I actually had never heard of this restaurant before. It was lunch time and we were famished and we googled to see if we can find an Ethiopian restaurant in the area. Shewa was only 7 minutes away! When we got there Ephrem greeted us with such warmth and sat us at our table. We looked at the menu and ordered the Fish Tibs and veggie combo and shiro, which was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Ephrem was so kind he even brought us complimentary sambusas to hold us up until our food came.( the first thing we told him when we got there was how hungry we were):) The food was freshly made to order. It was delicious and the portions were very generous. We felt so welcomed and cared for which made our dining experience even more enjoyable. We most definitely will go back, and we will bring friends and family to experience this hidden jem of a place and its delicious food. I almost forgot the delicious Complimentary Ethiopian style spiced hot tea at the end of our meal. I wish I can give them a thousand stars.

Really great Ethiopian food for a reasonable price. A combo platter can feed two of us. There's a small dine in area, but I think they do more business with carry out. The people are also very nice. We came here with friends and got the traditional coffee service while I was pregnant and couldn't have much caffeine, so I was happy to just talk with my friends while they drank coffee. The waitress brought out a special herbal tea just for me when she realized the situation. It was so thoughtful! They also have an espresso machine by the register, which I plan to try some coffee from sometime.

The food was delicious and portions were generous. Our server really went the extra mile to make sure we had everything we needed/desired. The meat combo and veggie combo on top of injera could easily feed 2-4 people. The lentil sambusas are wonderful! Enjoy a tea after your meal. Ethiopian music videos on the TV add an element of fun to the atmosphere and had us dancing in our seats. There is parking around the corner and they take cash & cards. We will be back!

Amazing food and wonderful hospitality!! My friends suggested that I have Ethiopian Cuisine when I visit Washington DC and I chose to visit Shew Ethiopian Restaurant for the same. The hospitality was amazing from the time we entered. We were served lentil sambosas and tea, which were excellent. We had a special large veggie platter, which was more than enough for two people. The preparations had a perfect blend of spices and I would highly recommend it. The owner was very attentive and polite. All our orders were served promptly. Highly recommend to people looking for vegetarian options.

I wish I could give this place more than 5 stars! My colleagues and I visited Shewa while in the city for a conference, and I'm so glad that we did. The atmosphere is unassuming, and clean and welcoming. For five of us, we ordered two veggie combos & two meat combos on gluten free injera bread (note: this place has both types of injera bread, with and without gluten). The food was absolutely delicious and priced so well - it was less than $90 combined for all of us to eat healthy portions. I also want to add that the service was great and everyone was very kind. Will definitely visit again next time I'm in DC!

I came across this restauant while visiting DC and took a few of my friends with me to have dinner. The menu had so many option to chose from but we decides to have the vegi dish also known as Tsom Beyaynetu. This dish was full of variety of vegi side dishes that were so delicious was enough for four people. It qas the tastiest Ethiopuan food I ever had. If you are ever in the DC area it is a must place to visit. I will definitly recommend this place of you want a real authentic Ethiopian dish.

Delicious food—the tibs lega (lamb) in particular was incredible. Family run, with such kind and attentive service. Easy to find gluten free / dairy free options—in fact nearly the entire menu was available to me, since their ingera is GF. I only wish I lived closer, but I will gladly come back when I’m in town. Thank you for such a lovely evening!

Came to gather with my family! This space is so warm and loving. The food was amazing on top of it! We had the rib tibs, veggie plater, and some other dishes. Each dish was satisfying and the flavors were epic. We even got some hot tea on the house. Such a beautiful space and family. We are coming again and again !!!

My family ordered 6 dishes, extra injera and dessert. The portions were big and the food was flavorful, fresh and delicious. We did not end up needing the extra injera since the main dishes came with so much. The wait was a little longer than expected but the owner gave me a sambusa with sauce while I waited. He told me he’s been in business 8-9 years in the DMV, started with a food truck on the National Mall, then moved to a storefront in Maryland, and now his business has been here in DC for a year. Shewa will definitely become my family’s go-to Ethiopian food in the neighborhood!

I only got a chance to look at the food here and smell it. And based on that alone (and what I see from some other reviewers ) I'm going to give this place five stars. I know Ethiopian food and can tell that this place is top notch! I can't wait to come back and eat some of it. I ordered a chicken sandwich at the place next door which is connected and owned by the same people. I intended on coming to this place but then went into the wrong place. And then the chicken sandwich just looked so good, I decided to get one of those. I hope work brings me back to the area which it did this time so I can try the Ethiopian food too!

Excellent Ethiopian food, in a nicely decorated, cozy space. The owner was wonderful and so attentive to us throughout the meal. My wife and I shared the meat and vegetarian combos, which was more food than we could eat. The house made mead (honey wine) was delicious, and just the right sweetness. To top off the meal we were served complimentary tea. The meal was a wonderful experience.

Aww man felt like I came to peoples house to eat. First the hospitality phone dying and let me use their iPhone charger. On the house appetizer fried lentil roll (wish I knew the name) delicious! We ordered the meat combo and veggie combo in one plate and all of it was deliciously on point. The Injera was perfect the spiciness was what you want not to hot on the mouth but detox you from inside. And the coffee best cappuccino I’ve ever had in the states!!!!! Shewa is my favorite neighborhood restaurant! When I moved to the H Street/Benning Road area, I immediately looked for a spot to become a regular at (you know how that goes). Having my go-to take out be homemade, healthy, Ethiopian cuisine was more than I could’ve asked for. The food is amazing, the owners are lovely, and I look forward to eating there every week! I love to support a Black/immigrant/Ethiopian-owned small business, especially for the quality and quantity of food! Definitely bank for your buck. 5 stars all around!

The best Ethiopian food you can get in DC, hands down! So many vegetarian options, all homemade and delicious with enormous portions. The shiro wot and spiced tea is a personal favourite, and you have to try the sambusas too. If you can, DINE IN! The atmosphere is really calming and this family restaurant truly makes you feel like family. This gem of H Street is a must. <3

We got the 7-item veggie platter and steamed fish and it was all wonderfully put together with great flavors. The fish was seasoned very nicely - good spiciness level and complemented the veggie items very well. We followed up the meal with an Ethiopian coffee which was enjoyable. Overall it was a very delicious meal and a great experience, and will definitely be visiting again.

Def a hidden gem; their Ethiopian food is amazing! The Ethiopian special - even though they serve American food, that's all I get - comes with ample portions and they don't charge a lot. You can definitely make two meals out of the special. Compared to other Ethiopian joints, this spot gives WAAYYY more than the average..and if you've been to several, you know what average looks like. I'm attaching pics of the food (but they don't really do the spot justice) and menu since I could never find one when I was searching online. (Let me know if it helps!) Long as they are around and I'm in the area, I'll be a returning customer for life.

This was the first place I got takeout from when I moved to DC. The owners were so welcoming and kind and you can see how proud they are of their lovely restaurant. It’s a very clean and comforting place with amazing artwork on the walls. The food is absolutely amazing! It’s so full of flavor and vibrant color. Every time I come here I always want to keep eating because the food is so good even when I’m already full. My absolute favorite thing to get here is the lentil sambusa, as well as the Doro Wat and the Veggie Combo! I can’t recommend this place enough it’s an absolute gem!

We arrived around 7:32pm and they close at 8pm. They were so friendly, took our order and seated us. As we were waiting another frequent customer was eating and offered my daughter some of his food! We are now leaving at 8:52pm as I write this review. It’s also extremely convenient to my home and I would recommend it highly. And of course the food was fresh, large portion, and delicious. In the picture, is two of the veggie option (VEGAN)

Shewa restaurant, part of the Royal Rooster, was one of the best restaurants I have visited in DC. The folks at the restaurant were very friendly. They sell Ethiopian coffee beans, that's a must buy.

Best ethiopian I've found so far in DC. The sambusas were great. The owner was also very kind to give me extra sambusas for free. The only problem was figuring out how to order it! It looks like on uber eats they need to fix when they serve lunch and dinner. Also I wasn't sure which phone number to call. But I eventually figured it out.

Absolutely delicious Ethiopian food and generous portions. We shared a veggie combo and a meat combo between three people and it was a great amount to share as well as a variety of flavors and spice levels. Very reasonably priced for the quality and portions. If you are a wheelchair user, there is a step up into the restaurant BUT you can enter through the restaurant next door that has no step.

From my kids: Age 9: I loved. The tea is amazing and I highly recommend the veggie platter. I think this place was just plain perfect and if you are a spice eater, like my dad, this is the place for you! Age 15: The food was delicious, there was a great variety, and the service was great as well! The coffee was delicious, and the ceremony was a great experience. Highly recommend! Azeb is so welcoming and warm hearted person. Made us fall in love with the place. Vegeterian options were plentiful and delicious. 10 out of 10.

Family owned business. The sauces that the meat combo was cooked in were delicious. Between the two of us we ordered the lentil sambosa and meat combo. Plenty of food for us. Be prepared to eat with your hands! Staff was very friendly.

The food is amazing! We got the fish cutlet, veggie platter, and key wot, all of which were delicious. Everything is beautifully spiced with great depth of flavor. The spiced tea is also a hidden gem, highly recommend. The family is so sweet and attentive, they gave complimentary sambusas and contributed to an incredibly welcoming atmosphere.

A small hole in the wall operation. The Ethiopian fare is on par with many other Ethiopian spots in the city and is one of the best fast casual places in the area. The folks that run the place are some of the nicest people in town. I know from the outside it doesn't look like much, but give the food a chance!

The restaurant itself is very cozy and inviting. We were even treated to complimentary samosas while we waited (which were also delicious)! We ordered two veggie platters. The portions are big and so flavorful. Lots of things to sample! The injera is so fluffy, like a soft, warm pillow.
