As a student on medical aid, I would strongly advise not to go there. First, they will tell you that you need way more fillings than the one you actually went for, which is the maximum number of fillings covered by your medical aid. Then, they will "fix" it by giving you months of pain. When you keep on going there due to the pain they started post-filling, they act like you're bothering them and try to charge you off your medical aid. Long story short, I went for 1 filling, ended up with 8 fillings (max number covered by medical aid) and now I need supposedly a root canal (R5000+). Really unethical and unprofessional. Make sure you read the other reviews about how many more people got the same issue as me if you think that's a one time case. Something I wish I did. Edit in response to below comments: very professional how you attack the patients to save your own reputation. Something which you have been doing with all the other patients who have had similar issues with your practice. The point is regardless of the oral condition of the patients, when they come to you, it's with the purpose that you will fix their issues. Contrary to what you people do which is to aggravate the situation and make it painfully worse to squeeze money out of the patients. I had no issue/pain with my teeth prior to coming to your practice, regardless of my oral hygiene. It all started after you lured me with your maximum number of fillings. Anyway, I will let the patterns speak for themselves as the previous reviews indicate I'm not the only one. As for reaching out to me, do you think I will trust you again to let you put your hands in my mouth after what you have caused? I would rather go to more ethical people. And what kind of flawed argument is that by saying that I had ample opportunity not to come back? You messed up my mouth and it was on medical aid. Obviously, I would come back to you in hope of a fix instead of going to other dentists who will charge me for it. I can't be held liable for the pain you started. Which is why I came to you. That said, me coming to you 5 times means that you had 5 chances to fix what you did wrong. Reminder that I only posted that review after I went from 1 filling to a R5000+ root canal for issues caused after you started doing your fillings.

i had an unforgettable experience...unforgettably bad!imagine going to a medical proffessional with any ailment and them asking why you have that ilness rather than offering you solutions and supporting you to get better...this thing called patient care/bedside manners or whatever? i felt really awful about myself after.i mean maybe i misunderstood but the dentist was just short of saying i have an ugly smile thats how i felt through the whole expeeience, just awful also umm that awkward moment of being asked about doing the procedure, insisting on a quote (something which i was told over the phone i could get before confirming the procedure as i do before i get a vaccine, or get a haircut etc) and it feeling like i was being pressured and forced when i said id rather get the quote first and being made to feel unreasonable for insisting again, on something thats more or less standard.it felt like it felt reallt like it was all going to be by force, i mean i couldnt even imagine lying in the chair and feeling at ease knowing there were various medd etc going to be administered to me. i felt trapped and confused. everything just was happening so quickly in terms of diagnosis recommrndation and it actually also felt unsafe, it felt like nobody really knee what they were talking about even if technivally they did.of course wow! i suppose i got a free x ray out of the ordeal of feeling bullied, which will supposedly be sent to me for what, i dont know and even if i didnt feel like i was going to use it at the next one though really i said yes because i just wanted to leave.and so i paid for the consultation and got as far away as possible.i felt like no way i was putting my care in this places hands.if i could have i was just feeling like eh let me evej get my name and details back because i do not trust!not a good vibe hey.UNPROFFESIONAL.i mean going to yhe dentist is already tough buy yah this definiyely did not put me at ease.

I strongly advise all to stay away from this dentist on main under all costs. They are only concerned about money and continually participate in malpractice by overcharging patients for unnecessary dental procedures. If you are on medical aid, new to Cape Town or a student do not go anywhere near this fraudulent dentist and the dishonest staff. They are known to conduct improper dental practices, by openly misdiagnosing and deceitfully frightening patients to do unnecessary dental procedures like redundant fillings, to max out the patient’s medical aid coverage to fill their insurance claim quota. My colleagues and students went to this dentist on main for some quick teeth cleaning, only to meet crude and immoral staff rushing to get medical authorizations for unwarranted dental procedures. Once they discovered my colleagues and students were on comprehensive medical insurance that cover various dental procedures like tooth fillings and extractions, the dishonorable dentist and staff deviously misread scans to them to insist on countless unneeded teeth fillings and drilling. This unethical dentist simply scams patients to do several nonessential fillings to fully max out their medical aid, while leaving patients in so much pain that could be avoided. Because dentist on main and staff are crooks who do unnecessary procedures out of their greed for medical aid payouts and disregard for genuine patient care. They only seek maximum claims for themselves by doing irregular treatments and committing blatant medical fraud. I repeat don’t go here no matter what for the sake of your dental health/safety, for this is a shameful malpractice.

I think this is a classic supervised medical negligence case. I've had 3 porcelain crowns at by Dr Kalan on my front teeth in March 2015 because he recommended them over veneers to correct my smile. These teeth were root canal treated. Dr Kalan never made any recommendations about it or reviewed x-rays properly. We never had any discussion about this, he just said the crowns will last if I do not open bottles with them. In February 2018 two of the crowned teeth fractured off at gum level while flossing. When I wrote back to Dentist on main about it, I was simply ignored. Besides moneys wasted on Dr Kalan, now my new dental bill is growing over 10000 for root canal re-doing post injury at another dentist now. He identified chronic infection at both roots that was there for years. I do not remember Dr Kalan taking x-rays at every angle and look at them properly before crowning my teeth. I was now explained by the new dentist that root canal treated teeth are so brittle that a dentist shall fit on a metal pin into the treated root before crowning the teeth to avoid exposing people to the cost of loosing their teeth like happened to me. In addition I have also had the same unfriendly, unaccomodating, and rude attitude experience with receptionists at the dentist on main clinic as reported by other patients in these reviews. Please avoid this place at all costs if you need a reliable dentist and not just plug in a hole and go. P.S they have never wrote me or called me back unlike they commented on this review. Just stay away from them.

A NO-NONSENSE DENTIST I visited a dentist in the USA during my stay there. The dentist there did a few fillings for me but was exceptionally expensive. Although the rest of the teeth that needed fillings were pointed out to me I waited a year until my return to Cape Town to have the rest of my fillings done. A friend recommended Dr Kalan to me. Dr Kalan pointed out all the problems in my mouth and took all the necessary radiographs to confirm what he had seen in my mouth. Dr Kalan fixed all my teeth at a fraction of the cost. I have gone back to him a few times for my six-monthly check-ups and cleaning. Dr Kalan is a very meticulous dentist who is at the same time very patient and compassionate. All the staff at the practice are very friendly and work as a team in perfect harmony. I would strongly recommend Dentist-on-Main for all your dental needs. But be warned: Heed the advice of the Oral Hygienist to brush and floss daily after the first visit because the dentist might not see you if you insist on maintaining poor oral care. I met a student in the waiting room who came back with dirty teeth, was refused fillings, went to another dentist for fillings, but decided to come back to Dentist-on-Main when she realised that the standard of care was not the same.

What an exceptional and pain-free experience! I visited Dentist-on-Main on recommendation of a colleague at work. I have had ongoing pain on the right side of my face for more than a year. I visited a number of dentists who could not find where the pain came from. The one dentist even said it was all in my mind. Dr Kalan identified the problem within a few minutes. A radiograph further confirmed his diagnosis. I walked out there with my mouth very numb but have been pain-free since that visit. Dr Kalan pointed out a few other problems that I was never told about previously. I will be going back soon for a complete cleaning of my gums and teeth. Hopefully I will be able to get my other teeth fixed as soon as my work commitment allows me to. The people at the front desk were friendly and very competent. I did not have an appointment but was prepared to wait. The young lady kindly asked Dr Kalan to fit me into the very busy morning schedule. I probably contributed to him running late with his other patients but he and the dental team remained focused. Each person in the team knew their role and I have yet to see such precise symphony in action! I will certainly go back and will be making Dentist-on-Main our family dentist

I have yet to visit this dentist office. It is very close to where I live so I was thinking about it. I can not attest to the office staff or how successful/unsuccessful the treatments are. However, upon viewing the reviews and noticing the condescending tone in which the owner responds to negative comments, I can't help but think this may not be the best place to go. It is very important to me to not only visit a place that does good work, but prides itself on both its customer service and professionalism. Due to the nature of my response, I am aware that I also may receive such a comment as to disregard what I was saying. If the owner is reading this, I just wish to say that instead of attacking your clients or responding to their concerns with hostility, perhaps it would be more beneficial to both the customer and to your business, to ask what they feel you could have done better and brainstorm ways to rectify the issue (especially if the problem seems to be a recurring theme). However I also understand that as an owner, it is completely up to you how you want to conduct your business, so best of luck to you and your future endeavors.

Absolutely pathetic Both dentist unable to splint a tooth successfully. No informed consent forms signed. Practice manager giving incorrect dental advice! Refusal to remove the mess they made in my mouth. This is certainly something I will be reporting to the Health Professionals Council of South Africa. As for your reply! I was made to wait 2 hours for my medical records! Abuse?? Is asking for a refund abuse? Is asking for removal of poorly placed dental cement abuse? Your practice manager was giving dental advice! I have footage of her impersonating a dentist and screaming at me. I also have a witness. I was entirely calm during the entire scenario! You performed procedures on me without informed consent. And now you accuse me of abuse!! I hope you have evidence because I do!

I was very impressed by the admin staff and when I requested my records they were very helpful. I am very unhappy with the dentist however. In the 5-10 minutes that I saw him, he barely looked at my teeth, he said some abusive things that made me feel both embarrassed and disgusted, and he practically ran out the room to move onto the next patient. I went to another dentist that same day and was very happy with their treatment, they gave me a clear action plan and encouraged me that while I have a few issues, there is no reason to feel disgusted to embarrassed at all. Aside from his terrible treatment of me, I can't even recommend this dentist based on his skills, because he spent so little time actually in the room.

I have been a patient of Dr. Kalan for several years and my experiences with him and his staff have always been pleasant. They work as well coordinated team that provides top-class dental services. Since many of us are not fans of visits to the dentist, I must say I have always felt in capable hands and was always professionally informed about the procedures that were being performed. The coordination of Dr. Kalan's dental practice extends beyond its walls, as one is sent reminders about biannual check-ups/cleaning, swift arrangements are made for appointments to resolve dental emergencies and communications with medical aid providers are handled seamlessly. I can highly recommend them and their work!

Inefficient and unapologetic. They were 40 minutes late for my appointment and it did not seem abnormal to them. Not a single word of apology or update as I sat there for 40 minutes past my scheduled appointment. Poor form. I wish I could respond to the response from the practice below - for anyone interested, please read the below essay as to why it is not their fault. The blame falls on my shoulders for being disoriented and confused - before being told I do not know how to conduct myself in a post 1994 South Africa. It's all quite a laugh - this practice could really use some PR training. Terrible experience made worse by a defensive, insecure response from the company.

Don't be fooled by the budget-friendly appearance. It's better to spend a little more somewhere else, you'll end up paying less. I was quoted for a lot of fillings which another dentist suggested that I don't really need just yet. They took some shoddy X-rays, which probably didn't help the diagnosis. The other dentist had to retake X-rays (and I could understand why when I saw them). If I had remained with Dentist on Main, I would have ended up paying more than double what I am now (cheaper per filling, but 4 additional fillings). I had to wait 30mins for my appointment - I can understand that's not entirely in their hands. The dentist was friendly.

Dr Kalan is a friendly, thorough and very skilled dentist who always makes sure you understand whatever problems you have. He doesn’t rush patients despite being busy, but the practise is run very efficiently. I’ve had fillings done by him multiple times, and I’ve never had any issues whatsoever. His staff are very well organised and helpful, I haven’t waited long for an appointment at any visit. Everyone is professional but still friendly and welcoming. I’ve always been very impressed and satisfied with Dentist on Main, they’re a very well-run practise and I can easily recommend them as the people to help take care of your teeth.

Friendly staff but very basic facilities. Since last writing my review I went back to my previous dentist (who is slightly further away) and he advised me that the fillings reccomended by Dentist on Main were not necessary! He confirmed this with xrays. It seems Dentist on Main just wanted to make a quick buck. I wish there was an option to respond to their response to my review as it is quite laughable! Also...how can you not have a record of your patients?! I see they have commented on several people's reviews (mine included) to say they have no record of them ever visiting the dental practice...very convenient.

Went here cause it was closer than my usual dentist. The front desk service was okay, no problems there. The dentist was super pushy on me getting multiple 'cavity fillings' and told me 'may have to' redo my root canal with a surgery. I went to my usual dentist who did a thorough x ray and told me that there were no multiple cavities, and that there was no infection present for my root canal, that it was just sensitive. Glad I didn't go back, and it seems that there are ingenuine positive reviews as they all seem to be written by the same party. The medical advice given here is not objective and driven by $$$.

Wow, I love this Dentist! I first went to Dr. Kalan last year for a cleaning. I've since done another cleaning and all my fillings. I had cavities the size of a canyon and Dr. Kalan restored my mouth. I am so grateful. I've sung his praises to my gym buddies, friends at the Vida next door, my partner in the U.S. and everyone who comments on my smile. He is a gentle Dentist, careful, precise, and deliberate about getting you restored. He centers care and health. I recommend Dr. Kalan without hesitation. My dad and I both went to Dr. Kalan and his team for the first time this month. And I will recommend them to anyone, after our visit! The team was professional and super helpful. Amazing team! Well deserved 5 stars from a review perspective. Professional working environment, tidy and well spaced out. Warm receptionist and very welcoming. Patient education performed to ethical requirements. Discuss with the patient about their recommended plan of management and as a patient you voice out what you would desire from them. My 87 year old Mom was needing a new set of dentures. I was on a short visit from the USA, so we were both very dependent on a short turnaround time. Dr. Kalan amd his staff did everything possible to make this happen. We were scheduled for four visits in four days. Even the specialist technician made the effort to be there for the final fitting on the last day. This is way above and beyond amazing service. I’ve been going to Dentist on Main Rondebosch for two years now and couldn’t be happier with their service. From friendly and efficient staff who make the booking process very simple, reminders on WhatsApp every six months and easy scheduling to an incredibly efficient check up and clean. I am convinced that he was intentionally over aggressive with my filling so I now need a root canal. This tooth had zero pain before. I went for a cleaning and was convinced by the dentist that one of my teeth needed a filling. It was a small thing so I trusted him and agreed. Now the whole half of my face aches. I can't chew on that side. I am told i need a root canal. My medical aid doesn't cover that and I do not have the 4k that it costs. I wish I had been warned of the risk before hand. I would have left the tooth alone

The dental service I received here was great . The staff were very supportive and we’re very keen in educating patients on importance of dental hygiene and were very flexible in their bookings and understanding of schedules and following up. I had very deep fillings done , in a painless and very well done procedure. I am actually very keen and looking forward to my next year dentist visit because of them. I am also religiously brushing , flossing and utilising mouthwash twice a day ! Great Service!

Dr. Kalan and his staff are not only gentle and professional, they are the kindest people in dental care in the whole of Cape Town. I was having issues with my gum so I visited them; I had exhausted the biannual dental visit my student medical insurance cover entitles me to. I couldn't believe my ears when Dr. Kalan told me to report the next day for free cleaning. And oh, they offered me free tooth paste and brush. Kind souls in healthcare. Pass by and you won't regret.

By far the the best dental care l have ever experienced from the front door staff who welcome you with smiles right up to the very informative and awesome Dentist. The dental service I received here was top notch. The staff are quite kind and keen on educating patients on how to really take care of their teeth. They even provide you with printed information on your specific dental concern. The dentist took his time to properly do all my fillings with a touch of expertise. The receptionist are quite proactive in following up with patients. They are simply excellent in their service.

I visited dr Kalan’s after breaking a tooth and scheduled a series of fillings around the same time. I was very nervous since the broken tooth was one of my front teeth and visible to others when i smile. Doctor did an amazing job and the colour of the filling matched my tooth exactly.!! The staff is very nice and it is easy to communicate with the office - even through whatsapp (= I am definitely very pleased.

They offer the best dental service in town. Dental work can be worrisome but Dr. Kalan and his staff make it acceptable to visit dental clinic with ease and hope. I went to Dentist on Main for cleaning and fillings. The staff is very professional, friendly and patient. They're very warm and welcoming. I for one really appreciate the doctors at dentist on main. I went there with a severe toothache that then resulted into swelling but The doctor worked his magic on and there I was fine and well. Dr. Kalan's staff is warm and are really open in helping you navigate medical aid issues. I was helped swiftly all the 3 times I went there, and the actual procedures from cleaning to filling were very well-done. They're also really good about encouraging you to own your own dental hygiene by stressing the importance of flossing every day and yearly cleaning. Definitely my go-to from now on.

I went a few months ago and I was very happy with my experience with everyone in the practice, however after thinking the problem was found and sorted with a filling I left only to still experience awful pain. I went back a week ago, was told I need to be given two more fillings and the pain is still there. I'm down almost R 4000 from the two visits and still with the original problem.

I had my first visit in 2019. I had my second visit today. The staff are really courteous and friendly. They had the patience and grace to answer my questions and explain the procedures. The staff do know their stuff (pun intended ) I had some fillings done and two years later they are still intact. Their service is impeccable. I would 100% recommend them.

My experience with Dr Kalan and associates was truly amazing, I’ve been with dentist on main for a few years now and not once did I ever have a bad/unpleasant experience. Thumps up to the Dentist on Main team... I was in excruciating pain right through the night and even though their appointment book was full they manage to fit me in as an emergency patient. I was taken out of pain almost immediately . Turns out I needed a root canal. Had my root canal done pain free and hassle free!

Look, no one "likes" to go to a dentist. What I found at Dentist on Main was a ream dedicated to give you the best service. They are friendly, caring, and efficient. The work Dr Kalan does is of a very high quality. He has excellent bed side manners and yet gets the job done. I would highly recommend this dentist.

The dental assistant was very rough (physically) and a little rude. Did not trust the almost R4k worth of procedures recommended to me afterwards. Seeing the reviews, I am sticking with my instinct and getting a second opinion. Edit: I have been informed that it was not the dental assistant but the oral hygienist.

Staff was very friendly and helpful. The dentist we (the child I look after) saw was very kind and put the child at ease. They also gave a thorough breakdown of how to deal with the dental problems. We did have to wait a bit to be seen but we were updated with the progress of the person ahead of us at all times.

Wit bad experience I had in the past at a dentist I was recommended to go to dentist on main.. I was greeted by friendly staff.. Clean environment nd the atmosphere calms u down.. My extraction was painfree nd healed quick. I will recommend any of my friends nd fam to go thre.. Well done Dr Kalan nd his team

I would like to commend Dr Kalan and the team for the responsive and excellent service when I had to arrange an unexpected tooth filling. It's never a good feeling having to attend to a dentist visit while on holiday however despite the circumstances Kalan's team were polite and made me feel at ease .

If you are looking for a dentist in the Southern Suburbs don't bother visiting here. I have had the worst experience. They are never on time and let people who were booked an hour after you take your slot. The service was terrible and it was not friendly. I would recommend to find another dentist .

Dr Kalan absolutely went to extra mile with my teeth. From medical authorisation, to giving me the best prices, to making sure I don't leave his practice until all my teeth are in the best condition that they can be. Very impressed with the care and genuine concern offered to me by this practice.

The worst dentist ever! So expensive, and they recommend you to do things that are not necessary just to make money off of you. Comparing to other dentists, they are rubbish in technology, service and most importantly they do not care about the patients. Please anyone see this do not go there.

The service here is excellent and highly professional. I went in to fill a broken tooth and I am very happy with. Doctors and nurses are very polite and I felt comfortable as they washed and filled my teeth. The receptionists are prompt with following up on appointments. Amazing team!

I've had excellent service from the first time I stepped in there and for all my subsequent visits this year. Very kind and friendly staff. I love the wall portraits in the consultation rooms, they set an ambient tone to an otherwise historically distressing visit to the dentist.

The people there are very nice and welcoming. The treatment from staff was great, and I felt very comfortable during the checkup. The place was also very clean and sanitary, and the dentist and the staff all adhered to Covid-19 regulations and were very hygienic. I am impressed.

Dr Kalan is a humble and kind dentist - this reflects in his staff. He helped me overcome my fear of dentists. Furthermore, his prices are fair and he often gives discounts when doing a lot of work on a patient, such as a free filling. I cant recommend Dr Kalan enough.

Best Dentist in Cape Town, the practice is very professional, polite and kind. In 2018, I had a broken tooth repaired for free. In 2019, a got my teeth whitened for free as a compliment. Thanks to this practice I can always smile.

I have tremendous respect for the Doctor. However I have had a negative experience. I found that there was no respect for my time, I have waited more than half an hour to see the doctor, for a consultation, that lasted 15 minutes.

Don't care about patients at all! I'm a student but they still had the nerve to try rip me off and suggest I buy products from them and go for treatments I really don't need. Will NEVER go back. At a new dentist and very happy.
