One of my rare reviews without any photos. Capturing art is better in person anyway and this museum didn’t fail. As you might have guessed, there’s lots to read in the Printing Museum so come prepared. They have some interactive exhibits that you can walk around but not touch. It’s nice to get that close to history. Later in the museum they talk about how print is influenced through newspaper articles and the evolution of printing devices. You can even read framed revolution war clippings and see how the news was portrayed back then. I would like to state this whole museum is about print and probably won’t be interesting for kids not in grade school yet. I personally enjoyed it alone and spent roughly 2 hours pondering around different exhibits and framed news articles.
This museum is a great treasure in the state of Texas. Whenever you visit Houston this should be a scheduled stop. This nonprofit organization has done so much to further printmaking and it’s history. They have an active role in offering print education to the Houston community and to virtual students. They exhibit print artists at all levels. The staff is amazing and dedicated to building a positive space for artists to grow. They have an amazing artist in residence program that gives artists studio space and time to develop their creative research. It is a wonderful treasure in Houston. I can’t wait for the new facility to be open regularly to the public like it was before.
I recently visited the museum when it hosted the Twelfth Annual Houston Book Fair this past Saturday. I was very impressed by the space and its contents, it was nice to see how written communication has evolved over time from clay tablets to computers today! The real highlight of the museum are the working galleries with vintage equipment demonstrating the crafts of stone lithography, letterpress printing, papermaking, and bookbinding! Watching a linotype cast out entire lines of metal type to eventually form a column was a real treat in the age of the interwebz. Now I know where the term "to write a column" comes from! :)
If you book an appointment do you have a tour make sure you call the day before to make sure the artist has put it on his schedule. Showed up for a tour with my university class today and the artist was out of town. Super unfortunate... The museum itself is really cool some of the displays aren't finished but definitely worth the visit if you're into art and the history of human communication
Seemingly small place from the outside, this museum offers a very in depth and hands on experience of the history of printing. The museum has guided tours (which I recommend) as well as self guided tours. There is a gift shop at the front as well as several galleries for local and resident artists. Definitely a hidden gem in the cities collection of museums!
Super friendly welcoming. Amazing museum with plenty documents to learn about printing. I took a guided tour and heard a lot from the guide. I brought back home the papers I pressed. History of printing with any machines. And also videos about the history of printing (from Lascaux to Gutenberg...) Really worth to go. I will go back soon and many times.
A hidden gem Midtown adjacent, a great place for a Saturday afternoon of getting back to the basics. They have a working printing press and you get to learn all about printmaking. The various studios allow you to see artists at work. In a world where we read our books on Kindles and iPad, this museums shows you what you've been missing.
The owners and artists of this important historical museum are the best! Hosted an event for my design company here and we were treated to an amazing time! The amount of learning possible when just walking around is amazing, but having a knowledgeable tour guide raises the bar! A must for design and art aficionados
This place is incredibly interesting! Our tour guide was full of knowledge and gave us so much interesting information about the history of printing. They even have a replica of the Gutenberg press and let us print a page. Great experience, especially if you're a type nerd.
Fantastic museum! Seriously one of the best l have been to. Take the tour there are lots of hands on exhibits. You get to see the old presses actually work and the techniques the operator uses. Good for chill kids who are curious. I would plan to spend at least 45 mins.
Interesting place. I wasn't aware it existed, but glad that I went. I'd like to go back again, but without my students, so that I could really take in all of the details. It was also under renovation when we went, so a lot of things were out of order. Great guide.
A hidden Houston gem. I was bored one day and decided to go. Admission is free, but if you want a guided tour there is a fee. It's interesting to see the collections, learn about the printed word, and hear the history of printing. Worth a visit.
Wonder filled place. Joined a Girl Scott Group for a tour. Fun to be with youngsters learning something old new. Enjoyed the expertise of Charles Criner, former printer with both the Post and the Chronicle, showing off the various historic
We had a wonderful tour provided by Mike. It was extremely interesting and we all had a great time!

A fantastic museum for a typographer to go check out in the city of Houston. Prices of all generations can be found in this place. If you're a graphic designer or just love typography you have to check this place out.
The collection of printng equipment and printed materials from history was amazing. Inspiring to see pages of Luther's Bible, Tyndales Bible and Geneva Bible on display. Definitely worth the visit.
Really cool place in Houston! Learned a lot about history of printing and the staff was really nice! It’s a great place for kids because they let you print from a real Columbian printing press!
I am in printing business for more than 40 years and this is the first time I visited this place. It was really nice with bunch of old printing equipment. Most of them are older than me!
Interesting place if you like history and it's hands on, no red boundaries everywhere, which is cool. There's also art classes if you're interested. Cheap place to burn an hour or two.
Neat little museum! We enjoyed it and learned a ton.

Une équipe enthousiaste au service de l'impression d'art et de son histoire. Une plongée dans l'époque pas si lointaine des presses et des casses...
Small but interesting.

Absolutely lovely experience, learned a lot about the history of the printed word. Had fun trying to read through the older texts.
A great hidden gem. This is a wonderful museum for people of all ages. The guided tour is well woth the extra money.
Wow this place brings back memories If you are wanting to see how print was done back in the days- go see the museum
Not only did I hear about printing through the years but I was able to print out a page. "Hands on" is so much fun!
Part of the printing museum crawl. Very educational on the role of print media over time.

Definitely worth the trip and plan to take the tour with the staff! Great people and hands-on learning experience
Suprisingly fun. Lots of history. Somewhat more interactive than a traditional museum. Definitely a hidden gem.
Just a great place..besides the friendly folks there..the History of printing is alive in that building.
What a treasure! Part history and part beautiful art with scheduled workshops and classes and events.
Nice small museum, with both permanent and temporary exhibits, as well as events. Nicely done.
We went for an artist market. Really nice little museum and friendly vendors. I will be back
I took my Yearbook students here on a field trip and it was the absolute best experience!
Great place. So many of the presses are restored to working order. It's amazing to see.
I love this museum. They have tours on Saturdays, but you can also explore by yourself.
Great, underrated museum. Get the tour; he makes all the difference in the world.
If you're a printer, this is a mist stop. The history is really well documented.
Didn't think I'd enjoy this. Turned out to be very fun. Hands on. Recommend this
Unless the have the original Gutenberg press from the 1500's I am not interested
Great place to visit and learn about the past and future of printing..
Great place to learn about printing history. Staff was very helpful.
