Honestly, this store is a great little store, with a huge passion for corals and fish. I recently bought an established 40 gallon AOI cube reef tank from a coworker, and it needed some TLC. I knew that he had bought a hot pink bubble tip anemone from Woody's after he bought the tank, some 3 years ago, so I got curious and decided to check them out. I'm really glad I did! Since then I have picked up some of my favorite tank members from them, and I'm working on putting together a custom 35 gallon AOI cube reef tank that I plan on stocking with fish and coral from Woody's Seahorse Aquarium & Supply. From unique invertebrates to fish with big personality, they've got what you need. Just check out my tank! Here's my list of stock from Woody's Seahorse Aquarium, and when I set up my 35 gallon symbiote cube, it will grow even more! 7 Sexy shrimp 2 Bubble tip Anemones 4 Rock Flower Anemones 1 Cleaner Shrimp 1 Marble Star - Jawdropping color, and this guy scavenges all around my glass and rock, carefully lifting up his legs to avoid trampling corals in his path 1 Porcelain Anemone Crab 2 Trochus Snails 2 Astrea Turbo Snails 2 Cerith Snails 1 Scarlet Hermit Crab 3 Common Hermit Crabs (can't remember name exaclty haha) 1 small Bird's Nest SPS Coral frag 1 Fungia Plate LPS Coral - in my top five favorites for sure! 2 Ricordea Yuma Mushroom Corals - One of which has doubled in size since I bought it about a month ago 2 Ricordea Florida Mushroom Corals 1 Colony of Sunny D Zoas - Began with 7 polyps a month ago and is growing 3 more 1 Colony of Rainbow Hornet Zoas- Began with 11, now 12 after a few weeks 1 Colony of Pikachu Zoas- picked up today, 5 polyps 1 Colony of Utter chaos Zoas- picked up today, 3 large polyps
I hate to give this place 3 stars. It's an awesome store with a great selection of corals and fish. They probably have the best selection of equipment and dry goods in Portland, which is crazy considering how small the place is. Despite all the great stuff they have, one of the owners is not very friendly. After one bad experience a couple of years ago, I was determined to try again, thinking it was possibly a bad day. I've gone 3 or 4 times since then and every time has been mostly the same. The woman is amazing... She will remember your name after like 2 visits which is a really friendly gesture. You can tell she truly cares about the customers and the fish she takes care of. The man on the other hand seems annoyed at every question you ask or comment you make. Every time I've gone here, the guy has made me feel like I shouldn't ask questions or try to have a conversation about aquariums/corals/whatever. making me feel fairly unwelcome. The reefkeeping hobby is HARD. The last thing someone wants, especially someone new to the hobby, is to feel afraid to ask questions. I never visited when Woody owned the place, but from all I've heard, he was passionate and friendly about reefing which I tend to believe, from reviews and the fact that his daughter (the woman above) is also that way. Its unfortunate that only half the shop still feels/acts that way. So yeah, that's why I can't give them 5 stars. I hope the guy can figure his stuff out... I'd really love to keep giving these guys my business but I can't justify it anymore. If you want a friendly environment with really well taken care of corals, cuttlefish is the best alternative in Portland.
What an awesome place! We were visiting Portland from out of state, and were looking for local saltwater/coral shops. We saw that Woody's Seahorse had really good reviews so we had to check it out. They have a great selection of coral frags (LPS and SPS), as well as saltwater fish, anemones, hermit crabs, and of course seahorses. Everything looked so healthy and well cared for, with clean tanks. You can tell that they take a lot of pride in their craft. They're extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the animals they sell, and can answer any of your questions or just have a fascinating conversation with you about the saltwater hobby. I was especially impressed by how well they packed up our purchases for us, knowing that we were going to be flying back with them. They wrapped everything up so well, sealed watertight and bound in a very thick layer of bubble wrap, that it survived two flights in our checked baggage without a single issue. Perfect condition. They didn't have to do that, and could have just left it to us to figure out how to get it all back safely, but that just shows you how much care and effort they put into what they do. If we ever find ourselves back in Portland one day, we'll definitely be coming back to Woody's Seahorse. I wish we had a place like this in Birmingham: a local, small business run by people who are truly dedicated to the hobby, and whose passion is reflected in the care of their animals.
We've been Seahorse customers for over 10 years and plan to continue to be for many more! Some of the first saltwater fish I purchased a decade ago are still alive and doing well. I'm always impressed by the selection of corals they have and the unique fish they stock. More importantly, their service is top notch and they really make you feel welcome in their store. Recently we experienced a disaster with our house due to a major water leak that required us to completely take down our 90 gallon tank. Without bating an eye, Terry and his wife took in our fish and coral temporarily while repairs were being made on our house. We now have our tank back up and running and just got our fish and coral back yesterday. They took care of our fish and coral like they were their own. We are so grateful and can't wait until our tank is mature enough to add in more coral and fish.
It’s not often that you feel compelled to leaving a 5 star review for a place you haven’t actually been to... Woody’s Seahorse is one of the many aquarium stores I contacted to source an unusually large aquarium for a peculiar project. Terry helped me find a few options outside the box of custom made 4 and 5 digit $$$ acrylic tanks. He didn’t even try to sell me anything, he simply listened, understood and we brainstormed options. After some digging around, he was able to suggest a couple relevant options that fit our project quite well. He was also available for follow up questions all because he’s just interested, passionate about the topic and is simply a helpful soul. Just based on the level of customer service I received for this project, I have no reservations recommending this store for all your aquarium needs!
Awesome shop tucked away in North Portland. You couldn't possibly ask for better customer service. I am just setting up my first reef tank and was overwhelmed by all the conflicting info online. I spent about 2 hours talking with these guys about everything I needed to get started from equipment, lighting and water requirements, the benefits of large vs small tanks, types of symbiotic relationships between certain species, you name it! They were extremely knowledgeable and very patient with me, and at the end of the day I walked out of there with all the equipment and knowledge I needed to get started setting things up. I will be sourcing from this shop as much as possible moving forward and I highly recommend you do the same.
Absolutely superb knowledge and loyalty. We appreciate those who treat the customer with the utmost respect and show appreciation towards our purchase and support.. however it's not often we see the store or owners any respect or concerns towards their live animals or wellbeing. This business and the two helping me whom I think are owners absolutely do. They explained the importance of giving the right environment for their fish and when doing aquarium of this type requires patience and persistence as well as consistent accuracy. Thank you for being trustworthy and I will definitely be coming back as a loyal customer
Tery and Tusely are fantastic and very friendly and knowledgeable! they've got great selection of corals, fish and equipment, and if they don't have it they're generally able to order it for you. They really took the time to answer all of my questions when I got my first reef tank. They do get busy sometimes and if you're needing some explanation or more in depth info, they may have to pause the conversation to help another customer real quick, but always come back to make sure you're questions are indeed answered!
It's a garage that has been turned into a saltwater fish store. It's one of the coolest set ups I have ever seen. It's pretty small but somehow still has the best selection of fish and coral in the Portland area. And the customer service is unmatched. They are super knowledgeable and friendly and I feel like they genuinely want to help. Definitely my favorite saltwater place to go to. I live about 45 minutes away but it's worth the drive.
Tulley and Terrance are very friendly and knowledgeable people this was my first salt water Aquarium they help me out big-time I would totally recommend this place to anybody they have a different variety of saltwater fish and seahorses and supplies very good place to go I have jellyfish and I didn't really know nothing about these wonderful creatures and they helped me big time.
I have not been to Woody's since about 2013 or so. Visited the shop over the weekend that Woody's daughter and Terry are still running and I love it! Very nice fish, corals, attitudes and prices! Chromis are half the cost of everywhere else in town, cheaper test kits than anywhere else...and super selection..glad to see Woody's legacy being kept up so well. I'll be back!
Woody's is great! Terry and Tewsley are friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. Their prices are fair, their corals are gorgeous, and their fish are well cared for. We feel so fortunate to have them as a go-to resource for our saltwater tank needs. It's a small shop (covid precautions allow 4 people at a time) so expect a wait if they are busy.
I love this shop! I’ve gotten outstanding advice and Terry and his wife never tire of sharing their knowledge with me. Having just gone through ick in my reef tank taking their advice on fallowing my tank and treating my fish has given me a fresh start with a healthy tank. From here on out I will only shop for livestock at Woody’s!
Amazing place! We were staying at an Airbnb across the street and wandered into it on our walk on our first day. The woman who owned it (Tulley?) gave us amazing recommendations for the city and everything she recommended was perfect. Must visit if you’re in the area!
Visited twice just to browse. It's a little awkward inasmuch as you're going into someone's garage... but clearly the proprieter is passionate about their livestock and takes pride in selling the healthiest animals possible. A small but very high quality little shop!
The owners are a wealth of knowledge. I’m setting up my first tank and they have patiently answered my questions and offered advice from supplies to fish to get started off on the right foot. Glad to have such a great local spot to shop and support.
Just stopped in to browse, I wasn't even looking to buy, but the owners were so friendly! Very clean shop, and super welcoming. I had fun looking at all the beautiful tanks and wished I had an aquarium fan to recommend this place to.
Love Woody's Seahorse. My wife and I enjoy the great selection of fish and coral at great prices. Terry is very knowledgeable and helps us out so much. He does not try to get us to spend money on things we don't need.
Wonderful shop with exceptional customer service!!! The staff here (husband and wife) really do care about each customer individually and genuinely care how your reef is doing + how they can help. :)
We started our first nano saltwater aquarium and the people here are so friendly and helpful. Even though the building looks a little rough the quality of fish and coral is amazing.
Decent priced healthy fish. They seem to know each indivual personality. Nice looking rock. Also 1$ zoa polyps were nice quick grab and perfectly acclimated in my newly cycled tank.
Really lovely, very knowledgeable owners in an intimate (garage) setting, some beautiful fish and more seahorses than you'll ever see in one place. Prices are very reasonable.
Got some healthy fishes and beautiful corals from Terry and Tewsley. Tewsley have unreal skills on catching tang from frag tank full of corals!
Cool place for fish and corals. Bought a 4 inch bubble tip anemone and two mos. later it divided and now I have three gorgeous bubble tips!
Healthy looking livestock. The yellow clown gobie was eating right away and corals opened up within an hour of being placed in my tank
Great place. The staff are friendly and super helpful. For such a small location surprisingly well stocked.
Love the staff owners are amazing so helpful and the selection is so diverse!
Have been a customer and fan of Wood's for many years!!!! They are the best!!
Terry and Toolslie are incredible folks .
