I had a troubling and negative experience at this store. The owner is very condescending, a know it all, and not honest. I purchased some old type stove burners he had in stock, and assorted other things. I primarily came in for the burners. He didn't give me a price for them at the beginning as I had requested, but said let's wait until the end. He then asked me what other stuff was on my list, but I wasn't going to shop for those items there as his store is very pricey. Being the expert salesperson he is, he spent two hours with me making sure that I purchased every item on my list at his store. Afterwards, he cross-referenced some older numbers I had and found them in his extensive card catalog. That part was very helpful and quite impressive. Not many stores in the area have that capability. He still didn't tell me the prices on these items, eight in total. He then said okay let's ring this up. He then began writing these insane amounts on my ticket. It was a hectic day with many people waiting in line behind me. So call it peer pressure. I just stood there mouth agape and paid for it. Later I found the exact same items at Reliable Parts on SE 114th and Foster Road for $55.00 less. So I tried taking them back, but he reused the return. He said he told me when I was buying them that there were not any returns on electrical items or after 14 days. That never happened. It also turns out he noticed that one of the items were broken. Those items were in the same box that he placed them in, unmoved, and unaltered the whole time I had them. In the end, he just shooed me and my wife out of the store refusing to take them back. One of the other items was a padlock he insisted he would take back if it didn't work. He added that he also has another policy in regards to returns. He charges a 30% restocking fee. I would stay clear of this very expensive trap. On another note... While there he sold a homeless guy a pair of bolt cutters. So if you happen to get a bike stolen in that area, you can go by and thank him.

Buyer beware! I decided to shop local and paid for it. I needed to replace an old thermostat and was unaware that I needed a millivolt thermostat. After some discussion, I ended up purchasing a Honeywell CT87K for $49.94 which by the way is $26.27 higher than if I had purchased the same thermostat from Home Depot and $20 more than if I had purchased it from Ace Hardware or from Honeywell Directly! After getting it home and installing it, the thermostat did not work. I called Honeywell, and they informed me that I needed a different kind of thermostat. I called Ankeny Hardware, told them the issue, and they were very helpful in finding me a replacement; a White-Rodgers M30 which I believe they sell for $29.99. By the way, Home Depot sells it for $18.42. I then asked Patrick about the return and he promptly told me that they do not return electrical items, as is stated clearly on their hand-written receipts. Do your research, know exactly what you need, and how much you should expect to pay for it before heading over to Ankeny Hardware, because the moral of this story is If you want to get over-charged for non-returnable electrical items, then go see the helpful folks at Ankeny Hardware. Otherwise, head over to Home Depot, Ace Hardware or some other chain that understands the concept of customer service.

I have had great experiences here, and I have also had some sllllllooooowwwww ones. The pro's definitely outweigh the cons with these guys. Pro's: Friendly and knowledgable staff, great high quality product selection, Locally owned, Close to my apartment, love the clustered layout... you can find what you need but may stumble upon other things in the meantime. Con: only one con: slowest place in the world if you buy something with a debit/credit card. I mean, seriously guys, you need to get a serious inventory system happening; you should be checking folks out in less than 4-5 minutes, but i've stood in a line (multiple times) for 15+ minutes with 1-2 people actually ahead of me. Hire someone who gets the inventory/customer service flow and you'll kick ass: Just get a modern inventory system, then you'd be awesome. Still a 5 star rating, just hoping you'll get that customer purchasing system modernized.

Negative: As others, I too felt the owner to be somewhat condescending when I asked questions (may just be his personality). I needed a motor for an appliance. I wanted the OEM replacement. Tried to sell me an aftermarket (China made) for 2x what it sold for online. The aftermarket did not have the same pins as the OEM. He told me all motors are now made in two factories so I wouldn't find the OEM. I trusted my intuition and declined even though I desperately needed the part. Another independent appliance store ordered the actual OEM part which I received in one day. They also sold it to me for less than the aftermarket I was initially offered. I feel the owner was more interested in making a non-refundable sale, with mark-up. Business integrity and ethics are important to me. Positive: If you are in a pinch when all other options are unavailable, will probably have what you need (for a price).

Called looking for an AC unit yesterday, which they said they had in stock. Awesome! However I forgot to ask about size and price, so I called back and the immediate response I got was "We have AC units in stock, just come down.", in a very short voice. I then asked the price and was given a range $150-400. OK. So I came down, walked in overhearing the two guys commenting rudely about all the phone calls they have been getting about AC units. Feeling embarrassed and annoyed, since I was one of those folks who had just called, I asked to purchase their $150 unit..."We're out of stock." OK. I really want to support our local businesses, they were the only store in town with AC in stock, which is awesome for them, but their customer service was horrible and then rush me off the phone with a quote for something you don't even have in stock was just annoying.

  • Nick Milhauser

I bought a portable AC at Ankeny on Saturday. I could tell when I got there that they were exhausted, and way busier than usual. They were still very friendly and informative, and actually HAD AN AC IN STOCK. I left my debit card there like a moron, but they kept it safe for me until I was able to claim it this afternoon. Overall, it was a great experience (leaving my card behind was my own damn fault). I really appreciate that they were open on a Saturday, and were friendly despite being visibly exhausted. Now I'm going to take to social media to post a bunch of pictures of myself hanging out comfortably in my living room with my new air conditioning unit. My friends and family will be thrown into a jealous rage, and that wouldn't have been possible without you guys. :) A+ 10/10

Came in with my kiddo to look for a simple electronic part. Was condescendingly spoke to by the fat guy who is the owner and is apparently a know it all - and we left that place real fast because of the that awful place... edit response to the answer. No your workers don’t know their stock and asked overarching questions and they seem to get frustrated so they naturally default to call the owner as it looks like they were baffled, you appeared to about to have a aneurism. And I don’t appreciate your language and behavior in front of children. I knew after one second of talking with you that you didn’t have what I was looking for because your questions went on a tangent about all sorts of possibilities and seem to take spike your HBP. NOPe!

  • Heath Ross

Price gouging during heatwave in order to reap a profit over trying to help their customers. Deplorable and unethical but I guess, whatever works from their standpoint. I won't be shopping here again. $499 for an AC that goes for $330 to $350. I should have done my research better and will try not to get swindled next time I encounter people like this. At least I won't be getting swindled by the people at Ankeny Hardware anymore. Neither will any of my friends. The "no refunds and no cancellation policy" should have tipped me off from the get go... but I was too trusting. Buyers beware, be smarter than I was and do your research. Good luck and Godspeed future buyers!

These guys saved my butt. I’m a homeowner and do it yourselfer. I needed a complete new motherboard for my furnace. After being quoted $500-$1000 to have an HVAC guy replace it, I decided to give it a go myself. These guys had the part in stock, definitely a little more expensive than I could have bought it off amazon for, but I didn’t have to wait a week so it was definitely worth the cost. The gentleman was very helpful. All of the other local HVAC supply houses would not sell to anyone without a contractors license, and this place sells to retail customers without question. Will definitely go back when I need more HVAC parts.

  • Natalie Rincon

Extremely rude over the phone and hung up on me. EDIT (in response to the owners comment): I also only had one question and he said “I don’t even know what you’re talking about!” and hung up. He didn’t offer to put me on hold and also didn’t explain the store was busy, otherwise I would have held. I wasn’t in a hurry. Rather than apologizing, he’s making up excuses for his rude behavior. I went to another independent hardware store nearby who didn’t have what I was looking for, but instead were extremely friendly and helpful and gave me a few other places to look instead. Go to Hippo or literally anywhere else but here.

  • Paul Packard

I was referred by another hardware store who said they absolutely couldn't help me with bathroom exhaust fans unless I wanted to buy all new. I had 30+ yr old fans. 2nd Hardware store said the same thing. "If you want fans, go to Ankeny". Ankeny knew exactly what I needed, that they were still available, ordered them, and they arrived before they said they would. VERY knowledgeable on electrical fans and motors. There may be a short line as they give their full attention to whoever is next at the counter for as long as is needed to answer questions to your satisfaction.

  • Patrick Ranspot

Parts available to consumers! Furnace stopped working on a night it was going to be a low of 26°F. Luckily I could tell what part wasn't working. Canvassed the metro area for parts store and Ankeny Hardware was the only one I could find who sold to consumers. Don't get me started on the wholesale racket to sell only to businesses who significantly upcharge when you call them to fix anything. Anyway, Ankeny Hardware had the part I needed, saved me over $400 dollars, and the family is toasty warm. I will definitely be back but kind of hope I won't need to. ;)

  • jbucky

This place is amazing. Shop local, dudes in there are Pro's with real world knowledge. Great advice and 99% of time have what you need at prices same as if not better than home depot. Local, hood prices this place is worth it alone for the knowledge that you don't find at the big box store. I have bought a ton off stuff there from toilet flappers to gardening tools. This place doesn't carry rubbish. Only good stuff, good brands well made. Awesome to have places like this.

  • Joni Zimmerman

This place is amazing. Norman, the owner (I think) has been driving 30 miles out to Newberg this past few days, delivering for free portable AC units that donors had purchased, to people who live in a public housing apartment complex in Newberg. These people were going to be evicted for having window AC units. In the middle of the heat wave! Norman is a super hero!!!! He has made at least 2 trips that I know for sure, and probably several more. Shop there!!!!

  • Kirra Quinn Anderson

Overheard in the store, the way he talks to people on the phone is appalling. It wasn't just one occasion, but multiple calls on different days I was in. Yeah, prices are high, and shockingly so on seasonal items. The "old school charm" is really just out of touch. You'll find people just as helpful at other stores, and they won't be condescending or price gouge. You have so many options in Portland, go anywhere else.

  • Suzanne Smith

These guys were amazing! They stayed open for me at the end of the day and solved my easel repair issue cheerfully and with the skill as only an experienced hardware sales team can. Thank you guys! My newly purchased craigslist easel now doesn't wobble on the table. I was feeling like I made a bad deal...no more thanks to your compassionate over and above service. You guys at Ankey Hardware are the best!

  • Pablo Martos

Favorite neighborhood hardware store. Need an oil lamp? They have it. Need a 10,000 btu a/c unit? They have it. Need the little latch for a busted door on your dryer? They have it. All kinds of appliance parts and hardware, and a great selection of tools, and a long history in the neighborhood. I'm not at all surprised they outlasted the OSH that opened up two blocks away for a while.

  • Joshua Robertson

Called in to ask some question about electric motors. Up front stated that i didn't know much about them. I then proceeded to have one of the most condescending and belligerently not helpful conversations I have ever had with the person answering the phone. They might be good for people with expert level knowledge but based on what just happened I will never get anything from them.

  • Faisal Habib

Super helpful folks. We went in looking for a specific part for a freezer handle and they spent the time looking for the part as well as educating us on it. Icing on the top was when they didn't have it they were happy to refer us to another store that would rather than just blowing us off. This is what small business ownership is all about and why all of us should support them

  • Kendra Vizen

Our furnace went out at 5:45pm on a cold night . The store closes at 6p and we are 22min away. We were able to call the store and spoke to Patrick. We told them we were on our way and they let us in after the store closed. They have a great selection of furnace parts and were able to replace our rare ignitor. Thank you Patrick . Great customer service! Will be back!

  • Timothy Shockley

Old fashioned hardware store. I feared Lowe's and Home Depot killed these places, glad that i was wrong. The best part is that the very friendly counter person knows what he is talking about. I went in for a dryer part and he knew what i needed off the top of his head. That kind of knowledge /service is hard to find anyplace else. Not here.

  • Ronaldo Tinnell

Order an oven element March 30. Called twice and got a response of "We'll call you" but nothing. Visited last week requesting a refund and waited an hour to be given a list of excuses. Returned today only to be call explicit names and given only partial credit. Do not bother with this store. The service is slow and rude when you get it.

  • Y B

This place is stuck in the past and I believe they sold me a busted capacitor. Unfortunately for me they don't have tools to test the capacitors they sell...that's so strange. By the way I paid 42 bucks for a capacitor that was 8 bucks on Amazon. This guy knows what he is doing and is taking advantage of people.

  • Matt

I’ve come in with really dumb questions, always got steered in the right direction and graciously without being made to feel like a dummy. My first stop any time I need either a simple electronic part or a completely obscure fridge part — even now that we live clear on the other side of town.

  • Kendra Hawk

Norman is a life saver! Furnace broke on Christmas Eve and I just needed a part. Called and was met within the hour and for only a small extra emergency fee. Norman walked us through everything and was very knowledgable and helpful. He was nothing short of polite and kind. Thank you again!

  • Christopher O'Shields

Cool store! I'm glad I was in a rush because there was a lot of impulse buy possibility. I wasn't very knowledgeable about what I needed and the guy who helped me out was welcoming and helpful. I hope to go back when I have time and cash to blow on random stuff I didn't know I wanted.

  • Bigmatt503

It's a nice store and the owner seems knowledgeable. The issue is that he has a sign that says "get your protest supplies here" it went on to list stuff that these vandals would need to "protest" in Portland. Why on earth would a small business owner encourage the sort of behavior?

  • Otosan Ookami

Grew up nearby, Always had what I needed. Good tools and connectors. Moved to the far end of St. Johns 14 years ago, Still my first stop when I need emergency items for extreme heat or cold. Thank you for having what I needed to keep my kids comfortable in this year's heat bomb.

  • Mark Lawrence

I purchased an over-priced screw extractor set here. It was made of low quality metal and broke off in the screw I was trying to extract. When I tried to return it with the recept the staff was rude and denied store credit and/or a refund. Avoid this place, go anywhere else.

  • Jillian Pettit

Super helpful and patient under the stressful circumstances of a long line of people trying to buy DIY air filter parts and a barrage of phone calls first thing in the morning during the terrible fires. Thanks for the help. I hope you get that bottle of Oban. We'll be back!

  • Jon

Patrick was incredibly helpful today and helped me get exactly the parts I needed to get my furnace back in service--for much less than I would have paid to have an HVAC service call + parts. Great, old school hardware store. I highly recommend them.

  • Peter H

Saturday during a heatwave in Portland. This was the only store open that I could find that stocked a full range of HVAC parts. They had the capacitor that I needed for my AC. I installed it, and my AC is again humming away.

  • Michelle Degnin

Typically like supporting local business, but when I went in for sheet protectors I heard the owner explain to charge high. They wanted $1/sheet. It was def. feeling exploitative. I will not be going back again. Ever.

  • nicholas mazza

A bunch of self important, mansplaining boomers in this joint. Never going back, but that doesn’t really matter because they will probably never read this because they clearly don’t care about customer service.

  • Jeanne Kennedy

This place holds it down. It’s quirky and sometimes slow to get out of there, but they have the best shovels, a nice selection of basic hardware stuff, and you can buy small things that aren’t bubble packaged.

  • Brandon Alves

Don't go here! They don't back the products they carry. Inflated prices. Horrible customer service, as the customer doesn't come first. They are only about the bottom line. DONT SHOP HERE!!!!!!!!

  • Shane Stricker

This store is a godsend, especially if you just need a few pieces or parts. The prices are very fair, the service is friendly, and the place has every nut, bolt, and gizmo you can imagine.

  • Deri Bash

Very helpful staff, open on Saturday! Carried replacement part for furnace motor so that I could complete DIY repair on the weekend and get the furnace up and running again.

  • Jonathan Brush

Don't be fooled by the negative reviews, this is the best hardware store in Portland. Ankeny Hardware has just about every tool or spare appliance part you could ever need.

  • Ken Peterson

Outta sight prices. They charged me $90 for a furnace part that costs $21 online. But it was cold outside so I had to pay or the wife and kids would get grumpy. Not cool.

  • M Garzotto

I love this place! This is by far my favorite hardware store in all of Portland. The staff and owner are caring and considerate. It is a pleasure to visit there.

  • Jonathan Salmon

I love going to Ankeny Hardware. Those dudes are weird and fun! This is not a Home Depot. Expect to spend some time there. Things are run kinda old school there.

  • Joshua Fingert

Extremely nice, helpful and knowledgeable. Even when busy, it was made sure that I had everything I needed. They had the exact dual run capacitor for my A/C!

  • Adam Becker

The best Owners from the area and seems to know everybody A wild amount of stuff in stock considering the size of the store Always friendly and helpful A gem

  • GW Grigg

Very helpful, has many "hard to find parts - for retail customers", parts such as HVAC capacitor(s) - in stock!!! Definitely acquired another customer.
