Rocklea railway station has a limited local catchment and is awkward to reach by car compared to other nearby stations. The benefit in this is that I was able to get a park in the off-street commuter car park at 11am on a Tuesday. By this time, the limited hours ticket office was well and truly closed so the ticket machine was adequately serving the small but constant flow of intending passengers. The only way to cross the line is by stairway; no good for the disabled. However, by the time Cross-River rail eventuates, a major upgrade will see this remedied. Many more patronised stations will still be without such facilities. Rocklea is but a shadow of its former importance. It opened as an original station on the (then) Loganlea line in 1885 and in 1887 became a crossing station on the single track line. From 1886 and into the 20th century, it was the terminating station for most suburban services. Between Rocklea and Salisbury, a number of private sidings and shunting yards existed until quite recently. There was even a branch line (really a long siding) from Rocklea to a quarry at Archerfield. The line was duplicated between Yeerongpilly and Kuraby between 1950 and 1952. The standard gauge track to NSW opened in 1930 (although it was possible to catch a Queensland train to Tweed Heads from 1903 to 1961). Electric trains started running to Kingston in 1982, in time for the Commonwealth Games. The third Queensland gauge track (passing behind platform 2 at Rocklea as dual gauge track) was completed in 1991, but wasn't electrified until 1998.
Clean and tidy train station. Services are good and frequent. Toilet is open during morning hours only.
Very nice and quiet, good area. On the weekends the trains are a bit slow but still good
