Bakery on premises, shop sells nice organic bread including sour-dough rye that is less expensive than Hobbs House. On Saturday they close at 3pm or 2pm if they sell out earlier, there's usually not much left by lunchtime but sometimes if you ask they have bread in the freezer that they sell cheaper. Their website is a bit out of date but they are helpful on the phone. Also have nice cakes etc.
How am I supposed to toast this... too many of the loaves are like this in my experience, why I try to buy bread elsewhere nowadays.... Response from owner very disappointing, how can you look at that loaf and say it is of high quality?..... as I said, too many of their loaves just aren't formed properly and just fall apart.

An unexpected find in the heart of Bristol the corned beef pasty and flapjack went down very well thankyou. There was so much to choose from I could have eaten the entire place even the hot cross buns which one reviewer didn't like ( a sad excuse not to go there again). Next time I'm in Bristol this is where I'm eating thumbs up Herbert's!!
We have a family tradition of buying Herberts's hot cross buns on Good Friday. This year the recipe has changed. They are just white currant buns with a cross on top. The mixed candied fruits have gone, and the insides are anaemic and white. I suppose the old recipe was more expensive. The end of our 30 years with Herberts. Goodbye!
I've been coming her since I was a small child! My mum always treated me walking back home from the doctor's surgery. A lovely local small business that's been selling fantastic homemade sweet treats and savory food for years. I highly recommend them, we need to support our small local businesses!
Pastries and breads in abundance. Huge selection available so tempting. One has an option for meal deals if required. The place is well run, very tidy, and staff are quick to serve. Not all items were labelled with a price. There was an issue involving getting change for a twenty.
Excellent local bakery with a wide selection of breads, pastries, cakes and much more produced onsite. Local ice-cream, hot drinks and food essentials also stocked. Friendly staff and later opening hours all add up to make this place a good option for locals and visitors alike.
Local bakery with a selection of sweet and savoury pastries. Small selection of bread with specialty and organic options available. I get the impression that some items aren't made in house, but instead are bought in frozen and baked off in store.
A local institution — started as a family bakery decades ago, since sold, but still great value bread, pastries, and cakes. Cheap hot sandwiches like bacon in a (freshly baked) roll. I love the frozen raw croissants to take home, stash in
The best bread in Bristol so far, but it would be nice if their opening hours were clearer Also it looks like on Saturdays they don't bake more bread but they just sell what they've had left from Friday which is a bit disappointing …
Amazing selection of all things bakery (including sandwiches) at very reasonable prices. A loaf here will cost fractionally more than your loaf of Hovis in a supermarket and be infinitely better in taste and quality.
My late Grandfather Stanley Joseph Clark used to work there I van remember as a kid all those lovely cakes he brought home congress tarts , bakewll tarts lovely spli tin loafs of bread
Herbert's is a popular bakery which has been there for as long as I can remember. Their speciality breads are particularly nice, especially their cheese and onion
My mother used to bring me here when I was a young boy, in the 80's. I will never forget the warm croissants with cream and chocolate. Thanks for the memories.
Got a pasty from here only to realise after the first bite that the whole inside was covered in furry green mould. Never coming here again. I could've died
Not really had any good bread or croissants from here. Better to try the Bread Store or the pop up bakery at the end of Stokes Croft.
Great selection of pastries and pasties and lunch offerings! Also the rhubarb and strawberry cake is a must try!
Best Cheese and onion pasties in the game. Update: I've just ate another pasty. Still the best in the game.
They need to update their opening times on Google...says they are open right now and it's closed... again
lovely bread. Good range of breads, pastries and cakes. lucky to have this bakery in the local community
Best place in bristol for fresh bread n cakes n that thanks Herberts for being there for us community
First time at Herbert's definitely won't be the last amazing pasties/paties highly recommended
A little disappointed with the sandwiches they had to offer. Selection was very very limited
Really independent bakery. Get there before 14.00. Hidden at bottom of Picton st. Worth it.
Used to come here as a Fairfield student a decade ago, can't believe I stopped popping by
Don't be put off by the drab exterior - Place is clean, professional and food is excelent
Fantastic staff, great treats Normally take the kids after school, it's never toooo busy
There is a great selection of pasties on sale both ordinary or vegetarian and vegan
Food was really good, only criticism is that it was 'heated up' to a low lukewarm.
Van driver behaves like a nutter speeding up narrow roads and buzzing pedestrians
Good local bakery. Tucked away. Has been here for ever. A Bristol institution.
The overnight white is good, and they have some good fresh yeast you can buy
fantastic still as good as it was back on the day when it opened at 4am
Love love everything from here including veggie sausage roll …
