only gym in Bristol to have one) and Sauna which comes at no extra cost to membership. I have also used both the physiotherapy and nutritional advice services and can rate them both very highly.

  • Clarke Evans

I would happily give this place no stars if it let me. Place is poorly built, badly positioned and staff look lost when you walk in. No comparison to the Nuffield health I go to when I’m back at home. Absolutely dreadful experience. Girl on the desk looked like she didn’t know what she was doing. The place was empty which to be honest was no surprise given the lack of customer care and professional ability. Avoid this place if you’re thinking of joining. It’s a really poor excuse for Nuffield and gives it a bad name. Zero stars and please get some staff that are competent

  • Elysia Traynor

Fantastic gym! It has good quality Technogym and Origin equipment and, although fairly small, the gym is never too busy to use what you want, even at peak times. The staff are very friendly and approachable. I have been to a number of classes, and the standard of instructor is high (especially given that the head of Les Mills UK teaches there!) Very happy with the swimming pool and sauna as well. The place generally has a nice atmosphere and makes me feel at home. Definitely worth the money if you make use of all that this gym has to offer!

  • Whitney Russell

I went to Nuffield gym in Clifton Bristol for a training course through lifetime. The service of the staff wasn't very professional. The staff continued to complain about us being in gym members way and didn't make us feel very welcome at all. The cycling studio wasn't hygienic the floor was covered in sweat creating a health hazard. They refused to sell us hot water and do not cater for specific dietary requirements, I do not believe this gym is worth £77 per month.

  • Yvette

It’s been pretty quiet over summer, mostly because the air conditioning has been broken in every room for at least a couple months, making this place absolutely unbearable to workout in. No reductions in membership either despite the fact it’s so insufferable trying to get any workout in in this heat. It’s taking so long to fix because they need planning permission from the council to get it done - ridiculous considering membership is £100 a month

  • adrian allen

The gym equipment is great, the sauna is decent, but found the staff that were there on the day not very helpful and somewhat rude, the tour consisted of that's the gym and the changing room is over there. Hygiene in the pool was poor and nobody appeared to shower between the sauna/steam room and pool. For the money and being one of the ost expensive gyms in Bristol I would expect a lot more.

  • Kay Q

Unfortunately one of the worst gyms I've ever used. Very overpriced for an extremely limited weight section. The pool is small and not maintained well. The weight lifting area is not equipped for heavy lifting which is extremely annoying. I was told not to deadlift moderate weights as we were on the 2nd floor and the floor couldn't handle it. Limited lockers. 2 stars for location only.

  • Luke McFadden

It's a pricey gym but the classes are excellent and it doesn't get too crowded. If you have an Aviva product, you may be eligible for £15 off the membership. If not they have a lot of corporate offers. Free towel to use each visit, a pool, steam room and sauna. Friendly staff and a free health MOT every few months. These are how I justify the cost to myself.

  • Buzz Killington

The pool, classes and location are the best things about this place. If you won't get value from these, I'd go elsewhere, particularly given the nearly £100/month this place charges. The building itself is a bit cramped for space, especially when busy. The changing facilities are can feel old and dirty, think broken lockers, smell of mould in the showers, etc.

  • Markos Mourmanov

Gym is good, well looked after. Studios are great, spin room is always available and staff is super knowledgeable. The changing rooms and spa area require some renovations and modernizations. But all in all, you get your money’s worth. The only downside is no option to bring a guest (say X times per months/year), which would’ve been great.

  • martin shervington

A really good gym in the heart of Clifton. I was a member here for 5 years and regularly attended many classes - worth doing if you need a push! A little more expensive than some alternatives and parking is limited to the street. Apart from those points, you'd meet some great people here so could be a social aspect to membership as well.

  • smokeyjoefifa

Definitely one of if not the cleanest facility in Bristol but I'll give 4 stars because the heating is awful was training on the boxing bag and had heating blasting all over me didn't last 2 mins lol think it might be to keep the elderly warm but doesn't need to be that hot in the training area for real.

  • Danielle Jones

Nuffield have been amazing. I rolled my ankle during a fitness class (my fault entirely) and they have been nothing short of amazing. Ive received courtesy calls to check im ok and a free physio appointment with Hannah who was lovely. Cant rate them highly enough. gym and pool is also fabulous!

  • Molly Fitches

Convenient location and a good range of facilities. Downside - gym floor could definitely be cleaned more frequently, sometimes over subscribed and impossible to get a barbell or cable machine, overpriced compared to other nearby gyms. Don't think there's any free parking either.

  • Angela Morris

I would heartily recommend this gym. The training staff are excellent and there is a very good range of high quality equipment. The pool is not large but is perfect for post operative recovery. The changing rooms are spacious and airy with large lockers and private showers.

  • Uk Uk

A small gym. Most of the services in it do not benefit from. They want you to register for three months and commit to a contract with them. When canceling, they make it difficult. I do not recommend it. Also, its price is very high for the size of the gym.

  • Kristin

Facilities are great in principle - not enough toilets in the female changing rooms leading overprivileged members reporting others for occupying communal changing areas. I'll be staying with my usual gym, despite the commendable response from the staff.

  • Marinella Greco

The pool is good,, sauna and steam, BUT the organisation is bad, so much waste of time with reception , wrong information of classes, my Log in, and more, cold yoga room in January, I am shocked to see that, after I paid £ 100 yesterday for one month

  • Daniel Williams

The spin bikes are old when compared to other Nuffields around the same price bracket, could do with some investment in that area of the gym. However, the other equipment is pretty new and the instructors are great if group exercise is your thing.

  • Ausiah

Decent but small facilities - good value for money, you get what you pay for. Push button showers last about 10 seconds, not the cleanest, only 4 in steam room and sauna at one time, sometimes pool cut off for swim lessons

  • Peter Watts

Initially I wasn't impressed as the gym floor seemed a bit cramped but after trialling some classes I realized that this gyms strengths are in it's PT team who deliver excellent classes. Large changing rooms as well.

  • Rowena

Staff very helpful and friendly. Free towels to use. Spacious and clean changing rooms. Pool is a bit small and crowded at some times but sauna and steam room are lovely. For the price, could do with a hot tub.

  • Lewis Munshi

I love my gym. This Nuffield changed my outlook and view of gyms in general. Facilities are managed and cleaned very well. The money you pay is worth the service from all staff! PT chris got it on lock!

  • Tara Bridges

Gym, good. Reason for the 1 star is the manager. If you have any issue with payments or anything he's literally the most obnoxious cocky person to deal with. Don't recommend due to that unfortunately.

  • Ben Hatchelt

First gym I ever used back when it was Canons. It's been updated a number of times since, and while a few machines are missing it does the trick. The steam and sauna (when working) are a god send.

  • Hin Wong

Love Nuffield. Smiling and helpful staff. The swimming pool is great. Everything about it is wonderful. Even the size because a huge gym just means a messier gym. Here it's always clean and tidy.

  • Jasper VDS

Overall a good gym with a range of weights and equipment to use. In need of general maintenance. Feels tired and old with air conditioning not always working, locker rooms looking tired, etc..

  • Sophie Cooper

Not cheap but the best for Les Mills virtual cycling experiences. Go with a friend to make sure to make the most of your membership. Purchase through Hussle for day passes.

  • Rory Milne

Great gym, friendly staff and well equipped. Reasonable pool with no children, obviously quite busy pre and post 9-5 working hours in the week, but great facilities.

  • Rachel Scott

Terrible customer service, outdated bathrooms that smell of sewage, and constantly running out of towels, aircon and heating issues. This is not a premium gym.

  • CandL Erskine

Unfortunately, we received a parking fine in the post after visiting your venue for a conference - This means that we now change your star rating from 5 to 1

  • Ben Halstead

I have been a member here on and off since 2012. When I first joined, it felt high-end and luxurious, but there have been no significant renovations since.

  • Ella Georgia Walmsley

Great facilities, big gym, good range of equipment, big studios, clean, friendly staff, sauna is small but does the job. Can't wait to return!

  • Dilan Halai

Very good and pleasant gym. Staff are very friendly and it’s not very busy. Clean and kept well maintained, latest machines are installed.

  • Namrata Booker

Great gym, motivational classes, lovely friendly staff, clean changing area. On the whole very well maintained and well worth the money.

  • Darrell Jones

I went for a health check (arranged by work). The staff were friendly, thorough and explained things at every step. Recommended to all

  • Mary Pridgeon

Very inciteful Health Assessment, specialists welcoming and very knowledgeable, listening carefully to what I was saying. Thankhou

  • Fraser

The swimming pool and sauna facilities are great, and the gym floor is functional and clean but somewhat on the small side.

  • Rich Apperley

Over price was 1000 pounds more than going to Harley st where ive just been operated on in a week and longer waiting lists

  • Kate Strong

What's not to like nice spacious changing rooms.Lots of gym equipment and mainly for me getting a swim and a steam.Heaven.

  • Jas P

Staff are friendly and efficient. I have had my annual checkup here and it was a reasonably good all-round experience.

  • Robert Blenkinsopp

Well equipped, clean and spacious with a good atmosphere, has not been overly crowded when I've been there.

  • Mohammed Mohsin Talukder

Very good facilities though expensive. on top of that parking charge is at a rate of £2.50 for 2 hours.

  • Natalie Diaper

Great equipment and facilities. Always clean. Friendly staff. Pricey, but those things make up for it.

  • Sarah-Jane Walsh

Amazing facilities but very pricey, you do get a towel though so saves on your laundry …
