Tucked away inside a quaint, european-style courtyard, Timgad Cafe can be a little difficult to locate. All the signs pointing to it make it seem like the cafe is inside a food court which, obviously, doesn't bode well for good coffee. Fortunately, this isn't the case. The coffee shop is beneath the courtyard and has some nice outdoor seating, though I think it's probably shaded most of the time, so it wouldn't be great for chilly days. The shop itself is a little small and, depending on when you go, can be a little cramped. The seating mingles with the line to order which makes the whole atmosphere a little claustrophobic and chaotic. However, that sort of plays into the charm of this place. It has the low-keyness and simplicity of a small-town coffee shop, right in the heart of Washington D.C. I ordered a medium roast and the genoa sandwich. The coffee was good, nothing to write home about, but the sandwich was absolutely phenomenal. Made on the spot, and to order, it came out hot just a couple minutes after we had sat down. The people I went with said their lattes were delicious. I'll also mention that the staff was very kind. It's the kind of people that you would expect at a coffee shop in some hipster, small town, but wonderfully refreshing in a big city. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this place if you're looking for something off the beaten path, unique and delicious.

I was looking for a bit to eat for lunch after the August 2023 DC Bookfest. After buying 6 books for a lil' over $30 (quite the deal), I decided to check out this restaurant. I looked at the Google reviews and liked their sandwiches . So I got two different ones: turkey and caprese. I wasn't a fan of the caprese (I hate pesto) but didn't know it was on the sandwich. The turkey sandwich was good. I'd buy it again . I also bought a few snacks (chips to go with my sandwich, snack bar for eating another time) and the drink. Overall, next time I come to Book Fest I'll purchase food here. I feel like I got a lot for the money I spent - $30ish.

Vegetarian options
There are many options for vegetarians. If you want to customize your sandwich to be meat-free you probably can, just request it and see if they can honor it.
Kid-friendliness
There are many sandwiches, snacks, fruit drinks, and other assorted items kids would like.
Wheelchair accessibility
The restaurant is located in the plaza off the Federal Triangle metro stop , which is wheelchair accessible. The entrance of the restaurant is also wheelchair accessible.

Nice coffee shop in a surprising location: off of an open air, below ground level atrium next to the Ronald Reagan building. Rounded up from 3.5 stars to 4 for the location. Good selection of sandwiches. A few pastries, but may have been more earlier in day. Some packaged salads and a couple of soups on the menu. Small set of high quality bagged teas. I didn't try their chai which was a bad powder I think. 8-10 tables, plus 2 small bars, and half dozen more tables outside. A couple of power outlets. Local art on walls plus a board with quotations. Reggae on the sound system at low volume. I was there from 1130 to 200pm on a Thursday: lots of traffic around noon, but past 1245 there were free tables. Free wi-fi with password. (I was here in afternoon on 12May16 - just typed in these notes.)

The atmosphere is really cozy and comfy. The coffee is really amazing if won't get taste like that anywhere. The staff were also friendly and attentive. I would really like to recommend this cafe to you. The food was also delicious and service was great.

I stopped in yesterday morning with a colleague for a working coffee meeting. I was really thrown off by the rudeness of the person who took our order. She never smiled, was impatient, and spoke disrespectfully. This individual has been at this cafe since before the pandemic and I do not recall her being so unpleasant, especially to my colleague who was visiting the cafe for the first time. I felt bad at my colleague’s treatment. I enjoyed my visits here in the past and was pleased that it had reopened. Now, I’m not so keen as I was before. I’m inclined to support nearby alternatives.

Wonderful cafe serving hand crafted drinks using locally-roasted Compass Coffee. This is a true coffee bar for true coffee aficionados. (Example: if you order a Macchiato, you will get a real macchiato, not some super sweetened syrupy concoction that the other guys have tricked half of America into believing is a macchiato.) They are on point here! Their baristas and staff are super friendly, quick, and helpful. They also serve some pretty tasty sandwiches, wraps, and snacks. Breakfast food is available all day - if a menu item is not out and ready (always fresh), they will make it for you. Just ask. All in all, you can't go wrong with this place.

Food great but the owner and the service there is terrible it’s three guys who were standing there as I was waiting to order it took almost 10 minutes before anyone came to place my order and it wasn’t busy…I tried stating my little concern to the guy miloud but he kinda brushed it off and talked in a demeanor that is for lack of better words Stoney very uninterested in what I had to say and his body language showed it 1 out of 10

Great looking food and amazing coffee.I got the best dirty chai tea latte I have ever had here. Service was relatively quick and very friendly. They have inside and outside seating. The Timgad Cafe is small, so seating is limited in both cases. The Timgad Cafe is located in the lower plaza of the Reagan Building. It's right next to the metro and open late enough that you can watch the crowds while avoiding the worst of the evening rush. 2019 Timgad redux - Back a year later and still one of my favorite spots to duck into while headed to the metro! Creamy chai tea latte heaven and great service too.

I ordered via postmakes, so I did not set foot on the restaurant. I ordered a few egg and bacon breakfast sandwiches and got them, literally. Their breakfast sandwiches are served on regular, store brand bread. Barely toasted. The eggs were overcooked, badly. And the bacon was ultra thin. There was nothing else, which I was surprised by, because breakfast sandwiches typically come with cheese at least. Each sandwich also cost $3, so it seems steep to charge another dollar just to add cheese, which I kind of expected to be on there anyway. All in all, a disappointing experience.

At first the cafe was hard to find but once we rounded the Smithsonian there were signs to lead us there. It’s a cute place that’s tucked away, almost underground. Ordering was pretty easy but there weren’t any suggestions or small talk involved. We ordered two coffees and a blueberry muffin. We received the coffees, that were slightly warmer than room temperature. We asked about the muffin and were told that we could get it ourselves, which we had no idea since we weren’t told that information. The flavor of the drinks were good, but the service is a bit lackluster.

When I visited this coffee shop at first I was about 15% skeptical about the quality of the coffee and the shop itself but it went above and a bit beyond my expectations for the shop. The atmosphere is very relaxing, the customers are loyal and outspoken. The manager was very friendly and answered all of my questions with excellent precision. If you are planning to visit the DC mall area and you enjoy or want an excellent cup of coffee look no further than the federal triangle metro stop because this one is well above the average shop.

  • Christine R

Strong, delicious coffee and muffins to die for...the interior has a pan African feel that is wonderful. I always feel like I'm traveling while I'm at Timgad. Proverbs on the wall, coffee art, African cloth adorning the tables. I'm glad to see they made it through covid. I make it a point to stop by whenever I'm in the area. They used to have a reward punch card. If they still do, get one. It's worth it. Is a 1 minute walk from Federal Triangle Metro.

Stopped here during at day at the Museum of American History. The barista was fast and attentive. I had a delicious mocha in no time at all, and she offered me a plate and utensils for my coffee cake as soon as I went to sit down. There was comfortable indoor and outdoor seating, plus upbeat music! Highly recommend if you're looking for caffeine, snacks, and respite in an otherwise overwhelming area.

Terrible experience the owner is very arrogant and the things he says out his mouth is nasty and just the other day I witnessed him yelling at some young guy with glasses and he was just tearing into that guy towering over him and pointing in his face VERY VERY UNPROFESSIONAL

Timgad Cafe is a local coffee shop with a limited food and pastry offering. They serve Compass coffee (a DC chain) and the pastries and food are in house. The prices are reasonable and the croissant was tasty. There is plenty of seating and the chill vibe is nice. Not a bad stop for coffee, an informal meeting or to work/study.

  • Tom Power

Small, simple café serving good hot coffee with a smile. A few toasted baguettes, soup and muffins/croissants on offer, which were nicely prepared. Some nice décor touches and music with a sub-Sahara theme. I was here when it was closing and the lady offered everyone free coffee to take home, which was a nice thought.

  • Amanda C.

This place was delicious! Small cozy atmosphere with outside seating as well. I had a roast beef sandwich (phenomenal), and a Timgad espresso with dulce de leche (very good!). Highly recommend if you are looking for a quick bite and good coffee.

I can't begin to say how amazing this place is. Breakfast sandwiches, Hot chai tea, and all of their coffee is top notch. I highly recommend this coffee shop to anyone if you are in the area. If you are not in the area go to DC just for this place. A++++++++ keep doing what you guys are doing!!!

Saw this place on a visit to D.C. and was super impressed! I got a strawberry smoothie, which was absolutely delicious. Everything tastes fresh and amazing. The store itself has a great environment and is clean. It even has free printing! Very much enjoyed my stop here.

Timgad Cafe is great coffee spot that passerby should checkout before trotting through Washington DC. The barista (see picture) who made my coffee was friendly and professional. He crafted a beautiful white chocolate latte that tasted as great as it looked and smelled.

I have had many sandwiches, but this place is one of the best. We ordered 2 Parmas and 2 Genoas and they were both excellent. We also ordered coffee and a couple pastries that were equally delicious. Definitely recommended if you are in the area.

  • Lydia Nderitu

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this coffee shop. The center pieces are a nice touch. My coconut latte was excellent! And best of all was the energetic service provided. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and visit again!

  • David Vargas Lowy

Second visit in two days. First time, couldn’t get a sandwich because they were ‘out of veggies’. Today, came at 3:30, ordered a coffee and was told ‘we’re closed because it’s too slow’. Their posted closing time is 4 PM! Won’t be a third!

  • Sam D

Great coffee shop! Just what we were looking for! An uncrowded spot for a good local cup of coffee. They have some pastries that are good also. Small spot located on a lower level and hidden away from the hustle and bustle. Awesome lattes

It was absolutely throwing it down in DC, we were soaked head to foot after seeing the monument and memorial, and headed here for some shelter and to dry our feet (outside, we're not monsters). The people that work here are so nice.

A nice little place tucked away from the streets. I love the plants on the tables and the friendliness of the employees. The coffee was decent but could use a little more training from the staff to encourage trying new combinations.
