Dr Frohnmayer and Dr Turk have both treated me numerous times. They have always done a wonderful job, treated me kindly, and were patient with any concerns or questions I had. I don't understand how things went so wrong with another reviewer's experiences with Dr Turk, because not only have I had good experiences, but I sent my dad who lives out of the country (in Singapore, so there's excellent medical care) to Dr Turk and my dad said he's going to schedule all his dental work with Dr Turk when he's visiting. I sent a neighbor to Dr Turk as well, and my neighbor thought Dr Turk was great. I've had my molars and most of my premolars crack (literally) from my tmj and grinding problems so I have had an absurd amount of dental work done in my relatively short life. I have never had another dentist fit a crown or filling as well as these doctors, and I've had five other dentists fit crowns. Dr Frohnmayer has adjusted my bite a bunch of times, thanks to dental work, which will often need little adjustments afterward, and my pickiness. Other dentists, including two in St Johns, were impatient and uncaring when I needed any unpaid follow-up care, even when their prices are twice what Portsmouth Dental's are *cough Dr Kaady *cough cough. I got the shaft when it came to tooth genes and jaw issues, but these doctors have made the situation a lot more bearable. The front desk staff and dental assistants have always been nice and helpful as well. The one time I had to call on the weekend, it was July 4th and Dr Turk called me back to help me, even though he was out of town with his family, and gave me a five dollar solution to get me comfortably through the rest of the weekend. Everyone has their own experiences, but mine have been consistently excellent with the doctors and staff of Portsmouth dental.

TL;DR Dr. Hawthorne gave me a botched filling and refused to fix it on either of my two follow-up visits. I went to Portsmouth Dental Care this spring to get checked out because it had been way too long since my last cleaning and they were near my apartment. They took an x-ray and booked me to get a million cavities filled over two appointments in May 2022. About a month after my second appointment one of my fillings was still hurting so I went in to have Dr. Hawthorne look at it and he grinded it down some more and told me to come back if it was still hurting in a week. It was absolutely still hurting a week later so I went back and went in at the time that the clinic asked me to. I had to wait an entire hour past my appointment time just to be seen and by the time Dr. Hawthorne made it to me he clearly wasn't paying attention to a word I said (example: I told him my filling hurt most when I ate crunchier foods and he repeated back "so your tooth's feeling crunchy?"). He did the exact same thing he did to "fix" my filling in the previous appointment, which was to grind the filling down some more. I asked him how doing the exact same thing that didn't work last time was going to fix it this time and he just brushed me off. December 2022 and my tooth still hurts if I eat or drink something too cold but I can't see a new dentist until next year since they used up my entire dental insurance for the year (but they still somehow billed me $1,400 out of pocket). Anyway I'm poor and my mouth hurts, stay away.

Dentist is just fine, but had an issue with a rather rude staff member when trying to resolve an erroneous bill. I've been seeing this dentist with the same insurance for over two years. Had some cavities filled earlier this year. I was given a total price at the front desk (I am always explicit - confirming the FINAL amount owed), paid in full, and went on with my life. Nearly five months later, I received a bill from this office. I called immediately to correct the situation and was told, "yeah, sorry, we updated our billing system and a bunch of people have received bills in error. Let me take your name and number and get back to you." No one ever called. A month went by, and nothing...except another bill, now with a finance charge tacked on. I called again to try to resolve the billing error and spoke to a woman who claimed they only quote services and if I didn't pay they'd send me to collections. She also claimed that they "did me a favor" by billing my insurance for me (untrue). Very rude, argumentative, and hostile. I'm disappointed, as Dr. Turk is great! It's a shame that he allows his staff to treat loyal customers this way (especially over their error!).

I cannot say enough positive things about Portsmouth Dental Care and specifically Dr. Turk. I have a military background, which means I have a lot of bad dental work that has been haunting me since I left service. In the few years I have lived in this area and have been seeing Dr. Turk, I have had multiple crowns, root canals, re-seated crowns, chipped teeth, and more.They have always tried to get me in at the earliest possible time, done everything possible to make sure I was comfortable and worked with me to find the best solution to help me keep my teeth functioning and attractive, even when money has been tight. The kindness, concern, and consideration is above and beyond all other providers I have ever seen. If you need a good dentist, I encourage you to seek out Dr. Turk. I know a review that is nothing but good things seems suspicious, but I really can't say anything bad...maybe the room is small? But that is about it. The staff and care received are stellar. The prices are better than any you will find from a reputable dentist, and they work with most insurance providers.

Below is my previous experience… Since then we have had nothing but a negative experience including no returned phone calls. Problem with last visit I was told they did the wrong procedure. My wife had an infected tooth and they took over a month to get her in because of her medication. When I called another dentist they said her medicine should not have affected treatment. Our family has spent so much money here including 3 kids with braces I have no idea why we can’t even get a return call from them. The staff is great. Dentist is super friendly. They did make some small mistakes on my fillings. I suspect they are training new people but the dentist fixed the problems and took money off my bill for the inconvenience. Pretty sure he gave me a holiday discount on my last bill too as it was less than quoted. I’ve had a cleaning, a crown and a few fittings done. The hygienist was super awesome bye fastest cleaning ever. I’m terrible with remembering names at the dr as I have high health settings anxiety. This place is really relaxed and comfortable.

Dr. Turk is horrible. Never looked at my x-rays before my request to have my wisdom teeth pulled. All my teeth shifted, causing the most painful TMJ and hearing loss in my right ear. The experience has been very traumatic for myself as well as my family. He ridiculed me when I came in with pain he caused. He adjusted a mouth guard countless times causing my symptoms to flare up. He never took the time to do it right or refer me else where. The office never answered my wkend calls, nor upon my next pain visit did he care to look at previous notes of my visit. Also Dr. Turk did a painful filling that caused my whole mouth to swell. ( the pics are outragous!) After the filling was fixed, my swelling went down, but then caused my bite to shift horribly. The worst pain and headaches ever imaginable, not to mention the partial hearing loss that has forever changed my life. Unprofessional and in a hurry! He talks very unprofessional w his staff! Makes one feel awkward. Never go here.

I have been to many dentist offices in the last few years which I have not been happy with. I was able to finally get my braces, I decided to just try out portsmouth dental because they do evening and saturdays. I went in for my consult and found out I had a ton of cavities..they helped work with me to get these done quickly so I was able to get my braces on. Going to the dentist for me is the worst but Portsmouth made it seem more pleasant than most other offices. I am very happy with my care from them, very friendly staff and doctors. They were always able to get me in quick when there was an emergency or when I was in pain. Not to mention they do not only do regular dental care, but also teeth whitening, braces, wisdom teeth removals. Its nice to have a dentist office that I can trust now. I would highly reccomend them to anyone looking for a new dentist!

The biggest regret I have made since moving out here is coming here for a simple cleaning, routine oral exam, and xrays. They not only billed me $55.20 for what they called a "co-pay" but they have also billed my insurance $154.00. But the real kicker is months later, they are now sending me an email statement for $46.80 that simply says "balance forward" and has my name and address but no details on what the amount consists of or anything resembling what a professional dental establishment does. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS! Update: I have called them to resolve this and they have agreed to dismiss this amount of $46.80 but I have not received any supporting document or final invoice showing/reflecting a $0 balance so I will hold off until if/when that happens.

I used to be a client there as a child but I think maybe it's under new ownership. I called them looking for a 50 cent oral surgery for my newborn baby who is having trouble breastfeeding. I couldn't find them anywhere in stores and they would take 2-3 days to arrive from amazon and I didn't want to have to wait that long. I called them and they said they had some available but wouldn't agree to sell one for 20x it's value due to "shortages". Luckily I called another dentist office and they refused to take my money and said they were just happy to help. I wouldn't spend a dollar at a business that would turn away a desperate parent trying to help their hungry baby over a 50 cent item.

I love licorice taffy. At 6:30 last evening I felt something besides taffy in the taffy. It was my lower left-molar crown. I remembered Portsmouth Dental is open late. I called and they got me in at 8:00 a.m. today! I took the old crown with me. They cleaned it and were able to re-seat it, improving the feel of it in the process (and saving me 100s of $$ over the cost of a new crown). I saw Drs. Hawthorne and Turk and was treated with warmth and consideration. I wish I had noted all the assistants' names, because they were all super-helpful. Portsmouth Dental earns my highest recommendation. I'm grateful they've taken such good care of my teeth for 10 years now.

I came in for a broken tooth back in April of 2022, after being seen at two other offices and I was so blown away by the service I received. Not only was the doctor very informative in letting me know that unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to get away with just filling, due to how broken my tooth was, but the front desk was also super helpful in explaining what the cost would be and why. I’m a college student, so financially it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. I was quoted over 3000.00 at another office for my crown, wasn’t Nearly as much here. Thank you to the Portsmouth Dental Care team for taking care of me!!!!!

This has been the best dental experience I’ve likely ever had over 35 years of life in two countries and 4 states. They are incredibly friendly and so thorough. Never in a new patient exam have I had a hygienist measure my gums. Love that! They were able to help me with documentation I requested for my FSA as well as getting some billing done ahead of time. They were able to schedule several appointments for me to take advantage of my waning insurance benefits in a short period of time. One of three appointments down so far! I will absolutely recommend them to my friends and family.

Very nice people. I went once and made them my primary dentist immediately. And even though the appointment went super quickly, I never felt rushed out. Before coming to this place, I had zero idea the dentist didn't have to be one of the most painful experiences of your life. Like, I truly just thought going to the dentist just hurts. But no, that's a lie. It doesn't need to be that way. I had to get a couple cavities filled and I barely even felt the needle when they numbed me up. This is, by far, THE best experience I have ever had going to the dentist. Ever.

We love Portsmouth Dental! They are great with us and our kids and have made us comfortable with all appointments and procedures (which have been numerous over the past 10+ years). I have sent friends to them who also had very good experiences. No one should love going to the dentist and there will always be some issues when major work is done but these guys are aces and their whole staff are very accommodating. Don't believe anyone who tells you different, they must just be an anti-dentite.

Awesome dentists!!! I been looking for a good dentist for two years! I’m usually very scared and nervous so I need someone really good! This place made me feel like nothing is a problem and anything can be fix with lots of knowledge and also very gentle but funny! This is absolutely the best dentist! Dr. Turk and his team take care of their patients and truly care about their well being. The assistants are caring and knowledgeable as well. I have been a patient here for several years and my care has never been anything less than stellar. They always find a way to get my seen when needed even if they are super busy. The prices are reasonable and the front desk staff is very kind. If you need a dentist don’t look any further.

Went in to get a tooth fixed and having had negative dental experiences in the past I’m always a little apprehensive going to the dentist. Man these guys know how to make all those worries go away. They’re incredibly personable, kind, and efficient in what they do. I highly recommend this place. The doctors and reception staff are fantastic, really professional service however I had a tooth extracted and the doctor said I could keep it however the tech that was assisting walked me out and said that it was a bio hazard and I couldn’t take it with me. I don’t understand it was in my mouth why can’t I keep it? I a have sentimental attachment to my teeth and I feel like that tooth was somehow stolen from me so 4 stars.

We've had such a great experience here over the last 4 years. My husband and I both had our teeth taken care of by the Portsmouth team. Not only did they always do a great job but everyone is so nice and helpful. We are sad to leave but we just aren't traveling into Portland anymore for work and we live 45 minutes away. I’ve now visited three times—twice for cleaning and once for crowns. Everyone here is so friendly and welcoming. They make everything easy to understand and are great about explaining insurance coverage vs. out of pocket. Scheduling is easy and I never feel like I’m “in trouble” at the dentist (you totally know what I mean). They give helpful feedback without it feeling like a lecture. I’m glad I found them!

I went to 7 dentists in Portland before I discovered Portsmouth Dental in my little neighborhood. Dr Turk and his superbly trained staff are courteous and efficient...and I am a challenging patient. Not to be overlooked is the front office staff, who set the upbeat tone for the office. Dr. Turk even discovered an underlying condition that had evaded other medical doctors. He helps me love my teeth!!!

I'm a big baby when it comes to needles. (No seriously, I both my children naturally to avoid the epidural needle.) Michelle was so understanding and made sure I had what I needed to feel less ashamed of my fears. The practice as a whole is very professional, makes things convenient both interms of setting appointments and making payments. Highly recommend.

Everything is just that great the nurse and coordinator are the best I’ve ever met. I refuse needle, but the coordinator made me so relax that I felt like treated with a spa..Not to mention Dr. Turk, super professional, he finished with four of my wisdom teeth within 50mins or 40mins. I found the staff to be friendly and professional. I was impressed with the state of the art equipment, but mostly they are very kind. Their fees are reasonable and I would recommend this facility to anyone. Thank you Portsmouth Dental Care, I shall return.

Miserable experience that has nothing to do with the expected dentist experience. Left to sit for 3 hours with visits every 15 minutes from 5 different people all asking the same questions but doing almost nothing except 5 minutes x-ray, and anesthesia.

I realized I had a bad cavity that was becoming sensitive, so I came in and got X-rays, a CT scan and an exam. They said they would need to extract the tooth and I scheduled surgery as soon as I could to prevent it from getting any worse.
