I am often asked: “How many coffees do you drink a day?” Well, there are days, even weeks without a single coffee. But, there are also days I drink 20 to 50 cups. Today was a day with PLENTY of super tasty coffees, because the place looked sleek, the staff was friendly, and the coffee menu was outstanding: I had arrived at BLACK VICE COFFEE, in the heart of Hurstbridge in the beautiful Shire of Nillumbik on the border to the Yarra Valley. I found a beautiful café with lots of natural materials paired with modern furniture, high-end equipment and a young and passionate team. Now let’s have a look at my order: 1. One flat white with LUXX blend 2. One coffee flight [HOLY TRINITY blend] 3. One Double Espresso Costa Rica The flat white with the LUXX blend was a fruit bomb : tropical fruits and berries. The espresso cut perfectly through the milk, which gave a very smooth mouthfeel and high sweetness . Looking at the three coffees inside this blend, explained everything: : Volcan Azul - Natural : San Cayetano - Red Honey : Tolima Microlot - Natural What’s better than an outstanding Gesha? A blend of three of course! : Hector Belalcazar - Washed : Einar Ortiz - Washed : Shady Bader - Carbonic Maceration This line-up in the coffee flight was another special treat: in the cup, this blend tasted clean and transparent, sweet and juicy – especially in the filter and the espresso. This coffee shines thanks to the delicate yellow stone fruits notes and the crisp acidity. The third coffee, a double single origin espresso, was another intense fruit bomb: Volcan Azul – Natural. It is a coffee, that I have already purchased myself as a green coffee buyer. I love this coffee for its intense sweetness. Of course, I also had to eat something: I enjoyed the Bacon Benedict, and to round up my experience I went for a pistachio cup cake… As you can imagine: I WAS PERFECTLY CAFFEINATED.
We were pretty excited to try this place, after reading all the good reviews. But we were unusually disappointed when we made it there for some brunch. I can't comment on the food (the kitchen wasn't open on a Tuesday at 9am). The coffee was good. It was the service that shocked us this particular morning. There were literally more staff working than customers in the cafe. Yet, somehow, the staff took almost 20 minutes to take our order. We were sat a table, and waited 10 minutes - watching the table next to us (the only other customers) getting VIP service - before deciding to go up to order from the staff member who'd been chatting at the till the whole time. On the way to the till, another staff member told me to sit down and they'd be with us soon. We waited at least another 7 minutes (while the same employee kept the VIP treatment going for the table next to us). Seeing a group of cyclists about to order take aways, we decided to give up on the table service and try to order at the till again. The same staff member saw this, said he'd forgotten about us (literally only 2 tables to worry about in the whole cafe), didn't apologise, and finally someone came to take our order - almost 20 minutes after we sat down in the almost empty cafe. I'd hate to imagine the service if the cafe was in full swing with patrons at every table at such a large venue.
Worst coffee experience and management I have ever experienced. Ordered a skinny latte to have with my breakfast which came out Luke warm at best. I asked the lovely waitress to take it back and she offered to get it remade extra hot. I said I don’t want an extra hot coffee, just one at normal temperature to which she replied no worries. The next coffee came out which was so hot it burnt my tongue. The waitress asked if the coffee was better to which I replied no, that it had burnt my tongue. She apologised and said she would take it off the bill. I went in to pay when we were finished and the waitress apologised again and took the coffee off the bill which I thanked her for. Then when I was leaving, the owner, who is the barista, said to another waitress loud enough for me to hear, that woman sent her coffee back because it was only warm so I sent her out an extra hot latte. I turned and said I didn’t order an extra hot coffee and they just both put their heads down. I am so utterly disappointed in his attitude and the way he dealt with the situation, this had become our favourite weekend brekky spot and we had also brought a lot of our friends and family to have their generally great coffee but after this experience we definitely will not be back.

Me and hubby went there to grab some breakfast. We asked to sit at our usual table. The waitress said we couldn’t sit there because there was 2 of us. It’s a table to 4. Then she sat us down at a 2 seater. Then minutes later she asked us if we can move to the table at the wall. Because they needed our table to put it together to put 4 people on it. We looked in dismay thinking what on earth was going on. Then the original table where we were rejected to sit originally. The one that supposedly needed four people. 2 people walked in and they put them at that table. We found that discriminating. Then the waitress kept harassing us with saying what have you chosen yet. Mind you this happened a few times that it was getting annoying. As she didn’t even give us time to decide. Told her we weren’t ready yet. Then when she left. We walked out. The final straw was seeing only 2 people on that table after they rejected us. I believe they were locals and that’s why. We traveled a fair distance to come to that restaurant as we went there in the past. But the service has changed. And it’s not like it used to be. Terrible service. Won’t be going back there again.

In 13 years of having lived at least 3 in every part of Melbourne, I must say this was the best breakfast I have had hands down. A lot to places have chilli scrambled eggs on their menu, but fail to understand what flavours to add to said combo of chilli and egg. These eggs were just different. The flavours ran through every part of it and every bite was just a spectacular explosion that would subside rather quickly too. The real deal is the coffee, but that almost goes without saying. It's a no brainer. I'd liken the coffee to that of Aucuba coffee Roasters in South Melbourne, which ought to please both the most hipster of hipsters as well as the general population. Going back to the food though, the hash brown, awesome. My wife had the smashed avo and loved it as well. Most of the people were either ordering some sort of beef brisket thing or the fritters with Halloumi. Based on their ordering of those 2 dishes and the fact that both my wife and my food were fantastic, I'd say a place nailing 4 dishes in itself is rather impressive. Apart from that, the place is beautiful and the staff are lovely. I'll be making this a worth while detour on my way to work every morning from now on. Very happy to see something like this in the area. Good job guys.
I didn't have any food this time, just coffee, but the menu looks great. Now the Hurstbridge trail is complete, start off with a coffee at Black Vice, and work your way back to Eltham, on to Greensborough, and then onto the city. They have some interesting coffees here, a lot of different processes, and more premium varietals. My espresso was good, but I really enjoyed my milky coffee. It was like a tropical smoothie. It was made with the luxx blend. They have a solid selection of retail here. Feel free to ask the team, the Baristas know their stuff. Their house blend is Hurstbridge, but the luxx blend is also on the bar. It's nice to see a cafe like this in the area. The space is large, with plenty of seating, both indoor and outdoor. I'll be back before another ride down the creek.

Serious coffee connoisseurs would be delighted by a visit to this iconic small batch coffee roaster, operating from the old bakery premises in Hurstbridge. Friendly, attentive staff, passionate & educated about coffee. We enjoyed a single origin espresso and latte combination - ideal if you’d like to experience the extraordinary pure taste of your coffee bean. The setting was relaxed and our brunch was tasty and well presented. Even the barista popped past to explain our coffee and their roasting techniques. We thoroughly enjoyed: Smashed avocado, whipped feta, pistachio dukkah, blood orange puree, grapefruit on multigrain with poached egg + Istra bacon Roasted Cauliflower Salad with brocollini, kale, house-made almond 'hummus, avocado, soy pepitas & puffed rice with miso-lime dressing. We’ll be back for sure!!!

Don’t let the entrance mislead you as it needs a little TLC. However, as soon as you walk through the doors and step inside the energy and vibe is spot on. Service was fantastic and very helpful with making food and coffee choices. We had delicious fried chicken burgers with 10/10 crunchy fries and the green mango/papaya salad that was on the speicals board was so fresh and full of flavour! the coffee was incredibly delicious and clearly made by a very competent and well versed barista. Great experience. Highly recommend stopping in for lunch and/or coffee!

I wish I’d taken some photos- gorgeous little space, open and airy. Stepping away from the dingy closed in cafes the trend seems to be clinging to. So much open space yet somehow not echoey and raucous. We only stopped by for take away coffees but I wish we’d been able to stay for some of the delicious food we saw coming out. We were served efficiently and promptly with a wonderful smile and pleasant attitude. Super polite and easy to talk to. The younger girl that served me could easily offer some tips to some other cafes I’ve been too. Delightful experience and water brought straight out for our dog despite us only getting take away. Will definitely be back. Thanks for the nice experience on our road trip.
Black Vice was the last cafe I visited before Melbourne's first lockdown and it remained front of mind for 18 months. It was only natural that it was the first cafe I returned to after Lockdown 6, this morning. Every trip here is a pleasure, but this morning's visit is best described as simply joyous. The service here is unmatched anywhere in Melbourne. The staff are so wonderfully welcoming, enthusiastic, professional and genuinely invested in each customer's experience. Food and coffee as good as it ever was, delivered with a smile and prepared to perfection. Our visit this morning was the perfect celebration of our impending freedom. Thank you so, so much.
First time at this café. Had meaning to go after reading all the positive reviews plus any place that roasts coffee always piques my interest. I had the blueberry hot cakes and their Colombian single origin Maria Lopez. Can't fault either. The staff are great and the atmosphere is on point. No need to put up with traffic or public transport to get into a Brunswick or Collingwood café when you have a better menu and vibe in the tranquility of Hurstbridge.

What a gorgeous little cafe hidden away in Hurstbridge, a lovely little town. The train station is nearby so it's easy to get here via public transport. The food was delicious, staff really friendly and prompt and the outdoor seating area was under cover and quite comfortable. I would recommend the Bacon Benedict, the bacon was thick cut, eggs runny as it should be over a yummy potato rosti. The Hollandaise sauce had the right amount if acidity and creaminess too. My partner ordered the burger and asked for a double patty, which they happily obliged. One patty is enough though as Black Vice is quite generous. Will definitely come back here again.
Have been waiting to visit Black Vice for ages and it did not disappoint! We sat outside after a ride and loved everything. We loved the staff and their friendly and engaged service, the menu has so many yummy and healthy options that are presented so attractively and taste amazing. I'm really impressed with their dedication to coffee and mostly their dedication to not apologising for selling their sensational variety of beans and blends at prices that will actually support the farmers who supply them. I loved the Luxx in milk! We will definitely be coming back for their new Friday night dinners and for dates in the future!! Thanks team
Black Vice is our favourite weekend lunch spot in Hurstbridge! The staff are so lovely and go above and beyond to make sure we are comfortable. We have a 6 month old and cafes are hard to come by that are so family friendly. The kids scrambled eggs is super cute and our little one is always happy! Our favourites is the eggs Benny and cheeseburger. It’s the place to be! Thanks once again for looking after us feel part of the family :)

Super busy place! Decent coffee but service staffs were too busy to be attentive. Have to check in 3 times for an order of Banana bread. By the time we finished our sandwich and drinks, banana bread is still nowhere in sight! Given up, request for to go! Turned up dry and tasteless for overly heat up!!! Disappointed..

So lucky to have this local. Amazing set up and interior design for back when we were able to dine in. The best coffee in the area by a country mile and they sell it fresh so you can brew at home also. Super friendly staff and owners who have adjusted amazingly well given the unique circumstances with covid. The new burger range for takeaway is delicious. I hope the pulp fiction burger is on the menu to stay - it's one of the best burgers I've ever tasted! These guys have a creative and diverse menu and basically anything they put their hands on is gold. My favourite local.
We had a great time at Black Vice. We sat outside with our dogs, warmed by a gas heater and we were very cosy. The service was great, the food was great and the coffee was especially great. They roast their own coffee at Black Vice and have an amazing selection to choose from including some unusual flavours. Going inside to pay, we could feel the great atmosphere and we look forward to sitting inside to experience this next time.

Very disappointed with the lack of flexibility with the menu considering they have on it build your own. Not too hard to leave off the avocado you’d think but no can’t do that and no can’t add a sprinkle of dukha on your eggs. My waitress was amazing and very embarrassed with the kitchens attitude. 10am sitting and not busy. Table of 4 won’t be back especially when the manager tries to blame the waitress . NOT IMPRESSED

Sat outside in the shaded alfresco area for a delicious lunch. Great food, beautiful surrounds. Had the Korean fried chicken burger which was succulent and perfect for those who love a bit of spice. Indulged with some dessert, including house made tiramisu. Great selection of quality baked goods with some house made and some bought in. Perfect spot for lunch after a ride or run to Hurstbridge along the DC trail! Will be back.

Coffee is very good, and so is the food but with one caveat: portions are small, which makes the higher than average prices seem even more so. (Note: no lactose free milk available). The "coffee-rubbed" burger was fine, but not discernibly different from a regular burger - and it was on the small side. The setting is nice with plenty of seating indoor and under a large covered outdoor area.

Sign says wait to be seated and the cafe pretty empty but we waited long time for a rude staff member to snarl we could sit at empty table. Got our own menus, went in and looked at cakes etc. staff deliver food to other table and ignored us for good 5 minutes. This used to be good but lack of customers should be telling you something!! Went elsewhere! Plenty of other cafes in Hurstbridge

Left without ordering, limited choice on menu and waitress was very rude and stated that the chicken in the burger will be pink, hope you are ok with that!, asked whether we can have 1 vegetable item removed from the burger (for the kids), said no changes allowed. Have read other reviews on this and for the owner reading this, happy to support local businesses, hope feedback like this helps improve the quality of your staff .
Have dined here before, lovely food and coffee. Came in on a Saturday & have had the most off-putting experience with the staff. Can understand wanting to close early on a slow day, but super poor communication - abrupt and rude until I clarified that it’s an hour before the scheduled closing… I was glad to know there was some rationale for being treated like an inconvenience for visiting the business ♀️
Incredible artisan coffee menu and delicious quality food. I was impressed by how knowledgeable the staff were in each of the coffee varieties, clearly they hire staff who are passionate about coffee. It's expensive, but you really do get what you pay for. Potential visitors should note that some of the brews here might not be what their palette is used to, let the staff recommend something to your taste!
The food was good but a bit expensive. Great vibe, though with very large outdoors area. Huge kudos for all the bike racks. It made my experience cycling here all the way from Hawthorn even more pleasant. Thank you.

Great find on the way back to Melbourne. The set up and decor is on point, and the atmosphere make you feel warm and welcome. They have there own roastery on site. The menu had great options I had the house baked ginger loaf and my husband had the freshly baked waffles. Presentation of food was great and the taste was perfection. The coffee was aromatic and great tasting Service was above par ☺
Interesting experience here. Lovely store that roasts its own coffee with very friendly staff. Unfortunately, none of the coffee (at least to me) tastes like coffee. To put it another way, this is craft beer to a VB drinker... As it's super fancy coffee from around the world it's appropriately expensive. So if your palate is firmly in the realm of standard coffee maybe grab a beer here instead.
Black Vice is well worth a regular visit if you live within, say...1,000 kilometres. I have found the food to be fantastic - every time - and the staff to be super knowledgeable, efficient and friendly - every time. Add a beautiful fitout, location and passion for coffees that is very rare (including an extensive and evolving coffee menu), and you're every chance of spending a lot of time here!
Serves great coffee with many varieties offered. The soy hot chocolate is good too. The Lindt Chocolate brownie is super chocolaty and not too sweet and they do a good range of toasted sandwiches as well as meals. Very cycle friendly destination.

We had a delicious lunch here. I had beef, hash browns and poached eggs, with delicious chilli jam. My friend had salad with beef and was seriously impressed. The coffee is excellent. The people were friendly and helpful. A minor disappointment was the berry slushy - too icy for me. We finished off with a slice of German Apple Cake and that was moist and tasty too. Highly recommended.
Exceptional service - immediately on arrival we were welcomed by name and made to feel very relaxed. Food & atmosphere were excellent - chilli eggs a definite winner if you like it hot. Will certainly visit again - well done Nina you are an asset.

Waitress out front was quite rude and pushy. Handed us menu and asked us straight away if we were ready to order even before my partner sat down went of in a huff when we said no and then ignored us for ten minutes deliberately when we were one of two tables occupied only and trying to get her attention all the while. Place looks nice but im not going back
Fantastic place, hidden in one of the more remote suburbs. Attention to detail is excellent. Coffee snobs will enjoy the specialty blends. Foodies will like the variety and presentation. Quality overall excellent. Staff wonderful. The owner/manager added a very special touch. Personal touch, with no BS. Can’t recommend this place more highly. Go for it.
Coffee is the star here. Choices of coffee on offer is exceptional. We also tried burger and miso glazed eggplant with wild rice. Burger was good but eggplant was disappointing. The eggplant tasted undercooked and had raw taste. Also the idea of sweet miso didn’t go well for me. But will want to try their other dishes which looks interesting.

Food was nice and outdoor area pleasant on a sunny winter’s day BUT I didn’t appreciate the hidden piece of brown avocado at the bottom of my cauliflower and broccoli salad which was otherwise delicious. Loved the crispy bits of puffed rice. And coffee good and menu nicely varied. The pistachio and raspberry cake was really nice as well.
Had lunch yesterday with my daughter - so delicious! We chose the salads and they did not disappoint. Fresh, bright and different! Cold brew coffee to take away after eating under the gazebo capped off a perfect experience. Will definitely return, not only for the food and coffee but also the polite and friendly staff. Highly recommend!
Surprisingly well made coffee. Caffeinate me option should be a standard. Huge range of beans selections. Well desciptioned. Easy to understand. Presentation is beautiful. Food option is simple and focused. Reasonable price. A bit pricey for the location may be. Worth a return: Yes.

Black Vice came out of lockdown sprinting with amazing staff service, great dishes and a wonderful atmosphere. The dishes are absolutely delicious and pair well with their beverages. Delicious food, we had the chili scramble for the second time, never disappoints! Love the outside area, so handy when you have a little one who likes to wander! Chantelle/Shantel I think her name was is sooo sweet and friendly! Even when it is super busy she is helpful and such a pleasure to be around! We will be back …
Great place. From the moment I walked in I was greeted with a smile in a warm yet modern barn-style place. The coffee was spot on. I even noticed the barista weighing each serve of coffee to make sure is perfect. The eggs Benedict with salmon were delicious. The apple was a bit of a twist but good in the end. Recommended
A bit disappointed with the service. There are bike racks out the front of the shop but as a cyclist we were not made to feel welcome. We had the option of sitting on a bar stool or a crate, rather than a table - they would not split bills if we sat at a table. Prices were expensive. The food and coffee was ok.
Great coffee. No, excellent coffee. Food was tasty too. Try the burger, it tastes properly home made and was nicely balanced. The only thing that brought it down a star was the way the outdoor mist system is set up. It was more like a sprinkler than a mist! Iced coffee for reference, great on a hot day.

New outdoor area is fabulous! Family friendly and excellent staff and service. Locky (the owner) is rad and took the time to stop and have a chat with us after we complemented the food. Can’t go past the soba noodle salad! Order it STAT!
Great place for a quick bite. Very friendly and approachable staff. Delicious food and excellent coffee. I had the Fried Chicken burger on toasted brioche with slaw and chips. It was gorgeous. They will definitely be seeing more of me..
I have been coming here for the the last 6 months for takeaway coffee but today was my first dine in experience. I'm obsessed with the fitout here, a tonne of thought and consideration has gone into the layout and materials used, truly
Nice atmosphere, clean, parking across the street in the public car park is a quick walk. Friendly service and nice food. Will definitely return to try the coffee hamburger pattie. We had breakfast, and the eggs were perfectly poached.
Perfect pit stop after riding up and down Kinglake. Great food, bicycle parking and spacious seating

Absolutely delicious burger and good coffee!!!! Great fit out. Really kind service - we arrived when they had no power and they allowed us to eat and trusted us to pay electronically as soon as we were able.
Super delicious food, really good coffee. Pretty pricey, but that's the way of the world these days. Nice to sit inside or out. Highly recommended.

Highly recommend. Great service. Great coffee - check out the special coffee menu! I had the gnocchi, friend had the steak sandwich but lots of other choices including all day breakfast options.
Very impressed with the customer service we received today. We popped in for a bite on our motorbike ride, and got looked after extremely well. This place will be on our list more often now!
Wowsers what a find! A 2 page coffee menu. Enough said.

Nice place with a warm casual feel about it. Food was nice & staff friendly. However next time I will ask for my coffee to be a little hotter, it was borderline on warm. More
