I held off on writing this review because I really wanted to give the salon a chance to be better. But they didn't, so here we go. After getting 2 great haircuts, I went into the salon in November 2021 to get a blue color in a balayage. My hair is naturally black but it was already bleached from a previous balayage. The only thing I told the stylist I didn’t want was for my hair to look like it normally does (super dark and black). I wanted there to be a noticeable  difference so it didn’t look like I did nothing to my hair. Long story short, my hair turned out exactly how I didn’t want it: black, exactly the same as it was before. I was visibly upset and expressed my disappointment with the job, especially because it felt like they were rushing me out of the salon so they could get on to their next client. I paid close to $400 for my hair to just look black and almost exactly what it looked like on a regular basis. While I understand that, at salons you pay for a stylist's time, when a customer is clearly very unhappy with the results, in my opinion, I should have been offered some kind of discount either at that point or offered to have me come back again so they could fix it free of charge. I swallowed my disappointment and paid because the stylist, Ebony, usually does a great job cutting my hair and I didn’t want to burn that bridge. A couple weeks go by and my hair starts turning green as the “blue” fades out of my hair. Totally fine, I expected this to happen so I made an appointment to go get it done before NYE. The stylist canceled the appointment last minute. I made a second appointment to go in early January. This appointment is also canceled the same morning of the appointment. I tried calling on 1/22/2022 to try to make an appointment again  was told that I would receive a call back by the end of the day with options. I did not receive that call. I get a call back the next day and I am offered 2 times that don’t work for me and then told that the next available time is not until the middle of March. I think my biggest disappointment is in the salon's customer service. Given that the salon had canceled on me twice, I had hoped that they would make an effort to prioritize making time available since it is now on them to accommodate me. I am even more disappointed that this lack of respect and professionalism appears to stem from the fact that I look young, dress on the casual side, and thus I don't think I fall into their typical clientele. Despite the great haircuts I received at the salon, everything else I have tried to do has not been great in both hair results and customer service.  I will now move on to another salon that will better respect my time and value my money. Just an overall disappointing experience despite the first 2 haircuts.

Nov 2019: Union Beauty was great! Great vibes and Cassie was a fantastic hairstylist. She really listened to what I wanted, gave excellent consultation on what would work for my hair and what my options could include. Then, after the cut, when it didn't look quite how I imagined, she redid the whole cut so that it would! I love the haircut I walked out with. She went above and beyond and was incredibly friendly and fun on top of all that. Highly recommend! UPDATE: I returned to Union Beauty today and was overjoyed to have Cassie work her magic again. I left Union Beauty with another fantastic haircut and I was so grateful for the attention, care and talent that Cassie brought to the cut. She really understands and designs a haircut with texture, style and maintenance in mind. The COVID precautions were thoughtful and reasonable — I was glad to feel like the stylists, staff and customers are all protected throughout the session. Highly highly recommend!

I have been going here off and on for years, have always had an OK experience. I recently went in for a $75 gloss, and during the gloss the woman doing my hair mentioned I could use an inch trim to get rid of my split ends. I said sure and she cut my hair for 5 minutes or so. When it came time to pay, my total was over $200 (with a 20% tip it was $240). I spoke to the manager the next day and she fully agreed that I should have been informed that I would be charged a full $125 fee for a haircut in order for her to trim that one inch off the bottom. She then called back and said that my person "cuts hair quickly" and all they were willing to offer me more of a haircut but that was it. Well, not a very good solution considering I didn't want a haircut in the first place! Very disappointed in how this was all handled. Will not be returning to Union Beauty.

I have been getting my hair done by Laurie for about 3 years and she is one of the best stylists I've ever had work on my hair. She is very talented and professional--amazing with dimensional color and can either stick with the same thing or suggest something new that turns out well (I've been sticking with the most recent "something new" for a while now since I like it so much). She is also friendly and down to earth so easy to have a conversation with. The salon space is not too big, not too small, has a very chill atmosphere that is both welcoming and fun. I'm sensitive to noise, and they seem to control the noise level better than most salons despite the interior being mostly hard surfaces. It's not a quiet space but the balance between music volume, voice level, and hair dryer is very well managed.

I’ve gotten my hair done before numerous times by different stylists from around NY. After all my treatments I usually leave with minimal satisfaction. I was booked with Russel At Union Beauty and could not have been happier. Russel took the time to sit down with me and discuss what I wanted to do. He showed pictures and reviewed step by step what we were going to do. Really took the time to give my hair the love and care it so desperately needed after not being touched for several months due to Covid. After my time with Russel I can say I left that salon with my head held high and feeling like a millions bucks. Words cannot express how satisfied I was with my cut and color. You will not regret coming here. Do yourself a favor and make an appointment!! Everything is also Covid safe and clean.

I've been to Union Beauty several times and have had a great experience every time. Sometimes getting a haircut feels like taking a trust fall, and I've always felt very safe with Angela. I had my hair highlighted for the first time with Angela and the results were beautiful. It looked so natural and flattering. It was truly artful. Most recently, I came in for a consultation after receiving a haircut I didn't feel great about at another salon. Angela quickly diagnosed what felt "off" about the cut while assuring me that it wasn't anything drastic or unfixable. She was able to squeeze in a quick cut where she blended everything out, and then I received a wonderful shampoo. Today my hair looks and feels so much better! Thank you!

Russell is wonderful. My full head of blonde highlights came out great. It’s always a bit scary trying a new colorist. Over the years I’ve gone to some of nyc’s best-known-for-blondes stylists. So, making a switch meant doing my homework. After reading lots of bios and reviews for Brooklyn based colorists I chose Russell based on his depth of experience. At my first appointment he listened carefully to my ideas about my hair and offered his ideas making sure we understood eachother. He’s a master, intelligent and warm. He also brought my hair back to life with a great cut that was long overdue after having postponed getting my hair done during Covid. I’m so glad I found this little gem of a salon and Russell.

I haven't been happy with my haircuts for a whiled wanted to change salons/stylists, so I read like a million reviews and settled on Russell at Union. All the compliments and raves that had been written about him were 100% true. I felt like he really cared about me, looked at me as an individual, heard what I had to say and understood my confusion about what I actually needed, and taught me so much about how to care for my hair! I am like an ignorant 10 year old boy (I am actually a 68 year old woman lol) when it comes to making my hair look good and now I feel armed with tricks, tools, and products to use on my own plus a GREAT haircut that was just what I wanted. From entering the salon, the experience was warm and welcoming -- which was awesome, since it was freezing outside! I had neglected getting a haircut for a while, so we had a lot to work with. Cassie gave me a great style, removing about 4 inches and adding back some much-needed shape. I am very pleased with the length, and know my hair well enough to know already that this is a great cut. I will be back in two weeks for color and will be booking Cassie to also cut my teens hair.

First time customer - The booking process was easy and my appointment was on time. The staff (in general) were very friendly, attentive and professional. Diane is fantastic! Personable and obviously very skilled. She asked me about my hair before we started the process (which was very much appreciated). I felt confident that she understood the look I was looking to achieve and she totally delivered on it! My hair is the actual length we discussed and the layers compliment my naturally wavy hair (so I can wear it styled or natural). I received a compliment almost immediately after I left the salon. Really safe, clean, great experience. I will be back for sure!

I came here last minute today to have my hair cut and blown out because I was fed up with my hair needing a refresh. Ebony was my stylist and so sweet and fun the whole time she made the time fly by. She really took the time to learn about my hair and the way I do things to it. I have bangs so it is always scary to have someone new touch them but they look perfect. She followed my reference photos great :) I will for sure be back here. I also like how the salon is still very Covid safe so bring a mask and your vax card. They ask you to wash your hands upon arrival too. Not a bad thing because the flu is going around too

I had such a great time getting my hair done by Laurie and chatting with her and David! Laurie listened to what I was looking for and took her time to make sure I was happy with everything. I have seen a LOT of stylists, and this is one of the best experiences I’ve had in the city. My hair is curly which means it requires extra attention and skill, and Laurie did an amazing job. AND it’s so much more affordable than most places! Don’t be fooled by the prices! The quality of the service and care for the client is top notch. I am very grateful for Laurie, and I’m excited to be back again when I can!

Union Beauty is simply a wonderful salon. It’s a safe, well run, calming sanctuary, with top notch service and thoughtful COVID-19 protocols which the staff is vigilant about practicing. This review is long overdue as I have been a long time client of union beauty. I love coming here to get my hair done- everyone who works here is lovely and kind! I booked an appointment with Ebony by chance (maybe three years ago at this point?) and she has been doing my hair ever since. Beyond being a magician with scissors and a chemist who can concoct the perfect shade of blonde- Ebony is one of the most thoughtful and warm people I have ever met. She always listens intently to my hair asks and makes me feel like a priority. I love being her client and love love love my hair!

Everything about my visit to Union Beauty today was wonderful. The space is clean and my temperature was taken as soon as I arrived. My belongings were put into plastic bags and I was immediately asked to wash my hands upon arrival. In addition, I was directed to move about the space in a way that maximized social distancing. Angela listened to my request and gave me the perfect haircut. She made my requested haircut even better than I thought it would be! I’m in live with my new look and looking forward to showing it off starting tomorrow!

Small, cozy salon with expert staff and a warm and welcoming environment. I have visited three different stylists (due to scheduling issues and one who left), and all are great with my very thick straight hair. I’ll be sticking with Laurie from now on! Bonus points for great music. I’m usually there for about three hours for full color and cut, but it’s always a pleasant time. I also really like the Eufora products (they don’t push them unless you’re interested) and the points system where you earn free stuff.

Diane does incredible work!! And she's a lovely person to hang with. I hadn't had much experience with coloring aside from a few rounds of highlights years ago. She explained the process in detail to me and offered her opinion on what she thought would look best. We decided on a blonde balyage (from light brown hair) and a bob cut. Russel is the absolute best. He’s great with curls and never leaves my hair feeling damaged despite doing transformative color every time. He also understands products and has given me great advice on how to use my products at home. After our first appointment I bought a few products from the salon and reassessed my home routine. When I returned a few months later he said he saw a noticeable difference in my hair texture. I always look forward to my appointments with Russel. Highly recommend!!

Laurie is an artist - she gave me the best haircut of my life. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she made it come out even better than what I had imagined. She gave me gorgeous color, and spent literally hours getting it just right. This salon is spotlessly clean and they were more careful and conscientious about observing proper hygiene and safety measures than any establishment I’ve been inside during the pandemic. I can’t imagine going anywhere else now to get my hair done.

Amazing salon. I walked in here on a Saturday almost when they closed, and Russell gave me the best color correction service ever. The salon is chill, everyone is friendly, the atmosphere is great and I felt listened to and taken care of. I came in with fried purple hair wanting to go back to my brunette roots. Russel knocked others out of the park and I left feeling great ! I’d recommend this salon to anyone! I know he’s made a lifelong client out of me for sure.

Russel is great! We are so lucky to have him here at the East Cost now. With all his experience and amazing technique he turned my hair the perfect icy blonde I’ve always dreamed of. It’s a joy going to this salon. Everyone here is so professional and friendly and I always get compliments on my cut and color. I’ve been seeing Angela since before she opened the salon and would never consider trusting my hair with anyone else. She’s excellent at providing suggestions while listening to what you want. The COVID precautions definitely put me at ease. The salon is never crowded, impeccably clean and masks are always worn.

I loved my appointment with Cassie! She sat down to discuss how I would like my hair to be cut and colored and gave me different options before we began. I went to Mark on a whim because I had my hair colored by another salon and the streaks were too much for me. Mark was available, and as soon as I sat down, I felt well cared for. He fully understood why I wanted a darker look and listened. I came out of the salon feeling so beautiful and happy that I had found this gem of a shop right in my neighborhood instead of having to trek into Manhattan during Covid. Mark is amazing.

Diane at Union Beauty was fantastic. I hadn't had a haircut in over a year and yikes it was so long and lanky. I almost cried tears of joy when she was finished. I LOVE the cut (10 inches!), it's now a super cute lob and the bangs are perfect. Diane was so warm and pleasant throughout. Also, I was very impressed with the covid precautions. Better than my doctor's appt I had later that day honestly! Felt very safe.

I was making a big change from long, past-the-shoulders hair to chin-length bob, and Diane was awesome. I have curly hair around 3A - 3C and Laurie has been such a phenomenal stylist for me. I usually go with Aveda and have tried Devachan but Union Beauty has provided the best experience thus far—plus I’m supporting an independent, women-owned store! I highly recommend this wonderful salon.

Do not make an appointment with them if you have a birthday or important event they cancelled after confirming my appointment and left me no time to book another stylist or offer another time that worked for me, horrible business practice so disrespectful inconsiderate and selfish!

Went to Union Beauty Salon for the first time this week and got a great haircut from Ebony. I really like this small, charming, unpretentious, and friendly salon and intend to keep going there. I'm so glad to have discovered it!
