We often pass through Sutherland on our way down the coast for a surf and also have a few friends in Jannali. On this particular occasion, we were here to try out the revamp of the Jannali Inn, which is now the Union Place Hotel, with a set of apartments above. Not far from the train station and right amidst the hub of shops and residential area in Jannali. We would describe the Union Place Hotel as a boutique style pub or bistro, featuring a modern bar and dining area styled with exposed brick, brass elements, wooden booths and artwork adorning the walls. Reminiscent of a venue in Chicago, the theme they are aiming to emulate. There’s also sports bar facilities and an alfresco space with bright white tiling, greenery and white umbrellas. The outdoor area is perfect on a sunny day and also a great space to have a little get-together. We’d recommend sitting outside in the sunshine with a drink in hand. Perhaps a Pimm's which is on tap, it comes served with lemonade, ginger ale, lime, cucumber, strawberry, orange and mint. If you’re just here for drinks, their cocktail list is great. We loved the “Aperol Gin sour” with Aperol, gin, agave and lemon, topped with rosewater petals and was a sweet and refreshing drink. They also have some specials, perfect for summer, such as the watermelon caprioska or a passionfruit white chocolate martini or even blood orange and ginger white sangria. On the regular list, our ever favourite espresso martini makes an appearance. The hotel also has a cocktail happy hour from 7-9pm Thursday-Sunday (members only) where cocktails are only $10 ($18 at full price). We do recommend visiting for a meal too. The Union Place Hotel serves up some high quality bistro food. The house baked focaccia a great place to start, a round focaccia which is topped with cherry tomatoes, black olives and vincotto and served in the pan it is cooked in. The bread is thick and super fresh and a perfect start to your lunch. It is also vegan friendly. We were super keen for the 500g Bistecca 500G Fiorentina Nolan T-Bone (from Gympie QLD Tender-Stretched) and as such could only fit in a few salads with it. The meat came served with the T-Bone and sliced into small pieces with a delicious red wine sauce. A quality piece of meat that was great to share between the two. It came served with a few super crunchy rosemary potatoes and watercress. To accompany, a side of green beans which were topped with a tomato based sauce and black olives (vegan and gluten free). There are also a range of healthy salads. The tuna panzanella ruby salad was very enjoyable. The salad super fresh, made up of; truss tomato, cucumber, croutons, red onion, basil, capers, red wine vinaigrette. The menu features a range of steaks, burgers, pastas/risottos and schnitzels as well as their pizzas. In keeping to theme, they have a "Godfather" sandwich and pizzas, especially their 18 inch pizza, which is about the biggest pizza we’ve seen come out of a pub kitchen, it looked incredible. This would be perfect to order for a party. On the day of our visit, there was also a chef’s specials menu there was a squid ink risotto, sesame and sage crusted pork cutlet or a slow-cooked lamb shoulder and potato pizza. In addition, there were some vegan options; the fried cauliflower and sweet potato salad or an oven-baked red pepper. We thoroughly recommend this venue for an amazing meal, drink in hand and catching up with a few friends. We’d love it if we had a local pub as good as this one.
Only opened a few months ago, the old pub was demolished, a new hotel built (with lots of apartments above it). About 200m from the station and just around the corner to the main Street. Lots of street parking, but during the weekday it's all filled with commuters from the station. Night and weekends are better. New hotel, new menu, and the menu is good. We had 2 different schnitzels, both large sized, well cooked, home-made sauces and gravy, boiled potatoes and buttered green beans instead of chips, a nice change and good servings. Staff are on the ball, fast and attentive but not in your face. They know the menu and what's good on a given day. There is a kids menu. Outdoor seating in the sun or under cover, indoor with booths (6 people) or tables (4), ramps everywhere inside with handrails, so plenty of places to suite every one. 5 specials per day, plus the menu gives you a choice of ~35 dishes from salads upwards. Because it's built as a hotel, everything you want to drink is ready to hand. Probably seats 200+, with lots of space, so you'll definitively not feel cramped. I can see this being really popular on weekends in summer. It's still finding its feet customer wise, as the old pub was a bit of a dive, this one is completely new and completely different. One this it could use is a few $10 lunch specials to draw people in and build a crew of regulars, as most mains are about $20 or so, so right on the edge of having to think about the expense + drinks. What struck me was doing pub staples really, really well plus providing better sides than just chips with everything. If you live nearby I could see how this could become your regular haunt. The also have a "membership" option that will shave prices down, we didn't try it today, but if you like the food, look into it.
Went for the first time on a Sunday afternoon and was quite busy. First thing I noticed was all staff were very young and could not of had much bar experience. Got first bar orders wrong then had to ask three times what we wanted. while serving we were told they had run out of coke, coke zero, lemonade and tonic...The serving area was next to what you would call a sports bar area. There was no room between the tables and chairs and bar maybe a metre. Was also very close to the screens it made them blurry so had to move to bistro area. Meals were ordered and was quite quick. Salmon size was amazingly small for $30 price tag with no sides on a bed of tomatoes and green stuff, smaller than entree. Pasta was good and had a large pizza. Pizza was good but very over priced which was for most things on menu. Manager didn't seem to want to do much about the problems was more interested in talking to staff (wasn't work related). Don't think we will be back.
I have been here twice now and love coming here, as it is close to the train and we meet up with friends who live out that way. The food is lovely and we sat outside on the top level, very comfortable. The only thing I found strange was that it took 2 bar staff to serve you - one took the order and poured drinks the other stood near the cash register and processed your order and took payment.........it just made the wait at the bar that much longer, because two bar staff were looking after the one customer.......why can't the one who is pouring the drinks do the payment side also and the second bar staff attend to another customer who is clearly waiting to be served? Just a thought....

I previously gave this place a 5 star rating however I'm reducing it to 3 Reason: They have live music on a Saturday evening (maybe other times too) but the last few times I've been there to listen to the music, I was shocked to find that the artist was playing over the jukebox. These artists have trained hard to become good enough to play in a live venue setting and I think it's rude of the business to keep the jukebox going while these people are playing. Sitting over on the dining side, you cannot hear anything feom the live music, sitting by the bar, you can hear both the artist and the jukebox playing together. If you want to hear the live music, you have a choice of 2 or 3 tables closest on which to sit. This is a big insult to the people who are performing. If you advertise live music, turn the jukebox off so the people can hear it!
Great hotel, family friendly with a good atmosphere, the service is exceptional and the staff very friendly. Special mention to the kitchen, the meals come out quickly, and together but I must say their pizzas are next level. Best we have had and very worthy, thin crust which is perfect with just enough toppings. Make a booking because it is essential. 11mths on May 23 update: I don’t know what has happened in the kitchen but the food has slipped in quality. Pizza’s have become a sloppy cheese frisbee style of meal, the fries are over cooked and dripping with oil to a state where they can’t be eaten. Extremely disappointed is an understatement after the past food quality was sensational. Everything else is great but management need to revisit the present kitchen staff. Sadly very disappointed, it’s a 2 star eat out now
Stopped for lunch today with 6 friends. Sat outside, which got quite warm when the sun finally came out. Menu was small, but good variety. Food and prices were quite good, no complaints. The major downside was the woman who was fulfilling the role of Covid Marshall. Talk about cranky pants! Throwing chairs around, dropping the F bomb in front of patrons, including young children, and walking around with a scowl on her face all day. It got so bad that I had to approach the manager to voice my concerns. This proved a waste of time as he ended up having a good laugh with her instead of a good talking to. Nice place to eat. I'll come again, but the staff need some serious work.
Awesome lil pub in Jannali. Had live music playing when we went so we immediately felt warmly welcomed and loved the vibes. There's plenty of room outdoor and indoors with a separate gaming room. Screens everywhere indoors for the sports enthusiasts. There's a nice selection of beers n ciders on tap and good overall selection of drinks. Food is fantastic and perfectly portioned. We had the steak sandwich, schnitzel with mushroom sauce and buttermilk fried chicken, all of which were absolutely delicious. There's parking behind the pub and also on street. If you're not driving, Jannali train station is directly opposite. We will definitely go again and recommend for others.
This place opens very early, so I wondered how good it was as a morning cappuccino setting. You will see from my pics that it was completely empty. Yet, surprisingly, the coffees took about 10 or more minutes. It was also a pretty average coffee. Not burnt or anything, just not particularly flavoursome. I feel with a different coffee blend this place would make a marvellous morning coffee stop. Yes, I realise that its primary purpose is not as a cafe but it is a lovely spot so why waste the opportunity for morning business.
This is my local pub, and I enjoy the ambience of the interior and exterior. Whilst it is a bit noisy inside, when busy, I find the overall set up delightful. The staff are extremely friendly, and if you are a regular to this pub, they "know" your face. I highly encourage people to book for a seat in the evening, or the Friday, Saturday, Sunday lunch rush! Especially for the bistro "booth" seating. I have ordered regularly from the menu, and absolutely adore the poached chicken sandwich, chicken schnitzel and pizzas
WOW so very impressed with the quality, presentation and freshness of our take home dinner for lockdown date night. Takeaway cocktails too were perfect and we went all out with sweets and so glad we did crumble was delicious and fig ice cream was an added touch of luxury to a delightful meal. During Covid lockdown we all need something to make us smile and we applaud Union Place for taking such pride in the taste and presentation of their take home meals and service with a smile. Thank you Union Place Hotel
Nice place yes but the owners are cheapskates. 1. Credit card/debit card charge on all transactions, they DO NOT warn you or tell you about them until you confirm that there is a charge. 2. Ordered the parmi, paid extra for potatoes and beans thinking that chips would come with it, nope. 3.Portion sizes are small compared to other local hotels. 3. When asking for a rum with diet coke, normal coke came through instead. 4. Better off going to Como or The Prince, better parking and you get more for your money!
Rang to organise a large table, in a certain area, 5 weeks in advance, and was told to use the online booking system. On arrival we found out we had been allocated 2 booths, in an area where we then couldn't stand to mingle, so ended up moving to the smoking area which suited better, but we couldn't order food there. We were so glad to all see each other again that the night was still fun, but the Union as a venue for large groups is not recommended, unless you like switching tables 3 times ...
This bar has a great atmosphere and buzz about it. Always busy and a mix of people and culture. They do quiz nights etc and have different deals on food and drinks throughout the week. As a regular customer I enjoy going here or getting take away. Only downside is sometimes the food and drinks can look great but there are some inconsistencies. Some of the staff could do with some more training on customer service but this will also come as they gain more experience. Overall a great venue!
Our local pub in Jannali village. Love it! Food, ambience, convenience of booking. We are regulars and we recommend it any day of the week. Can't wait to try The Tomahawk!!

I ordered dinner from here on Sunday night to be delivered to my dad’s for a Father’s Day surprise. The food was delivered perfectly on time and my parents said the food was delicious, the Union Place Hotel even went the extra mile and added some complimentary Sangria and beer to the order. Thank heaps for making my dad’s Fathers day so special in these hard times, it really cheered them both up seeing as his day couldn’t be spent with his loved ones. Thanks Lesley
This is a review on the outstanding customer service I received from Katelyn (or Caitlin… or any other form of spelling of the name!) I called asking for any walk in availability. Turns out it was a fully booked night- no room to wriggle! Long story short, she was an absolute legend and worked something out for us. A legend over the phone (would want to be her friend!) and made it work for us when we got there. I hope you see this!! Thank you so much!!!
Union place is a great pub to hit that Aussie pub food craving / setting. It’s a very nice venue with a great outdoor area to enjoy a drink and some food sitting in the sun. If the weather isn’t being friendly, indoors is great also. Notable recommendations to the chilli pasta, focaccia and salt and pepper squid. I definitely recommend coming and visiting the union place. Make sure you book though as the venue is quite propose with the locals!
This pub has a long inventive menu, but some dishes don't come out not as described (steer clear of the poached chicken sandwich, it has none of the things mentioned, preserved lemon, walnut and basil, and just tastes like tinned mayonnaise chicken from the supermarket). They have a great alcohol selection but should reconsider their dog ban, there is a great open area at the very front that would be perfect for well behaved dogs.
I had my birthday family lunch here and everything was perfect! There was 9 of us to accomodate for and besides a small hiccup with our order the staff were very apologetic and accomodated for it. There were 8 different mains brought out and everyone just about cleaned their plates. Staff were great, service and food was great and a lovely atmosphere. Definatley will be back!!!

This is a great local, family friendly Pubs that serves delicious food. This pub is tastefully decorated and seating inside and out. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the place has a relaxed vibe. We had dinner here recently and the food was great. I had a prawn pasta and hubby had a steak. Both meals were well presented, generous servings and very tasty. Bar prices are quite reasonable. Well worth a looksee.
Brock and the team are absolutely fantastic! I totally appreciate the service and great food! A definite must for all Shire and families and couples to visit great portions great food menu and totally recommend to all Sydney siders. I will be back and I have to say quality of food is exceptional. Thank you to the manager and staff for your service tonight. See you all sooner than you know. Michael
This is now possibly the worst pub in the shire. This evening we had to return 14 beers because they weren't drinkable. When we spoke to the lincensee his said he would look into it, but didn't come back to us, absolutely shocking. Don't expect to see us any time soon. John, if you read this, you need to sort it out. This has happened for about the last 5-6 week . It's just not good enough.
It's new, it has teething problems, happy to update my rating at a later date. Currently, the bar staff are quite junior: it's never great when you hear from behind the bar "Which one is the Gin" Moderately busy Sunday lunch, food took 30+mins it was pretty good food. The aesthetic was nice, place is clean and nice! There was an interesting aroma inside towards the end of our afternoon, so we left.
Could not be more impressed with these guys. We walked in early on a Friday night with our two kids. Despite tables being clearly all reserved, it was no fuss for them to seat us. Staff were so friendly, attentive and food was delicious. The small things makes this place a local we will be proud of. Kids colouring packs were a great touch. Thanks so much and congratulations on a wonderful place.

Food is great, huge portions, fast service, food comes out hot. Well presented. Vegan options are wonderful. Staff is really attentive and friendly. I was here for my birthday with my family and Brock went out of his way to make sure everything was well. He prepared me a birthday drink and surprised me with a candle. Really thoughtful and made my night special. Will be coming back soon!
Wouldn't be back in a hurry. My ravioli was dried out with nowhere near enough zucchini sauce. No garlic bread on the menu, the only option was focaccia also dry and tasteless. My sister ordered veal Marsala, the sauce was curdled. The kids enjoyed the burgers. Very disappointing food & service.

Unless you have a booking on the weekend don’t bother you will get shuffled from table to table trying to battle for somewhere to sit as a walk in. Even tables in the bar area have reserved signs for dining anywhere from 6. They need to most likely start re-thinking there menu items, although food is nice there has been no variety in a very long time and severely over priced.
Absolutely wonderful Atmosphere, the service was awesome and the food was almost perfect. I had the parmy burger and chips. The chips were phenomenal and the burger was fantastic my only complaint was they killed my bacon :( it was very burnt. But that is literally my only complaint. Will definitely be back and will gladly recommend Union Place to anyone who cares to listen.
Nice new pub very conveniently located near the station in Jannali. Great sunny spot to sit in the afternoon with a top selection of beer and wine. Food is pretty damn good if a bit on the exy side. Fit out of the place is absolutely premium, very very nice. Would highly recommend for a few lazy afternoon cold ones or stopping in for dinner after getting off the train.

Great cocktails, nice clean venue, hip only issue i had was last night (friday) i ordered a 48 dollar steak and my partner ordered the veal. It came out with excellent presentation and a great tasting sauce but the meat on both dishes was overcooked i asked for a medium rare steak and it was so well done i may aswell of ordered congratulations cooked steak.
For their very first week, and a busy Friday night with live music and a great atmosphere, I give this place 5 stars. We didn't know what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised. The food and service was fast despite how packed it was. The food was delicious. The only thing I can say is a bit more standing room inside would be nice and go a long way.
There was a good choice of food. My grilled salmon was cooked to perfection and served with a variety of tasty vegetables. The service of drinks and food was prompt and the staff seemed to know what they were doing. The atmosphere inside where I sat with friends was pleasant.

New to the area, we came here for lunch on a public holiday Monday, and we pleasantly surprised with the food. There were a a few good craft beers on tap which was nice. Staff were accommodating of us and our new baby. Will be back. Updated - 5 stars - favourite pub in the area, food still great and the staff are super nice.
Really really good food, The Burrata with olive tapenade is beautiful and fresh. Lamb skewers are great. Prices are good. $60 average for tapas/2.5 people (food pictured) Lovely little pub in the Shire. Easy parking and easy access by train. Great environment. My favourite local pub, even tho I'm not a local …

I'm a little fussy, regarding menu substitutions and table changes, but nothing is ever too much trouble for the staff who definitely go above and beyond and make sure everything runs smoothly and everyone has a great time. As a result I'm all too happy to recommend the Union Place and its excellent staff.
I love this place! It's good for all occasions - after work drinks, family dinner, girls night out etc. It can be difficult to order from the bar as it's super busy, but the quality of the cocktails and food is great!

Had lunch here Sunday what a great pub the staff were all very friendly, the meals were awesome value for money, my steak was cooked perfectly, live music was good and not too loud that you couldn't have a conversation. The espresso martini's are one of the best you will get. Definitely will be back.
Visited Union Place Hotel, decor nice, still having teething problems at the Bar, food - pizza no flavour. Get ready to be charged transaction fees to use your eftpos -Savings/cheque account of 1.65%. The old addage "Cash is King" here otherwise you are slugged with all their fees. Won't be back.
The hotel was beautifully laid out. But the food wasn't great. .my lamb shanks was bland, the sauce was too tomatoey. The couscous had too much pepper in it, and I wasn't aware that that was what I was getting as I'm dairy intolerant. My friends steak was too raw and was cold. Chips were good.
Such a well put together place. The atmosphere is perfect and the food is even better! If anything the only issues I would have are the prices are a little high on the food and there isn't nearly enough street parking available. One plus is that it's a short walk to Jannali train station
Went there for the first yesterday afternoon for lunch, had the poached chicken sandwich.... the poached chicken was perfect and the sourdough bread was awesome, service was great. Finished with an Aperol gin sour cocktail from Brock, great new venue for the shire. Will be back soon .
Great modern, new pub - fab for all occasions. Delicious upmarket meals - not your average pub food, but instead a step up which is so nice! Try the specials - the fish is often really good. The pizzas are lovely too. Great range of beers and wines and tvs for the sport. Enjoy!
Some of the best food we've had in Sydney. The vegan options were unreal. People with dietary requirements have a wide range of options and are not just stuck with a bland garden salad. A lot of consideration and effort has gone into their menu, right down to the presentation.
Great atmosphere and vibe , super busy on a Saturday night but we managed to get a table. Our meals were a tad underwhelming (special and risotto) but the Pizza's looked amazing. Will stick with what we know next time.

Very nice pub setting with good menu offerings and good deals for members. The focaccia - garlic herbs and parmesan was a real and tasty surprise. Pear and rocket salad mixed with the s&p calamari was delightful and the pizza was enormous - next time small not medium.
Been a few times and generally enjoyed every time. But this last time we were made cocktails by the manager Brock from the new menu. They were some of the best I've personally had. Highly reccomend trying the signatures. He was super knowledgeable and helpful too.
An excellent pub! Union Place Hotel is very modern and has a great vibe to it! Even at the busiest of times, we are always accommodated. Food here is great and always value for money. I absolutely love going to this place at night, there is a great buzz about it.
It was a busy Tuesday night, we didn't book (we should have) all the booths were taken. Food was really yummy. Had the roast capsicum and the sweet potato fries. Nice and crispy. Nice decor, would be good to watch a game here, might be hard to get a seat though..

Has a nice atmosphere and food is good (yes agree bit pricey) but the lack of tables and being moved around to fit in other diners coming in later is off putting. Shame designed to have so many smoking tables which ultimately affects seating above too.
Excellent food all round We ordered takeaway prawn pasta and the calamari entree It was one of the best crispy calamari dishes we've ever had and the prawn pasta was also excellent. From ordering to the door was 35 minutes Would highly recommend
Ordered pickup pizza. Told 10-15 minutes. Wasn't ready till 45 minutes later. First time I ordered takeaway pizzas they were $20 each next time they were $35 each. Exactly the same pizzas. Tasty though. Probably not worth $35.
We're locals. Don't go there alot but we had my wife's 50th there a few months ago and drop in for dinner/drinks occasionally. Highly recommend Union Place for really good service and food and definitely worth checking out.

Generally a good experience. Don't sit outdoors as the smokers sections is incredibly close to the non smokers section. Had to move tables 3 times because we kept getting smoked out. The Prince is a better option.
Soon as we walked in we were greeted with a friendly smile and a warm welcome. The menue covered all taste's and it lived up to the descriptions. Good selection of beers and wines. Will be seeing me again …
Really great venue. Awesome trivia on a Monday night. Only negative is the kitchen seems to close what feels quite early so you can't get any dessert later in the evening if you are staying for a longer night.

Absolutely fantastic. A couple of vegan options (could improve here). The beautiful and gorgeous Charlotte who served us was a wonderful addition to the service world. Thank you for a wonderful night Union.
Restaurant priced meals, but restaurant quality. The drinks were a bit expensive $9 per beer or cider at lunch time. We didn't try the cocktails but they are $16 -$19. As of September 2022
Food flavours were lovely, however, risotto and pasta servings could be more generous. Salmon should have something more substantial than just fennel and tomatoes. Service was really slow.

Tried the union for the first time and I was very impressed. The food was lovely, the service was friendly. Not overpriced, unlike some pubs in the shire. We will definitely go back.
My pros are pretty much all around the atmosphere, it has beer and food which is good (however the cost of the food was pricey), but I love the big tables, booths and outdoor area.

Nice spot in the Shire with good food and drinks. Service is also good, with friendly staff. Nice atmosphere as well. The focaccia entree was delicious, as were the mains.
Delicious food, good selection of beers and wines and a relaxing environment. Make sure you book a table oif you're going on the weekend though or you may not get a table.
Food is delicious and staff are friendly. Lots of drink choices including cocktails. Shout out to our waiter Blake who went out of his way to ensure we had a great night!
Nice pub, a bit noisy, but pleasant indoor and and outdoor areas. Service is good, food is a bit above pub food and good value for money. Overall enjoy the visit there

Jannali is very lucky to have the Union...it was packed last night & the way the staff respond & how efficient the kitchen is, is a huge credit to all involved.
Been meaning to go here for ages and finally had dinner here. The pizza and kids meal was great. The staff were friendly and helpful. Will be coming back.
Yummy food, nice place to sit back, relax & have a meal & some drinks. Decently priced. Good portions. Staff are friendly & don't rush you out the door.
Food is average. The bar attendant was rude and she was not helpful. We usually eat at the Oatley pub which has much better wine prices and better food.
The food is great with nice atmosphere. They also give you colouring in activity packs with the kids meals which works great at entertaining my 3 kids.
Good stuff. Lovely selection of beer on tap, Chicken snitz was also very nice. salad and chips were done nicely. looking forward to coming back here.
Despite the Covid19 restrictions in place we found that going to the Union to be a truly relaxing experience. Worth considering for a spot of lunch.
Beautiful new venue nestled in the heart of Jannali. You wouldn't expect such a bustling and lively venue to be in such a quaint neck of the woods.
Enjoyed my first visit. Good venue, well set up. Food selection is varied but would be nice to see local beers on tap and a bit more of a selection.
Friendly and very accommodating, allowed us to move our reservation to a warmer spot even though it was busy. Great food, really nice cocktails
Good food, easy parking out back and good service. Menu needs more vegetarian options.
