I took my cat in for a routine check-up, as I had just moved to the area and wanted to have a vet clinic close to home in case I needed to bring her in for an emergency. I was quite pleased with the attitude of the staff on hand, the layout of the area, and the attention Dr. Schell paid to my cat, as well as the way she treated my cat while she was in for her visit. These, however, are all things that are basic necessities for a vet clinic, and though I went in for a routine check, it became apparent quite quickly that they do like to make money off of extra services. Not that this is a bad thing, of course- but offering aromatherapy, wanting to schedule my cat (who was 5 years old at the time and perfectly mobile) for acupuncture, doing glaucoma testing, trying to push me into getting respiratory tests, blood tests, screening for feline herpes and etc. Though I only have the one cat and she will not come into contact with other cats. It just seemed a bit much, and I had already made it clear that I just wanted a routine check-up, not to pursue a massive amount of extra tests when there was absolutely no indication she needed them. They were constantly advertising for the catnip and other holistic products they had, which is great- I like that they have that stuff to offer, however, I felt like I was at a mall and that I had stopped too close to a kiosk and was now being harassed into buying or trying this product or that product. The vet insisted that she put some essential oils on my cat and I begrudgingly agreed, though my cat has never been around anything like that in her life. They also pushed and insisted and nearly scheduled my cat for a dental cleaning- printed out a total estimate for all the tests and costs of the anesthesia and threw on a tonne of additional tests that I eventually pared down by saying "Is this necessary, or is this necessary" in order to find out exactly how many of those tests were mandatory in order for her to have a dental cleaning. There were several tests they slipped onto the bill that had absolutely nothing to do with the dental cleaning. This I do not appreciate; though my cat means the world to me, I am not going to get additional tests done if there is absolutely no reason for them to be done. This causes more stress. The worst thing that happened, and the reason for the low rating, was the fact that the tools they used to check my cat's eyes caused her to have a bad eye infection just days after her visit. The next day her eye was a bit weepy and the day after that the poor creature was miserable and I took her straight back. She is not around other cats, her home environment had not changed, and I strongly believe that she picked up the infection while having her eyes checked at the vet clinic. Of course, Dr. Schell went from fawning over my cat to becoming extremely defensive and saying there was no way my cat could have picked up an eye infection there...But it's like when people go to a doctor's office- other people there are sick and have contagious germs- you're all the more likely to pick up something at a doctor's office because of the concentration of ill people that are bound to be there. I was very displeased that they denied the fact that my cat picked up an eye infection there and still charged me the full amount for both the additional visit AND the two bottles of eye drops as well as pills. Naturally, I paid for them because I wanted my cat's treatment to begin as soon as possible, but I am still quite certain she got the eye infection there, and the vets did not apologize, nor did they accept even the possibility that she could have picked up the infection there. Not best pleased, and will not go back. I do acknowledge that the staff were sweet, the place looks nice, and apart from the infection, it was an alright visit- however, not accepting responsibility for an animal's illness and refusing to apologize or help treat an animal whose health was compromised by their clinic was unacceptable. I will not be going back to this vet clinic.
To preface this review, I’d like to acknowledge that the frontline staff of this clinic are caring, enthusiastic, and helpful. If I was rating the reception team alone, it would score 5/5. I would rate value for money a 3/5 as this clinic easily charges 10-20% more than other Calgary small animal practices (I suppose maintaining a Porsche ain’t cheap). However, even after my experience 11 months ago, I still feel infuriated and hurt by Dr Schells’ written and spoken words. We took our 10 year old golden retriever, Keisha, for ultrasounds and she had a tumour on her spleen which was most likely canine splenic hemangiosarcoma. While there was a (small) chance that it was benign, needle aspirates are usually too dangerous and non-diagnostic to be of use; histology testing would be needed to be sure. I was quoted that the removal of the spleen is $5k and if it’s malignant, it’s $7-10k for chemo. I received quotes from other clinics that were a fraction of Bow Bottoms estimates, but Dr Schell insisted she was the only qualified vet to perform the surgery. I asked for palliative care options as Keisha didn’t tolerate anesthesia for her minor periodontal surgery. It took her a month to recover from that procedure when she was fully healthy. We didn’t want to see her suffer from the side effects of another surgery, let alone chemotherapy. In the last email Dr Schell sent, she suggested I surrender my dog to a rescue society to have her rehomed if I didn’t pay the $13,000 for splenectomy and chemotherapy . This is a dog I raised, trained and loved from when she was 8 weeks old…if you doubt my financial commitment, I paid $6000 THAT year alone on medical expenses to enhance our dog’s quality of life. Keisha was my best friend and the thought of her in a new environment without her family for the last months of her life still brings me to tears. Needless to say, we went to a better vet that provided compassionate care. Keisha had a wonderful last half year before she told me it was time to cross the rainbow bridge. She departed peacefully surrounded by the people who loved her unconditionally for over a decade. To Julie Schell: please be advised that your verbal and written conduct was not professional. I felt chastised for conducting my own literature review and questioning some of your treatments, such as herbal medicines. Moreover, your emotional manipulation to upsell clients on additional services is distasteful. Truthfully, I am not shocked by any of the stories posted by other negative reviewers. Please be aware that I did call the Alberta Veterinary Association and spoke to the deputy registrar in charge of complaints. Specifically, we discussed the ethics of your practice and emotional manipulation of people that want to do the best for their animals. I didn’t believe it was worth the time, energy or effort to pursue the complaint process. If others reading this review have valid reason to issue a formal complaint, simply Google ABVMA and scroll to the office of the registrar. My intent on writing this review is to assist other pet owners in taking agency of their animal companions health. You have the right to seek second opinion, and to advocate for what is best for your animal(s). I know I cherish the last few months I had with Keisha, and I’m still shocked a vet would recommend separating a senior dog with canine splenic hemangiosarcoma from their family. Please note that I have all of my vet bills, quotes for treatment and email correspondence to refute the common “you’re not a client” response to negative reviews.
I've waited a couple weeks to write this, as I wanted to be sure it wasn't just my emotions reacting. I also was hoping management/the owner would contact me to discuss this privately, but after a few attempts and no response from anyone, here we are. And before they respond that 'my name is not in their system', I am well aware of that, but this review is certainly for BOW BOTTOM VET in Deer Run/Valley/Ridge. My husband is on file. Our cat was horrifically injured after being hit by a car. He was rushed to Bow Bottom Vet as they were the closest to us. Right away they informed us they could not help, his injuries were too severe, and we needed to go to VCA for help. Somehow though, we were still charged FIVE HUNDRED ($500) DOLLARS. My husband and our neighbor (he came to help) were there for less than 10 minutes! We were charged $181 for a ‘Special Consultation Fee’ – almost $200 to tell us you can’t help and we need to go elsewhere? Another $192 for ‘Oxygen Therapy – set up & 1st hour’ – the cat was breathing fine and was fighting the oxygen mask. Why are you attempting to give him oxygen when he is obviously breathing and you just said you can’t help, we need to go to emergency. Also charged $43.25 for an injection (pain medication) and an additional $51 for treatment room materials. I appreciate them giving him pain medication and bandaging his wounds for transport to the hospital and I completely understand those charges. I am just baffled at the other costs though. We actually showed the bill to the other Veterinarian and they had NO IDEA why there was an attempt to give him oxygen. To add insult to injury, for some reason later that evening, Bow Bottom Vet called and was attempting to explain and justify the charges. It was ‘standard procedure’ what we were being charged. We had literally just euthanized our pet an hour before, and they for some reason felt it appropriate to call and justify their actions. The lack of compassion was disgusting. The fact that we were also charged almost $200 for the doctor to say they can’t help, go elsewhere, is mind boggling to me. Not only that, my injured cat and husband had to wait in the car for our neighbor to pay, before they could speed off for emergency care. Time was precious, so the bill was just paid so they could carry on to emergency care. What’s done is done, and unfortunately my cat was put to rest. It was actually cheaper to have him euthanized, cremated, AND a clay paw print done at VCA. I am writing this to hopefully prevent someone else getting robbed by Bow Bottom Vet in their desperate time of need. Their actions that afternoon, the callous call later that evening, and their lack of response/communication with me after, is absolutely gut-wrenching to me. It sickens me to think a practice that operates like this, is caring for animals. PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE FOR ANY SORT OF EMERGENCY! THEY CANNOT HELP YOU AT ALL, BUT WILL STILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR SITUATION.
We’ve been going to Dr. Schell for over a decade now. She and her staff are wonderful. They always make sure to present us with all our options and take the time to explain things to us clearly. Even when I am having a mini meltdown. We have been rather unlucky with our animals so they have each required at least a few unplanned vet visits a year. This can often be a stressful time for us and our pets but the Staff members aren’t only incredible people that clearly really care about their patients they regularly go above and beyond to make sure they are taken care of and we feel comfy. I ask a lot of questions and always receive full professional answers. The clinic is responsive to both phone calls, and emails. They also send email reminders and text reminders. Dr Schell has proven time and time again to be knowledgeable, often armed with multiple solutions to a problem. Many times over the years she has told me about courses she had recently attended often gushing about the new things she learned. This always reenforces our decision to stay with Dr Schell even after we moved out of the area. She has been A practicing vetranarian for years but continues to stay up to date and informed on new information and procedures. I also like that when she doesn’t know the answer to something she is upfront about it and plans how to attack the issue. She has high expectations of both herself and her staff. She is also great with our animals. Our cat seems to like her, she even sometimes doesn’t glare at dr Schell (that’s a major win). She cares so much about her patients and goes above what is expected for them. Example, when my cat was diagnosed with kidney failure she called me one Sunday to see if I had questions, what I thought about trying a new medication. Anyway we were on the phone 1.5 hours. The Sunday part is important as her clinic is closed on Sunday’s and that’s her day off. And stupid me didn’t realize that until I was off the phone. I felt bad keeping her as long as I did, but not once did I get the feeling she was rushing me. The clinic has almost 0 turn over at the front desk and with Techs this not only tells me that she probably treats her staff well, and pays decently but it also ensures that I am very rarely dealing with someone New that doesn’t understand my animals. This means I can 100 percent trust the advice that the techs give me. The clinic is also involved with charity by runing a silent auction every Christmas to raise money for a charity that helps people pay life saving vet bills here in Alberta. It’s always nice to see small businesses involved with community charity. Some people on here have mentioned that the clinic is rather pricey. They can be more expensive then other clinics But from my perspective the slightly higher costs are worth the services and knowledge you’ll receive. I know kali and dexter are in the best possible care at this clinic.
We had some family issues that took us to Arizona for a couple of weeks. After a week of being home we noticed that our 14 year kitty had lost a lot of weight and then she started howling. I contacted our regular vet but they said they were overwhelmed and the following week would be better to see our cat. I chose to take my kitty to Bow Bottom vet “hospital” just to find out what was wrong. They had a closed door policy at the time due to Covid they told me (although Calgary had lifted all restrictions) and so I went home to wait for the call. When the vet called she said “thank you for bringing this beautiful creature to me”. She then asked what we fed her, and before I could finish saying the brand the vet said “promise me that will only buy food from me for the next 25 years of this cats life. Our kitty was 14. She offered to do all kinds of tests that didn’t fit our budget and I told her to please just do a blood test to start with. When she called back again she said that the blood test revealed a serious kidney issue and our kitty needed urgent care. She said she could arrange to have our pet picked up and taken to urgent care. When I asked how much that would be she told me $5k to $7k. Way out of the budget!! I asked her if I could just pick up my kitty and take her to our own vet. She agreed. A couple of days later a peace officer came to the house and took our kitty. We had not yet had a chance to get her to our regular vet. They eventually put her down but not before they allowed us a goodbye visit. Apparently vets are supposed to give you a choice between urgent care and euthanasia. And if you don’t choose they have to report you to animal services. Apparently that is what happened to us. The vet never once gave us the option of euthanasia nor did she tell us that she would report us for not taking out pet to urgent care immediately. She effectively took our choice away. I will NEVER take another pet there!! And I highly recommend to everyone else to look elsewhere in an emergency situation.
I’m extremely disappointed with the experience I had here yesterday. My senior dog has recently declined in health, I knew it was time to say goodbye after having a healthy and beautiful 13 years together and figured a vet was the place to go to find relief for him. After waiting for over 15 minutes in a small room, Dr. Schell came in seeming a bit flustered. Started asking me all the same questions her two assistants prior had already asked me. After relaying all the symptoms my dog has been experiencing she thought it was best to do a bunch of testing on him, almost $3000 worth instead of humanely laying him to rest. She told me my thinking was “old school” and also said “ya it’s great you love him but with regular check ups we could have avoided much of his health concerns.” At a very tender and difficult time I do not believe she holds the compassion towards animals or their owners. She also didn’t know that there are multiple veterinary services that will come to your home to euthanize your pet if the time calls for it. I came home to find out my neighbour just took her cat here and was told she was a “bad owner” by Dr. Schell. After reading other dissatisfied comments you can safely say she is in this for monetary gain. I hope this can be taken into consideration for the care towards future patients, please know that any decisions about a family member’s healthcare ultimately lies upon the family. Especially during difficult times, patience and understanding will get you a lot further. Oh and not sure if you guys got the memo but Covid restrictions have been lifted…
I’ve been taking my dogs to the Bow Bottom Veterinary Hospital for 15-1/2 years now. What I appreciate most is the care and individualized attention that we receive when we visit (whether for a routine appointment or when more challenging and complex problems arise). I never feel rushed through my appointments; the time is always taken to discuss and thoroughly address my concerns. In fact, on numerous occasions, Dr. Schell has called me long after her clinic is closed to discuss test results, concerns, treatment options, etc., which demonstrates her extraordinary commitment to her clients. Both of my dogs have presented with various complex health challenges over the years, and Dr. Schell always digs in to understand, properly diagnose and recommend the best care options possible. She is in close contact and consults with other veterinary specialists for the more complex health issues, which gives me peace of mind. I’ve also found other staff members to be very welcoming and attentive. I’m greeted with a smile every time, and love and affection is always extended to my dogs. On top of that, I’ve had many discussions with Tracey, Erin and Hannah about the various health issues and challenges my dogs have faced; they listen carefully and with concern, and they offer up tips/advice that are very much appreciated! Overall, there is no doubt in my mind that my dogs are receiving the best care possible.
Bow Bottom Veterinary Clinic has always provided our pets with loving professional care. The staff is knowledgable, helpful and friendly. They have always worked hard to answer our questions, meet our requests, and provide us training in pet care techniques from cleaning teeth to giving injections. Dr. Julie Schell has always been professional, kind, and caring to our dogs. She is very knowledgable and comprehensive in her care. I was amazed by the thorough head to toe health report card she provided us for our dogs after their first appointment with her. She has provided both routine health maintenance care and more extensive specialized chronic disease care to our pets and we trust her completely. If specialized imaging, testing, or Specialist input is required she is able to arrange/provide these services. Our dogs feel very comfortable when they are at her Vet clinic. When we needed specialist care for our older dog we sought out Dr. Schell for her experience with the breed, and we have made her clinic our vet clinic for all of our dogs since meeting her. We travel 3 hours to see her when our pets need her services. Dr. Schell and her staff have always gone above and beyond in their care of our dogs. Thank you for the excellent care!
Dr. Julie Schell is rude and condescending to both her clients and her employees. While she appears to be knowledgeable her sole goal is profit gain. She will keep an animal suffering longer than is needed, pushing the medications and herbal remedies and then ridicules you when/if you disagree with her treatment plan in any way. She talks about the clients, in a rude and negative manner to her staff members, and has been known to get overly corrective with the animals in her care. Not to mention the upwards of a 2 hour wait for a simple exam. I will never be bringing my beloved pet here again, and I advise the same to all possible. Edit to reply: your go-to response to negative reviews is "we've never seen you" - you have in fact seen my animal, and myself as I used to work for Dr. Schell and it was the most awful experience I've ever had. She tried pushing a bunch of unnecessary testing on my kitten who isn't even a year old, and in perfect health. Not to mention what I saw in the back, falling asleep during surgeries?!?!?! Absolutely unacceptable. Also edited my review to 1 star due to your condescending response to my review.
They don't know what they are talking about. I brought my puppy in to get her vaccines and she wanted to know about the rest of the dogs in her litter. I told her that there were 11 puppies and 3 of which were female. The vets response was "that is a lot of testosterone in that uterus." Indicating that I would have an aggressive dog. Well the hormones to maintain pregnancy in dogs is the same as humans, there is no testosterone in the uterus otherwise the female dog would not be a female dog. Male dogs start secreting testosterone after they are born the same way human males do at puberty. She also suggested a muzzle for my dog to make people scared of her, and that just because she has a dark mostly black coat that will make everyone think she is aggressive. (not sure where these ideas come from when I'm looking for a search and rescue dog not a guard dog) They also give vaccines and medications to the extreme that the dog doesn't need (e.g. excessive heart worm pills, lepto - they are the only clinic in Calgary to force that one on all their clients.) They are expensive and do not have the brains to be worth what they charge.
BE AWARE OF SNEAKING CHARGES. had booked in for a first time visit and examination. was told it would be $124 for that first time visit and examination. we had gone to the emerge a month ago because our cats eye was acting up, and had gotten some test done. my partner and i had given the documents to this clinic before we started the first time visit and examination and they were aware of the emerge visit and tests. so the vet comes in the room and starts doing all these test immediately and never talked about price, we had only scheduled for the first time visit. so thinking this is all part of that first time process we think nothing of it. then they slap on all these charges at the end. the service overall was okay but the vet will start working on your pet without disclosing if it is an added cost or not, be aware and make sure you ask lots of questions, i called and complained but they won't offer any money back of course. this post is for new patients, just make sure whatever the vet is about to start doing, ask if it is added cost on the first time visit fee because they will not warn you in advance!
This is probably the best services you will receive in the city. A lot of clinics provide good service but you can tell that Dr. Julie and her staff genuinely care about the animals. This clinic’s main focus is to do what’s best; NOT what’s most profitable. This is why it wasn’t surprising for me to see another client say that they wanted to list Dr Julie as her dog’s god mother. Duchess was in critical condition when she came in to the clinic and the staff took it very seriously and provided us with empathetic care during this heartbreaking experience. Dr Julie contacted a respiratory and heart specialist to ensure that she received immediate care. Unfortunately the other emergency hospital had some hiccups —with sending the animal ambulance— but one of the staff brought us to the hospital with a oxygen tank so Duchess wouldn’t die during transport. Duchess is still in critical care but we needed to leave a review to show our gratitude to Dr Julie and her team. My partner and I will be sending all our friends to this clinic. Thank you for your incredible care.
We have brought our 3 pets (2 dogs and 1 cat) to Dr Schell for almost 9 years and absolutely love the service and care offered. Our pets even love going to see the staff and get treats and cuddles. We have used 2 other vets in the city previously and another boarder and have never 2nd guessed our decision to move to her. Amazing for routine checkups, scheduled procedures, emergency care or injury follow up and even daycare/boarding. The prices are a bit more than other vets, however this has never deterred us. Dr Schell always gives a low (basic) and high (extensive) estimate on any recommended options and has always been very open to dialogue with me when I've sought more information before making a decision. I have never felt pressured or judged to include treatments that I didn't support either. Our youngest dog has much anxiety and behavioral issues and the whole team has been very supportive, helping us figure out a combination between natural and medical remedies as well as training techniques.
I'm only rating five stars in this case because more isn't an option. I find the service at Bow Bottom Veterinary Clinic from Dr. Schell and her staff to be incredible service with lots of attention to detail. They clearly all love animals very dearly and go out of their way to make sure your pets get the attention and care they need. The time the staff spent on each of my visits went beyond my time at their establishment and it shows. Their procedures were all well communicated before I arrived along with timely email reminders and after the visit they've always followed up with email and phone calls to make sure all was well for me and especially for my cat. Dr. Schell always likes to ask a lot of questions about my cats so she knows that they are living happy and healthy lifestyles. I find the prices to be on par with other clinics, but their service is friendlier and of higher quality. I will continue to bring my Cats to Dr. Schell's office because they are that awesome.
Dr. Schell is a credit to health care practioners. Her level of knowledge and expertise is truly astounding, but this pales in comparision to her incredible amount of heart and caring. She took my puppy that has been all but written off by other animal "care" facilities and gave us hope. After spending over $20,000 at CARE and Wester Vet on all kinds of tests, Radiation Therapy, Chemotherapy, meds, etc... all the time being told my abby is only a case for Palliative care. I refused to believe that and have been holding out hope and fighting all on my own, trying different therapies, supplements and more, based on friends recommendations and my own research. Finally, a very good friend recommended I meet with Dr. Schell. I finally feel like someone is on abby's and my side and is going to move heaven and earth to help. What more could you want from someone in the health care field? Thank you Dr. Schell and team. Here's hoping...
It's unfortunate that the majority of reviews are written out of anger and that more people who have had positive experiences don't take a few minutes to praise this amazing clinic! Sadly, it's often the people that don't find any joy in life that press their negative energy onto others. That being said . . . we have received the most AMAZING care from this clinic!! I'm a crazy dog Mom and I have full confidence in every person who works here - I would leave all of my animals in their care without batting an eye, which is a lot to be said. If you're looking for an extremely thorough and caring vet then Dr. Schell is it! Open to alternative therapies as well as traditional, this clinic gives the best of both worlds and I cannot praise them enough!!! They always go above and beyond at Bow Bottom Veterinary Hospital and I'm so thankful for all of the care that they provide!!
Very nice facility, friendly staff, and timely service...but watch the prices. Took our pup in for a final vaccination and had the vet brought him out to me and very urgently/excitedly/worriedly recommend that we immediately book him in for tooth extraction as both new and old k9's were visible. received an email estimate for $1100 that evening and proceeded to cancel the appointment the next day. Took him to another vet and was advised to wait for a couple days - free of charge - and see what happens as nothing catastrophic would happen that quickly. Tooth fell out on what would have been the day of surgery while he was playing with a towel. Over all, good service but as clients; do think for yourselves and apply common sense from time to time.
It was my first time bringing in my cat and the first time experiencing a curb side covid visit. While I hated not being in the room with my cat, they were responsive to calls, messages, and even called me on messenger during the exam. The dr. seemed very nice, the assistants really seemed to care about my cat. I got a new client welcome pack which was incredibly thorough, and I really like that the dr. is in to alternative medicines like accupuncture, massage, chiro, chinese herbs, and essential oils. The herbs helped my cat immediately with her coughing fits. They also caught dental disease that my other vet didn't. I am looking forward to continue using bow bottom as my vet.
sell sell sell and upsell. Julie didn't even bother to learn my dog's name (even though I told her several times).. "buy this, we make it here".... "you need that, we make it here" ... "forget that diet, buy your food here" ..... just awful. Response to clinic reply: no I am not confused nor have I confused your clinic with another; furthermore I don't appreciate the condescending nature of your response or your lack of accountability and humility. Dr. Julie Schell is the vet / owner and she the person I'm speaking of; she is a shark. A true salesperson. And I sincerely feel that she was more interested in her hospitals profit than the health of my dog. Thank you.
This place is brutal. I will NEVER bring my dog here again. They are never able to look at him in a timely fashion. I brought him to have his nails done here and the cut his paw open somehow. I came to pick him up and asked about him bleeding. They denied it being there fault even though there is no was he came in with a bleeding paw before. The best part? They said there was nothing they could do about it! Wouldn't even look at it! Of course they are too busy sitting there doing nothing. Had also brought my dog in for an emergency due to a cut in his rib cage. After waiting 15 minutes to even talk to someone they told me they couldn't help in a very rude manor.
Dr. Schell is so thorough and truly cares about her patients. Our puppy has been seeing her for 2 days and she has already surpassed any expectations we could have had. She takes the time to talk you through anything that might be going on with your fur babies and genuinely wants the best for both the pets and the the pet parents. I am so happy that we chose Bow Bottom Veterinary Hospital as our family vet. I trust Dr. Schell completely and appreciate her dedication. Test results came back for our pup after closing and she still took the time to call and let us know what was going on. I highly recommend Dr. Schell and the wonderful staff at BBVH.
Honestly, my review has nothing to do with the facility per say. I was delivering them food… got no answer via the app. Entered their foyer to leave the food safely. Assuming the door was to be locked as whoever came out was also greeted with a dog. Proceeded to yell at me, Get out very rudely and asking why I’m in the foyer. Based on that interaction I wouldn’t recommend the vet to anyone based on how their staff treat people. If the front doors to be locked have it locked, also maybe if ordering food have specific instructions… not yell at the person who nicely just brought you your food… 20 minutes earlier than the drop off time!
Dr. Schell put so much effort and time into my dogs care, he has never had such a thorough examination before. As a staff member, working at Bow Bottom Veterinary Hospital has been an incredible experience. Dr. Schell cares so much about her hospital and staff, which results in a very mindful and well managed practice. As a VOA & leader within the hospital I would recommend this hospital to anyone looking for a supportive, goal oriented and dynamic practice to flourish your veterinary skills while learning from an incredible doctor.
We recently moved and needed to find a new vet rather suddenly, as my dog was showing concerning symptoms, and I feel fortunate this veterinary hospital is so close to us. I don't think my dog has ever been so calmed by a vet before, and left the office tail wagging even after several diagnostic tests. All the staff were friendly and helpful and I learned some new tips in caring for my dogs needs. I am waiting on results and treatment, but so far their care has been excellent.
Dr. Julie Schell and her amazing staff are the best. They have taken just the best care with both of my puppies, Riley and Charlie. Both have now crossed that Rainbow Bridge (Charlie just yesterday) and the care, love and support that they have shown myself and my boys over the years and through the most difficult of times for me helped more than I can ever say. There aren't enough words to express my utmost love and appreciation for all that they do. Sincerely, Connie Kohut
Dr. Schell and all the staff at Bow Bottom Veterinary Hospital are absolutely fantastic! You'll never meet a more dedicated, passionate, or skilled Vet than Dr. Schell. The enthusiasm displayed by Dr. Schell and her love for animals is readily apparent. We took our beloved Golden Retriever for surgery and couldn't be happier with the care he received. Dr. Schell did an amazing job on a challenging procedure. The staff were all amazing as well. Highly recommend this clinic!
Dr. Julie Schell, and her entire support team, provide excellent, knowledgeable animal care and friendly, welcoming customer service. And you can literally feel how much they all love the animals they care for. My dog has been her client since Sept 2019 and she's in the best shape of her life! Dr. Schell was able to identify and resolve issues my dog had been suffering from for 3 years while seeing other vets. I highly recommend the Bow Bottom Veterinary Hospital!
Easily the best veterinary experience I've ever had. Everything about what was going on and potentially going wrong with my fur baby was explained in detail and not rushed in the slightest. Dr. Schell is one of the most passionate physicians I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. The staff kept me up to date on all testing results and even phoned to make sure the medication was working out and that the patient was doing well. 6/5 to all staff at Bow Bottom Vet.
What a wonderful vet clinic. Dr. Schell has grounded and holistic approach with the animals. She got right down to floor level to meet our cat for the first time and provided a thorough examination. The energy is great in here and there are so many small touches, such as tea and coffee while you wait, lots of indoor plants (high up out of reach of course), and the use of essential oils as an anxiety aid. Would rate ten stars if I could, this place is amazing.
BEWARE! Over charged for every service. Paid for vaccines that it turns out my pet doesn't even need (disease not in Alberta). Guilted and charge out the behind for our dying cat only to be told she would not euthenize until we tried everything (we had already paid $3200 for blood, urine, ultrasound, fluids) - she suggested we run all the blood again 6 days later because results turned up nothing. ABSOLUTELY AWFUL experience. Do not go here!
I don’t think I have enough space to write about how awesome this vet is. Not only did they have a warm welcome towards myself and my mom who came with me, but they treated my cat very well. From the moment you walk in to when you leave, your pet is their priority. The atmosphere is calming, and relaxing. The staff is absolutely wonderful. Thank you Bow Bottom for the excellent service!!! I would highly recommend this vet to anyone!!
We talked to our neighbours before going here and even though they warned us about the BOW BOTTOM 'sales vet' (they WILL try to sell you things you will NEVER need) - we still took our pup there as it was convenient. Even though we declined SEVERAL useless things (like aromatherapy) , they kept INSISTING on these things. It was like going to a used car lot. I would not recommend this place unless the proximity is a must.
Dr. Julie and her staff gave me her full attention and expertly examined Danny and responded quickly to his current needs. Danny is a Yorkie and is having recurrent problems with his teeth. She is proactive and practices preventive medicine. She also understands my financial restrictions. She has a heart for pets and their owners. Thank you, Dr. Julie, and I thank your staff for their excellent care of Danny. Mary K.
Dr. Schell and her staff are phenomenal. We’ve been going there for around 10 years. We had one cat they took phenomenal care of and now with our new kitten we feel extremely comfortable taking him there. And during these times they are taking amazing precautions - coming out to grab your pet, Dr calling right after the appointment and then bringing everything back out to you. Highly recommend
I've had to unfortunately bring two deceased animals to them in the span of 9 months. I can say that even though I've had negative feelings due to the front desk in the past, the staff that took care of my deceased animals were compassionate, patient and understanding. They gave me the time I needed to say my final goodbye, and picked them up with such love as well. Thank you.
We had our 3 month old pup in for his final shot today.. my girlfriend dropped him off because i could not.. the bill was 251.00 mins 80 dollar credit.. unbelievable... he was in for a ac recharge, and got dinged with brake check, oil change and replace air filter.. they just lost a customer..they were wearing masks, but must have had the gun hidden...CROOKS
My two boys : Jack and Jojo has been received the best care since we came to this clinic. The attention to details is beyond my expectation, from nutrition to dog behavior and the report card from annual check up... My Dogs received a way better care than us human. I so happy that we have a clinic this good in Calgary. Dr Schell and her team...Thank you.
This place is amazing, I brought my cat Sylvester there to get a check up. When I got there they put us in a room right away so he could roam around. And boy did he get spoiled there. He had some cat nip, treats, played with some toys. They are so nice, so friendly! I am coming back with my other cat! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
This place is great! Dr. Schell was so wonderful and enthusiastic about the adoption of our new kitten. She and her staff provided so much great information that we need to raise a healthy pet! They were upfront with costs and provided affordable suggestions for upcoming medical care. Im so thrilled to begin our pets medical care with Dr.Schell!
I came in to order a big of food for my pup and the front desk ladies were absolutely so amazing and kind! They made me feel so welcomed and I felt like I’ve known them forever with how friendly they were! Thank you for giving me an amazing experience I’ll definitely be bringing my pup here if I need anything:) keep up the amazing work!:)
Dr Schell, Tracey, McKenzie, everyone is always very helpful and professional. I have a, uh, high maintenance dog, to put it nicely, and he is always so excited to see them, which I think is a good sign. They have always taken great care of him and offered different suggestions for his care. Love this place, definitely would recommend.
We have been coming to Dr Schell for about 10 years, and bring our cat and 2 dogs. The staff are so caring and Dr Schell is so knowledgable. She has tonnes of extra training and I love the holsoyic approach she takes to care. It's not always about pushing medications! We know 100% that our animals are loved when we go in.
Dr.Schell and her staff are amazing. Very attentive to your pets needs, they go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you and your pet needs. From late night phone calls and updates, to follow up post visit. A good balance of vetenary medicine and holistic care. Our pup LOVES the daycare!
Great experience at the clinic! We had our first visit to the clinic today and Dr Julie was fantastic! She showed genuine interest in our pet and gave us a really good primer on pet life in Calgary, as we are new residents. Looking forward to out next visit at Bow Bottom Veterinary Hospital.
I am so happy that I started bringing my dog Koby to Bow Bottom Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Schell is amazing!! The staff are very caring and knowledgeable as well. The facilities are great and the clinic is clean and comfortable. I highly recommend this place.
My appointment with Bow Bottom Veterinary Hospital was to get a second opinion and solution to a long misdiagnosed and untreated illness in my dog. I'm very confident and comfortable with the diagnoses saving time and jump starting a solution. Thank you !
Very welcoming place. I am impressed with how thorough Dr Schell is and I appreciate her approach. Staff are considerate as well. I was recommended this clinic by two different people and I would absolutely recommend to anyone seeking care for their pet.
We love Dr. Schell! She’s passionate and so knowledgeable. She took good care of our last cat, who loved her and lived to be 21.5yrs. All of the staff loved our new adopted 1yo kitty, they gave us lots of info and pointers and treated her so well!
First time at this clinic with our Lab Sasha, felt really taken care of and like we were in great and trustable hands! Sasha was such a happy girl to go into the clinic and this never happens. Thank you for caring for the fur babies of the world.
They were totally awesome with our dog and gave it royal treatment. Like it was their own dog. Extremely friendly and professional handling. Do not look any further, this is the place to bring your pet for the best handling and reasonable rates.
Funny how with every negative review you have you say "your not a client of ours" maybe that's because of the front desk staff. I do not just give one stars. Regardless what happened I will do my best to make sure not to recommend this place.
Always receive the finest care for my boy from this lovely team! Dr Schell provides a plethora of advice and options for both short and long term care for your pet. Would highly recommend to anyone in need of a reliable and trustworthy vet.
Absolutely the WORST place to work or to try and take your Practicum at. They have zero time for training, they cast you aside because your new and still learning. One particular Vet Tech there, Katie, is the biggest and rudest bully I've
I would Highly recommend! Everyone at the clinic is so amazing! And Cash likes his visits to the vet ! The vet listened to all my questions and made sure I got answers . Cash was also treated for all his problems! Thank you so much !!!!
Dr Julie and her staff have been in contact with me to get Jack's seizures figured out. Dr Schell is very kind, caring and through with options and respect for budgets...so that we can do the best for our loved one. Thank you Dr Schell.
We have been taking our pets here for nearly 5 years. Dr. Schell and every member of her team treat our pets (2 cats and 1 dog) with such care and respect. They go above and beyond to expectations. We highly recommend Bow Bottom Vet!
Heard nothing but terrible things about the vet that owns this practice. Have never stepped inside this clinic but throughout the talks of the community would highly recommend staying far away. Travel a distance for proper vet care.
This is an extremely good veterinary hospital. I also board my pet there, worry free! Dr. Schell is very knowledgeable, and she cares so much about the pets and their family. The staff are great. I highly recommend this clinic!
Super knowledgeable, friendly and informative. We have just adopted a rescue dog and I love the way the vet set up a list of what needed to be done so we could then make a plan to get our puppers to his best self. …
The vet was amazing. I feel like she gave my cat and I her full attention. I'm grateful for the treatment she was able to provide for my cat's emergency situation. She was knowledgeable, caring, and treated my cat like family.
Dr. Schell is exceptional. She goes above and beyond to ensure the care of our dog. Our case is complicated, and the Dr regularly consults with experts in the field to make sure we're doing the best we can for our doggo.
Most amazing Vet and staff I have ever met. Holistic approach and other natural alternatives available. Everything is explained and prices laid out up front. I cannot say enough great things about this place!!!
I love Dr. Schell and all the technicians at Bow Bottom Vet. I have three furry kids and the team at Bow Bottom have taken care of them with so much love and care. I highly recommend Dr. Schell and her team.
Wow! Dr Julie Schell is really something special when it comes to loving and caring for animals. We went there for the first time with our cat and will never go anywhere else from now on. Highly recommend!
For the best veterinary care for your pet, for the most compassionate staff, and for the most comprehensive care plan, your pet deserves the best and you will find all the above delivered with a smile!
Great service and very welcoming team for the first visit for my new pup! Careful though Google maps had a slightly wrong address but was close so we figured it out! Would highly recommend this place.
Great service and the customer care was top notch. Took very good care of my dog buddy and me as well. Good prices considering that it's never cheap to go to the vet at any time of the day.
I’ve been using this vet for a few years now and I must say this vet is awesome! The staff are so friendly same with the Vet! So helpful and have lots of product on hand! Highly recommend!
Great people working here and you can tell they really care, they give multiple options for work to complete. Daycare, boarding and vet all in one place which is really convenient.
Dr. Shell and the team are excellent. My cat and dog always gets top care here and they take the time to ensure everything is going well. Even get follow up phone calls.
They took excellent care of my kitties for over 20 years. An amazing group of people, and Dr Schell is completely invested in her patients and their care. Five paws.
As an Expat I traveled a lot my my cat on the 5 continents. Dr Schell is from far one of the best vet that i take care of Miloune. I'm following all her advise!
They were so kind to my anxious puppy and his first Vet experience was amazing! Lovely staff and very understanding of all situations, highly recommended!
This is hands down the best vet in the city. Believe me, I’ve checked. A thorough, science based approach with a holistic backdrop. Well done.
Acupuncture on animals? Are you crazy? Not proven, this vet also uses aromatherapy which can be toxic. Avoid at all costs
They have always taken the best care of our pets anyone could ask for. I will always use DR.Schell and her team.
Amazing team. I am totally impressed and ensure you give a try to visit with your pets. You will not regret.
