I stopped in here this morning and ordered a creme brulee latte with a raspberry cream cheese danish. Before we get into the coffee and danish, let me say that I was really digging the design and vibe of this place. They managed to accomplish a more classy and intimate setting, but at the same time it was also laid back and easy going. I found this to be a unique combination of atmospheres for a coffee shop. Although, they do have wine and a good whiskey selection so that may be why there is an overlap in the settings that I was experiencing. I also appreciated the no laptops on the weekends concept that they have implemented. Even though I didn't find myself chatting with any locals, which is what they stated the goal of this concept is, I think it's a great idea! I find that we too often bury ourselves into technology and forget to experience the things around us. It's a step in the right direction, and a good way to increase the interactions among others. Now, back to the coffee and danish. The creme brulee latte was spot on and the danish was exactly what I needed to get my morning started. I liked the location of this place, and I definitely see The Hobbyist being one of my go to coffee shops!

The female barista with the long black/brown hair gives me dirty looks like she hates my guts for using my e-book reader at the bar. I asked other baristas who told me I was totally fine, since it didn't have a keyboard. I spent a lot of money here and left good tips, but I am not coming back again because I don't like spending money at a place I feel hated. I personally don't like their "unplugged" policy, as well the fact that different staff enforce it differently. Personally, I understand if the bar is crowded to not have someone sitting around not buying anything. But, if you are there buying drinks and there is nobody around (like how it was when I was there) it makes no sense to tell people not to sit there. As someone with herniated discs its not easy to find adequate high chair seating in the place either. And , to be honest, I have never been to any bar or coffeeshop around town who forbids me from using my e-reader at the bar, which is ridiculous in itself. I was really liking this place and most of the baristas are real nice, but it takes one bad apple to chase you out of the place. Also, they need to rethink their policy of keeping people away from the bar area.

What a hidden gem! This is one of my favorite spots in Charlotte to grab a coffee or drink - the coffee is exceptional, especially their unique seasonal lattes, their speciality cocktails are delicious, the staff is lovely and extremely attentive, the decor and overall vibe is chic yet welcoming. Quite honestly, this place is the absolute BEST - a lovely spot to hang where the staff and owners truly treat you like family.

Parking lot in the back, a few spots in the front and street parking on the side. Parking in Charlotte is a struggle, so a HUGE bonus that this place has free parking all around.
Kid-friendliness
A great neighborhood spot that's family- and kid-friendly. If you live in Villa Heights or NoDa, it's a lovely walk - bring the family and grab a coffee, drink and / or snack.

I want so badly to like this place. But I just can’t. Walking distance from our house and we have come here a ton of times but literally every time we come there is a hilariously bad interaction. Whether it’s the cashier telling us there was “no way to know” whether a pastry was vegetarian or not, being scolded for having our dog on a leash while we ordered only to see the same manager petting a dog in line the next time we were there or waiting 10 minutes for a cold pastry to be placed in a bag it’s always some completely avoidable example of poor service. My breaking point to leave this review was being charged 45 cents for water (which I had to fill myself) after we paid $19 for two coffees and one pastry. I get it. Cups cost money. And our service was very friendly (and apologetic) this time. I’ve never left a Google review before but please make some changes, The Hobbyist.

lovely cafe, bar, & bottle shop. beautiful modern industrial space with plenty of seating (comparatively in CLT) that walks the line of a clean cut modern & vintage vibe without feeling too cold or crowded. lots of plants throughout the space and soft seating as well as tables and a full bar. great selection of craft beers and wine. the coffee is excellent - they use hatchet beans and their menu is pared down with excellent, unique seasonal offerings. you can always get a good latte, any time of day, but some of their team is definitely more beer & wine experienced or coffee experienced - if you get one of the baristas who are really into coffee, your drink will be incredible. their black walnut latte is one of my favorite lattes i’ve ever had. incredible iced or hot. overall 5/5 for attentive staff & service, space, and selection. if you haven’t been yet, add the hobbyist to your next outing!

One of the more "Hip" coffee places I've had the pleasure of visiting. Everything in this place screams we take our coffee and drinks very seriously. I literally watched them weigh each part of my iced latte, from the cup with ice to milk to the shot of espresso; quite impressive. And with all that effort, my coffee was top notch, just the right balance of coffee bitterness and creamy whole milk. They also have a huge selection of wine and beer, and good sampling of options on tap. This place is definitely an upscale, get relaxing spot to have a coffee or a drink, whether you're trying to get some work done or just meeting a friend. I'll definitely be back!

  • Sarah Scruggs

The Hobbyist has what many cafes lack these days. They have an understanding of their espresso pulls and the art of making a drink to give you a beautifully presented beverage with the right flavor as well. I had a few of their selection. The chai latte is exactly what a chai latte should be. It didn't taste overly sweet like many do and the different spices and herbs of the chai were present and clear. Their espresso was also wonderful. I'm not usually someone who enjoys just straight espresso but I suppose I do when it is done right. The Hobbyist does it right. The live band in the background also helped add to the experience. Very pleased.

What a cool place! Stopped by before brunch for some coffee. We ordered a drip coffee and the honey bee flat white (hot, oat milk). The music inside was very loud, lots of punk rock tunes. It made for an interesting vibe, but I have no complaints. I want to go back to try their pastries or their bottles of beers/wines. They got pretty busy but the staff was friendly! Lots of seating options available, parking spots in the back too. It’s so cool that they have plants and other little merchandise items for sale. Definitely want to return next time I’m in Charlotte.

I absolutely love going to the hobbyist. It’s my favorite coffee shop in Charlotte because the vibes are soooo good. Everyone is so kind and friendly, and it’s a great place to make a barista friend ✨ oh and they do some really cool events like tastings and mini night markets! Their managers, Alice and Nate, are such kind people and I love seeing them there! My favorite drink here so far has been the strawberry matcha, but I love their cappuccinos and lattes too. They also often have vegan pastries in their case!!

Was recommended by a friend to check this place out and I am glad I did. I love everything about this place. They have great coffee and a chill spot to hang out or get some work done. An amazing selection of beer and wine. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient in filling my order. I noticed they have a nice selection of bourbon on the shelf and will have to come back on another day for that. If you love coffee, beer or wine this place is a must stop and I can’t wait to go back.

Randomly found this place on a random google search for places to chill in Charlotte before a concert. This spot was everything and more. We came at evening time and we’re looking for an espresso martini and good coffee. Gosh we were blown away. Incredible service, perfectly curated music, friendly service and a dim/moody/cozy atmosphere. The Black Walnut Latte was everything I needed. We came back again the next afternoon and Ty was so kind! ✨

You are 150% MISSING OUT if you haven’t visited this cozy, modern coffee/wine haven in Noda. The Bar is perfect during the day for getting work done & meeting amazing people. The staff here is INCREDIBLE. Never in my life have I met baristas as friendly & warm as these girls! Coffee is delicious (and the matcha was even better! no added sugar in this matcha!!!) They have a very impressive wine & beer selection, tons of local and unique brands. I will be coming back and bringing friends! Make sure you visit this shop!!!!!

  • Akira Grey

They do not have flavored syrup shots like raspberry and strawberry. Other than that I guess everything was fine? Not being able to get some of your favorite flavored coffees is kind of 99% of going there...right? Otherwise it was good.

I came here with my sister to unwind while she works on her college work, and I had a very tasty lavender vanilla latte. I wholeheartedly recommend it! However, the service wasn't the best when we ordered it. Although our cashier wasn't as warm and helpful as I had hoped, the environment was definitely the most important factor, and it was a lovely place to motivate people to do their work. Definitely would visit this location for work or just to chill out.

Most underrated coffee shop in Charlotte. I might be bias because this place is in our neighborhood. Went there on a Friday night, there was live Jazz music and tons of drink options. If there is nothing on tap for you, you can choose from plenty of bottles and cans in their bottle shop. Everything was 10/10 and we are definitely back for their $3 mimosas on Sundays. Attaching their weekly specials so you can plan your date.

The coolest place ever. They have coffee options, but the beer and wine options are the reason I go there, in addition to the chill atmosphere. They hold jazz nights there once a month which i also highly recommend. Overall a great place to hang with friends, or wfh in the afternoon!

This cafe is really aesthetically pleasing and the atmosphere was very relaxing. My sister and I came on a Thursday to study and got the lavender vanilla latte and it was amazing! The only reason for the 4/5 stars was that the bartender did not seem interested in us as customers and did not seem very lively. The bathrooms are clean and so was the furniture.

This place is next door from a business I frequent and today I finally decided to stop in. I tried the Iced Marigold Mocha (I think that’s what it was called). I loved it. 8/12/2020 Stopped here to try something new in NoDa. This place has a great atmosphere and the coffee is delicious. I ordered a Latte and their vegan banana and chocolate chip bread. Total was $9.47 plus a tip. The banana bread was incredibly delicious and tasted freshly made! They have a big assortment of wines and beers which I plan on coming back to take a closer look at. They have seating inside, outside, and a bar. Definitely worth a stop!

  • Tonya Cruz

I had the Thai basil strawberry matcha latte. I had oat milk instead of traditional milk. It was delicious! I had never tried matcha before and I really enjoyed their take on it. Great seating areas and good atmosphere. They have three types of non-dairy milks available, which is nice for those with allergies.

Service. Service. Service. I went to a cafe down the street and decided to go somewhere else to sit down after the lack of quality service. I came to The Hobbyist and felt right at home. The man behind the counter had the sweetest disposition. He was genuinely excited about everything I wanted to order. After having his recommendation for tea, I decided to grab a couple to-go beers because I appreciated the staff so much.

  • K J

Notice how frequently the staff changes at this shop. You don’t see that at most spots in the neighborhood. Says a lot. Response to your comment: Not “strange” to point out the extremely high turnover rate (which negatively impacts the quality of your product) and seeing an entirely new staff that every time I’ve come in. But sure, everyone else must be the problem. Keep doing what you’re doing, it’s clearly working.

  • D. J. Barton

Been a few times while house sitting for a friend. It’s always over a ten minute wait to get my latte, even when no drinks in line in front of me. Barista’s seem to busy chatting or flirting with people, than to make the orders! Todays latte not only took 10 minutes, but the milk was burnt!

I love places that serve coffee and beer at the same time like this place. I just went in to buy a few cans of beer. It’s very clean and quiet even though there was a lot of people there on their laptops. It seems like it would be a great place for that. The canned/bottled beer selection is pretty good and the prices are fair, $7 for a Burial. I’ll be back.

Had a latte and flat white. Large and spread out space with lots of seating, love the decor/vibe. Coffee was pretty good but 2 criticisms would be milk was a tad overheated and espresso a little harsh. It did mellow out eventually and finish nicely. Overall nice shop but for me plaza midwood undercurrent is still reigning champ.

Love the idea of a coffee bar that also doubles as a chill spot with draft beers! The Hobbyist also had cooled beer that can buy to drink there or make four packs to go. Did I mention wine that they can uncork for you? It has couches and tables, as well as an actual bar. You can stay as little as long as you'd like. The coffee was delicious, and I loved all the drinking options! Will def be returning.

What an awesome bottle shop with great coffee, amazing selection of wine, craft beer and a nice surprise to see some bourbon as well. WOW!! I ordered the Iced Black Walnut Latte with half of oatmilk & almond milk. It was very unique and delicious. This place is definitely a good place to work and study. Surrounding music isn't too loud and here has very calm vive. It reminds me of SF. The interior was nice as well. Everything was good. It took almost 40 minutes from my home. But I am glad that I moved forward to visit here :)

An adorable little shop on the edge of an upcoming area in NoDa. They serve an excellent selection of coffees, beers, and wines along side delicate pastries and treats. The owners are awesome and the staff is pretty great too. Very friendly and knowledgeable about what they do. It's refreshing to see a shop like this with a modern twist on an old classic. I will be back for a long time coming.

I had the best Carmel macchiato I've ever had in my life from there! Great atmosphere! I went to work on my book, and surprisingly enough, I was able to concentrate even though it was busy and pretty crowded. I loved how they had plenty of outlets at the bar for charging my tablet. If I lived in Charlotte, I'd go all the time.

You gotta know the good cafe from the first step by the great smell of coffee. And that’s what you can experience at the Hobbyist. The coffee is absolutely good! real taste of espresso if you’re looking for. However it was a bit time taking precess for two cups of cappuccino in not a very busy day. The location is kinda in a remote area.

Wonderful atmosphere, and I was thrilled to see they have parking in back. :). Very cool vibe...great water dispensary (nice option at no charge or can buy bottled water) and coffee options galore. They serve some food/pastries, but not a full kitchen service. Overall great impression, and comfy seating situated well so not too loud.

Traveling from Colorado, this place is awesome for coffee or bakery goods. A very reasonable price. My friends had beer and loved it. You have to visit here.

Grab a coffee or a beer and chat with friends or get some work done. The vibe here is awesome. Then buy some beer or wine and take it back! Love this place

The coffee is good, nothing crazy but very solid. Interior is really nice, great place to work.

Both of the drinks that we ordered tasted good, but were not hot. Will definitely try them again and adjust it was a one-off thing.

The waitress is very professional and friendly, she opened a new bag of coffee for me just to ensure the freshness of the coffee!

Sorry, just had a cup of coffee but it was average at best. Nice place, worth a second shot, but coffee is questionable. More
