What a pleasant little establishment with friendly staff, tasty cocktails and atmosphere. As a lone stranger to the land, I found myself walking the streets in search of a bar that looked friendly and atmospheric. On a Friday night, that is a near impossible task, but as luck would have it I was drawn to a cosy bar with a roaring fire - The Rummer. I escaped the rain and sampled a cider brewed in house, which was pleasant. Afterwards, I decided to take a shot at a cocktail and went for a Hot Buttered Rum. What a treat. Served warm, spiced with cinnamon and garnished with grated nutmeg. A hug in a (glass) mug. If it’s a rainy day and you’re looking for something to warm you up and give you a buzz, I can recommend no better. After a while I was invited to chat with the bar staff, who were friendly, helpful and made me feel right at home. Big shout out to Chris and Ben. If you’re looking for a calm drink in a friendly spot, swing on by. I know I will next time I’m in Bristol.

I should start off by saying that The Rummer is a very fine place to have a drink and some very decent cocktails (my primary reason for going there!) They also do some rather special dinner evenings: last year we were privileged to get tickets for their re-creation of the Last First Class meal on the Titanic (!) The effort they put into everything shines clearly, and they are to be applauded for that. Keep it up! The reason I've not given a 5/5 is this: many of their main menu cocktails are rather more 'experimental' than I'd like. This was also true of some of their Titanic variations. Whilst this isn't a great issue, and I would add that the staff are _always_ keen to serve you anything not on the menu too, there's a slight undercurrent of overplaying their hand and I, for one, would like to see a little more quiet confidence in their excellent wares. They're good enough to stand on their own without being showy. If I could, I'd give 4.5 stars, but not quite 5.

The Rummer is one of the best bars in Bristol, hands down. The spirit selection is fantastic, along with the creativity of some of their cocktails making this one of my favourite places to get wavey. Particular mention goes to the smokey Old Fashioned, Negroni, Nitro Zombie and Rum Hot Teddy. What especially gives the Rummer the edge over other bars in the area is the staff and how accommodating they are to your specific tastes, shout out to Martin! With all these tasty drinks, on some weeks my visiting frequency makes me feel as though I am becoming part of the furniture (with an empty wallet), but the prices are in line with other cocktail bars in the area so no complaints. My only gripe is they don't do food anymore, which also used to be some of the best in Bristol. Hopefully they can hire a Chef and start doing Sunday roasts again soon which will mean I may as well move in.

  • Steve Cox

Whilst visiting Bristol on business I Googled 'best Sunday roast in Bristol' and the Rummer came up. I arrived on my own and saw there were lots of empty tables. They wouldn't' take my order for a Sunday Roast because I had no reservation. Most decent establishments at least offer to try and fit you in but this was an unfriendly 'go away, you're not welcome'. I hate places like this. I can recommend you walk 15 paces down the lane to The Crown where I was welcomed, had a very nicely cooked roast beef for half the price I would have paid at The Rummer and there was a proper selection of draught beers (not available at The Bummer). Zero stars would be more appropriate. Avoid unless you are a hipster.

Had the pleasure of a 5 course tasting menu with cocktail flight in the dining room. A little bit unusual in terms of ingredients, but very very good. Drinks flight was epic. Everything from smoke filled hip flasks to something that looked like a chemistry set. Amazing. We were also allowed to have a poke around their new micro distillery, and got a couple of gin tasters. Really inventive and most informative. The whole place has a professional but experimental feel. It's a great mix, and more places should be doing it instead of following the same formulas, producing the same food and same drinks. We will be back again and again, if only to check out what else they are up to.

We had a disastrous evening yesterday At The Rummer Bristol with family and friends. Just because we ask for some(1-2) more pieces of log for the fireplace. !rude and out of manners young man shouted at us saying he is the Owner of the barand tried to kick us out of the bar while we were having our drinks which we payed for already. Remember these kind of commercial places has to obey service rules and should be VERY Careful about politeness and not to cause stressful moments for their customers according to the consumer protection law. NOT recommend this for locals and tourists at all.

  • Sian Creagh-Osborne

Best Cocktail Bar in Bristol by a long way. The Rummer gets the balance right between high quality service which is friendly and not arrogant. They have a huge amount of spirits, especially rum, and their own gin distillery. I had a meal in the dining room where the whole menu, and drinks flights were based on gin and its botanicals. One of the best meals I have had in a long time, especially because it is a brave menu, which is cooked expertly. I would not be surprised if they caught the attention of the michelin star inspectors, but I hope not because it I want to keep it as my own special place.

  • Stefan Dewer

A very high class establishment with an extremely pleasant and knowledgeable staff. An interesting and delicious cocktail menu and as the name would suggest a huge selection of rums from around the world for you to try as you like. This is premium place with premium and hard to find spirits at prices that many would consider high. But with the atmosphere and comfort it is a decent trade off. If you book in advance with a large enough party they will open up their cellar bar, which offers a unique and interesting location for your event. Well worth the visit especially for the rum aficionado.

  • Laura Davis

It's not cheap but the drinks are good and the service is fantastic. Friendly owners who say hello like youre old friends once youve been a few times. Relaxed and dont think Ive ever had to wait more than a couple of minutes to get served (even in the evening when theyre making more cocktails). The fact that we can take the dog is the icing on the cake as when we became dog owners we thought we would be stuck going to old man pubs selling 2 for 1 burgers. A delight to be able to come and relax here with him.

  • gary brimson

Great time on a gin tasting experience. James our host and a distiller was fab throughout the night, naughty but nice. Very knowledgeable and put all at ease. He had an assistant, a young Italian girl, apologies I forget the name, but also very professional. Tasted most of the find and they do have a good selection, as well as limited editions. Turbo Island Gin is a must, named after a well known popular evening and weekend entertainment area. Will definitely be back when next in Bristol.

  • Melanie Duncalf

Finally tried this bar after hearing good things for a while. Great friday night atmosphere if you want something a little more relaxed. Found a comfy sofa next to the fire to drink a delicious gin fizz. Buzzing without being overpowering and we could actually hear each other. Always a bonus! Would definitely go back. Staff were relaxed, appropratly attentive and fun! My drink choice was a recommendation and they absolutely nailed it. I wondered what they'll recommend next time..?

  • jen cheshire

Terrible experience. After booking the whole cellar several months ago with Brett the owner for a private party of 15 -20 ladies (my daughters hen party) with cocktail making, a meal and dancing the rumner took a large deposit to secure our booking. They emailed to cancel our reservation 24 hours before the event having changed their minds. Seriously wouldn't trust them with any important occasions ..other venues do good food but are reliable!

  • Daniel Izzard

A wall of some of the best spirits money can buy and some that you probably won't fins anywhere else in Bristol. Not cheap, but not as expensive as you may think for somewhere that gives you your change atop a silver plate... The real pleasure in going to the rummer is not only the selection of drinks but the level of service offered, with the staff having an excellent knowledge of mixology and able to suggest drinks based on your taste.

  • Leslie Clayton

The finest establishment in Bristol. Fantastic array of quality and unusual spirits. Excellent cocktails accompanying a brilliant choice of bottle beers, ciders and lagers. No draught ales, fully understand the reasons. Brett and his team are deeply concerned about service, conform and quality. As for the food offering, you'll never be disappointed, always something to make your mouth water. The whole package screams QUALITY....

  • Robin CM

Surely one of the best Sunday roasts in Bristol? And consistently good over a few years too. I would recommend booking as although we were the only people there when we arrived at 1:30 it soon filled up and there were several big groups as well as tables of two. Staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. I really must go there for drinks sometime and sample some of the rums... oh and the tasting menu always sounds good too...

  • Tony Reeves

Superb 7 course tasting menu that became 11 courses as the chef kept producing more delicious food! Every course had delightful little touches, from fermented year old garlic to the chefs flavouring their own sea salt. For £44 it was excellent value as each dish was a full plate! Service was superb, friendly, polite, knowledgeable and discreet. If you want a quiet and tasty venue in Bristol then this should be tried!

  • Martin Grigg

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here. It has a very relaxed atmosphere and a great little selection of mocktails and non-alcoholic beer, which the nice gentleman at the bar was very knowledgable about (the Powderkeg beer is absolutely lovely!) The glasses were chilled so that they appeared completely opaque until they had warmed a little, which was a nice touch. I look forward to going back when I next visit Bristol.

  • Chris Wilkinson

Excellent. Went in for a couple of cocktails and stayed for food, as the drinks were spot on. Food menu married some interesting flavors, which provided a memorable experience (Venison and Vanilla combo was particularly inspired). Service was relaxed but efficient, and the decor was dominated by the best stocked bar I have ever seen. A must visit if you can find it (Hint: it's down a small lane off Corn Street)

  • Lukas L

Booked table by the fireplace by the email and even though the place was closed at the time when I was making a reservation I have received a reply instantly. The place is full of character with nice decor and absolutely amazing fireplace and beautiful sofas. Service 10/10 and very polite and welcoming. Highly recommend and I am sure I’ll be coming back there.

What happened to this place. It use to have a touch of class. The music playing these days is garage rock. The people behind the bar are wearing shorts. There is a constant beep from an alarm by the door. The last time I was here there was a touch of class. Clearly there target audience has changed. Nothing classy left at all. After previous visits this one left me very disappointed

  • Jermaine Reynolds

Although overall a good dining experience with nice surroundings, I have been left disappointed by the churlish response by the owner to a previous review (Mr Cox). The sort of self congratulatory smugness in your response does nothing for you as a company other than show your true colours as an individual. Business is not personal, nor are reviews so don't take them as such.

  • marktristan

1) Delicious food. Not just "food" but foodie-style food. Spend-£40-and-don't-regret-it food. 2) Also, bar snacks. More affordable and also good 3) Cracking cocktails! I posted a pic of an East Indies (with tennis-ball sized ice). Refined but also decadent 4) Cosy nooks. Nice leather sofas. Fireplace. 5) When you find it (hint: alleyway), you feel like a winner already.

  • Davidoff Williams

No good. Bar too slow. Queueing at the bar because cocktails are being prepared. Went in, waited at the end of a ridiculous queue for the bar for 5 minutes, thought 'why am I queuing for a drink in a place characterised by the length of its bar queue', turned round and we all left. Lack of atmosphere. Waste of time.

I visited the rummer on valentines night. What a great ambiance around the fireplace- perfect setting whilst sipping one of the many drinks on offer. We then proceeded to the dining room to eat our 5 course gin infused meals. The food was disappointing in general- tough jelly and panacota and harsh gin infused tastes. We still had a lovely night though.

  • Sara

Great evening after booking the gin tasting session at The Rummer. Some great gins to sample which kept flowing. They are very enthusiastic about their gin's which is great to see and very knowlegeable. Some very interesting combinations which kept on flowing. They also provide non alcoholic gins (not own brand) for the non drinkers. A great evening.

  • Robert Franklin

Some of the worst staff I have ever interacted with in a bar/restaurant and the offerings were overpriced and average. There are much better options in Bristol. Edit: As everyone can see from the responses by the owner, these aren't the kind of people you want to give your money to. Owner - Maybe there's some professional help out there for you?

  • BUMBERCLERK

Visited the Rummer Hotel pub while passing through the St. Nicholas Market late in the afternoon. Found a great green Chesterfield armchair near the giant fireplace & enjoyed a double house white rum and coke, very smooth indeed, cant remember where it was from. Really huge fireplace. The ambience was absolutely fantastic. So much Rum!

  • Storm E Knight

Lovely building, full of history, well made drinks and friendly staff. Was shocked to find a baby on the table next to us at 9:30pm on a Saturday night though. Many pubs are family friendly (which I have thoughts on) but I don't think it's too much to expect a venue to be child free by 9:30pm on a Saturday night.

  • Matthew Wood

Lovely fire but otherwise terrible ambience... sort out the harsh lighting, smell and really rude bar staff. This place was great a few years ago for Sunday Roast now run by clueless people who should listen to honest feedback to improve their business, especially when there are so many good bars nearby.

  • Renata Hanko

Lovely Bristol bar with great service. We went there for a little Christmas gathering and we got to sit next to the magnificent fireplace, which was lovely. The service was great, the bar tenders are really lovely and the drinks were nice as well. Definitely recommend for a great Christmas outing.

  • Chou Wanphoo

We had a wonderful Sunday roast yesterday. The starter of Croquettas was a good choice on a warm day, and we both ordered the pork main which was beautifully soft, and the crackling was very crispy. Gravy was rich and the roast potatoes were crunchy. Didnt have room for dessert. Well done guys

  • Michael Davenport

I attended a wedding reception at the Rummer Hotel and was blown away by the selection of whisky available behind the bar - lots to choose from in terms of taste and price points. The service was good with staff cheerful and helpful. I didn't stay in the hotel so can't advise on the rooms.

  • Jon Tan

Superb cocktails and table service. A haven on busy Bristol weekends with super comfy seats and a roaring fire. I've only eaten here once, and I thought it expensive but pretty good. It's a great place to while away a few hours in a quiet weekday, or go for a quiet, intimate night out.

  • Jeff Meddemmen

Really enjoyed the cocktail I had here with friends next to the open fire. My friend thought the service was a bit pretentious as our waiter went into a lot of detail about the blends and cocktail variants. I thought he was very knowledgeable and helpful so suppose depends on your take

  • Jon

An absolutely amazing collection of spirits with staff who are happy to help guide you. It's a lot more inviting than Bristol's other comparable bars. Like a speakeasy but without the nonsense of unmarked doors and pretentious staff. Have had dinner here also, which was great too!

  • Rebecca Noakes

It was a busy Friday night at the St Nick's Night Market, but me and my friend wanted a quieter catch up. The Rummer was perfect. Delicious cocktails, comfy couch, an open fire and although we were the last ones in there - we weren't hurried at all. Excellent customer service.

  • sarah creagh

My sister had to take this “business” to court to recover money they owed following an event. She won. They then made fake profiles in her name with her photos to give themselves 5 stars, there is one below. You can detect the whiff of madness in their replies to bad reviews.

  • N “NF3”

Even if you're the grumpyest of people the staff here will always surprise you with their amazing customer service. Genuine character to the place. What they dont have isn't worth drinking. Shout out to David, if that man doesn't make you smile then nothing will!

  • Lucy Bowmore (ByLuceeBow)

Just the best service and drinks you can hope for. But it isn't cheap but when you get best I don't mind paying a little extra. It is relaxed and intimate but you can go there on your own or with ten people and still get the same smile. Please try it out!

  • Russell Brown

For a place called The Rummer, I think I counted only two rum cocktails! However the one I had (Port of Bristol) was great and their selection of rum for either a cuba libre or shorts was really good. Probably more notable as a gin place

  • Rebecca Johnson

I adore this place. A secret hidden gem, tucked in the St Nicholas Market alleyways. Wonderful cocktails in a super relaxed atmosphere lounging on sofas in front of the most incredible fireplace.

Fantastic range of rums, gins and other spirits. Original twists on proper, grown-up cocktails made by bartenders who clearly know their stuff. Get a seat by the large open fire for maximum cosiness - a little bit draughty elsewhere.

  • Charles Shepherd

Did the gin tasting. It was amazing! Staff know there stuff and there's is a nice selection of gins. Once you are back down in the bar area, sitting by the open fire is a must. Amazing atmosphere, will definitely be back again.

  • Kez Murphy

Lovely pub tucked away from it all. Went on a cold night with folks and the service was exceptional... lovely log fire, cozy atmosphere and awesome staff who were welcoming and entertaining. Will definitelybe back!

  • Michael Gibson

Ruined a friend's wedding celebrations then created a fake account using her name and pictures to sing their own praises! Despicable behaviour worthy of those Britain First/EDL morons. You make a mistake, admit it.

Popped here for a cocktail which was delicious, the staff were really nice, everything was clean and atmosphere was good. It’s not a pretentious cocktail bar but instead a bar that happens to serve great drinks.

  • Jack Holmes

Glad to see this place open again. Dropped in after dinner for a cocktail. Very attentive staff, hand sanitizer on every table. They’re taking the social distancing seriously and as always serve great cocktails.

  • John O'Donovan

Terrible. Told there would be a table free in 30 mins by a waiter so had a bottle of wine. He lied and there was no table. The manager is rude and they charge 20p on all card charges which is anachronistic

  • Chris Doyle

My favourite place in Bristol. Great cocktail menu and really nice food. Service can be slow at times but the staff are very good, helpful and friendly. I strongly recommend their Zombie, its fantastic.

By far the best sunday roast I have ever had the pleasure to eat. Lovely atmosphere and good beer too. The beetroot pie was really something special along with the smoke cauliflower and cheese side.
