I took my cat to the DVC almost 2 years ago. I'm still very angry about my experience there. I had adopted an adult cat some months before and brought her in to have a few issues checked. I left with no solutions, a $70 tube of ointment my cat did not need and absolutely furious. I had to make another appointment for her at a new vet to get proper care for her. First, she was biting at a couple of her nails and they had turned a sickly brown colour. DVC vet couldn't figure out which of her nails were the issue and told me multicoloured cats had different coloured nails. I think she mixed up nails and paw pads. New vet said that she was getting dirt pulled into the base of the two nails under the skin and showed me how to clean it. And let me know that I should clean her ears to help. Second, my cat is overweight. I adopted her that way and wanted help to get her weight down. Instead I was told all of the different reasons she was fat (the gist was that it was something that I had done) and got no advice or help to manage it. One of the techs sarcastically offered me a measuring cup when I left. (I measured her food already. She was getting less from me than she did in the shelter.) New vet gave me some calorie guidelines for her weight and didn't try to shame me over her weight. He was also concerned that she had gained a pound between the DVC visit (new vet had the records from that visit) and seeing him a month later. I explained that when they weighed my cat at DVC they put her on a large dog scale while she was in her carrier and then guessed at how much the carrier weighed. I don't think that he believed me. I weighed her after the DVC visit and yes, they were off by a pound. Third and the most infuriating, she had had some teeth removed in the shelter and I wanted to know when I should get her teeth checked again to keep them healthy. The vet just kept repeating, "when they get bad. when they get bad." New vet said each cat is different and offered to show me what to look for. But as soon as he looked in her mouth he said that the amount of inflammation she had didn't look right and after consulting with his colleagues referred me to a dental specialist. My cat had a very painful gum disease and had to have all of her teeth pulled out. She was on steroids for over a year before the inflammation in her mouth was gone. Had I not taken her to a new vet she would have stayed sick and in pain and I would have had no idea. I've talked to people in the neighbourhood about this vet office and was told it was hit or miss depending on which vet you get. I apparently got someone who had no idea how to treat my cat. The only person in the office who was nice to me and my cat was the only person who wasn't involved in her care. I think she was also the only person who bothered to read the medical history that I brought. I would never consider bringing either of my two cats to DVC again.

Where to begin? I can only talk about my own personal experience with the Danforth Veterinary Clinic. I only chose the DVC because I had moved into the area and they were the closest. My former vet (I’ll call them “Vet 5” because I’d rate them a 5 out of 5) was fantastic. I was sorry to move on. The care for my two cats at the DVC was fine while the cats were healthy, but as one of my cats got older there were ongoing issues. One of my cats came down with what turned out to be feline acne (according to my vet at Vet 5 when I described the symptoms to her), a very common and easy to treat condition. The Danforth Veterinary Clinic instead said that my cat needed surgery costing more than a thousand dollars. My cat’s small, watery pimple burst on its own the next day, thus avoiding the costly and unnecessary surgery. Worse still, the same cat eventually began to lose weight. I took him to the DVC and after a brief examination was told “It’s probably cancer.” They gave me the name of some animal cancer clinics. When my former cat, 15 years earlier, got sick and I was still going to Vet 5, they undertook some involved and thorough tests and examinations and were able to confirm an untreatable type of cancer. Not the DVC this time. I was just referred on. I wanted a second opinion and returned to my original vet, Vet 5. They weren’t convinced of the cancer diagnosis and, as they did many years before, performed a number of tests. They were able to come up with the correct diagnosis: a bowel disorder and kidney disease. My cat fought for a number of months with medication, injections and special food, but in the end nothing could be done. We lost him last November. I eventually complained to the College of Veterinarians of Ontario. About everything I’ve mentioned and about being overcharged for cat food (which the DVC called a “clerical error”). I was extremely disappointed by what I considered to be substandard care. Most recently my one remaining cat had run out of food and I stopped by the Danforth Veterinary Clinic to get some for her. The receptionist grudgingly sold me the food, but said that it would be “inappropriate” to sell me any more because of my complaint. It would be inappropriate of me to ask them for pet medical care (as if I would, given my bad experiences), but just to sell me a bag of kibble? I was told not to return. Until now I’ve refrained from posting any online reviews of my terrible experiences at the Danforth Veterinary Clinic, but being turned away today—especially after all that me and my poor cat went through—convinced me that people should have a chance to hear what I have to say.

This place is well located, pricing is good and generally the staff is friendly. I would love to be able to write a 5 star review for this place but unfortunately my first experience left me feeling a little cold. Where I got a little turned off is when I was with the vet my little pup who has only ever been to the vet once got slightly snappy (no contact just a "stop poking me" nip that didn't even make contact). The vet essentially blamed it on my dogs breed and that they were unpredictable and kind of insinuated that my dog was dangerous and might need to be muzzled which she absolutely is not and does not. At this point I may or may not go back but being someone who has worked as/with breeders I don't really appreciate the stereotyping of any breed. I have seen many a dog go off from stereotypically family breeds and have met more sweet wonderful dogs from "dangerous" breeds than I can count. Also keep in mind that she had done a very cursory introduction with my dog before she started poking at her; barely a sniff period or a pat. I wasn't super surprised that the dog got fed up. Had she acknowledged that behaviour any other way than to call out her breed I would have been totally down, my dog was definitely not as polite as I have seen her be on that particular day. The dog is a brand new rescue, would that not be a more likely cause? Perhaps the fact she is in a brand new place on a cold table surrounded by the smell of 100 other dogs and a stranger sticking stuff in her mouth/eyes/ears could have been a contributing factor? It was just such a faux-pas and it really rubbed me the wrong way.

My dog had a tumor so I took it to see Dr. Au. She told me it was melanoma. I was young and distraught because I didn’t want my dog that I’ve had since I was 14 to die. I didn’t know what to do. Dr. Au started telling me I needed this and I needed that and I trusted her. The thing that I will always remember the most is when she said my dog was due for a vaccination so it would be best for me to get a 5 years vaccination. So I did. She knew my dog would not live long enough to need a 5 years vaccination because she knew the cancer was aggressive and had no cure. I always trusted doctors because they’re supposed to help. That’s their job. To help make people or dogs better. To help heal them. My dog died 6 months later. At the end of the day, Dr. Au runs a business and she doesn’t care about anything but getting your money. Don’t be tricked by their friendly demeanor at this vet. Wait until your pet, whom you’ve considered a member of your family, gets sick and watch them try to upsell you in your moment of vulnerability.

I was amazed that having been a client of the Danforth Vet Clinic for close to 10 years, they would not accept my cat in an emergency situation, but instead referred me to 2 other vets who were not accepting any new clients. I called on a Monday in need of immediate help and was told the earliest they could accept me was the Friday. I pleaded for them to see my cat, even for 10 minutes to give him medicine, and was turned away. I had to call over 6 different vets for anyone to accept my cat the same day. I was told repeatedly that vets are not accepting new clients during Covid, even the emergency clinics. Over a year into Covid, DVC should be aware of the situation and provide more care for their existing clients, knowing we have no other option to turn to. Their priority should be to reserve enough time during the day to treat their existing clients in medical distress. Or at least re-arrange the schedule to prioritize animals in need. Shame on them.

After 18 years with my quirky, super-awesome rescue cat, Flipper, she was in very poor health. I contacted Danforth Veterinary Clinic and they got me an appointment quickly. The staff and doctor were wonderful! After reviewing Flipper's medical history and records from our previous vet, we decided the kindest path would be to euthanize Flipper to prevent continued suffering as she likely had cancer on top of her other health issues. The doctor was gentle, respectful and very kind. It was a very difficult experience to say goodbye to such an important companion. I was so relieved by the kindness and care Flippy and I experienced at this clinic. I highly recommend them based on this experience. It is clear they love animals and will treat your companion will great care.

We used the clinic many times, which was located only minutes from where we lived at the time and found Dr. Au and Dr. Elmhirst excellent vets who treated Juliette, our very active and anxious Yorkshire Terrier with the care she needed from when we got her at 5 months old. After we moved we continued using DVC until the time and distance it took to get there caused motion sickness in our dog, therefore we had to find a closer vet, however we wanted to thank the veterinarians, technicians and support staff at the clinic and note they did not lose a patient because of the care, facilities or staff, it was simply logistics.

I often heard that this clinic is overcharging, and expensive. I went in there to ask for a quote on dental cleaning but they were not willing to give it. I kept asking until they reluctantly gave it to me " it should be about 1,000 dollars and more depending on how bad your dog's teeth is". And they insisted that I made an appointment and bring my dog in to run some tests and the vet would tell the cost. I was sure that there will be more mandatory tests and more fee when my dog was on the table. So I didn't come back. Their reputation proceeds them.

  • Clayton Gilbert

I took my cat Iggy in and was mistakenly overcharged. Rachel, ( I hope I have the right name here, she had purple hair) called me and I was reimbursed the next day for a hundred and change. It was an honest mistake and they easily could of not contacted me about it and I would have been non-the-wiser. Everyone makes mistakes, but how they respond to those mistakes that shows their character and integrity; which Rachel and the rest of the clinic team obviously posses in high quantities as demostrated after this event. Thank you Rachel!

Was in a touchy situation over Covid as I had an elderly relative local to the clinic & unable to care for her 2 cats & me being too far away to make it into the city more than once a week. This clinic really stepped up & assisted in the care & rehoming of them. I am forever indebted to them and specifically Sara and Tabitha. They are stars & let their love & passion for animals shine through in extremely difficult & sensitive times. If I lived in the city, I wouldn't hesitate to trust them with the care or my dog.

Been with Danforth Veterinary for our dog Casper's medical needs and check up, and I got nothing but great words to say. They're professional in meeting our needs and making sure Casper is healthy and up to date with his Vaccinations. Unfortunately we have to change our veterinary clinic since we moved to Pickering, however, for those looking for one in the Danforth area, this place is highly recommended. Dr. Au and staff are amazing, Casper and I will definitely miss them.

  • izzy boobli

Honestly so disappointed with how overpriced they are. Went in for a check up and asked for the price of a tooth cleaning, and was told it would be 400-500 $ because my dog had mild plaque buildup. Booked the tooth cleaning and they wouldn't tell me how much it would cost, had to have ANOTHER checkup and blood work drawn to get the estimate at 830 dollars!!! Thats double what I was told previously. WAAAAAY overpriced and will never bring my dog here again.

I absolutely LOVE Danforth Vet! And apparently so does my pup, as every time we go, his tail starts to wag like crazy and gets excited as soon as we step foot in the clinic. I’m a first time dog mom and have been going since my boy was just 6 weeks old, now almost 9 mo. Their team is amazing... the ladies that work at the front desk are always so friendly. Dr. Chung and Dr. Au are so caring, extremely patient and knowledgeable.

  • Dawn Marquis

I couldn't be happier with the level of experience, professionalism and caring nature of this vet clinic. Dr. Au is amazing and explained everything to ensure results of the wellness of my cat. The young ladies, Ashley, Tabitha and Victoria at the front that make it all happen are fantastic friendly and make you feel comfortable. Thank you everything!!! I wish I could rate them with 10 stars!!!

  • Nadejda Portnova

Very good service, starting from the reception. 10 minute waiting time, including form completion.Doctor Jennifer Woods is perfect. She performed a very thorough examination of my cat, renewed only necessary vaccine, trimmed cat's claws and gave very useful dietary suggestion. Total cost was very reasonable. Will come again and would suggest this clinic to the pet owners.

  • Paul Cass

This vet used to be great - now no one cares! Paid for tests and had to follow-up many times to speak with vet about results. Then they FORGOT to run one test we paid for. Our poor cat has been sick for 3 weeks waiting for this vet to help her - we are off to a new vet!! Save you money and go to a vet clinic that cares about your animal more than your wallet!!!

  • Shavaun Jamieson

I'm so happy to have found this clinic several years ago. Dr Au is excellent, and she communicates clearly and with kindness -- even when I ask probably-silly questions. (I've seen other vets over the years who were...not so good at that.) And the rest of the team are amazing, too! Tabitha, Sara, and Victoria are always so welcoming and friendly.

  • Adrienne Lee

We’ve been taking our pets there since we adopted each of them. Never had anything bad to say about the team at Danforth Vet! The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and kind, and the vets (esp. Dr. Au) are amazing! I own a grooming shop, and when I have a client looking for a vet for their pet, I always refer them to Danforth!

  • Carm Caruana

Excellent and compassionate care for your pet. Dr. Au has been running the clinic for many years, and she shows her love for animals in a variety of ways. She is knowledgeable about illnesses and treatments for your pet. If she is unable to treat the illness, she will refer you to other alternative places for treatment.

  • Courtney Edwards

The staff are always warm and friendly. They are kind, respectful and they always take such good care of my pup and I. They know that her health and happiness are my main concern and they don't take advantage of that fact. I can't thank them enough, you can tell they love what they do, and that animals are their lives!

  • Jayme McCabe

They have always treated our cats with professional yet compassionate care, and were very supportive of my boyfriend and I through my older cat's sickness and eventual passing. It is obvious in how they interact with the clinic animals and their pet parents that all of the staff here are true animal lovers.

  • Nezhla Yakub

We took our dog when he was a puppy here about two or so years ago. The receptionist was super nice but the vet that looked after us was unprofessional, spoke in a very condescending tone and was super rude/rushed us out the door. Would not recommend.

  • Carlos Taggett

My 19 year old extremely loved Cat(Two Paws) was severely ill with a Virus, totally dehydrated and unresponsive, I was seen that day! He was rehydrated on the spot and given medication, fast, efficient, understanding! This is a Great Clinic!!!

I've been taking my cat here weekly for 3 years for saline drips to prevent her kidney failure from getting worse. The staff are friendly, compassionate and skilled, and I never have to sit and wait. The reasonable pricing is a big plus too!

Our beloved Sasha passed away peacefully at home over the long weekend. We just want to say a heartfelt thank you to Dr.Au and the dedicated staff at the clinic to keep our old girl comfortable in her last few weeks. Thank you. Philip
