Okay so here is as much tea as I can spill out of a 5 gallon jug. My husband has been to 3 LTACH facilities and out of them all this one was the best overall. Let's break it down. Location - please bear in mind I am not a native so what would define this as a bad neighborhood I am not sure. Here is what I CAN tell you. The buildings around here are old and may be in need of a little TLC. However, as someone who has no car and had to walk 20 minutes up the street to get to the closest grocery store I never really felt unsafe. The location is right off the highway by the kedzie Homan station and still considered part of the medical district. If you are native I am fairly certain this may give you at least some peace of mind for you and your loved ones. Walking up the street, police presence is known, the neighborhood is quiet, the streets are easy to cross, and there are a few churches in the area if that's your thing The police precinct is also what I would guess is about a five minute drive up the street. May appear rough but pretty safe. Also, again coming from 3 of these I would like to stress that the best looking neighborhood does not always supply the best care. The building itself looks pretty old but they are constantly upgrading what they can. From fresh paint to new electrical needs, they stay on top of their maintenance issues. A pro (depending on opinion) to this location - if your loved one for any reason had to be rushed back to the hospital, they would go to Rush. Care - We were not expecting much in this field if I am being honest as past experiences had told us that care in these facilities was subpar at best. We were, however, very pleasantly surprised. PCTs do actually come in every 2 hours, check, and turn their patients that need assistance with these things. With respiratory...I was told they have two per floor per shift and except for a few times I've believed this two be true. There was the occasional happening where I've heard a respiratory therapist was divided between two floors but I cannot say that it happens frequentpy, just that it happens. However, despite this, when you call someone is generally there in a few minutes. That goes for PCTs, RCPs, and RNs alike. The nursing staff is very hands on and kind. They don't mind suctioning trachs of cleaning up patients and they are steadfast to their jobs. The attitudes are all pleasant and they really try their best to answer the questions you have. Your doctorial staff is a mixed breed. All of them are pleasant but not all of them are going to offer to answer questions you have. My advice - have your questions on ready. Let them know when they enter that you have questions.its not always that they are unwilling. Sometimes it is the case load itself. They do not all come at the same time so if you are having trouble catching a doctor be sure to schedule a meeting with your care coordinator. Financial Assistance - So this was the first place I went to that did this and they will ask you about it but may not go in depth so here is your heads up. If you are from out of town, or just are just die hard about your loved one like me and stay the night and whole visit, ask about financial assistance. This does not apply to everyone. Some people get it some people don't but it is an option. Some things they help you with include: meal tickets (one meal each weekday), transportation (I did not use this so I do not know much but you can get taxi service up to 3 designated times a week), and hotel assistance (again I did not utilize this option so I do not know much. I believe this provide a portion of funding to the hotel of your choice one to two nights a week). The after plan - start thinking about where you want your loved one to go next and let your care coordinator know as soon as possible. They can also supply you with options to what you may be looking into. If you are planning to take your loved one home please know they will require at least 2-3 people to do the discharge education. And ask questions!! You will not have this resource at home.

My mom was admitted here from October 22, 2021 until Feb 18, 2022 due to multiple stage 4 pressure ulcers she acquired at locked medical facilities during the "COVID19 pandemic". I offer this long (overdue) feedback to those considering this facility. Pros: Her largest ulcer healed by more than 1000 cubic centimeters at RML. The wound care team is professional, regularly met with me in person, and emailed me 100s of photos. This line of communication allowed me to get some sleep at night. RML nursing staff also did an excellent job training me. I went from being afraid to even touch my mom's ulcers to being able to dress them daily and continue healing her at home (& knock on wood that will continue). Most staff seems to genuinely care. There are talented nurses from around the world working here. I met people from Bangladesh, India, Iran (particularly special given our family background), Mexico, The Philippines, etc. They taught me a lot. I was happy with how communicative the care coordinator was. It's a rare trait to find in the American healthcare industry. Despite all the insurance-related challenges, I believe she invested much of her time in securing resources for my mom and me. RML is clean. The grounds are well maintained & there are ample supplies for wounded people. My mom was on an expensive alternating air mattress. The people who greet you at the front are polite. This may seem like a small detail but small details add up. If I compare our experience at this hospital to others (for example Mt. Sinai, which can't manage to offer a functional clock & TV), the quality is night & day. Cons: There were 2 back-to-back instances when I found my mom lying flat in her bed with her feeding tube running. I reported the aspiration risk. Whether that explains why she needed CPR later the same weekend, I'll never know. [I'm just glad she survived & God Bless Nurse Alondra]. RML follows CDC guidelines. A large amount of its funding comes from the CDC. Unfortunately, that means if the CDC arbitrarily decides hospital patients shouldn't have basic human rights (e.g. visitors), RML complies. It was emotionally distressing to be abruptly separated from my mom last Christmas, given the injuries she had already endured at other locked medical facilities during the "pandemic". Thank God RML staff didn't use COVID as an excuse, but rather continued to uphold its high-quality standards and healing her during my forced absence. I wish a hospital as otherwise amazing as RML would do more to resist illogical CDC mandates, and higher-ups would push back, although I understand some people may disagree and/or feel they can't afford to lose their jobs. After months of planning for a home discharge with the care coordinator, I was initially upset we had to go to court when insurance funding ran out and RML decided a nursing home discharge would be safer (i.e. faster). It wasn't though. ----- The time in court turned out to be a great blessing in disguise as it dragged on for weeks, my mom continued staying at RML and healed significantly more. Thank God, in the end, RML dropped the case, and we are finally living together for the  1st time in 27 years! We are eternally grateful for the additional weeks of healing that occurred because of RML and at RML’s expense. ----- In conclusion, RML is by far the best hospital in Chicago my mom has ever been admitted to. RML is far from perfect though & my 5 stars are not intended to reflect that it is. I encourage the staff to continue striving for improvement. Better yet, challenge the status quo by leading the way in making the revolutionary societal changes so desperately needed for all of us in American Healthcare right now. If your loved one gets admitted here, visit as much as possible and be glad you have that ability because you never know when the CDC or some other all-too-powerful governmental organization will take that human right (privilege?) away again. I hope this detailed review helps someone out there. I’m Amelia Simkins. Feel free to find me/ reach out.

For the most part, RML took great care of my family member. The nursing and rehab staff are fantastic. Most of the staff I dealt with were flawlessly professional, friendly, and helpful. The nursing, rehab, and housekeeping staff were absolutely wonderful. Administration and billing, not so much. They didn't return phone calls in a timely manner (or at all) and didn't seem to understand much about how to do their jobs. How can billers know so little about how medicare and medicaid work? The most important thing is that my family member made great strides in recovering from a devastating health crisis while at RML. I could tell that the nursing and rehab staff were doing a great job by how much my family member improved while they were there. When they first got to RML they couldn't move their right side and could barely speak, but by the time they left they were speaking much more clearly, able to remember many more words, and able to move and lift their right arm and leg. The rehab staff even had them up and walking a few steps. May not sound like much, but it was a huge thing for us! RML could definitely do better when it comes to the food. I totally understand that there is only so much you can do with a pureed diet, but one little scoop of meat/fish and one little scoop of mashed potatoes for lunch and dinner day in and day out for weeks is really not okay. Vegetables are a thing, check them out. Several times I noticed on the "receipt" that came with the meal that vegetables were supposed to be on the plate but they were not there. What's up with that? My family member missed what I understand was an important post-op appointment while at RML, and it seemed as though the appointment was missed due to some sort of miscommunication. This was disappointing, especially as no one planned to visit them that day assuming they would be gone most of the day. We kept calling to see if they had returned from their appointment so maybe we could drop by and see them, but were not given the correct info so they did not get any visits from family that day. (A very big deal to all of us!) In fact, we did not find out until the next day that they had missed their appointment. The sad and extremely frustrating part of this (and part of why I gave only 2 stars) is that the rehab facility RML transferred my family member to is AWFUL. They have lost much of the function they gained while at RML. They have fallen and wound up back in the hospital. RML also transferred my family member before they were really ready to be transferred because they were afraid they wouldn't get paid (they would, and they would know that if their billers knew anything at all about medicare.) So maybe don't transfer your patients to 3rd rate nursing homes or before they are ready for a lower level of care, but instead LISTEN TO THE FAMILY and ADVOCATE FOR YOUR PATIENTS (you can do that, trust me) and get them in some place where they are going to continue to recover and thrive instead of just dumping them in the first place willing to take them. So, while the actual hands-on nursing, rehab, and even housekeeping staff are on point and absolutely FANTASTIC at what they do, the kitchen and administrative folks need A LOT of work.

My father was at the RML Pulmonary Rehab Facility in Chicago recovering from a triple bypass that was done on him. I came after work to visit him on August 22 as I did daily and I arrived about 715pm. When I walked over to my dad, I found him covered in a thick substance, which my husband realized was his feeding tube food. The feeding tube was supposed to of been flushed every couple of hours because of how sticky the substance is. The nurse was NOT following protocol and was not flushing, which resulted in the tubing to clog and explode all over my dad, and him laying in it for HOURS. He was calling the call button, but they were not responding physically. They would respond with "what can I help you with?" HE HAS A TRACH AND WAS NOT ABLE TO TALK! Which they should of known! I even hit the call button to see if the would come. Someone came on the microphone but I wanted to see if they would respond to knowing he was a trach patient, so I kept silent. They turned off the microphone and light, and never checked on him. I was beyond mad, and ran into the hall and yelled for a nurse. 3 CNAs attempted to "unblock" his tubing which was obviously completely blocked at this point, and all 3 of those CNAs looked very stupid. Finally his nurse arrived and realized the issue. Than they all left the room to let me father continue to sit in his "food". After 15 more minutes of him sitting there and no one taking action, I took it upon myself to start cleaning him. He had been sitting in his food for 3+ hours at this point! Once they realized I was taking things into my own hands, they rushed into the room to clean him up. This is COMPLETELY unacceptable of the nurse, who should of known better. This is COMPLETELY unacceptable of the facility as a whole to treat their patients this way. I guarantee this is happening to other patients, as the staff there had HORRIBLE bedside manners RN & CNAs. Luckily, I was able to complaint enough the following day to get him moved immediately. We had constant visitors the next 24 hours on my dad to watch the staff's actions to ensure this didn't happen again. My heart goes out to all the patients and their family's there. I hope they are able to leave that horrible facility ASAP. BUT THIS RN & FACILITY NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS!!

My husband was a patient at RML for 3 months, and I must say I was unsure at first simply because I have never had to experience a trach, not to mention he was recovering from a stroke which left them total bed bound.. however the entire staff was on top of it, they made sure all his needs were met they came, and they turned him every 2 hours they were absolutely amazing ..I've had a couple of hiccups, and took them straight to the supervisor, and they dealt with the situation immediately..,and follow up in person to assure me everything was taking care of...i pray I never have to go back but if so i strongly recommend RML. They did, a excellent job..shout out to all the CNA'S, RN'S, PT, OT, ST, house keeping, secretary's security, the case management, and the team of doctor's ...I salute you all on a job well done ❤ may God bless you all abundantly more than you can ever ask for..thank you thank you and thank you..shawn and Aretha Cephus

This place is bad I would not recommend this place to anyone. My brother Herman had Multiple Myeloma . He was a quadrapligic for over 20 years. He was there for two months from September - October 11 2016. The staff there was rude. On October 10 the nurse called my mom on my brother because she was his power of attorney. She said your son need blood would you give it to him? My mom said yes, the nurse said why you want to give him blood? You want your son to die? So they gave my brother the blood. He died the next day on the 11. When my mom signed him to released. The nurse said y'all won't be back here no more. I said to mom that was very disrespectful and rude. My brother died at R.M.L. He was dying anyway he lost a lot of weight. The sickness was eating him up, the staff there was nasty. Not only that the area there was bad. Rush Hospital was pretty nice, he was there before R.M.L. R.M.L. on Vanburan in Chicago Il.

Had my partner transferred here after brain surgery, and to rehab him off the trach And food tube. We have not physically seen him in almost two months due to COVID, only thru video chat, he's been here for five days already, and have yet been able to talk and see him thru video chat, nurses don't have time, or just plain don't answer the phone, so other than one nurse telling me " he's okay", have no idea of what he is going through. Tell me to contact case manager , who is on vacation, with apparently no one else in her place. I know he is not going to get better if he doesn't know we are with him, no updates from their "24/7" doctors, this is just heartbreaking. We whave been together for 44 years, this is not the way to go

Hi, I never heard of clergy coming for prayer for gravely ill patient counting as a visitor. My mother is loved and she was a devoted catholic. The priest from her catholic church should not be counted as a visitor for the 2 person policy. She has recently gotten sicker and I her daughter and granddaughter would like to be present when my mom gets a 5min prayer and anointed with oils from her priest. I was so happy to get the miscommunication resolved. RML really helped resolve the issue quickly and I am so grateful. My mother's religion is very important to her and her family. Thank you kindly for your rapid response and everyone's compassionate behavior. Truly blessed

My husband was here after a motorcycle accident that caused him To loose both his legs. The entire staff was very caring and supportive, but oh my goodness what can I say about Francis, the physical theapist, this guy was so caring, helped teach my husband how to use a wheel chair and gave my husband his first outdoor run after 4 months at Cook County and 60 @ RML., we will never forget Francis, I don't know his last name but I hope he see this and knows it us, and him I am talking about. Your a blessing Francis keep up the great work, please know you are so appreciated. Willie & Milly Reynolds

Im a patient here now and I'm asking to sit up in chair and it's a problem...70% of staff is so rude unprofessional and 30% of staff is good...I'm not speaking as a visitor I'm speaking as a patient....they wanna argue about doing their job...it's always the women...I'm on the 2nd floor and I'm gonna say my stay here is poorly...please be careful with who cares for your family because anybody can care while you visiting but when you not there it's a different story....THE TRURT!! ALL THEY DO IS SIT AT THE FRONT DESK IS LOL AND GODSIP

  • E. Corrigan

My fiancee was transfered there from Rush Hospital after having brain surgury. Instead of contacting me (her POA) they contacted her estranged mother who then proceeded to put a passcode in place so no one else can contact her. I have been visiting her everyday/every other day since she began her hospital stay on June 21st and now I am unable to contact her because of this mistake. Her "mother" has not visited her once during this time. Thse careless mistakes are unacceptable.

My family cannot say nice things about this place, we recovered my father after he had aneurism and had surgery at another hospital. He never recovered and his conditions became worst every day. We dealed with nurses incapable of caring, unable to take a blood sample , my father was taken for X-rays with the name of another patient.. The worst place ever. It seamed that no one knew what to do and we were hopeles, nobody there to help us. My father passed to better life.

  • Marco c

This place is basically a step before death. My relative was transferred without notice or any communication.once asked why I was told that they didn't have the right equipment or personal to handle these cases so was transferred then after . relative ended up at my sanai and ended up passing.this place is a joke and I'm telling you from experience don't just don't.if you care for your love one.cause if not they'll end up your lost one.i wish I could give them no stars

  • elvia garcia

My sister is there for respiration pulmonary treatment, but the nurses are very unprofessional because when my sister needs help no one go and check on her. And when we ask for the manager never answer the phone they just say leave a message and they go in to return the call.and they never call you back, we are thinking to move my sister where she can get better treatment.

  • Maria Ortiz

My father was in RML for 1 month 1/2. The service was okay. The only problem was that when he called for a change they use to not answer right away or even tell him they where on there way but didn’t show up for 1 hour. Lucky we use to FaceTime all the time and I had to call to tell the front desk to call his pcp to go. But it was a okay service besides that.

  • JUSTCALLME BIGGILLINOIZZ

The place may be in a bad location, but you have to look past that, and look at the bigger picture. So far it has been nothing but a good experience here; so the location should not matter. The staff is very attentive and try to do their best in every task they perform. This is a good hospital, and it's location has nothing to do with it.

  • Judith Gonzalez

This is the WORST place to take anyone!! We had the WORST experience here this place is not only in a bad neighborhood but the staff is very unprofessional and lazy and unexperience if they dont know what to do they guess.. I saw nurses sleeping in the closets, break, areas. Dont EVER leave your family alone.

  • Kyle Robinson

Terrible place..the most ghetto staff I've ever seen. They didn't answer the phone, rude, nasty! Don't ever take your family there!!!! They ignore patients! They disregard patients wishes. There's not enough room here to convey my disgust for this place. Rml on Van Buren.in Chicago.

  • Melanin Bar Co

Don't come to this hospital, the staff are negligent and they will kill your loved ones and falsify paperwork. As a employee who has witnessed this, please if you care anything about your relatives do not send them here. Mt. Sinai would be a better option than this

  • Deyoun Mables

My mom been at RML for the last 2 months and I can say this is literally the best hospital i've ever seen in my life the staff is so amazing and so caring. I really feel like my mom is getting the best care possible . I highly recommend this place

  • Sandra Contrerarty

I partook in my visit and the whole staff was absolutely marvelous, particularly the PT's and Pct's. They kept me propelled to improve along these lines, I love that. I'd generally suggest RML-Chicago

  • DonP Onthehumble

I’m sorry to say but it’s always the black workers not working or having a real bad attitude and I am black myself. Please get different staff . Best floors is 1 and barely 2 . The rest not right

  • KenandKaren Root

Worked there for several years as a RN. The place tries hard and does well! I'm objective and have no financial interest, in fact, it is owned by the Non-Profit Advocate Healthcare System.

  • Dirt Mc Girt

Their plan is to hook incoming patients up to feeding tubes and respirators to minimize the work they have to do . This is a place where people are sent to DIE. DO NOT send loved ones here

  • Candace Gibson

You have to stay on the techs in order for your family member be cared for properly! It is in a bad neighborhood but it's not bad around the hospital! This is an ok hospital, overall!!!

  • Jovan Ellis

I enjoyed my visit and the entire staff was totally awesome, especially the PT’s and PCT’s. They kept me motivated to get better so, I love that. I’d always recommend RML-Chicago
