The Tandoori and Curry Club is run by Tommy and his wife. Tommy is a gentle and unassuming man that is a great example of quiet success. Starting out his restaurant career as a dish washer, he opened the Tandoori and Curry Club on the west side of Hornsby twenty five years ago and has remained at the same location for all this time, building a large and loyal following. The menu has changed little since they opened. A tweak here, a banquet there. If you’re looking for something different, the interesting stuff is up on their chalk board which varies every day. Chatting with Tommy who is Maître D’ and head chef, he says the greatest challenge they face is continuous, reliable supply of provisions. They have tweaked suppliers here and there, but know that their clientele expect quality and have worked hard to ensure they have a good group of reliable, quality suppliers. Curry Club KitchenThe Tandoori and Curry Club have three parts to their business; a dine-in business, as well as a significant take-away and local home delivery. This evening, we were looking for a light, quick meal. We started with the Pappadam Chat which is small pieces of pappadams covered with potato, yoghurt and sweet tamarind chutney. We also had the lamb cutlets (a specialty of the restaurant) which are cooked in their tandoor with garlic and crushed spices. Both were served promptly. The chops were succulent and tasty and the Pappadam Chat went with the chops perfectly. For the main course we had two simple dishes; the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Daal of the day served with Garlic Naan, plain roti and a Kashmiri Pulao which is slightly sweet rice mixed with saffron and dried fruits. The daal and rice worked together really well, the strong favours of the daal rounded-out nicely with sweetness of the rice. The Chicken Tikka Masala had large pieces of tandoori chicken in a good tomato gravy. The origins of the Chicken Tikka Masala recipe are not clear, but it is rumoured to have originated in Glasgow in Scotland by a chef called Ali Ahmed Aslam. Ali ran the Shish Mahal restaurant when a local came in for a chicken curry and complained that the meal was dry – presumably chicken tandoori. At the time, Ali’s father had an ulcer and was eating tomato soup and Ali took some of the tomato soup, added Indian spices, covered the meet and Chicken Tikka Masala was born! There’s a homely feel to the meals at the Tandoori and Curry Club (not that I could cook these dishes in my home!) but there is a familiar and comfortable to the food. Service is efficient and friendly and portions are a good size. The Tandoori and Curry Club has a loyal following from the locals and I hope they will keep serving their brand of Tandoori and Curry for another twenty five years. Expect to pay $30 – $40 per head. We visited this establishment today along with 2 other families. Service: Quite abrupt. Service was not friendly at all. For a suburban restaurant which would be dependent on local clientele, we would expect a lot friendlier service. Food: Quality of food was shocking. We ordered mango lassi, Onion bhaji, Tandoori Chicken, Fish tikka, Mixed vegetables and Malai Kofta. Probably worst Indian food we had so far. Mango lassi had a funny taste. Onion bhaji came in the shape of patty laden with salt. Chicken and fish were not fresh. Chicken was actually quite dry. Mixed vegetable and Malai Kofta had the same makhani sauce. The meal left a bad after taste in our mouth. We decided to skip the dessert. The restaurant was only 30-40% full during the evening and without our big group would have been only 25% full given that it was Saturday night. Being locals, we would give a heads-up of the dreadful restaurant quality of this place to anybody in the community venturing out for Indian food in Hornsby. We were misguided by the positive reviews below which were written either by the owner themselves or by people who have very little experience of Indian food.

Went to this restaurant today with 6 others and this place was not worth the money spent. The manager (guy with the ponytail) is really rude and has no customer service skills. His only aim was to ensure that he was upselling everything on the menu. After deciding on a banquet menu we were given ridiculously tiny portions of food and were made to purchase additional servings of rice and naan due to them not giving us the correct portions to start with. Given that we were a group of 7, whilst attempting to settle the bill within a minute of being issue, a waiter came up to us quite rudely and requested the money. He made it seem like we were going to shortchange him when they were the people that didn't give us what we PAID FOR!!!! The food was average, the service was pathetic and the place is definitely not worth going to! There's a reason why your restaurant is empty

There are two main ingredients for good experience in a restaurant, quality of food and welcoming host/staff. Having been to other restaurants around, and one Indian restaurant across the road, this place lacks both. I ordered a coke, they poured from an old almost empty bottle that didn’t have any fizz left, just sweet water. Then when staff was pouring it the lady stopped her from giving too much, saying “bas, bas...” (enough, enough ...). I saw it all because I was right next to counter which she didn’t realise. Later on I complained about it and they changed, but they did it so casually that it didn’t feel like it was a mistake. The quality of food and portions are below average compared to some other restaurants around. I don’t recommend visiting if one is after tasty food, welcoming host or family friendly ambience. Avoid if possible.

  • Kim Pearson (Kittikats)

I have eaten at a famed Indian restaurant in Sydney and their food wasn't close to how good this place is. I eat here regularly. The staff knows us very well and are always polite and attentive to us. The food quality is normally quite good - the butter chicken being excellent - however it depends on who is in the kitchen. Even when the better chef is not in the kitchen the food is still at a high standard. When I have complained (only twice in the 40 + times I've been and once was about the water) I do it discreetly, politely and respectfully to the staff. I think it is all a matter of getting what you give. When we come in we are polite and friendly to the staff and they treat us that way in turn. Every time I have friends or relatives in the area I always bring them here for dinner and we always leave satisfied.

  • Sridhar A

One star for the Food, I liked the food irrespective of other comments but won’t say it’s the best one. Zero stars for the Lady in the Billing counter so rude and Mean behaviour and am not sure how they are running the restaurant with this kind of cheap attitude, No respect, No welcome… I can eat for myself and not for someone else tummy and this lady was asking is this for snack or for Dinner; seriously I should have given right royally since I was with my kid I didn’t and this arrogant lady suggested why don’t you do a takeaway. Then better close the restaurant and do only takeaways so that no one could see this irritating people. All, If you could spare your self respect for an Indian food, this is the right place otherwise there are plenty of Indian restaurants around Hornsby, Waitara and Asquith…

Before going think twice !!! Whether you are looking for an authentic indian food to taste or some average indian food. This fits best as an average indian cuisine. Food here tastes so average that sometimes u cook best than these guys and on top the staff here are little rude. They call it tandoori but tandoori chicken tastes here so bad. They have listed variety of biryanis but none of the biryanis are good. Lot of aussies doesn't know how a real indian food tastes good, locals don't know much about "aroma" in food items such as tandoori, biryani etc... If you are thinking the food here is very nice then that is average for most indians. I'm writing this because i dont want any aussies or any others to have some wrong impression and get bluffed out of it.

Visited on a Friday evening, and there was no issue getting a table (I was early). Good menu offering a wide range of starters and mains. Good wine list. I had single samosa as starter so as not to overfill myself before the main course. The main was Karahi Chicken with rice a roti and mixed pickles. Just enough to finish on my own. Excellent, efficient, and friendly service. Highly recommended, I have been coming here for over 25 years and have never been disappointed.

Awful place. Service is super unfriendly. The (presumed) owner really smelled so bad I had to block my nose when he walked past. He didn't even say hello and spent most of the night chatting loudly to a friend, often right in front of us. This was in a completely empty restaurant. Had to stand right there. He was surly and unfriendly, as was the waiter. If they hope to attract locals they're gonna have to up their standards. The food was terrible. Clearly all pre-made with frozen ingredients (fish, vegetables were clearly frozen). Unfortunately won't be back.

  • Darren

Food was decent but totally undone by terrible service provided by lady/manager. Walked in with a bottle of coke not knowing you couldn't bring in your own drink. Staff did not have decency to let me know you'd be charged extra but just puts it on the bill without telling you. When questioning what the extra money was for and asking the question of why she didnt say anything. Physically pushed out of the way of the door to lock it telling me to pay it!! Would put negative stars if i could. Youd have a much nicer experience buying coles microwave curry

  • Teddy Boy

Dont fall for the Super Deluxe Banquet. Talk about being ripped off, the curry portions are absolutely miniscule. Three tiny little curries to share between the four of us.The portions were so small in FACT that with one of the lamb dishes there was only three pieces of lamb to share amongst the four of us, a difficult task therefore one of our group had to settle for a piece of potato. The term BANQUET is a total misrepresentation by the management & should not be allowed to be used to CHEAT people into opting for this deal.

  • Hani

Ordered online, the food was excellent. We ordered Club's mixed plater, Tandoori chicken, Aloo mater tamatar, garlic naan, plain naan , biryani and Mango Khulfi. It only 45 minutes for the food to arrive after we ordered it ! The mango khulfi was so good . Definitely will order again next time.

Best Indian food on the North Shore. Everything tastes so fresh and is perfectly spiced. The butter chicken is the best I have had, just enough kick without blowing up your mouth. They have a very extensive menu with dishes I have not seen elsewhere. Great Range of vegetarian options too, most times we will get one over a meat dish as they are so good. Portions are a good size in the 'Never Ending Bowls' as we call them. Service is always attentive and friendly and the food comes out without a long wait.

  • Michael Hulo

I ordered a takeaway palak paneer last night. I used to go there regularly but had not been in around 2 years. It was the worst palak paneer I'd ever had. It was far more brown than green, it was the consistancy of tinned soup, ... basically slop, it tasted pretty horrible, and had way to much ginger through it. I actually wonder if it was from a packet because i've had better packet curries than this was. Definately not fresh and restaurant quality. I won't be going back.

  • Vishal Arora

We were quite hesitant to visit this place but we gathered courage and entered, though there is another restaurant near by that we had tried before and were okay with the food there. Anyways, so we ordered 3 things - Mixed platter, Gosht and Chicken Tikka masala and all the dishes were better than the other. This is definitely going to be on my permanent list going forward. Highly recommend visiting this quiet place and you won't regret it. Cheers

  • 80 Series Landcruiser TV

Amazing food! The lamb cutlets deserve a reward of their own! Tommy and crew go above and beyond to explain the dishes and the portion sizes never leave you hungry. Finish your meal off with the Mango Kulfi, it's amazing. Can't recommend Tandoori Curry Club enough, lovely food and great people. Decor could use a freshen up along with the frontage but once you're in, the food is magnificent. Best local Indian and no blaring loud music.

  • Jasvir Kaur

We went there for my husband’s birthday dinner and they ruined it properly. The waiter was so rude, he was serving food like he was throwing it on our face, no humanity. He served only one naan for two people and didn’t came to ask for top up but disappeared we wait for another naan and after ages I called him from kitchen. Very disappointed with customer service. Palak paneer had no taste. Pappadum chaat was so stale and poorly made.

  • Kaddie 1908

The kind of indian food that you crave for! Totally the yummiest! Butter chicken was to die for, the cheesy naan was the best I've ever tasted and the rice was so fluffy and cooked to perfection. Had such a nice chat talking to the owner of the business while waiting for our take away, she was so lovely and seemed genuinely interested in us. There are so many Indian restaurants in this area, do yourself a favor and visit THIS ONE!!

  • Christy Summerhill

Definitely still the best kept secret in Sydney. We've been going here for a decade now and we've never had a bad meal or experience. It makes me think that some of these bad reviews may be fake? And throughout my travels, this is still the best Indian food I've ever had! Bring your appetite and go for one of the banquets. Butter chicken or butter vegetables is a favourite. I've heard it takes him 3 days to make it.

I have been visiting Tandoori and Curry Club since last 9 years and love the food they provide. The Ambience of restaurant is perfect and Tommy makes sure that all his guests are well attended. I would personally recommend lamb cutlets and other meat curries of the restaurant. Tommy is personally involved in managing the whole restaurant so we get the same perfect quality again and again.

  • Helen Johnson

they must have an unsupervised appentice in the kitchen. What is usually a spectacular meal was rather mediocre. mint sauce out of packet. palak paneer was brownish and the pakoras were just poorly made. We were disappointed because Tommy's has been a joy over the years. hope it was only a one off experience.

  • Totti Marzie

I will never comeback to this restaurant since the Service, Quality and Quantity are very POOR spc the size of their Tandoori chicken are totally JOKE comparing the other Indian Restaurant around Made a complaint before with hope they'll Improve , but when i come back it's even Worse, so Disappointed! would like to give ZERO star AVOID this Restaurant if Possible!

  • anshul agrawal

Very good Indian food but very poor customer service in the Hornsby area. They charge $5 for delivery and then expect customers to come to the nearest roundabout to collect the food. The owner of this place is an extremely rude and arrogant person who picks up arguments with customers and treats them as if she is doing them a favour by giving them food. Thumbs down.

  • Ashish Yadav

Definitely no way close to authentic Indian taste...the curries were bland and lacked flavor. Breads were good though, hence an extra star. Importantly, the lady at the counter was too rude n disrespectful. Surely needs a lesson in hospitality!! Just happened to visit the place as it was on the way...the experience, however, has ensured a definite ‘NO’ in future !

  • Charlotte Slade-Smith

for six years I went here for dinner every year for my birthday. the best Indian food I have ever had in my entire life. the staff were always super sweet and the atmosphere is great. sadly I don’t go here anymore but only because I moved interstate. as soon as I am in sydney again I will be visiting!!

Tried Naan and Curries. Naan was good. Gravy was really delicious but didn't ate more than two pieces of chicken as it was uncooked and totally white & redish from inside. The attitude of waiter was Sh*t. We tried to use the NSW food vouchers but was rejected saying they can only receive one per group. 1 Star for Naan 1 star for Indian songs on background

  • Paul N-R

A lovey family style business, where the food is amazing, they have the best Indian food on the North Shore. The service is always attentive, and the garlic and cheese Naan is to die for. A good variety of dishes, with something to please everyone from spicy to mild and not pricey. The family are always happy to go to Tandoori & Curry Club.

  • Gordon Atkinson

The service here is above and beyond, they go out of their way your ensure you enjoy your meal. I have been going here for nearly a decade after living in Bombay/Mumbai and New Delhi for another decade and I feel like I'm still eating the same authentic food I was over the ocean in India. Couldn't recommend tandoori and curry club enough!

  • Avik Ghosh

The food was great, and the staff was great. All the items ordered were great, and I just loved the Mango Kulfi. The chicken as well was soft and juicy. The treatment at the hotel was definitely better than the resturant across the street(Mahmaan). I can definitely recommend this place, over Mahmaan (where the staff is soo very rude).

  • Namrata Bajaj

We tried paneer butter masala and naans. The food tasted amazing. They have a wide range of non-vegetarian options aswell. Especially would like to call out the Peshawari naan. It was subtle yet flavorful. Price range is relatively cheap, compared to other options in the area. The place is super clean. Will definitely visit again.

  • Ruby Bilko-Kwon

I used to go here when I was younger, living in Sydney. Mum and I would go once a month and I loved it. I discovered mango lassis here and although they’re the only thing I remember about this place (as well as the bright yellow facade), I have nothing but happy memories of this place. Thank you Tandoori and Curry Club …

  • NO LIMIT

Food was average, customer service lacking. The old ladie had more attitude then two angry chihuahua’s. Would recommend not bringing anyone to this place especially if on a date or want privacy, the male staff member hovering around the table watching every bite you eat. The place was empty, should of taken that as sign.

  • R D

Disgraceful service. Lady Owner/ Manager (?)needs to learn basic customer service skills. Incredibly rude lacking in basic hospitality skills. Doctor from interstate passing through Hornsby treated like beggar. Will definitely not recommend. No wonder not busy on a Saturday night. Far better service available elsewhere.

  • Consumer Account

The food wasn't too bad but I can honestly say that I believe the reviews on google saying this place is good value are fake. When the dish came out it was so small I was sure it was a complementary entree. Come to find out that I was nearly $40 deep after a few bites. Left me hungry enough to have a big mac after.

  • Chloe Byrnes

We are locals and have been coming here for over 20 years, both for takeaway and to eat in. The food is always good, the staff are always friendly. The Tandoori chops are excellent. Other Indian restaurants in the area are not bad but it has always been our number one choice.

  • Leanne Hill

While the food was very good, we booked on the basis that it accepted service NSW dining vouchers. However, they said that they were no longer with the programme as they had not been reimbursed. They did not accept the voucher. Very poor form! I will probably not return.

Ambience, food, value and service all hit the spot every visit. I have been here many times and always happy with everything. A regular choice for dinner. See you soon!

  • Manpreet Gill

Lovely venue with amazing food and friendly staff. Each dish is packed full of flavours. Definitely worth checking out. One of the best Indian food I have had to date

  • Subhash C Mahat

Food was not bad but the waiter kept on standing and staring at us for every bite we eat, so felt totally uncomfortable. You guys need to take care of this onwards.

Been there about a month ago. Food quality and quantity, both are poor. Not recommended at all. The other Indian restaurant across the road is a far better place.

  • Ervin De La Cruz

Not worth the money. Average indian food and the portions are really small. Customer service may appear good at first but the manager comes off as a bit rude.

  • Shils Rita

Unfortunately their curries are not tasty. Not authentic indian food. Seems like a basic blend with added meat and served from there. Not coming back again.

  • Joy Caddy

Love the food. Staff are all very professional and attentive. It is a regular favourite of ours and we are so fortunate to have them in the neighbourhood.

  • Gus Gulicher

The best Indian restaurant in Hornsby and surrounds. Won’t find better food.

Ambience was fine, service was good and food can improve. But would like to mention that food was one of the good ones I have had in Sydney yet.

  • Akanksha Jaiswal

Amazing food and well balanced Indian Cuisine. We are vegetarian and have struggled to find a tasty paneer butter masala, here our search ends.

Best Indian food I’ve ever had, consistently good, fresh and full of flavour. Excellent service always. Love the old school atmosphere too.

Hairs in food! bad and abrupt phone manner! Not ordering from them again $70 wasted. Goodness knows what else is in my food not impressed

  • Balwinder Singh

Best restaurant in hornsby and the owner is very friendly and welcoming, he offered me great discounts on our order.... what a legend!!!

  • william smith

I only get take away but it's probably one of the better indian restaurants and is super consistent with the quality of their curry.

  • Perry Bhadada

Food is below average and not at all freshly cooked. Service was very pathetic as well, it took them an hr to give us the food.

  • Tracy Bourke

Great food, fast service. I've only ever had a fabulous food experience. Tommy is the ultimate host and has been for 20+ years!

  • jezza 1555

Tiny portions, over buttered curry. Huge charge on rice. Very expensive
