We were shopping this afternoon (dec 7, 4 pm) while waiting for our car to be fixed at coles Newtown. We brought our pram so we put all the stuff inside the shopping bag we brought from home and hang it into our pram. At self checkout, the lady approached us and kept questioning if we have paid for our stuff while my husband still scan it one by one. She also suspected us for the item that my baby had it which they dont even sell it in the store, as if she implied that we are some sort of thief which very disrespectful of her. Lastly, we tried to pay with our vanilla visa card, and she asked for our signature. She rudely said that she need to confirm my signature on the card as well. She demanded and insisted us to sign our card with the pen provided by her that cant even do anything on the card. We have paid for everything but she makes everything complicated which never become a problem before. As we about to leave, i saw her talk to her colleague and she was pointing her hand at me many times. Is this the standard of your customer service in this store? I was wondering if she only questioning us just because we're asian, cos when I saw her talking to other customer it was completely different. I just want my piece of mind of shopping in this store but this is what I got, outrageous!! I will write a formal complain as well and I hope the management will handle this matter seriously.
Dec 2023 Went in this evening around 20:00 to buy a handful of items. Noticed that all the non self service checkouts were barricaded up and there was only one poor staff member looking after the self checkouts and the new ridiculously selfish self service conveyer checkouts. Not one single staffed checkout! I queried if there were any humans, to which the lovely member of staff noted he was. I apologised and clarified that I didn't want management to think I WANTED to use the self service machines, even if he put it through. The person in front of me quipped to the staff member "see, I'm not the only one who hates these things taking jobs away and creating record profits"... That said, I left my groceries on the till and went to Woolies, who had THREE staff on checkouts. THREE! Nov 2017 ⭐ Deli always understaffed. Never enough checkouts open. They always serve cigarette customers before grocery customers, very frustrating. Why do cigarette purchases have a VIP counter? Must be understaffed as the store manager seems to be there 24/7 stacking shelves.
The downsides of Coles at New Town are that it has some of the least accessible (car park is on a slope, non-perpendicular parking spaces, no safe thoroughfare for pedestrians and a lack of bicycle parking) parking facilities out of most supermarkets in greater Hobart and being a small store, you won't find the range of products you will at larger stores. That being said, Coles in New Town provides everything else with other stores and services like bottle shops, a K Mart, Wendy's, fried chicken, Baker's Delight, mechanics, newsagent/post office and chemist to name a few. Staff are helpful/knowledgeable and new specials come out on Wednesdays for the week. They have also undergone a multi-million dollar renovation with the store now having an improved layout, a pet treats bar, legumes bar and more modern styling. If you're in New Town and need convenience as a priority, it's hard to go past Coles New Town
I shopped here every week for 5 years and although the staff generally weren’t the friendliest I had no problem as I would always use the self check out. Now they have changed their hours of the self check out being open my weekly shop no longer falls within these hours. I have experienced nothing but problems with the check out process ever since, one week they managed to give all my shopping bags (the good ones) to another customer and she was kind enough to compensate me with one $0.15 bag! Another week I got told I couldn’t use the only check out that was open as I had to many items (eventually served at the 12 items or less check out as it was the only one open). Staff in general in the 5-6 weeks that I have had to go through the check outs have been appauling, if you hate your job that much you should probably leave! I changed store (to another Coles) and the service had been much better.
Didn’t know they are closing at 10pm on the 3rd. We arrived at 21:53, Fiona the lady stopped the us at the entrance and reminded us, which is good, we just gonna grab something very quickly. Then we head into the supermarket, Fiona talked to us again that we need to go to the register very soon, that’s ok. Then at 21:55 she used the broadcast to tell everyone that Coles is closing, ok. Then Fiona meet us on our way out to the register, she came to say Coles is closing, that’s the 4th time she told us in 3 mins, my partner was checking some kimchi, she followed us on the back telling us they are closing, again! 5 times in freaking 4 mins, so pushy! I have my receipt here, living time 21:57. Totally bad experience with them!!
At first glance, Coles Newtown appears to be your basic, standard Coles. But do not let this deceive you. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the highly enthusiastic Olivia (couldn’t catch her last name). Not only did she go the extra mile and serve customers with a warm smile and enthusiastic conversation, but she also was able to fluently converse in Mandarin to a young couple that couldn’t understand a product label. Her customer service is second to none and award winning. One might even say this Coles branch could compete with Woolworths. Thank you Olivia for making my everyday shopping experience, an absolute delight. Good things are definitely happening at Coles (Newtown).
Worst customer service. We always shop from Coles but from different suburbs. Today I went to Newtown and I was absolutely not happy with the service provided by the lady who was in front counter. It was around 8:30am morning, no other checkout was open we went to her and she was starting at us from the line we were standing, she kept on talking to her colleagues, there was no hello, goodmorning. Absolutely racist behaviour. The staff was chatting with the other customer very nicely and she changed her tune once she started serving us. She was very very rude. Please Coles management team do something about this kind of discrimination behaviour with south asian community.
17/06 at 9am - At checkout with 12 items, was told off by a very rude old wrinkly short blonde who made us move to another counter. I stated that the sign says 12 items or less then she claims she is not paid enough to handle this when other counters were open (coincidentally one had just opened and the self checkout was still closed). We had queued for 4 minutes and had 12 items exactly, Yet after us, her friends with over 20 items were served with a smile. WTF??? Coles - Remove these old cows! Never had such behaviour from Woolies - Is it perhaps New Town have a lot of scum and therefore the same calibre are hired by Coles??
I like the Coles New Town store & most of the staff, however, I’ve always had constant trouble getting checkout service. Now they’ve replaced the traditional checkouts all bar one in favour of the self-assisted checkout system I’ve noticed the price increases weekly & now not only are they stinging us w/ regular price hikes but we have to pack our own groceries while they reap benefits of high profit margins Wonder what will happen if or when customers are injured at these self-assisted checkouts & seek compensation. Surely, you’re making enough profit to enable regular Customer Service.
Terrible customer services I ever experienced. There are stuff there lacking of basic human manners. It’s really bad image what they have represent for Coles as brand. Somewhat I experienced racism in store by the particular staff. I was been told “we park are trolley like that!” at the self service, when everyone else doing the same as what I was doing. The lady there has created special rules on how should I park my trolley, when I wasn’t even on other people’s way. I don’t believe such people could still work at stores like Coles, and given out such comments to their customers.
Not as much variety as Coles in glenorchy. Vegetables weren't too fresh, and are expensive. Cos lettuce best before date is tomorrow yet they still charge full price. On top of all that, a staff member pushed in front of me while I was looking at chicken stock to rearrange shelves. She didn't care that I had to stand back and wait for her to finish in order to make my selection. Very rude! Woman at self serve check outs was in a mood, didn't greet me when I greeted her, and huffed at me when I handed her some corn someone else had left at the check out. I certainly won't be back!
would rate lower if possible, having two new born twins that can only take formula and in need of two tins each per week i was taken aback when told a limit of two per customer was store policy, perhaps if coles actually worked on solving the problem of foreigners sending multiple tins overseas we local residents would not be having to attend a different store simply to attain enough to feed our children, it appears inconveniencing this chains most important asset - local residents - is company policy also which is a real shame and completely unacceptable for all concerned
Three Saturdays ago I completed my tour of each Coles store in southern Tasmania. I am delighted to say that New Town was by far my favourite and I believe that the cause of this entirely rests with the young woman who served me. Olivia may have been on her name badge but she was truely an angel. I have never connected with an individual more in such a small amount of time. When I entered the store I am not ashamed to admit I was in a blue mood but by the time I left my cheeks were hurting with glee. Thank you Olivia and I hope your family is well
Worst experience ever. You don't have to worry about losing track of time if you want to shop here. Once it's less than ten minutes before they close, there's an old lady named Fiona who keeps repeating to you that they're going to close, and she keeps walking through the aisles and chasing you to the counter because she's really desperate to leave. We just came to buy two boxes of strawberries, and Fiona repeated the same sentence five times to us. How badly did Coles abuse the employees of this store to make them so eager to leave?
Not good,,,! Price marked incorrect on an item, told assistant who called price check, and it was wrong. Then wanted to charge me, I said I thought it was coles policy to give the item for free if it scanned at wrong price. The assistant was not happy and quite rude. The manager was called and item given for free by an unhappy staff member. This Coles store Newtown tas is ALWAYS marking things wrong, sign says one thing but checkout says another .Not a good store, try to avoid, but if you use make sure you check your docket.
Staff needs more training on checkout counters, they probably haven't got enough training on customer service. Coles always talks about customer service but that more looks like only on radio or other media, but in real staff not even well trained to provide exceptional customer service. Staff didn't even know how to explain terms and conditions, he cleared told me that his boss told him to do so when asked for a reason. Not really impressed by the way he dealt with me. Glenorchy Coles is probably better.
6 pm 2 registers open person on register 6 talked more than served and was so slow scanning items also did not know what Brussel sprouts were shelves are never stocked missing half your products you sell we get overcharged everytime we go here as we did again tonight store manager has no care factor about his staff or products staff don't seem happy do not like this store at all and I would like my money back from what you overcharged me on tonite parking is a nightmare too
Love one staff here called Fiona, very friendly but apparently she mostly do late afternoons. A few weeks ago, we did Click and collect as I was offered a good deal, once there, we're told we should have gone to the other pick up point at the side, not at the service desk. But we're not told about this online. It said, collect at the service desk. They were helpful though in packing the goods. Our first click and collect was also from the Service desk as instructed before.
I am not happy with the customer representative at coles Newtown as I have stuffs on my trolly and waiting for to check the price of special. As I want to be aside as not to obstruct other customers for service. But I was rudely told that I have not paid the money for groceries on my trolly, I am not running anywhere with that few stuffs. I love orange juice of coles but now I feel like its sour as they behave me , I am really disappounted
One of my local supermarkets. It is pretty well stocked for a smaller store and has convenient parking available. I find they have some things that Woolworths don’t have. Their fruit and veg are usually a decent quality and they have some reasonable specials. I would like to see less plastic packing and more Australian/ Tasmanian products though. I also take my soft plastics there for recycling through REDcycle – great initiative.
The management is absolutely disorganized on levels im yet to witness in any major city. Arrising in many negative impacts on customers i observed to my disgust. You cannot blame the floor staff for being substandard when the management behind them suffers from inadequacy to the point its comical. Procedures at this store are not a good representation of the brand at all. going to woolworths over the road in the future.
If coles treats customers who like to have a human serve them any worse by putting even more self service checkouts at Newtown I shall have to start doing my weekly shop at IGA. Coles are removing face to face customer service people at the same time as clogging up the aisles with delivery order pickers and their carts, which are left in the road of actual shoppers.
Very bad attitude towards Asians, especially those at the checkouts. I guess this happens in most of the area in Tasmania. They smile if the customers r Caucasians, the second they see Asians, they pull down their face (even though we greet them or thanks them, they still show us their arrogant attitude). Very rude ppl. Been observed for quite a while.
The store is great and has a large selection. However, on my latest online order I have received an expired coconut water. It seems the staff are not checking the dates and are leaving expired items on shelves. Normally I buy things in store but due to time constraint resorted to ordering online which was disappointing.
Handy place to get all in one when you shop, from a new and improved coles supermarket and a local butcher right next door, or if your thrift shopping at kmart and want to grab a Wendy's dog on your way out. All I would say it sometimes can feel a little over crowded but all in all, a good experience.
Supermarket selling all your groceries needs. A lot of products are on promotion and you can redeem your flybuys points here too. Generally few items are always out of stock. The quality of products and services is upto the mark and they just need little improvement regarding signages and tickets.
Its really amazing to see halal meat section and always filled with different brands and products... Thanks to all the team members, customer service staff and obviously store manaagemt who made this possible to support the meat appetite of the growing Muslim community in Tasmania... …
Ladies on the check out first thing in the morning are incredibly rude. Firstly I have to listen to them have a chat together before I can even get service and then their demeanor is just awful. If they are not happy with their work they should find a back office job away from customers.
Store is great overall but I can tell that the staffs are rude in general. I have felt this on multiple occasions. One time this lady at the counter asked me to pack my groceries myself lol! I would just go to self service if I wanted to pack myself. Why would I bother you?
Don't like how they have self service only at times. Make enough profit without doing away with jobs and service. Never use self service. Would rather be served by a person and help keep there job. they losts my $450 spent at there opposition.
This is a smaller Coles supermarket. parking is very average as it is on a sloop, hence you need to walk up and down ramps. Personally I prefer the Woolworth on Newtown Road, great parking, easy access and a bigger range.
Never enough staff on, self serve checkouts don't usually open until 9am. 1 register open until 9am. Unless there's 10 people waiting in a line. They might open a register or self serve. Worst supermarket I've been to.
An excellent Coles store with all the ex usual down down specials! They provide fresh produce on display always! Parking is available & wheelchair parking & access to the store is available for the disabled customers!
A Small supermarket with surprising items I have not seen in others as yet very fresh fruit and vegs every thing priced and well marked use by dates.. Way out of my usual shopping ares Just had to try an item I saw
poor not fresh badly organised you guys need to take not from ... I dont ... poper super markets. please keep turning your cold meats I. the deli ahahahhaa nasty hill street grocer and salamanca fresh all the way
Very nice whell chair friendly but it's a bit crowded at times. The new upgrading looks fantastic and really opens the shop up there seems to be a bit more variety than before. Would recommend shopping there
If you're closed, change the details that state you're open, specifically googled to see if the store was open, travel there and it's not. Woolworths have managed to change their details So why can't coles?!
A larger than most supermarket, reasonably spacious for social distancing, appears to have good hygiene practices in place. The automatic checkouts are stupid and they hate me, but I hate them back …
Kicked out before they closed by being yelled at by a very rude female employee. Won't be coming back. Employees yelling saying "we're closed" well before they are scheduled to close.
Friendly staff most of the time, we all have our not so friendly days, easy to find products, good range of products, my dogs food is always cheaper than Woolworths.
Why do they change the sales tags so early was there just after 8pm on Tuesday and they'd already ripped the old tags down and were putting the new specials tags up.
Pretty good parking out the front. Very busy supermarket, making it a more rushed and less comfortable experience. Terrible discount prices. "Save 50c or save 28c".
Coles took the opportunity to completely revamp during the lockdown in Tasmania. The results speak for themselves. Staff seem much more happy and engaging as well.
Nice, friendly and different to the Woolies experience. ️ …
Very helpful staff especially the tall young man with glasses at the service counter who wheeled my trolley to my car as I have a slight physical disability.
Great location - On site parking - good price! My go to Coles... Although I wished the checkout was available more often other than the self check out!
Really inconvenient. Every morning they only have 2 registers open, self serve is closed, so if you want just one item your forced to wait 10 minutes
Good layout, very open, quite large, the lighting is a little strange in places but manageable. Great variety especially for dietary requirements.
I visited Coles New store at Risdon Road Newtown. What a lovely amazing store .so large. .only negatively major lack of staff on checkouts.
First time back since the revamp. Very impressive new layout. Took awhile to find things but this was expected. Very nice. Very clean.
Coles is the best food shop in the Kmart complex in New Town. You can get quality food and service and there is easy parking outside.
Well set, good variety of food. Floor staff very helpful, check out woman,Liz, obviously did not want to be there, abrupt and moody.
Bad customer service at self checkout rude behaviour from the employee which doesn’t even how to put code when it’s not on product.
Good clean place with good service. Friendliness is everywhere and well sorted and easy to get around store with a good lay out
A nice selection of fresh produce! Lovely service from staff. Definitely recommend this store, will be shopping here a lot more
Little old lady in the corner with a booth selling cocaine' sort of surprised me. But overall a enjoyable shopping experience
Reasonable layout. 2 large checkouts, multiple self checkouts, one express. large carpark as it services the whole plaza.
Large selection for a Coles outlet. Friendly staff and plenty of shopping space in the aidles. No lineups for A2 here..
Coles Newtown is a very good supermarket. Staff are pleasant, awlays clean and well stocked. Easy convenient parking
Decent selection, wish more effort was put into stock rotation and quality control especially in the produce section
With the renovations that has been made it so easy to find anything that you would want, cudos to the team at coles.
Just been served by a lady named Kaye. No customer service. What happened to friendly staff. Certainly off putting.
Have had my fair share of rude staff members and understaffed deli area. Feels a lot less welcoming than Woolies.
A normal supermarket. Good selection 9f produce. Helpful staff. Some cash/card self checkouts were unavailable.
Well stocked and there's lots of shops around to complete your shopping; bottleshop, kmart, budget chemist etc.
Best Coles in the whole Tasmania. Highly recommended place for shopping. And opens till 12am. ✌✌ …
Dated, small range of products and a cramped feel. The staff are less friendly here than other supermarkets.
There is always staff on a checkout after 8pm at night edit: nvm they don't do that anymore …
Great choice and presentation since refurbishment. Especially extensive veg and salads range.
Clean spacious. Great bargains. Or sit have good coffee an bite to eat. Plenty free parking.
Wonder how old a town has to be before its not considered new anymore . And what's a Coles?
Lots of fresh produce the meats section was great lots of mini roasts large seafood section
Really amazing staff that are super helpful and since there reservation looks incredible.
They do the wholemeal flatbreads in-store which are fantastic. Also Rosny Park does too.
Rude staff, unsafe car-park, small store! Shopped here once and never will be returning.
Great service at Coles New town. Especially the Deli staff, Chris and Koshi. Fantastic!
Plenty of free parking. Great range of products and situated in a useful row of shops
Busy place, steep slanted carpark looses a star after wrestling a trolley around it.
I love the new improved supermarket! The staff are so friendly and super helpful.
I love the great customer service provided by the staff, best Coles in Australia
Converted almost all the checkouts to self-serve. Only one left with a person.
New store is super tidy and easy to find everything. Good job coles …
Fabulous on Tuesdays - special quiet time!! Well set out / friendly staff.
Nice staff, very tolerant of difficult customers. Poor stock though......
Been shopping here for 30 years. The staff are always friendly and kind.
Great friendly staff and are more than willing to help you find products
I visit here every second day. I know this place better than staff☺️☺️☺️
Very good since they have renovated it easy to find thing on shelves now
Very good in store layout and everything is fresh and reasonably priced.
All house hold items, grocery, milk product & fruits are with cheap rate
great new deli set out with friendly and helpful staff. quick checkout.
Great service always friendly, find the store at most times a bit messy
Great place to shop nice staff and lots of parking couldnt fault it
It's a great store with a huge variety and ample undercover parking
Prefer this Woolworths store. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
Self serve always closed of a morning, but checkouts always busy.
My favourite supermarket. Not too big, not too small. Just right!
The recent (2020) renovations make this a pleasant place to shop
