"Horrible experience"
It was lunchtime in the Manhattan's financial district. The store was full of various suits hurriedly running errands within their alloted hour timeframe. Therefore, I did not expect the "Ace Hardware" experience where a staff person typically greets you prior to your looking for an object. I found what I was looking for and proceeded to the check-out line. The cashier rudely yelled "NEXT!!!". The person in front of me was confused. I was confused. The people behind me were confused. Why? Because 2 employees (possibly the store owners) were leaning on the cashier counter eating pork and potatoes IN FRONT of the cashier. To us waiting in line, WE thought they were waiting in line. We didn't know they worked there. If you are on lunch break, go to the back or step aside from the counter where people are trying to pay. Aren't they trying to run a business? Now for the cashier. I mean, if you looked up indifferent in the dictionary, his picture would be next to the word. He didn't say one word. I suppose he didn't need to because his face said, "I hate my life". He snatched my credit card from my hand, handed me my receipt, and motioned for me to sign. Since I was getting the silent treatment, I too silently signed, took the copy of my receipt and left. He shocked me when he mumbled thank you. I will always say this. I don't patronize businesses with rude people. Give me a reason to come in other than you have what you are looking for. Why? Because this is New York, and there are plenty of hardware stores. I don't need best friends when I go to buy something. I need to see that you at lease care that a customer bought something from you. I can't say I will be shopping here anytime soon.
I've been a FiDi resident for over 10 years and have frequented Dick's hardware for most of my time here. They are overpriced but do have most of the special bulbs I need for my apartment or to make copies of keys. There are always two people working the desk- the blonde woman who is usually pretty pleasant and the man with the dark hair and mustache who has always been miserable every time I've been a customer. I had to get keys made from the master set from an apartment building- these master sets cost $200+ if they are lost. The set had a front door key and a mailbox key. When I arrived to make copies, they told me it would be 20 minutes because they had to get the correct key type to copy and the guy was delivering them. They asked me if I wanted to leave it and come back and I said no- I wanted the master keys in my possession because they are so costly. Next thing you know, another customer needed keys made and they had her's and made her keys. She left and they gave her MY master set. They completely denied losing them or giving them to someone else. After two days of dealing w/the building management, stupidly enough, I went back there with another copy of the key thinking he would do the copies at no charge because they lost them- but NO, after he made them, he charged me!!!! I was furious. Then, I found out from the building that I needed to get a copy of the mailbox key so I called Dick's and told them they were responsible for the mailbox key charge and I was going to bring the bill. The man HUNG UP ON ME. I will NEVER go there again and I will make sure my FiDi neighbors won't either. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE.
If there was a (-) negative number in the SERVICE category, Dick's would qualify. The ONLY reason I shop here is because its close to my office. The 2 men (assuming owners) behind the counter are constantly using loud profanity toward each other & the blonde smells like a dive bar (always outside smoking). They offer a cheap hardware brand called "do it yourself" which is 3rd world grade junk. They have lots of items for the small contractor downtown in a pinch & they know it. Hence, they treat the average customer & their floor employees with what I consider the worst attitude in downtown, bordering on sleazy. Only go here is you simply must & be prepared for an 'FU' look if you actually have a question or interrupt one of them eating take-out on the cash register. Simply 3 of the unhappiest people I've ever come across who in reality have a wonderful opportunity to service the downtown area, but choose to spread a lot of bad karma. Enter At Your Own Risk.
They tell you whatever they need to say to sell an item once you pay and walk away that's when they really laugh they have no respect for customers the workers are nothing but Liars you cannot bring your girlfriend in there or even your daughter their eyes come out of their sockets... they eat food while taking care of customers on the counter disgusting!!! The girl behind the counter with the blonde hair is always on drugs!!! Falling asleep!!! Not Stephan Scholl the owner of the store his daughter refused to work there but she's on the payroll for tax reasons...
Horrible experience. Very aggressive and angry management that is not helpful at all. I bought a power tool and was promised if still unopened in box that it could be returned. When I tried to return it a few days later the manager went back on his word and insisted power tools could never be returned. Harold Wolff and Trade Center Hardware have much better prices, better service and better selection please do not give your business to Dick’s! They are trying to rip people off at all costs.
This store is a real neighborhood gem, one of the few specialty hardware stores left in Manhattan. Despite the seemingly small store front, inside one will find two floors well stocked with a surprising wide variety of tools, home improvement supplies, and specialty items. When I need something of this sort, I often go out of my way to stop here first and often have no further need to visit additional stores to satisfy my requirements. 5/5 would recommend!
I just returned from Dick’s with a quart of plain, white paint that cost me $27.00 + tax. When I questioned the price at the cash, the owner told me there was NO other option and refused me a refund. Besides the ridiculous prices, the service was appalling. Do yourself a favor a take the extra 5 minutes to Tribeca to Ace Hardware where the offer all their choices before hand, the prices are better and the service is given with a smile.
They've got just about anything you'll need for that home project. Their staff is helpful and the selection is great. I recently went in there to find wire to help hang a frame and was happy too receive help and tips along with the right wire for the job. On a previous occasion, they gave me tips on how to hang my TV. Overall great staff with great people.
Guys were as rude as possible they were talking about oral sex in front of my wife and commented "nice lips" to her. I've never been treated like this in a retail store ever chat belive they haven't been brought up on charges. As a union carpenter I know allot about tools and Thier application but was treated like a tourist ...go somewere else trust me
love the selection- love the random finds as well. usually a bit pricey comparative to bigger chains but i think it is important we make the sacrifice to keep smaller businesses alive. they are lovely about exchanges if you just speak with them prior-they are knowledgeable and have good tips and small apt hacks ;)
My favorite hardware store in the financial district. While they don't have everything under the sun, they have a LOT, and will gladly order items (bulbs, parts, etc) if you bring them the right info. They've saved me about a million headaches over the past 8 years, give or take a few.
There's only one thing I like about this place: it's close to my apartment. Other than that, the selection is quite limited and the staff is unpredictable as to how they will act, depending on the day. At times they're helpful, at times friendly, other times they seem indifferent.
This place is a hidden gem in the middle of downtown Manhattan - it's like a magic bag where you can pull out anything you want. Amazing that they have so much stuff available and have been a life saver many many times in the middle of home projects. Staff is also very helpful
We had a good experience at the store - friendly and helpful service. We needed help with purchasing light bulbs for a new lamp and got the wrong ones - went back to exchange them a couple weeks later and they were helpful in replacing and helping us select new ones.
You know this place is your regular true hardware store. I'm a carpenter by trade doing few jobs around Nassau street and this is a convenient spot to go to only when you have to it is not your local improvement store so expect to pay more than double on some items.
The name says it all. I thought this small business would be a great spot for my hardware necessities. I was unsure which power tool to buy and management was super impolite and not helpful. Next time would much rather prefer to go to Home Depot.
Horrible place. They have a lot of products but the rudeness of the staff makes it not worth it. It's one of those places where they make a face because you are paying with a credit card. Go to one of the other stores in the area or online.
They have just about every item you could imagine, and a good stock of it too. Their location is perfect since this part of Manhattan is pretty densely populated during the day, so the emergency fixes for so many of us office workers can
I recently needed a toilet fill valve on short notice. Normally, I would buy it at home depot for $7.50. However, I needed it right away so I searched google for hardware stores near my work. I tried the nearest three:
FYI, this store is way overpriced. The CO2 cylinder costs $20 here with empty bottle exchange, for which you only need to pay $10 in Target/Best Buy. The owner is also extremely rude.
Great old-fashioned hardware store with a surprisingly large selection. I found non-toxic wood glue that most stores have stopped carrying. This will be my first stop next time!
Has just about anything one could think of (got specific screws that we needed) although I'm not sure why anyone at FiDi living in an apartment building needs huge snow shovels.
They do a good quality job at key copies and at a low price ($5 on average) than all other places or machines out there, which charge at least $15 per key. Highly recommend!
They have everything and are not that overpriced. I prefer stores where the clerks leave me all one and I don't think the service is bad at all. You just have ask for help.
Legit feels like one of the last good hardware stores in nyc they have everything and are fair with prices. Feels like it’s been around forever and I hope it never closes.
Bought transparent tape there for a good price, but the staff was all "eyeballs" and quite unpleasant. Which is very uncommon in the US. They had a lot of stuff though.
They have wide range of tools and the price is good! We went there for N-3 type key copy. They charged only $9 when other places charge triple times …
Needed some paint they were able to color match with a Benjermain Moore color no problem. Jesus was very helpful and kind I was in and out in no time!
With the basement, it's way bigger than I thought. They had everything I would need and staff was very nice with helping me find things
one star for carrying the "special" light bulb that I need and minus four stars for the high price and the poor, indifferent attitude.
Woman behind the counter looked and behaved as if she were physically ill and didn't seem to want to be there. It was infectious.
I am a frequent customer always have what I need. Work in the area not as close as another one but I prefer to come to this one.
Very helpful and knowledgable people. They explain things throughly and will help to not spend money on unnecessary things.
The people here are very helpful and they have a good selection of stuff that is otherwise hard to find in the area.
They have Everything I've ever needed from a hardware store....staff Very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful!
Employees are very helpful and knowledgeable, fair prices, solid neighborhood store with hardworking people
They are so helpful and always have whatever you need and lots of things you didn't know you needed. LOL
Hands down my favorite hardware store love the staff always friendly and willing to go the extra mile
April was incredibly helpful and helped me find everything I needed and even some extra paper clips.
The entrance is very deceiving. They have just about everything you need there. I shop there often.
Horrible customer service no professionalism extremely rude totally makes me not to want to again
I was so lost coming here and the staff was amazing! They helped me find exactly what I needed.
Always has good advice and good stock, and if they don’t have it they are quick to order it.
April was extremely helpful finding the replacement parts we needed! Can't recommend enough
This is a wonderful, quirky place--they have everything and are extremely helpful.
Has plenty of supplies to do almost any home improvement and construction job.
You need stuff, they've got stuff AND experience. Great hardware store.
Locally owned and well stocked for FiDi. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Helped me find exactly the screws I needed and the price was great!
Very helpful and friendly staff. Found all my building needs.
Closed 10 minutes early in my face and were rude about it.
Reliable and well stocked neighborhood hardware store.
Great place downtown if you need something in a pinch.
