The atmosphere at the bar was rather nice, but the service could be better. When we came in everyone was very eager to help and serve us, but it gradually got worse. For one we got like four servers, which is not common for places this one tries to be. Additionally, we were first asked whether we would like to have food only to be told later that food is only served downstairs. When we had wine we have not even drink that much for the server to come to try to pour us more. I still had more than half of when I started so if he poured it would be more than is considered acceptable to have in restaurants/bars. And the best was that later the service simply stopped. We were just told they were closing, but no one checked whether we have wine left, so we had to pour it ourselves. As for the quality of cocktails it was ok, but my expectations were somewhere else, hence given the price and what one can get, I believe there are better places. The selection of wine was nice.

Whoever chose the chairs at this place did not take comfort very seriously. Also, having a cocktail with someone sitting across the table from you feels more like a business meeting than a cocktail. Clue: make sure the chairs can be closer together when people come in with someone. Or put more small couches so they can sit on a couch. The cocktails are so-so. For £18 they should really be a lot better. Service is good. Having said that, on the balance of things, we likely won’t be back.
Have decided to review Upstairs at Rules as it's approximately 20 years since I first started frequenting the venue. In that time little has changed and this is key to both its success and its attraction. One very welcome addition; Brian Silva, has brought elegant and reliably excellent cocktails to the bar... stirred and never shaken. By some distance the best martinis curated in London, and by far the most pleasant environment in which a gentleman would wish to enjoy them.
The gentleman refused us because “we were not dressed appropriately” with shorts. Fair play…. But then when I asked for a suggestion of a casual place with quality drinks, I was told “I’m sorry sir but the only places I would recommend would not accept you in your casual attire.” Sorry for forcing you to speak with a peasant!!!! We went to the “American bar” in savoy instead and while upscale and we were slightly underdressed, it was delightful and we were welcomed.
Chanced upon Upstairs at Rules on a frenzied afternoon in Covent Garden. Beautiful space, decor, service, atmosphere.... and yes, no music. With chairs and tables well spaced, makes for a gentle hum of conversation as the background sound, reminiscent, as many have said, of an exclusive members club. You'll spend a little more than pubs / clubs in the area, but oh so worth it for the mongrammed-cotton-coaster experience.
What to say about Rules? Utterly fabulous? Classy? Posh but not stuffy? Not for the unruly? It's the perfect blend of really high class dining, with a menu that includes old school favourites but all done with real class, but not in such a way that makes one feel uncomfortable. I love it. Chuffing expensive but I really don't care as it's worth every penny.
Went here on a Saturday night, waiters are very personable and the cocktails were very incredible. We were a bit more on the smart casual than dressy attire, staff treated us very well. Very attentive and personable staff, felt welcomed and in good hands. Great cocktails in an even better atmosphere, very much recommend!
The decor and location are fantastic. The staff are friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the drinks left me wanting more. My Bloody Mary was quite average and lacked depth. My partner’s drink well just sweet and was reminiscent of a toilet air freshener. The cost just doesn’t match the quality. Overpriced.
Quite but very relaxing upstairs bar location. Extensive cocktail menu and wine list, really luxurious expiernce. Reccomend the duchess or Cambridge or Rules Royal. You can buy the cocktail making book from the bar as well.
Still a wonderful venue with a splendid old-world feel to it. Pricing seems to be up a bit post-pandemic, but that's not surprising as that whole sector struggles. Great to have it back again after the pandemic closure.
Amazing experience, the staff were so attentive as great restaurants should have. I loved the ambiance and the food was excellent. Luckily I wasn't paying, but would certainly recommend, and would love to visit again.
My favourite restaurant in London, a unique experience of wild game and fish, always a must when in London , great service and not too expensive given its pedigree , always a great crown of class
A truly indulgent experience. The atmosphere was lovely, we chose to sit in the winter garden but the contemporary room was equally splendid. The service was excellent, as were the cocktails.
Great cocktails, the taste as described on the menu is so accurate. Fantastic service with warm relaxing ambience. We went after dinning and will go pre dinning next time just to swap about.
I ordered venison which is very good, my husband order leg of rabbit which was a bit over cooked. They have many choices and tastes good. Just that very pricy, as an experience it is OK.
What a wonderful find! The cocktails were sublime and the garden is such a pleasure to sit in. We really didn't want to leave. The staff made us feel exceptionally welcome.
I really enjoyed my visit here with my wife. We tried some excellent whiskies and were very well looked after by Sam, Diogo and Hari. We'll definitely be back!
As ever, a sheer delight being back here. Wonderful service, very attentive and friendly. Gorgeous cocktails, wonderful surroundings and a special place.
The roof top bar is really pretty. Very nice cocktails and quite original menu, but for fancy high end cocktails there was no effort on the presentation.
Good cocktails but absolutely infested with mice. Under every chair and couch and one even dropped out of a tree. At least they were cute.
This place is beautiful and the cocktails were delicious. They were expensive though ~£20 and there’s no music so atmosphere is a bit off.
Private dining at our favourite restaurant in London, such a beautiful evening. Excellent food, service and stunning room.
Nice decor but absolutely dead with no music. If you’re south of 40 on a Saturday night perhaps try else where …
The best kept secret in London for 5* cocktails. The garden is just wonderful. A bucket list experience.
Amazing cocktails we also had food down stair the wait start were amazing and very kind and fast
We only drank wine. And rested. We didn't sit long enough to comment. It's very central.
Wonderful space. Great cocktails. The staff are amazing. Sir back and be pampered.
Rules is a superb restaurant. The food is delicious and the service is impeccable.
Nice but not much ambience. Old and with history. Good for talking talking.
