New York is not short on incredible museums to visit. There’s practically one for every interest one might have. And while the Met and the Gugg might satiate your need for historical architecture and classic collections, or MOMA and Whitney with their contemporary ones, no other museum really has the kind of serenity and ambience that the Noguchi offers. One does not need to be a fan of sculpture to truly appreciate his art. Taken as a whole, the museum provides plenty to look at and interact with in a matter of speaking. The space itself acts as another presence among the art. And on this particular day with the rains coming down, the art transformed into something new. Which is part of its charm being in a partially open air building. Seeing the sculptures glisten as they became slick with moisture made them seem almost alive. It’s fascinating to see the amount of work Noguchi created and the variety of it. From granite blocks, basalt mounds or Italian marble, all were subject to his transformations in unique and interesting ways. Useless Architecture as he called it or barely functional furniture, much of what is on display, is a reminder to the audience of the desire to be outdoors. It really does give you a sense of being outside among nature even when you’re inside a studio. It’s not a large museum, but one you can truly get lost in for a while. Multiple rooms and a second floor create multiple paths to explore. And there’s even a smaller corner gallery area that includes works of art by others, curated by the organization. I don’t normally rant about a museum gift shop, but the one at the Noguchi features some more relevant and tasteful souvenirs at good prices. Unfortunately none of his lamps were available for purchase at the time of visit due to supply chain issues. But here’s hoping in the near future that will change. It’s recommended to purchase tickets in advance but you can also visit on First Fridays for free entry as I did. Overall, if you’re looking for a museum jaunt but prefer to stay away from the crowds or just prefer to leave Manhattan altogether, I highly recommend heading over to Queens for this one.

The Noguchi Museum is a unique institution dedicated to the life and work of Isamu Noguchi, one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. Located in Queens, New York, the museum showcases a comprehensive collection of Noguchi's work, including sculptures, drawings, and architectural models. The museum's serene indoor and outdoor spaces, designed by Noguchi himself, provide visitors with a meditative atmosphere to contemplate the artist's profound impact on modern sculpture. The museum's collection features over 250 works by Noguchi, including his iconic sculptures made from a variety of materials such as granite, marble, and bronze. The collection also includes examples of his furniture and lighting designs, which showcase his innovative approach to creating functional objects that blur the line between art and design. Noguchi's drawings and sketches offer insight into his creative process, and his architectural models demonstrate his interest in integrating sculpture and design into the built environment. One of the museum's most impressive features is its outdoor sculpture garden, which spans nearly an acre and features some of Noguchi's largest works. Visitors can explore the garden's winding paths and reflective pools while experiencing the interplay between the sculptures and the natural landscape. The garden also includes a serene meditation area and a cafe where visitors can enjoy refreshments surrounded by Noguchi's art. Beyond its permanent collection, the Noguchi Museum also hosts temporary exhibitions that explore the intersection of Noguchi's work with contemporary art and culture. The museum also offers a range of educational programs, including workshops, lectures, and tours, that provide visitors with a deeper understanding of Noguchi's life and work. Fun fact: Isamu Noguchi was a multitalented artist who also dabbled in set design, choreography, and even collaborated with dancer Martha Graham on several productions. His diverse creative interests and influences are reflected in the dynamic and varied collection at the Noguchi Museum.
Super pretty sculptures. But also kind of smaller than expected. You have to go outside to get to the second floor and also to the other sections. So dont go if its cold and/or raining! The outside part is part of the experience. Go during the free days for sure. Good for if u want a quick date lol. But also theres not much to do around that area except go to Costco... and this sculpture park near that but that took me like 10 min to walk through. Also! Not many places to sit down too. Except the benches outside and the small stool(s) upstairs that Im pretty sure is more for staff not visitors. So definitely dont go if u get tired easily and its cold out. Side note: I still had to wear face masks. They have extra at the front but they call you out if they see u without one at anytime.
Very interesting indeed! I always enjoy Japanese art work and this museum offers some interesting collections. We first came to this museum because my son's art project was displayed here since the school was working together with the museum for the art class. Then we enjoyed the visit to the museum. The collections showcased are unique! Incredible details with various mediums and stories really fascinate me. We really enjoy the Japanese way of contemporary arts and even many of them are directly touched to the American way. We saw NASA related items, barbie, Hermes bag and more, made of various materials. Don't miss it if you're around.
We went on Free Friday so entrance was free and to be honest I am glad I did not have to pay for the exhibit. They do not give you a map so you kind of roam your own way through but it has connecting rooms so be sure not to miss anything. The sculptures themselves do not have any descriptions rather they are at the entrance of each room with a few sheets to share with the rest of the visitors. The gift shop is extremely overpriced so that was quite disappointing. I do recommend going for a quiet weekday adventure.

WOW def orth the easy trek from Manhattan! Thoroughly enjoyed a peaceful Friday pm here inside and outside in the garden. Impressive and budding custom museum built around Noguchi's remarkable sculptures with nature's elements. Museum attendees are respectful and quiet. ENJOY! TIP: Take the museum tour, even if you don't do the whole hour+ it is very informative. We had a knowledgeable and interactive group with Qs and participation, thanks to JOE who gave us a phenomenal tour. Friendly, very passionate and kind answering all our Qs thoroughly!

Really beautiful and interesting art museum. Obviously hard to get to, but I say it was worth the trek! We came on a Saturday afternoon. You can buy times entry tickets online, but we just walked in and bought tickets. There was a 3pm talk about their temporary exhibit and it was so informative. The guide talked for around an hour straight and it was entirely engaging and captivating. They explained each art piece and the reasoning behind why each piece was chosen to be a part of the exhibit and how they expand our social contexts on Japanese internment and the artists born of that painful historical event.
Wow wow wow!!! This was a terrific experience! I do really recommend anyone being in NYC to visit this small, lovely museum. It is such a nice place with great architecture and Japanese vibes. The exhibition is well done and you can even participate in it by creating your own labels or reflecting the sculptures by creating one from modurit. The outdoor space is great to chill and take a deep breath. I love also the original museum store. One of my favorite place in NYC.

It's one of the best museums I've had the opportunity to experiment. This place is pure heaven for anyone who loves sculpture and great design. The garden is an oasis of serenity. I really enjoyed the exhibitions such as ''Sun at Noon'', ''Akari: Sculpture by Other Means''. The Noguchi Museum is wheelchair accessible and there is a Citi Bike Station for those who feel like biking there. If you're a student, don't forget to bring your ID ($5 instead of $10). During the first Friday of every month year-round, the admission is free. Fun fact: The Noguchi Museum is located in front of a Costco.
Great place to bring family and friends Very nice very clean positive atmosphere Many different types of people A big crowded on the weekend. Was tricky to take pictures without people in the shots However we did arrive at a good time , around 3:30pm by the time we were leaving 4:30 it got a bit more crowded and a line was forming outside Would like to go again during the weekday when less busy Overall great experience and gave me tons of design ideas

Might be one of my favorite museums now. The installations and presentation of masterpieces by Noguchi was consistent and pristine. Every floor had its own meditative quality that transported you into a being of zen and taste. And the museum shop? Amazing. An exhibit in itself! They have chairs in every room for those wanting to take their time to rest and absorb the ambience. Teacher discounts are available! Which made it $12/teacher for entry.

A small but hidden gem of a museum. (Honestly, I prefer small museums anyway, as I sometimes feel overwhelmed by gigantic collections.) This is feels like an intimate tribute to an incredible sculptor. There’s something deeply calming and profound about Noguchi’s work. The shapes and moods he creates with wood and stone are impressive. Tickets are also very affordable- only $12 for adults! In an hour you can see everything and even have time for a coffee. Peruse beautiful and creative (if pricey) gift shop treasures for sale while your latte foam is being steamed.
Beautiful museum! Love the sculptures! The visitors were quiet so it was an enjoyable experience for all visitors to view the exhibit in a quiet space! The garden was beautiful and tranquil! I enjoyed sitting out there and listening to the birds and even saw a squirrel! The gift shop was a visual treat too! The shop was filled with really cool things to purchase! Had a wonderful visit here. Would definitely love to visit again!

If you like art and minimalism this is the ideal place. When you enter you feel an energy of tranquility that invites you to think, reflect and walk. the museum shop offers books, lamps and decorative objects. All the museum staff are very friendly. In Praise of Caves: Organic Architecture Projects from Mexico by Carlos Lazo, Mathias Goeritz, Juan O’Gorman, and Javier Senosiain. The sculptures of Mathias Goeritz was amazing.

The staff is very professional and friendly. This is a quiet museum that I had kept missing when I lived in the neighborhood. Should have visited sooner. With the Bloomberg Connect app, you can read the guide on your own device in your own pace. I can see the simplicity in the art influenced by Japanese culture. Also loved the garden. Suggest go in the late evening so that you can enjoy day/night view of them.

A completely fresh take on what a museum can be. I recommend the free hour-long guided tour around the property. The spaces are divided in "Areas" and one can follow them in order to understand and experience the artist's vision. There is a lovely shop where you can buy postcards and original Noguchi designs. The museum has affiliations with many organizations for free entry, eg. ICOM and AAM.

Hidden in a little known part of the city, the Noguchi Museum is an oasis of calm and beauty. The museum costs $10 to enter and is filled with an excellent range of the artist's work. There's also a garden where you can sit and relax and admire some of the large pieces there. it's a truly understated museum and yet one which does not fail to please and intrigue. Noguchi's work spans some 60 years and at the museum, you get a good feel for his art. Definitely recommended if you are a fan of modernist sculpture.
Book tickets ahead of time and download the Bloomberg app they use. This place is a hidden gem. The art is spread out pretty well, there’s a good amount of seating throughout even if it’s a small museum. The art is unique and even if you’re like me and don’t understand it all it’s nice. I like it and will continue to swing by as the exhibitions change out.

This is such a beautiful space with open space and an impressive focus on lighting . Feels like a retreat from the busy city. The collection is impressive. The person at the door was so kind in telling us to make another visit in the spring when their cherry blossoms bloom in the garden. Lovely to feel the pride of the folks that work there.

Pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this museum. Worth the trek from Manhattan. Spent a little over an hour in the space. Also spent some time in the garden after- would recommend sitting and enjoying the space after you walk through everything! Went late after on a random Friday in August and it wasn't crowded at all.

Came here because had nothing much to do and was nearby the area. It took us around 1 hour to walk around - it not a big museum but not as small as I thought it was either. There were many parts to it and had interesting sculptures. The best part was really the lanterns and lights section where you can take pictures that are Instagram worthy. If you have student id, tickets are only $5 each so pretty worth a visit!
I LOVE THIS MUSEUM!!! Highly recommend a visit. The first Friday of the month is free. I came knowing nothing about the sculptor, but I was mesmerized by his work and the tranquil, calm atmosphere. It's really a lovely way to spend an afternoon. I spent several hours there and wish I could have spent more. There is an outdoor garden and a very pretty little cafe. It's extremely beautiful. Love it!
I never heard of it before, the location is a bit off the beaten path. It is small but one of the most unique if you like Sculpturing and the Japanese way of aesthetics. There is a small Japanese garden, and small shop with unique and beautiful thing and also a coffee/tea. There is an outdoor sculptures garden (not connected to the museum) just around the block and some nice coffee places.
For those moments when you crave inner peace, this is the place to be. The zen garden works its magic as you stroll along the pebble-strewn path. And if you prefer, simply sitting by the expansive window, basking in the sunlight, can do wonders to brighten your mood.

A lovely meditative experience full of stunning sculpture in an environment that lets you appreciate it. The majority of the pieces don't come with plaques which leave you open to interpret their meaning and place within the space. The museum, for one that has a small footprint, is surprisingly large inside. It took about an hour to go through the exhbits and it is well worth the trip.
A true gem in Long Island City. It is unique, tranquil, exciting and bold. It has spacious indoor exhibitions as well as outdoor features. This is where I take friends and visitors and they are always impressed. I enjoy just stopping by for a quiet moment of relaxation in the sculpture garden among the bamboo. Come to Long Island City and visit the Noguchi - you will love it!
Such a nice museum, a hidden gem at Astoria. It is not very big, but it is very spacious with a nice setting of the sculptures with some natural light. There's also an outdoor sculpture area. I specifically like the section on body-space devices. There are information sheet in each exhibit room with a brief introduction and detailed description of a few sculptures.
One of the best small museums in all of NYC. A perfect minimalist space for the ageless classic Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) sculptures. Fascinating current exhibition "In Praise of Caves", nicely interwoven with the regular Noguchi exhibit. The free brochure for this exhibition available at the museum is excellent and very informative. Nice museum store too.
Very beautiful museum with great Japanese inspiration! Really loved all the sculptures and origami. The whole place was tranquil and relaxing. There was a lot to explore and it wasn't too cluttered or confusing to navigate. Highly recommend stopping by for some culture!

Among my favorite museums in the city, it is a testament to space and light and beautiful art; a zen garden and a respite from the chaos of the surroundings. I come to the Noguchi regularly to revel in Isamu’s pieces, the space he created, and the peacefulness it exudes. His sculptures continue to amaze as one of America’s greatest artists.
Lovely and serene museum. Would highly recommend joining the free tour at 2pm - our tour guide was friendly, informative, and championed hearing from the group. Recommend purchasing a ticket online beforehand as well.

Great sculpting icon, the museum is near and dear to me. First visited in college, I believe the Asia Society had a bus in from Manhattan. Slight walk from the N-train is well-worth the experience. MTA buses are also in the area. Recently, they opened space across the street for special exhibits, too.

Truly a beautiful museum that celebrates the life of a wonderful Japanese-American artist, Isamu Noguchi. The beautiful sculptures as well as the small garden makes this little museum feel tranquil in the bustling area around it. The live music was incredible as well!

One of my favorite small museums in the city. Thoughtful, relaxing, and made to be enjoyed in a couple loops (in my opinion). The entire museums is made to be experienced in a thoughtful and peaceful manner, very much reflecting the energy of the art.
Cool museum of mostly sculptures. It takes about an hour and a half to get through. You can do it in less then an hour if you are rushing. There is a small cafe and an outside area to sit and relax. Cost was $10 for adults and $5 for children.
The first time I came to this museum, I was in high school, and I loved sketching the shapes of the many sculptures on display. Today, more than 10 years later, the museum is still a place I'd love to spend hours in sketching. Protocols are
Great museum with beautiful sculpture, and a very interesting open air architecture for parts of it. Has a great set of guides available by the Bloomberg Connects app, and can be seen quickly (under an hour) by walking through at your own
A little Astoria gem. I am honestly a little ashamed I've lived in Astoria 10 years and only JUST went to this museum this year. It is such a beautifully designed space, you are immediately transported when you enter and a feeling of calm
This is a fascinating museum. example of one man’s journey to become the artist inside. we took the tour, and it was amazing to hear his life’s journey. The space and the art in proper context explains a lot about this type of work. More
great museum. love the displays of quality, lovely and fun sculptures. great outdoor space as well. beautiful garden. calming and peaceful with lovely chirping birds. the free admission on Saturday when I went was a nice surprise.
Beautiful, VERY aesthetically well organized museum. Honestly a must-visit for anyone interested in art, sculpture, or design. One note -- the gift shop isn't great for souvenirs, its more of a specialty arts and crafts shop

Been a few times to this awesome museum with a lovely outdoor garden area with seating. Really great spot for a date or an artful, peaceful experience. I would be sure to visit the cute museum shop, too.
Visited with my boyfriend on a cloudy, slightly drizzly day. Upon entering, we were requested to wear face masks but did not carry any with us. Luckily, the staff were able to provide us with a couple.
Probably one of the best things I have done in NYC on this trip. Very cool museum of Noguchi. Worth visiting. 30-60' needed for a whole visit (not more I would say). Simple but great. More
A beautiful tiny museum. No labels, no directions, this is to say. Just look. I like Noguchi’s art but it would be more interesting if there more info about the exhibited pieces. Thanks.
Really cool museum that really shows you how much influence Noguchi has had. The space is really nice and the sculpture garden is very relaxing. Nice gift shop as well.
Noguchi did it again. Both the collection and the space were amazing. I found it very helpful that I’ve learned a bit about the man before visiting. More
Absolutely nice. Such a high level museum in the world. Take the boat (Astoria) to got to, 7 min walking in the queens and here you are.
